Computer Assisted Quality of Life and Symptom Assessment of Complex Patients from April 2011-August 2012: Chicago, Illinois (ICPSR 34543)
The purpose of this study was to expand the research capacity for comparative effectiveness evaluations of patients with multiple chronic conditions. Researchers administered a generic Quality of Life (QOL) instrument, physical symptom assessment, patient health questionnaire, and a tobacco screen through audio computer-assisted self-interviews (ACASI) and linked the responses to their electronic medical records (EMR) data. Researchers also calculated two co-morbidity indices (Chronic Disease Score and Charlson Co-morbidity Index).
Planning for SUCCESS (Sustained, Unbroken Connections to Care, Entry Services, and Suppression): Phase II of a Project to Improve the Connection to Community Care for HIV-Infected Persons Leaving Jail in Atlanta, 2014-2015 (ICPSR 39799)
This feasibility study tested the logistics and acceptance of the intervention and its evaluation tools against "usual care" conditions in preparation for a future randomized controlled trial. Specific aims included:
- Demonstrating that recruitment and delivery of the intervention are feasible.
- Demonstrating that enrolled releasees will link to HIV care by 3 months post release. A successful linkage to HIV medical care was defined as a confirmed visit to a clinic post release, validated by a recorded HIV viral load and CD4 count in the clinic's medical records.
- Documenting retention in care, defined as a minimum of 2 HIV clinical visits occurring within 12 months post release, with at least 2 clinical visits spaced a minimum of 3 months apart. Related retention outcome measures included proportion with viral load suppression and, as needed, attendance at substance abuse rehabilitation, and mental health treatment.
Data was collected at baseline, and at 3 and 12 months post-release. The 1st and 2nd sessions occurred in jail and 4 post-release sessions in the community.

Finding, Testing and Treating High-Risk Probationers and Parolees with HIV (Urban Health Studies: UHS II), California, 2012-2013 (ICPSR 39801)
The Seek, Test, Treat and Retain (STTR) Collaboration Project involved over twenty studies in the fields of HIV and drug abuse. These studies were independently developed, but were chosen for the collaboration because they focused on one or more steps of the HIV treatment cascade: Seek, Test, Treat and Retain. These studies were grouped into Criminal Justice-related studies and Vulnerable Population-related studies. The data collected by these studies included twelve common domains (e.g. demographic characteristics, mental health) in each of which a shared questionnaire or instrument was taken up by the studies and adapted to fit the study. This repository contains the collected data and documentation from the STTR collaboration.
This study in particular is part of the Urban Health Studies project, specifically assessing treatment outcomes of high-risk probationers and parolees with HIV in California from 2012 to 2013.

The Iowa Adoption Studies, 1975-2008 (ICPSR 34369)
The Iowa Adoption Studies were conducted between 1975 and 2008. The group of studies consist of 5 independent waves of data collection each of which examined genetic (biological) and environmental influences on psychopathology. The adoption paradigm allowed separation of genetic and environmental influences on behavior, as well as joint influences due to gene x environment interaction. Adoptees were interviewed about lifetime psychopathology including substance abuse and dependence, antisocial personality, and mood disorders. A follow-up study was conducted from 2000-2004 that recruited all previous participants and natural offspring of the adoptive parents when available. Standardized psychiatric assessments were administered along with measures of personality disorders and traits, retrospective reports on childhood experiences with adoptive parents, and current symptomatology. An extensive neurocognitive assessment was conducted on a subset of participants who had standardized school achievement scores. The goal of this last wave of assessment was to evaluate the influence of substance use on mid-life cognition and health.
The respondents were assessed using a number of different surveys over the study period. The following describes the notable variables as well as descriptions of the surveys included in the dataset.
The first variables in the dataset identify sibling pairs and provides data on whether the respondents' biological parents suffered from mental health or substance abuse issues. Next birth records are provided that give basic information about the health of the person when he or she was born. This information is followed by the survey results of "The Schedule for Nonadaptive and Adaptive Personality" (SNAP) as well as variables that reflect the diagnosis of personality disorders and nonadaptive personality traits based on the SNAP survey responses.
The next section includes responses from "The Iowa Personality Disorder Screen," a quick personality disorder screen developed in 1999 intended for use in clinical and research settings.
Next, responses to Pearson Assessments "Brief symptoms inventory" are included as well as the scores calculated based on these survey responses. The results of this survey assess the mental state of the patient including scales on Somatization, Obsessive-Compulsive, Interpersonal Sensitivity, Depression, Anxiety, Hostility, Phobic Anxiety, Paranoid Ideation and Psychoticism.
The respondents also completed the "Buss-Durkee Hostility Questionnaire" and were assessed on measure regarding the following hostility traits: negativism, resentment, indirect hostility, assault, suspicion, irritability and verbal hostility.
Reponses to the "The Social Provisions Scale" survey are also included. The purpose of this survey is to assess the relationship the respondents have to other people. The 6 social provisions assessed include: guidance, reliable alliance, reassurance of worth, attachment, social integration, and opportunity for nurturance.
"The Parental Bonding Instrument" instrument was utilized to assess the respondents' relationships to their mothers and fathers.

