This collection contains individual-level and 1-percent national sample data from the 1960 Census of Population and Housing conducted by the Census Bureau. It consists of a representative sample of the records from the 1960 sample questionnaires. The data are stored in 30 separate files, containing in total over two million records, organized by state. Some files contain the sampled records of several states while other files contain all or part of the sample for a single state. There are two types of records stored in the data files: one for households and one for persons. Each household record is followed by a variable number of person records, one for each of the household members. Data items in this collection include the individual responses to the basic social, demographic, and economic questions asked of the population in the 1960 Census of Population and Housing. Data are provided on household characteristics and features such as the number of persons in household, number of rooms and bedrooms, and the availability of hot and cold piped water, flush toilet, bathtub or shower, sewage disposal, and plumbing facilities. Additional information is provided on tenure, gross rent, year the housing structure was built, and value and location of the structure, as well as the presence of air conditioners, radio, telephone, and television in the house, and ownership of an automobile. Other demographic variables provide information on age, sex, marital status, race, place of birth, nationality, education, occupation, employment status, income, and veteran status. The data files were obtained by ICPSR from the Center for Social Analysis, Columbia University.

This summary statistics data file contains a complete or 100-percent count of all persons in group quarters by sex and age, including ages under 1 to 74 with a category for ages 75 and over, as well as the total. The distribution is repeated for 18 race/Hispanic groups. Population in group quarters includes persons in institutional group quarters such as homes, schools, hospitals, or wards for the physically and mentally handicapped, hospitals or wards for mental, tubercular, or chronically ill patients, homes for unwed mothers, nursing, convalescent, and rest homes for the aged and dependent, orphanages, and correctional institutions. Noninstitutional group quarters include rooming and boarding houses, general hospitals, including nurses' and interns' dormitories, college students' dormitories, religious group quarters, and similar housing. Demographic items specify age, sex, state of birth, race, ethnicity, marital status, education, income, and type of group quarters lived in. Data are available for all counties and independent cities in the United States.

These groups are total population, Hispanic (plus subgroups of white, Black, American Indian, Asian Indian, other specified, and other nonspecified Hispanic), non-Hispanic (including subgroups of white, Black, American Indian, Asian Indian, other specified, and other nonspecified non-Hispanic), white, Black, American Indian, Asian Indian, other specified, and other nonspecified. Cleveland Study of the Elderly: a Follow-Up, 1984-1988 (ICPSR 6985)

This follow-up survey, funded under two separate grants from the National Institute on Aging (NIA), reinterviewed survivors of STUDY OF THE WELL-BEING OF OLDER PEOPLE IN CLEVELAND, OHIO, 1975-1976 (ICPSR 7773). The first part of the project, "Cleveland GAO Study of the Elderly: A Follow-Up", was conducted from 1983 to 1986, and reinterviewed survivors (n = 647) of the original 1975 sample (n = 1,834) to determine the impact of gender on the quality of life for elders, along with stability and change in measures of mental health. During 1984, a subset of the interview subjects were visited at their homes to validate self-reported impairment and disability. These data are presented in Part 1, Cleveland GAO Study of the Elderly: A Follow-Up, 1984 Data for Survivors of 1975 Sample. The second phase of the project, "Cleveland Elderly 12 Years Later," describes changes in disease, disability, and mortality since 1975 and attempted to determine if differences were related to changes in social support, use of health services, or economic status. The study also sought to assess levels of social, economic, mental, and physical well-being reported by respondents, and examined daily activities, the use and quality of services, and the characteristics of service providers. The "Cleveland Elderly 12 Years Later" data were collected in 1987 and again in 1988. Data collected in 1987 consist of interviews with survivors of the original 1975 sample (Part 2) along with interviews from an additional sample drawn from the 1977 Medicare rolls (Part 3). During 1988, interviews were again conducted with survivors of the original 1975 sample (Part 4) and survivors of the Medicare sample (Part 5). Data collected in 1984, 1987, and 1988 for survivors of the 1975 sample may be merged with the original data collected in 1975-1976 using the ID number.

Preparation of this data collection was funded by grant #90-A-1279 from the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Administration on Aging. Estimates of the population of persons 60 years old and older were received from the Census Bureau in printed form and were made machine-readable by staff at ICPSR. Other variables contained in this dataset were merged from existing machine-readable census files. The data concerning racial composition of counties were taken from the CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING, 1980 [UNITED STATES]: P.L. 94-171 POPULATION COUNTS (ICPSR 7854). The figures concerning per capita income were taken from the Bureau of the Census, GENERAL REVENUE SHARING, 1978 POPULATION ESTIMATES (ICPSR 7840). Variables include Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) state and county codes, 1978 per capita income of county, and total population of county broken down by sex, race, and age (in four-year increments with a category for persons 75 years old and older).

