Age-by-Race Specific Crime Rates, 1965-1985: [United States] (ICPSR 9589)

These data examine the effects on total crime rates of changes in the demographic composition of the population and changes in criminality of specific age and race groups. The collection contains estimates from national data of annual age-by-race specific arrest rates and crime rates for murder, robbery, and burglary over the 21-year period 1965-1985. The data address the following questions: (1) Are the crime rates reported by the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) data series valid indicators of national crime trends? (2) How much of the change between 1965 and 1985 in total crime rates for murder, robbery, and burglary is attributable to changes in the age and race composition of the population, and how much is accounted for by changes in crime rates within age-by-race specific subgroups? (3) What are the effects of age and race on subgroup crime rates for murder, robbery, and burglary? (4) What is the effect of time period on subgroup crime rates for murder, robbery, and burglary? (5) What is the effect of birth cohort, particularly the effect of the very large (baby-boom) cohorts following World War II, on subgroup crime rates for murder, robbery, and burglary? (6) What is the effect of interactions among age, race, time period, and cohort on subgroup crime rates for murder, robbery, and burglary? (7) How do patterns of age-by-race specific crime rates for murder, robbery, and burglary compare for different demographic subgroups? The variables in this study fall into four categories. The first category includes variables that define the race-age cohort of the unit of observation. The values of these variables are directly available from UCR and include year of observation (from 1965-1985), age group, and race. The second category of variables were computed using UCR data pertaining to the first category of variables. These are period, birth cohort of age group in each year, and average cohort size for each single age within each single group. The third category includes variables that describe the annual age-by-race specific arrest rates for the different crime types. These variables were estimated for race, age, group, crime type, and year using data directly available from UCR and population estimates from Census publications. The fourth category includes variables similar to the third group. Data for estimating these variables were derived from available UCR data on the total number of offenses known to the police and total arrests in combination with the age-by-race specific arrest rates for the different crime types.

This collection contains individual-level and 1-percent national sample data from the 1960 Census of Population and Housing conducted by the Census Bureau. It consists of a representative sample of the records from the 1960 sample questionnaires. The data are stored in 30 separate files, containing in total over two million records, organized by state. Some files contain the sampled records of several states while other files contain all or part of the sample for a single state. There are two types of records stored in the data files: one for households and one for persons. Each household record is followed by a variable number of person records, one for each of the household members. Data items in this collection include the individual responses to the basic social, demographic, and economic questions asked of the population in the 1960 Census of Population and Housing. Data are provided on household characteristics and features such as the number of persons in household, number of rooms and bedrooms, and the availability of hot and cold piped water, flush toilet, bathtub or shower, sewage disposal, and plumbing facilities. Additional information is provided on tenure, gross rent, year the housing structure was built, and value and location of the structure, as well as the presence of air conditioners, radio, telephone, and television in the house, and ownership of an automobile. Other demographic variables provide information on age, sex, marital status, race, place of birth, nationality, education, occupation, employment status, income, and veteran status. The data files were obtained by ICPSR from the Center for Social Analysis, Columbia University.

The file includes counts of persons by single years of age (up to 75+ years) by sex, race, and Hispanic origin. Twenty-one Hispanic/racial groups are reported for each geographic area. These groups are total population, Hispanic (plus subgroups of white, Black, American Indian, Asian Indian, other specified, and other nonspecified Hispanic), non-Hispanic (including subgroups of white, Black, American Indian, Asian Indian, other specified, and other nonspecified non-Hispanic), white, Black, American Indian, Asian Indian, other specified, and other nonspecified. The file is sorted by county within each state.

Census of Population and Housing, 1990 [United States]: Modified Age/Race, Sex, and Hispanic Origin (MARS) State and County File (ICPSR 9878)