Scores from the "Iowa Test of Basic Skills," a test of academic achievement that evaluates students knowledge in subjects including, mathematics, reading comprehension, and science, are included in the dataset. Respondents are evaluated in grades 4, 8 and 11.
The final section of the dataset includes two waves of the "Semi Structured Assessment for the Genetics of Alcoholism," a survey intended to assess the physical, psychological, and social manifestations of alcohol abuse. These survey responses make up the bulk of the dataset and include variables on a variety of topics including: demographics, medical history, substance use, eating disorders, depression, dysthymia, mania, ASP, suicide, PTSD, generalized anxiety disorder, OCD, social phobia, agoraphobia, panic disorder, home environment, gambling, and ADHD. Substances use investigated includes alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, sedatives, stimulants, cocaine, opiates, solvents, hallucinogens, and other drugs.
This dataset includes 934 cases and 9,370 variables.
Seek, Test, and Treat Strategies, Wisconsin, 2013-2015 (ICPSR 39797)
This study is part of the Seek, Test, Treat and Retain (STTR) Collaboration Project that involved over twenty studies in the fields of HIV and drug abuse. All studies were independently developed, but were chosen for the collaboration because they focused on one or more steps of the HIV treatment cascade: Seek, Test, Treat and Retain. As part of STTR Collaboration Project, the studies were grouped into Criminal Justice-related studies and Vulnerable Population-related studies. The Seek, Test, and Treat (STT) strategies included the following parts:
Part 1
- Tested all detainees at the Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility (MSDF). MSDF is the state-operated detention facility for probation and parole revokees in Milwaukee County.
Part 2
- Linked (or re-linked) all HIV-positive persons and released to Milwaukee County from the WI prison system (including MSDF) to the state's largest HIV treatment and prevention service provider, the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin (ARCW).
Part 3
- Sought undiagnosed HIV infection within MSDF releasees' social/sexual risk networks through an innovative releasee-based referral testing strategy.
START Together: HIV Testing and Treatment In and After Jail, New York, 2011-2014 (ICPSR 39795)

The overall aim of the START study is to increase the rate of HIV testing among recently released offender populations.
CARE-RAPID (RCT)
- This is a pilot randomized study of a computer-assisted program, the Computer Assessment and Risk-Reduction Education--Rapid (CARE-Rapid). CARE-Rapid was used as means of educating offenders leaving jails about the risk of HIV and gaining their consent for an HIV test. The sample consisted of offenders discharged from jails within the past 90 days and entering a residential substance abuse treatment program. The study used an intent-to-treatment design with random assignment to a CARE-Rapid and a treatment-as-usual (TAU) condition. The outcome of interest was whether participants got an HIV test at admission to the treatment program. Participants were followed-up with at 3 months after baseline. CARE-RAPID was conducted at Samaritan Village Inc, a residential substance abuse treatment center, and includes individuals discharged from Riker's Island or Nassau County Jail.
Project START (Quasi-experimental study)
- Project START is a quasi-experimental pilot study to evaluate the efficacy of Project START, a manualized intervention focusing on reducing risk for HIV. Project START consisted of two sessions in jail and four sessions during the first three months after discharge from a facility for offenders serving one year or less. The intervention was administered by Exponents, not-for-profit organization that offers a number of services, including outpatient substance abuse treatment. All Project START subjects were offered an HIV test and pre- and post-test counseling on their arrival at Exponents post-discharge from Rikers Island. Participants in Project Start were compared to the experimental arm from CARE-RAPID.
Qualitative Interviews
- Qualitative interviews were conducted to gain a better understanding of those aspects of the offender's perceptions and circumstances that facilitate or hinder taking an HIV test. Interviews were with offenders who have been released from New York City and Nassau County Jails in the 90-days prior to entering Exponents for treatment.
Seek, Test, Treat Strategies for Vietnamese Drug Users: A Random Controlled Trial (Project VISTA), Vietnam, 2013 (ICPSR 39802)