The Human Mortality Database (HMD) was created to provide detailed mortality and population data to researchers, students, journalists, policy analysts, and others interested in the history of human longevity. The project began as an outgrowth of earlier projects in the Department of Demography at the University of California, Berkeley, USA, and at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany. It is the work of two teams of researchers in the USA and Germany. The main goal of the database is to document the longevity revolution of the modern era and to facilitate research into its causes and consequences. At present, the database contains detailed data for a collection of 26 countries. The countries involved are Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, the total and civilian populations of England and Wales, Finland, France, Germany, West Germany, East Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithunia, Netherlands, the Maori and Non-Maori populations of New Zealand, Norway, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States.

The Mortality Detail File: External Cause Extract is a special subset of data prepared from the MORTALITY DETAIL FILES, 1968-1991 (ICPSR 7632). Due to changes in Cause of Death definitions incorporated in the INTERNATIONAL CLASSIFICATION OF DISEASES, NINTH REVISION (ICD-9), the 1968-1978 data files differ slightly from the 1979-1980 data files. The 1968-1978 data reflect cause of death codes of the INTERNATIONAL CLASSIFICATION OF DISEASES ADAPTED FOR USE IN THE UNITED STATES, EIGHTH REVISION (ICDA-8). The period immediately following (1979-80) utilizes ICD-9 cause of death codes. In addition to the differences in the Cause of Death codes and recodes, the 1979-1980 data include three variables not available in the 1968-1978 datasets. These are: mortality by marital status, state or country of birth, and place of death and status of decedent when death occurred in a hospital or medical center. With these exceptions, the data are similar in structure and content to the 1968-1978 data and provide detailed personal and geographic information such as month and day of death, decedent's race and gender, age of deceased at time of death, place of decedent's residence (specific to the city level), place of death (specific to the county level), and whether an autopsy was performed. The 1979-1980 files also contain new variables pertinent to criminal justice research: handgun versus other gun accidents, handgun versus other firearm suicides, handgun versus other firearm homicides, and drug poison versus other poison homicides.

The National Longitudinal Mortality Study (NLMS) consists of a database developed for the purpose of studying the effects of demographic and socio-economic characteristics on differentials in United States mortality rates. The NLMS database is based on a random sample of the non-institutionalized population of the United States. It consists of United States Census Bureau data from Current Population Surveys, annual Social and Economic Supplements and the 1980 Census combined with death certificate information to identify mortality status and cause of death.

This data collection includes estimates of net migration by age, race, and sex for United States counties for the periods 1950-1960 and 1960-1970. These estimates were developed primarily by the census-survival ratios forward method, and adjusted to be consistent with vital statistics by county. The files contain geographical identifiers such as state, division, region, county name and GEO code. Data on births according to sex and race are presented as well as total population by age groups, sex and race (white vs. nonwhite). Net migration estimates and net migration rates for each category are also included.

This collection contains time series data, spanning 35 years, on general social indicators. The file includes data on vital statistics, population, the labor force, health, education, and leisure activities. Variables on vital statistics cover birth and death rates and life expectancy. Variables on population cover marriage, divorce, and age by sex. Labor force data contain information on employment and unemployment, percentages of the population employed in certain occupations, labor turnover, and family income. Health-related data include hospital and doctor visits, prescription costs, and nursing home expenses. Education data cover degrees conferred, educational attainment rates, and number of children enrolled in kindergarten and primary and secondary schools. Data on leisure activities cover sporting event attendance, automobile ownership, and utility consumption. Most of the data are reported on an annual basis extending from 1946 through 1980. Some data, such as the education data, are based on a less frequent observation cycle, and other data, such as health data, do not extend back to 1946. The study consists of a documentation file and a data file. The documentation contains a list of the variables, an alphabetized listing of the variables, and SPSS descriptives. The data file contains both the SPSS control cards and the data.

Since 2007, the American Psychological Association (APA) has commissioned an annual nationwide survey as part of its Mind/Body Health campaign to examine the state of stress across the country and understand its impact. The Stress in America survey measures attitudes and perceptions of stress among the general public and identifies leading sources of stress, common behaviors used to manage stress and the impact of stress on our lives. The results of the survey draw attention to the serious physical and emotional implications of stress and the inextricable link between the mind and body.

From 2007 to 2024, the research has documented this connection among the general public as well as various sub-segments of the public. Each year, the Stress in America surveys aims to uncover different aspects of the stress/health connection via focusing on a particular topic and/or subgroup of the population.