The MARS file contains modified race and age data based on the 1990 Census. Both race and age are tabulated by sex and Hispanic origin for several layers of geography. The race data were modified to make reporting categories comparable to those used by state and local agencies. The 1990 Census included 9,804,847 persons who checked the "other race" category and were therefore not included in one of the 15 racial categories listed on the Census form. "Other race" is usually not an acceptable reporting category for state and local agencies. Therefore, the Census Bureau assigned each "other race" person to the specified race reported by another person geographically close with an identical response to the Hispanic-origin question. Hispanic origin was taken into account because over 95 percent of the "other race" persons were of Hispanic origin. (Hispanic-origin persons may be of any race.) The assignment of race to Hispanic-origin persons did not affect the Hispanic-origin category that they checked (i.e, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, etc.). Age data were modified because respondents tended to report age as of the date they completed the 1990 questionnaire, instead of age as of the April 1, 1990 Census date. In addition, there may have been a tendency for respondents to round up their age if they were close to having a birthday. Age data for individuals in households were modified by adjusting the reported birth-year data by race and sex for each of the 1990 Census's 449 district offices to correspond with the national level quarterly distribution of births available from the National Center for Health Statistics. The data for persons in group quarters were adjusted similarly, but on a state basis. The age adjustment affects approximately 100 million people. In this file their adjusted age is one year different from that reported in the 1990 Census.

This is a special extract of the 2000 Census 5-Percent Public Use Microdata Samples (PUMS) created by the National Archive of Computerized Data on Aging (NACDA). The file combines the individual 5-percent state files for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico as released by the United States Census Bureau into a single analysis file. The file contains information on all households that contain at least one person aged 65 years or more in residence as of the 2000 Census enumeration. The file contains individual records on all persons aged 65 and older living in households as well as individual records for all other members residing in each of these households. Consequently, this file can be used to examine both the characteristics of the elderly in the United States as well as the characteristics of individuals who co-reside with persons aged 65 and older as of the year 2000. All household variables from the household-specific "Household record" of the 2000 PUMS are appended to the end of each individual level record. This file is not a special product of the Census Bureau and is not a resample of the PUMS data specific to the elderly population. The Human Mortality Database (HMD) was created to provide detailed mortality and population data to researchers, students, journalists, policy analysts, and others interested in the history of human longevity. The project began as an outgrowth of earlier projects in the Department of Demography at the University of California, Berkeley, USA, and at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany. It is the work of two teams of researchers in the USA and Germany. The main goal of the database is to document the longevity revolution of the modern era and to facilitate research into its causes and consequences. At present, the database contains detailed data for a collection of 26 countries. The countries involved are Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, the total and civilian populations of England and Wales, Finland, France, Germany, West Germany, East Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithunia, Netherlands, the Maori and Non-Maori populations of New Zealand, Norway, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States.

Kaiser Permanente Study of the Oldest Old, 1971-1979 and 1980-1988: [California] (ICPSR 4219)

This data collection is an epidemiological study of chronic disease in the oldest old. It is based on information collected from Kaiser Permanente facilities in Northern California. Members of Kaiser Permanente Medical Care programs who were aged 65 or older at the time the data were being collected and who had taken a multiphasic health checkup examination within four to six years of the baseline date were included in the study. There are several components to the dataset. Part 1, Master Records, includes information from the morbidity review, in which over 35 chronic conditions or diagnoses were abstracted from the member charts, as well as detailed diagnostic criteria for the major conditions. A prevalence review was done, which included the four years prior to the baseline date for these same conditions. Recurrent disease is included for the following conditions: cancers, myocardial infarction, and various forms of strokes. A detailed account of outpatient health services use, and data from the multiphasic health checkup, which was administered to each participant during the nine yearly follow-ups, are also included in the Master Records file. Part 2, Hospitalization, contains records of causes and dates of hospitalizations and discharges and nursing home admissions. There is also a section on incomplete reviews and the reasons for them. Demographic information and some lifestyle information from the multiphasic health checkup (e.g., smoking, alcohol, and Body Mass Index) are also in this file.

The Longitudinal Study of Generations (LSOG), initiated in 1971, began as a survey of intergenerational relations among 300 three-generation California families: grandparents (then in their sixties), middle-aged parents (then in their early forties), and grandchildren (then aged 15 to 26). The study broadened in 1991 and now includes a fourth generation, the great-grandchildren of these same families. The LSOG, with a fully elaborated generation-sequential design, allows comparisons of sets of aging parents and children at the same stage of life but during different historical periods. These comparisons make possible the investigation of the effects of social change on inter-generational solidarity or conflict across 35 years and four generations, as well as effects of social change on the ability of families to buffer stressful life transitions (aging, divorce and remarriage, higher female labor force participation, changes in work and the economy, and possible weakening of family norms of obligation), and the effects of social change on the transmission of values, resources, and behaviors across generations. The study also examines how intergenerational relationships influence individuals' well-being as they transition across the life course from early, to middle, to late adulthood. The LSOG contains information on family structure, household composition, affectual solidarity and conflict, values, attitudes, behaviors, role importance, marital relationships, health and fitness, mental health and well-being, caregiving, leisure activities, and life events and concerns. Demographic variables include age, sex, income, employment status, marital status, socioeconomic history, education, religion, ethnicity, and military service.