Project VISTA offers drug users in Vietnam HIV testing and counseling (HTC). The primary outcome measure for this study was suppression of HIV-1 viral load below 400 copies/mL (measured at the 6 and 12 month visits). Secondary outcome measures included self-reported antiretroviral adherence, changes in CD4 cell counts, and quality of life.
A secondary seek/test study will be done to evaluate uptake of HIV testing and counseling by network referrals from the RCT participants (the data files will not be part of the STTR integrated data).
Washington, DC, Metropolitan Area Drug Study (DC*MADS), 1992: Drug Use Among DC Women Delivering Live Births in DC Hospitals (ICPSR 2347)
The Washington, DC, Metropolitan Area Drug Study (DC*MADS) was conducted in 1991, and included special analyses of homeless and transient delivering live births in the DC hospitals. DC*MADS was undertaken to assess the full extent of the drug problem in one metropolitan area. The study was comprised of 16 separate studies that focused on different sub-groups, many of which are typically not included or are underrepresented in household surveys.
The DC*MADS: Drug Use Among Women Delivering Livebirths in DC Hospitals was designed to examine the nature and extent of drug use among women delivering live births in eight Washington, DC, hospitals participating in the study. Data from the questionnaires include prenatal care, health problems during pregnancy, pregnancy drug use history, needle use, polysubstance use, patterns of use, respondent's general experiences with drug use, including perceptions of the risks and consequences of use, occurrence of psychological and emotional problems, income and insurance coverage, treatment experiences, and maternal and infant outcomes. Medical records were abstracted from the women and their infants to document medical problems. Abstracted data on the mothers included demographics, discharge diagnoses, disposition at discharge, and results of urine screens. Abstracted data on infants included delivery information, status at discharge, discharge diagnoses/procedures, and first urine toxicology screen results.

This study has two components.
Study #1: The main objectives of Study 1 were to determine the willingness to the community corrections community to undergo testing, and to test rapid HIV testing on-site in community corrections to referral to an off-site HIV testing location. Participants were probationers or parolees in both Providence, Rhode Island and Baltimore City, Maryland (participants split 50/50 between sites). The outcomes were undergoing HIV testing and receiving the test results.
Study #2: Randomized controlled trial of linkage to HIV care among probationers or parolees known to have HIV who were randomized to referral to treatment as usual (TAU) or Project Bridge which provided intensive case management, medical and social support. (Note: participants could "cross over" into Project Bridge at 6 months if they failed to engage with care in the TAU group.) The outcomes included retention in care, use of ART, and viral load. Assessments were done at baseline for both studies, and every 3 months thereafter until 18 months for study 2. If incarcerated, assessments were done in prison/jail.

Peer-Delivered Behavioral Activation Intervention to Improve Adherence to MAT Among Low-Income, Minority Individuals with OUD, Maryland, 2020-2022 (ICPSR 39305)
This study expands on the Behavioral Intervention to improve adherence to Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) among low-income, marginalized individuals in Baltimore, Maryland. Based on Behavioral Activation principles, the "Peer Activate" intervention is specifically designed for implementation by trained peer recovery specialists.
Implementation outcomes included feasibility, acceptability, and fidelity. Feasibility, defined as the suitability and practicality of the approach, was quantitatively measured by the percentage of participants agreeing to participate in the intervention. Acceptability, defined as satisfaction with or tolerability of the approach, was measured quantitatively by session attendance. Fidelity was evaluated through independent ratings of a randomly selected 20% of sessions. The primary effectiveness measure was methadone retention at three months post-intervention, with secondary outcomes including methadone adherence, substance use frequency, and related problems.

This study in particular, assesses outcomes of Oral Naltrexone on HIV Treatment among HIV-1 infected men in Lima, Peru. A randomized blinded placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted to determine if oral naltrexone (NTX) would improve the likelihood that HIV-infected participants with alcohol use disorders (AUDs) remain engaged in care and become highly adherent to antiretroviral therapy (ART), with acceptable safety.

