The purpose of this data collection was to identify the patterns by which teachers become certified, enter teaching, leave teaching, and return to teaching and to identify the extent to which these patterns are related to race, sex, age, subject specialty, test scores, salary, and district characteristics. Variables include information on career histories, NTE scores, subject area training and specialization, individual salary data, school district demographics, teacher certification and entry into the system, attrition, career interruption, and interdistrict mobility.

National Longitudinal Survey (NLS) of College Graduates, 1967-1985 (ICPSR 9390)

This collection is based upon data from three national longitudinal surveys administered by the United States Census Bureau and is intended for research into career histories and decisions of young men and women who graduated from college between 1967 and 1985. Several research questions are explored including the following: (1) Who, among college graduates, entered teaching? (2) Of those who entered teaching, who stayed, and for how long? (3) What do teachers do when they leave teaching and from which occupations are they most likely to return to teaching? (4) Do the career patterns of teachers and potential teachers differ by race, gender, age, college major, or IQ score? (5) Have there been changes in teacher career patterns over time? This data file contains 154 variables in four categories: individual characteristics (birth year, race, IQ score, Armed Forces Qualifications Test, gender, and dependents), educational characteristics (year of graduation, major field of study), employment characteristics (employment status, job, job status, salary), and teaching status (whether the graduate taught within five years of graduation, year began teaching, career status, length of first teaching job, year left teaching, reason for leaving teaching, second teaching job length, year returned to teaching).

Occupational Changes in a Generation, 1962 and 1973 (ICPSR 6162)

These data were collected to study the effect of men's backgrounds on their careers. The 1962 and 1973 surveys (Parts 1 and 2) were intended to supplement the March Current Population Surveys conducted by the Census Bureau. The Replicate Data file (Part 3) is a recoded subset of the common variables from the 1962 and 1973 data files. This file was designed to facilitate carrying out comparative analyses of the 1962 and 1973 data. Variables include respondent's age, employment history, military service (1973 only), marital history, ethnicity, income, education, and (in 1962 only) number of children. Also included is information about educational attainment and occupation of the head of the household in which the respondent lived at age 16, intact family, mother's educational attainment (1973 only), number of siblings, and educational attainment of the respondent's oldest and (in 1973 only) youngest brother. Similar data on education, current occupation, and income are available for wives of respondents, but social background data for wives are limited to father's occupation, father's education, number of siblings, and mother's education (1973 only).
