The Cross-National Equivalent File 1970-2009 contains equivalently defined variables for the British Household Panel Study (BHPS), the Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA), the Korea Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS), the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID), the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS-HSE), the Swiss Household Panel (SHP), the Canadian Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID), and the German Socio-Economic Panel (G-SOEP). The data are designed to allow cross-national researchers not experienced in panel data analysis to access a simplified version of these panels, while providing experienced panel data users with guidelines for formulating equivalent variables across countries. Most importantly, the equivalent file provides a set of constructed variables (for example pre- and post-government income and United States and international household equivalence weights) that are not directly available on the original surveys. Since the Cross-National Equivalent File 1970-2009 can be merged with the original surveys, PSID-CNEF users can easily incorporate these constructed variables into current analyses.

These data are a collection of demographic statistics for the populations of 125 countries or areas throughout the world, prepared by the Statistical Office of the United Nations. The units of analysis are both country and data year. The primary source of data is a set of questionnaires sent monthly and annually to national statistical services and other appropriate government offices. Data include statistics on approximately 50 types of causes of death for the years 1966 through 1974 for males, females, and total populations.

These data were gathered to provide information on the elderly in Fiji, Korea, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Questions were asked regarding demographic characteristics (age, race, sex, marital status, religion, household, number of children and siblings, education), economic resources (employment status of respondent and of respondent's spouse, main income source, other income sources, whether house was owned), health (current health status, accidents and/or injuries affecting daily activities, number of times respondent saw a health professional in the previous month, number of days in hospital, nursing home, or rehabilitation center in the previous month, medications currently used, usage of any devices to assist in getting around), activities of daily living, living habits (smoking or drinking), social activities (club membership, whether respondent had a confidant), housing (satisfaction with current living conditions, accessibility to quarters, safety), and mental state of the respondent.