Connect4Care (C4C) was a single site, randomized year-long study of Short Message Service (SMS) primary care appointment reminders vs. SMS primary care appointment reminders plus thrice-weekly supportive, informational, and motivational SMS messages. Eligible consenting patients were allocated 1:1 to the two arms within strata defined by HIV diagnosis within the past 12 months (i.e. "newly diagnosed") vs. earlier.

The main project of the CARE+ Corrections study is in Washington DC and is a RCT evaluating the "CARE+ Corrections intervention (a computerized tool integrating HIV treatment counseling, secondary transmission risk reduction counseling, and facilitated linkage to care through text message reminders)" versus standard of care among returning citizens in Washington, DC. The study is recruiting 100 participants who are incarcerated or were released from a correctional facility less than 6 months ago.
Abstinence Reinforcing Contingency Management to Suppress HIV Viral Load (Project First), New York City, 2012 (ICPSR 39785)

Using a randomized controlled study design, this study tested the efficacy of an abstinence-reinforcing CM intervention compared with a control condition (performance feedback) on HIV viral load (VL) suppression. The intervention CM group could receive up to $1320 in vouchers over the 16-week intervention based on drug-free urine. Participants were followed for 28 weeks (44 visits), with research visits occurring twice weekly during the Baseline Period (weeks 1-4, visits 1-8) and Intervention Period (weeks 5-20, visits 9-40), then every two weeks during the Post-Intervention Period (weeks 21-28, visits 41-44).

Linking Infectious and Narcology Care (LINC) involved coordination between the narcology and HIV systems of care utilizing HIV strengths-based case management delivered via five one-on-one sessions by a peer case manager (i.e., HIV-infected men and women in recovery from addiction) to help motivate and reduce barriers to HIV care. The initial session was designed to be delivered in the narcology hospital and included provision of CD4 test results by the case manager (CM) in a timely fashion, to increase engagement in HIV medical care. Subsequent sessions were conducted upon discharge from the narcology hospital over a 6-month period in community (e.g., parks, coffee shops) or clinic locations, agreed upon by the case manager and participant.
The LINC intervention was developed via adaptation of the Antiretroviral Treatment Access Study (ARTAS) intervention for use in the Russian setting and specifically with people who inject drugs (PWID).

This study was a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) of a peer-based health system navigation intervention among individuals assigned to the intervention group compared with those assigned to the control group (usual care transitional management services). Baseline interviews were conducted during incarceration while the follow-up interviews were conducted at months 2, 6 and 12 following release from jail to the community. For participants who were re-incarcerated during, interviews were conducted in the jail setting to ensure high study retention. The goal was to improve engagement and retention in HIV care.
Naltrexone for Extended-Release Injectable Suspension (XR-NTX) for Opioid Dependent Released HIV-Positive Criminal Justice Populations (Project NEW HOPE), Connecticut and Massachusetts, 2011-2015 (ICPSR 39790)

The specific aim for this study was to conduct a placebo-controlled, RCT of VIVITROL or (extended-release naltrexone) (XR-NTX 380mg) among HIV+ persons in jails and prisons meeting DSM-IV criteria for opioid dependence who are transitioning to the community. HIV treatment outcomes (HIV-1 RNA levels, CD4 count, HAART adherence, retention in care), substance abuse (time to relapse to opioid use, % opioid negative urines, opioid craving), adverse side effects and HIV risk behavior (sexual and drug-related risks) outcomes were compared in 150 recruited prisoners and jail detainees in CT and MA who were randomized 2:1 to either XR-NTX 380mg or XR-NTX-placebo. The primary outcome of interest was the proportion with a HIV-RNA less than 400 copies/mL at 6 months. Secondary outcomes included mean CD4 count, antiretroviral adherence, retention on HAART and in HIV care, HIV risk behaviors, time-to-relapse to opioid use, percent opioid negative urines, retention on XR-NTX 380mg and HIV quality of life. Primary and secondary outcomes were assessed for an additional 6 months after completion of the intervention.

