This data collection contains tables from the 1980 Census of Population and Housing, which were tabulated for Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSAs), tracted portions of states outside SMSAs, and the following SMSA components: counties, places with 10,000 or more inhabitants, and census tracts. The tables primarily contain sample data inflated to represent the total population, plus 100-percent counts and unweighted sample counts of persons and housing units. Tabulated population items include household relationship, sex, race, age, marital status, Spanish origin, education, nativity, citizenship, language spoken at home, ancestry, children, place of residence in 1975, veteran status, work disability status, labor force status, travel time to work, means of transportation to work, industry, occupation, class of worker, income, and poverty status. Tables of housing variables cover number of units at address, presence of complete plumbing facilities, number of rooms, tenure (whether owned or rented), vacancy status, housing unit value, contract rent, units in structure, stories in structure and presence of a passenger elevator, year structure was built, year householder moved into unit, acreage, source of water, sewage disposal, heating equipment, house heating fuel, water heating fuel, cooking fuel, kitchen facilities, number of bedrooms, number of bathrooms, telephone in housing unit, air conditioning, number of automobiles, vans, and light trucks, and selected monthly owner costs (real estate taxes, property insurance, utilities, and mortgage payments). Two series of population and housing tables, A and B, are shown for each geographic unit. The A tables are tabulated once for the total population, while the B tables are repeated for the total population and up to six different race and Spanish origin groups: (1) white, (2) Black, (3) American Indian, Eskimo and Aleut, (4) Asian and Pacific Islander, (5) other race, and (6) Spanish origin. The data for each state are contained in a separate file. Altogether, 48 states and the District of Columbia are represented in the collection.

This collection contains time series data, spanning 35 years, on general social indicators. The file includes data on vital statistics, population, the labor force, health, education, and leisure activities. Variables on vital statistics cover birth and death rates and life expectancy. Variables on population cover marriage, divorce, and age by sex. Labor force data contain information on employment and unemployment, percentages of the population employed in certain occupations, labor turnover, and family income. Health-related data include hospital and doctor visits, prescription costs, and nursing home expenses. Education data cover degrees conferred, educational attainment rates, and number of children enrolled in kindergarten and primary and secondary schools. Data on leisure activities cover sporting event attendance, automobile ownership, and utility consumption. Most of the data are reported on an annual basis extending from 1946 through 1980. Some data, such as the education data, are based on a less frequent observation cycle, and other data, such as health data, do not extend back to 1946. The study consists of a documentation file and a data file. The documentation contains a list of the variables, an alphabetized listing of the variables, and SPSS descriptives. The data file contains both the SPSS control cards and the data.

Open-ended questions were asked concerning evaluations and expectations about personal finances, employment, recession, price changes, and the national business situation. Additional variables probe respondents' buying intentions for a house, automobiles, appliances, and other consumer durables, and respondents' appraisals of present market conditions for purchasing houses and other durables. Other variables probe respondents' assessments of their financial status relative to the previous year, their views of the government in Washington, the need for governmental changes, military spending, government support for Black people, and their satisfaction with their income and their jobs, as well as their opinion of married women working outside the home, women's liberation, and penalties for marijuana use. Information is also provided on respondents' political party identification, time spent with their children, savings accounts, contributions to charitable organizations, and car ownership and plans to buy a new one. Demographic variables provide information on respondents' age, sex, race, ethnic group, marital status, education, occupation, employment status, and family income.

Information is also provided on respondents' car ownership and plans to buy a new one, political party identification, self-identified ideological position, political party candidate preference, and the state of health of respondents' parents, including the kind of health care and physical assistance provided to them. A series of questions addressed respondents' buying intentions for a house, automobiles, appliances, and other consumer durables, and respondents' appraisals of present market conditions for purchasing houses and other durables. Respondents were asked to give assessments of their financial status relative to the previous year, as well as their opinions of political leaders such as George Wallace, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and Ted Kennedy, the freedom to make public speeches against democracy, the most important problems facing the country, racial integration, fuel cost increase, and their satisfaction with their income, health, standard of living, marriage, and their life as a whole. The survey also elicited respondents' feelings about their choice of presidential candidate in 1972, their political party identification, ideological leanings, their income tax filing and refunds, their anticipated age for retiring, retirement income and residence, and their car ownership and plans to buy a new one. (The separate farmer's questionnaire, used in the 1947-1953 surveys, was dropped.)