Midlife in the United States (MIDUS 1) National Study of Daily Experiences (NSDE), 1996-1997 (ICPSR 3725)

The National Study of Daily Experiences (NSDE) is one of the in-depth studies that are part of the MacAuthur Foundation National Survey of Midlife in the United States (MIDUS). The purpose of the NSDE is to examine the day-to-day lives, particularly the daily stressful experiences, of a subsample of MIDUS respondents. Although previous daily diary research has advanced understanding of daily stress processes, there are important limitations in these studies that are addressed in the NSDE. First, previous studies in this area have relied on small and often unrepresentative samples that limit the ability to generalize findings. For this reason, the NSDE uses a large national sample of adults in the United States. Second, previous studies of individual differences in exposure and reactivity to daily events have typically examined only one source of variability, such as personality, to the exclusion of others. The NSDE corrects this problem by utilizing the data collected in the larger MIDUS survey on a wide array of sociodemographic and psychosocial variables to study the determinants of exposure and reactivity to daily stress. Third, previous studies have failed to investigate the role of genetics in both exposure and reactivity to daily stressors. The NSDE has a subsample of identical and fraternal same-sex twin pairs in order to explore this issue. The twins were selected if twin pairs had high self-reported certainty of zygosity, had completed the MIDUS interview and questionnaires, and had mailed in their cheek cell samples. A wide range of information was obtained using the daily telephone interview. Conducting interviews for an entire year provided information about seasonal variation in daily experiences. Respondents completed an average of 7.2 of the 8 interviews resulting in a total of 10,397 days of interviews. Data collection consisted of 40 separate "flights" of interviews with each flight representing the eight-day sequence of interviews from approximately 33 respondents. The entire interview was CATI programmed, which enabled researchers to incorporate skip patterns and open ended probe questions as well as to keypunch data during the interview, allowing data cleaning throughout the data collection. Demographic information includes gender and age.

This data collection presents information about the causes of deaths occurring during 1981. Part 1, the Mortality Detail file, describes every death or fetal death registered in the United States for 1981. Part 2, Multiple Cause of Death, provides information about the causes of all recorded deaths occurring in the United States, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa during 1981. Data are provided concerning underlying causes of death, multiple conditions that caused the death, place of death, residence of the deceased (e.g., region, division, state, county), whether an autopsy was performed, and the month and day of death. In addition, data are supplied on the sex, race, age, marital status, education, usual occupation, and origin or descent of the deceased. The multiple cause of death fields were coded from the MANUAL OF THE INTERNATIONAL STATISTICAL CLASSIFICATION OF DISEASES, INJURIES, AND CAUSE-OF-DEATH, NINTH REVISION (ICD-9), VOLUMES 1 AND 2.

The Mortality Detail File: External Cause Extract is a special subset of data prepared from the MORTALITY DETAIL FILES, 1968-1991 (ICPSR 7632). Due to changes in Cause of Death definitions incorporated in the INTERNATIONAL CLASSIFICATION OF DISEASES, NINTH REVISION (ICD-9), the 1968-1978 data files differ slightly from the 1979-1980 data files. The 1968-1978 data reflect cause of death codes of the INTERNATIONAL CLASSIFICATION OF DISEASES ADAPTED FOR USE IN THE UNITED STATES, EIGHTH REVISION (ICDA-8). The period immediately following (1979-80) utilizes ICD-9 cause of death codes. In addition to the differences in the Cause of Death codes and recodes, the 1979-1980 data include three variables not available in the 1968-1978 datasets. These are: mortality by marital status, state or country of birth, and place of death and status of decedent when death occurred in a hospital or medical center. With these exceptions, the data are similar in structure and content to the 1968-1978 data and provide detailed personal and geographic information such as month and day of death, decedent's race and gender, age of deceased at time of death, place of decedent's residence (specific to the city level), place of death (specific to the county level), and whether an autopsy was performed. The 1979-1980 files also contain new variables pertinent to criminal justice research: handgun versus other gun accidents, handgun versus other firearm suicides, handgun versus other firearm homicides, and drug poison versus other poison homicides.