National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP): Round 1, [United States], 2005-2006 (ICPSR 20541)
The National Social Life, Health and Aging Project (NSHAP) is the first population-based study of health and social factors on a national scale, aiming to understand the well-being of older, community-dwelling Americans by examining the interactions among physical health, illness, medication use, cognitive function, emotional health, sensory function, health behaviors, and social connectedness. It is designed to provide health providers, policy makers, and individuals with useful information and insights into these factors, particularly on social and intimate relationships. The National Opinion Research Center (NORC), along with Principal Investigators at the University of Chicago, conducted more than 3,000 interviews during 2005 and 2006 with a nationally representative sample of adults aged 57 to 85. Face-to-face interviews and biomeasure collection took place in respondents' homes. The following files constitute Round 1: Core Data, Marital/Cohabiting History Data, Social Networks Data, Medications Data, and Sexual Partners Data.
Included in the Core file (Datasets 1 and 2) are demographic characteristics, such as gender, age, education, race, and ethnicity. Other topics covered respondents' social networks, social and cultural activity, physical and mental health including cognition, well-being, illness, medications and alternative therapies, history of sexual and intimate partnerships and patient-physician communication, in addition to bereavement items. In addition data was collected from respondents on the following items and modules: social activity items, physical contact module, sexual interest module, get up and go assessment of physical function and a panel of biomeasures including, weight, waist circumference, height, blood pressure, smell, saliva collection, taste, and a self-administered vaginal swab for female respondents. The Core file also contains a count of the total number of drugs taken, and a variable for each observed therapeutic category, indicating whether the respondent reported taking one or more medications in that category. These variables are derived from the information in the medications file, and thus are guaranteed to be consistent with it. The Marital/Cohabiting History file (Dataset 3) contains one record for each marriage or cohabitation identified in Section 3A of the questionnaire. The Social Networks file (Datasets 4 and 5) contains one record for each person identified on the network roster. Respondents who refused to participate in the roster or who did not identify anyone are not represented in this file. The Medications file (Dataset 6) contains one record for each item listed in the medications log (including alternative medicines and nutritional products). Respondents who did not report taking any medications or who refused to participate in this module are not represented in this file. Lastly, the Sexual Partners file (Dataset 7) contains one record for each sexual partner identified in Section 3A of the questionnaire.
NACDA also maintains a Colectica portal with the NSHAP Core data across rounds 1-3, which allows users to interact with variables across rounds and create customized subsets. Registration is required.

The AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) Data Report (ADR) includes two components: the Grantee Report and the Client Report. All ADAPs are required to submit both reports.
The Grantee Report is a collection of basic information about the grantee characteristics and policies. It includes a Programmatic Summary section and an Annual Submission section.
The Client Report (or client-level data) is a collection of one record for each client enrolled in the ADAP. Each record includes the client's encrypted unique identifier, basic demographic data, and enrollment and certification information. A client's record may also include data about the ADAP-funded insurance and medication received, including the costs of these services, as well as HIV clinical information.

The National Opinion Research Center (NORC), along with Principal Investigators at the University of Chicago, conducted more than 3,000 interviews during 2005 and 2006 with a nationally representative sample of adults aged 57 to 85. Face-to-face interviews and biomeasure collection took place in respondents' homes. Round 2 interviews were conducted from August 2010 through May 2011, during which Round 1 Respondents were re-interviewed. An attempt was also made to interview individuals who were sampled in Round 1 but declined to participate. In addition, spouses or co-resident partners were also interviewed using the same instruments as the main respondents. This process resulted in 3,377 total respondents. The following files constitute Round 2: Core Data, Disposition of Round 1 Partner Data, Social Networks Data, Social Networks Update Data, Partner History Data, Partner History Update Data, Medications Data, Proxy Data, and Sleep Statistics Data.
Included in the Core files (Datasets 1 and 2) are demographic characteristics, such as gender, age, education, race, and ethnicity. Other topics covered respondents' social networks, social and cultural activity, physical and mental health including cognition, well-being, illness, history of sexual and intimate partnerships, and patient-physician communication, in addition to bereavement items. Data were also collected from respondents on the following items and modules: social activity items, physical contact module, sexual interest module, get up and go assessment of physical function, and a panel of biomeasures, including weight, waist circumference, height, blood pressure, smell, saliva collection, and taste.
The Disposition of Round 1 Partner files (Datasets 3 and 4) detail information derived from Section 6A items regarding the partner from Round 1 within the questionnaire. This provides a complete history for respondent partners across both rounds.
The Social Networks files (Datasets 5 and 6) contain one record for each person identified on the network roster. Respondents who refused to participate in the roster or who did not identify anyone are not represented in this file.
The Social Networks Update files (Datasets 7 and 8) detail respondents' current relationship status with each person identified on the network roster.
The Partner History file (Dataset 9) contains one record for each marriage, cohabitation, or romantic relationship identified in Section 6A of the questionnaire, including a current partner in Round 2 but excluding the partner from Round 1.
The Partner History Update file (Dataset 10) details respondents' current sexual partner information, as well as marital and cohabiting status.
The Medications Data file (Dataset 11) contains records for items listed in the medications log.
The Proxy Data files (Datasets 12 and 13) contain information from proxy interviews administered for Round 1 Respondents who were either deceased or whose health was too poor to participate in Round 2.
The Sleep Statistics Data files (Dataset 14 and 15) provide information on actigraphy sleep variables.
NACDA also maintains a Colectica portal with the NSHAP Core data across rounds 1-3, which allows users to interact with variables across rounds and create customized subsets. Registration is required.