The multiple cause of death fields were coded from the MANUAL OF THE INTERNATIONAL STATISTICAL CLASSIFICATION OF DISEASES AND RELATED HEALTH PROBLEMS, TENTH REVISION (ICD-10).

The National Longitudinal Mortality Study (NLMS) consists of a database developed for the purpose of studying the effects of demographic and socio-economic characteristics on differentials in United States mortality rates. The NLMS database is based on a random sample of the non-institutionalized population of the United States. It consists of United States Census Bureau data from Current Population Surveys, annual Social and Economic Supplements and the 1980 Census combined with death certificate information to identify mortality status and cause of death.

The National Survey of Ambulatory Surgery (NSAS) was first conducted during the years 1994, 1995, and 1996 in response to the dramatic increase in the number of ambulatory surgery centers during the 1980's and early 1990's. The purpose of the first three years of the NSAS was to collect data on ambulatory (outpatient) surgery procedures performed in hospitals and free-standing ambulatory surgery centers in the United States. General demographic data pertaining to age, sex, and race were collected. Additionally, the 1994-1996 NSAS collected data on hospital diagnoses, outpatient procedures, the type of anesthesia used during the aforementioned outpatient procedures, and the payment methods for the procedures. Following a ten year hiatus, the NSAS was once again conducted in 2006. This iteration of the survey expands on the previous years' data collections. Like the 1994-1996 NSAS, the 2006 NSAS collected general demographic information on age and sex along with data on hospital diagnoses, outpatient procedures, and the type of anesthesia used during outpatient procedures. The 2006 NSAS collected additional data on patient symptoms, types of insurance, various time measures related to the medical procedures, and multiple measures pertaining to the status and health of the patients.

This data collection includes estimates of net migration by age, race, and sex for United States counties for the periods 1950-1960 and 1960-1970. These estimates were developed primarily by the census-survival ratios forward method, and adjusted to be consistent with vital statistics by county. The files contain geographical identifiers such as state, division, region, county name and GEO code. Data on births according to sex and race are presented as well as total population by age groups, sex and race (white vs. nonwhite). Net migration estimates and net migration rates for each category are also included.

Occupational Changes in a Generation, 1962 and 1973 (ICPSR 6162)

These data were collected to study the effect of men's backgrounds on their careers. The 1962 and 1973 surveys (Parts 1 and 2) were intended to supplement the March Current Population Surveys conducted by the Census Bureau. The Replicate Data file (Part 3) is a recoded subset of the common variables from the 1962 and 1973 data files. This file was designed to facilitate carrying out comparative analyses of the 1962 and 1973 data. Variables include respondent's age, employment history, military service (1973 only), marital history, ethnicity, income, education, and (in 1962 only) number of children. Also included is information about educational attainment and occupation of the head of the household in which the respondent lived at age 16, intact family, mother's educational attainment (1973 only), number of siblings, and educational attainment of the respondent's oldest and (in 1973 only) youngest brother. Similar data on education, current occupation, and income are available for wives of respondents, but social background data for wives are limited to father's occupation, father's education, number of siblings, and mother's education (1973 only).

This collection contains time series data, spanning 35 years, on general social indicators. The file includes data on vital statistics, population, the labor force, health, education, and leisure activities. Variables on vital statistics cover birth and death rates and life expectancy. Variables on population cover marriage, divorce, and age by sex. Labor force data contain information on employment and unemployment, percentages of the population employed in certain occupations, labor turnover, and family income. Health-related data include hospital and doctor visits, prescription costs, and nursing home expenses. Education data cover degrees conferred, educational attainment rates, and number of children enrolled in kindergarten and primary and secondary schools. Data on leisure activities cover sporting event attendance, automobile ownership, and utility consumption. Most of the data are reported on an annual basis extending from 1946 through 1980. Some data, such as the education data, are based on a less frequent observation cycle, and other data, such as health data, do not extend back to 1946. The study consists of a documentation file and a data file. The documentation contains a list of the variables, an alphabetized listing of the variables, and SPSS descriptives. The data file contains both the SPSS control cards and the data.

The Victoria Longitudinal Study (VLS) is a large-scale multi-faceted investigation of human aging. The VLS examines late-life changes in numerous aspects of health, cognition, biological status, adaptivity, and psychosocial factors. Operating in two sites (Edmonton, Alberta, and Victoria, British Columbia), the VLS examines profiles, patterns, and predictors of age-related changes in healthy, community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults.