The Services Research Outcomes Study (SROS) sought to answer questions about drug treatment efficacy and to describe client characteristics. The study was designed to provide (1) a 1990 cohort of clients to use as baseline for possible changes in treatment outcomes following increased funding to the national treatment system in the 1990s, (2) a before-to-after comparison to measure outcomes of treatment provided in 1990, (3) a follow-up of drug treatment clients five years after treatment to assess the level of sustained improvements in abstinence, and (4) a first look at multiple treatment episodes before and after treatment in a 1990 population.
Part 1 is the Facility Director Interviews and covered topics such as facility staff and organization, revenue and charges, staff hours and compensation, costs, and program characteristics.
Part 2 is the Client Records Abstractions Data, which examined the client records of 2,222 individuals discharged during 1989-1990. Information was abstracted on demographic characteristics of clients, criminal justice involvement, medical conditions, drug history including intravenous drug use, urine test results, drug treatment history, treatment services, and discharge and billing information.
Part 3 consists of the Client Follow-Up Interviews, and was conducted during 1995 and 1996. This part covered the clients' entire life span, with special attention to their behavior and circumstances during the five years before entry to the index (SROS) treatment in 1989-1990 and after leaving that treatment until the time of the interview. Additional questions were asked on patterns of alcohol and drug consumption, criminal activity, employment, health, social support, and other behavior relevant to treatment goals. Drugs included cocaine, crack, heroin, nontreatment methadone, other opiates/synthetics, barbiturates, benzodiazapine, other sedatives/hypnotics, methamphetamines, other amphetamines, marijuana/hash/THC, PCP/LSD, other hallucinogens, inhalants, over-the-counter medications, and alcohol.

Monitoring the Future: A Continuing Study of American Youth (12th-Grade Survey), 2020 (ICPSR 38156)
This survey of 12th-grade students is part of a series that explores changes in important values, behaviors, and lifestyle orientations of contemporary American youth. Students are randomly assigned to complete one of six questionnaires, each with a different subset of topical questions, but all containing a set of "core" questions on demographics and drug use. There are about 1,400 variables across the questionnaires. Drugs covered by this survey include tobacco, smokeless tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, hashish, prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, LSD, hallucinogens, amphetamines (stimulants), Ritalin (methylphenidate), barbiturates (tranquilizers), cocaine, crack cocaine, GHB (gamma hydroxybutyrate), ecstasy, methamphetamine, and heroin. Other topics include attitudes toward religion, changing roles for women, educational aspirations, self-esteem, exposure to drug education, and violence and crime (both in and out of school).
Highlights for 2020:
- All students recorded their survey answers on tablets that the project brought to the schools, preloaded with the MTF surveys.
- Data collection was halted prematurely on March 15, 2020 when the University of Michigan stopped all projects that involved face-to-face data collection because of COVID-19 concerns. This resulted in a 2020 sample size about 25% the size of a regular data collection.

Monitoring the Future: A Continuing Study of American Youth (8th- and 10th-Grade Surveys), 2020 (ICPSR 38189)
These surveys of 8th- and 10th-grade students are part of a series that explores changes in important values, behaviors, and lifestyle orientations of contemporary American youth. Students in each grade are randomly assigned to complete one of four questionnaires, each with a different subset of topical questions but containing a set of "core" questions on demographics and drug use. There are more than 500 variables across the questionnaires. Drugs covered by this survey include amphetamines (stimulants), barbiturates (tranquilizers), other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, tobacco, smokeless tobacco, vaping, alcohol, inhalants, steroids, marijuana, hashish, LSD, hallucinogens, cocaine, crack, ecstasy, methamphetamine, and injectable drugs such as heroin.
Highlights for 2020:
