The data for this collection were gathered from the 1970 and 1980 Censuses and the Uniform Crime Reports for 1970 through 1980. The unit of analysis in this data collection is cities. Included are population totals by age group and arrest data for selected crimes by age group for Atlanta, Georgia, Chicago, Illinois, Denver, Colorado, Knoxville, Tennessee, San Jose, California, Spokane, Washington, and Tucson, Arizona. Population data by sex and age for all cities are contained in Part 4. The 123 variables provide data by age categories ranging from age 5 to age 69. Part 1, the arrest file for Atlanta and Chicago, provides arrest data for 1970 to 1980 by sex and age, ranging from age 10 and under to age 65 and over. The arrest data for other cities span two data files. Part 2 includes arrest data by sex for ages 15 to 24 for the years 1970 to 1980. Part 3 provides arrest data for ages 25 to 65 and over for the years 1970, 1975, and 1980. Arrest data are collected for the following crimes: murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, other assaults, arson, forgery, fraud, embezzlement, stolen property, vandalism, weapons, prostitution, other sex offenses, opium abuse, marijuana abuse, gambling, family offenses, drunk driving, liquor law violations, drunkenness, disorderly conduct, vagrancy, and all other offenses combined.

This data collection constitutes a portion of the historical data collected by the project "Early Indicators of Later Work Levels, Disease, and Death." With the goal of constructing datasets suitable for longitudinal analyses of factors affecting the aging process, the project is collecting military, medical, and socioeconomical data on a sample of white males mustered into the Union Army during the Civil War. The project seeks to examine the influence of environmental and host factors prior to recruitment on the health performance and survival of recruits during military service, to identify and show relationships between socioeconomic and biomedical conditions (including nutritional status) of veterans at early ages and mortality rates from diseases at middle and late ages, and to study the effects of health and pensions on labor force participation rates of veterans at ages 65 and over. This installment of the collection, Version M-5, supersedes any previous version of these data. Collected in this version are data from military service, pension, and medical records of veterans who were originally mustered into the Union Army in California, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin regiments. Also included are data from a 20-company pilot sample and information on recruits whose pension records were stored at the Veterans Administration (VA) Archives in Washington, DC, but had not been collected previously. Data include date and place of birth, place of residence, marital status, number of children, occupation, wealth and income, muster place and date, length of service, battles fought, medical experiences (e.g., illness, wounds, and hospital stays), health status, pension information, and date, place, and cause of death. Additional variables provide the place and date of birth of the recruits' wives, children, and parents. The data are organized into three sections according to state of enlistment. Section 1 (Parts 1, 2, 3, and 4) contains data from New England, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, Iowa, New Jersey, Indiana, Wisconsin, California, New Mexico, and the 20-company pilot sample. Section 2 (Parts 5, 6, 7, and 8) contains data from New York, Michigan, Washington, DC, Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and West Virginia, along with pensions data from the VA Archives. Section 3 (Parts 9, 10, 11, and 12) contains data from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. The variables in Part 13, Linkage Data, indicate which major document sources were located for each recruit. Also, provided is information regarding death dates (Part 14) for individuals whose death records came from the pension payout cards. Approximate date of death was determined by examining the last record of payment to the pensioner.

Data include year the structure was built, type and number of living quarters, occupancy status, presence of commercial or medical establishments on the property, and property value. Additional data focus on kitchen and plumbing facilities, type of heating fuel used, source of water, sewage disposal, and heating and air conditioning equipment. Data concerned with housing quality describe the condition of the walls and floors, adequacy of heat in the winter, information on heating equipment breakdowns, availability of room electrical outlets, concealed wiring, and basement and roof water leakage. Data relating to housing expenses include mortgage or monthly rent payments, utility costs, and fuel and garbage collection fees. Information solicited from respondents who moved recently included the characteristics of the previous unit and reasons for moving. Other data indicate the presence of and objection to neighborhood conditions such as street noise, crime, litter, commercial activity, and institutional industrial activity, as well as the availability of public transportation, schools, shopping facilities, police, and hospitals. Information on condominiums covers amount and frequency of mortgage payment, amount of property insurance, real estate tax, utility costs, and condominium fees. In addition to housing characteristics, data for each household member are available on age, sex, race, marital status, income, and relationship to householder. Additional data on years of school completed, Spanish origin, length of residence, and tenure are provided for the householder. This data collection provides travel-to-work data for respondents living in 21 Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSAs). Data cover respondents' place of work, means of transportation to work, carpooling and carpool occupancy, time and distance from home to work, and time of departure for work. The data also include transportation-related information such as access to a garage or carport at respondent's home, cost of rented parking spaces, and number of cars owned. Information about respondents's neighborhoods includes existence of street noise or heavy street traffic, poor street conditions, crime, objectionable odors, adequacy of schools, fire and police protection, health clinics, and respondents' opinions of the overall neighborhood quality. The data contained in this collection are from the travel-to-work supplement in ANNUAL HOUSING SURVEY, 1975 [UNITED STATES]: SMSA FILES (ICPSR 7976). The travel-to-work supplement was sponsored by the United States Department of Transportation, and the data was collected by the Census Bureau during April 1975 through March 1976. The data are contained in 21 files, one file for each SMSA represented. Demographic information collected on each respondent includes sex, age, race, marital status, and household relationship. Additional information on the household head includes educational attainment, Hispanic origin, and length of residence in current domicile.

This data collection provides information on the characteristics of the housing inventory in 13 Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSAs). Data include year the structure was built, type and number of living quarters, occupancy status, presence of commercial establishments on the property, presence of a garage, and property value. Additional data focus on kitchen and plumbing facilities, type of heating fuel used, source of water, sewage disposal, and heating and air conditioning equipment. Information about housing expenses includes mortgage or rent payments, utility costs, garbage collection fees, property insurance, and real estate taxes as well as repairs, additions, or alterations to the property. Similar data are provided for housing units previously occupied by respondents who had recently moved. Indicators of housing and neighborhood quality are also supplied. Housing quality variables include privacy of bedrooms, condition of kitchen facilities, basement or roof leakage, presence of cracks or holes in walls, ceilings, or floor, reliability of plumbing and heating equipment, and concealed electrical wiring. The presence of storm doors and windows and insulation was also noted. Neighborhood quality variables indicate presence of and objection to street noise, odors, crime, litter, and rundown and abandoned structures, as well as the adequacy of street lighting, public transportation, public parks, schools, shopping facilities, and police and fire protection. Extra information is provided on mobile homes and condominiums including mortgage payments, purchase price, and real estate taxes. In addition to housing characteristics, demographic data for household members are provided, including sex, age, race, income, marital status, and household relationship. Additional data are available for the household head, including Hispanic origin, length of residence, and travel-to-work information.

Data for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and for each of the approximately 4,000 counties and county equivalents in the United States and Puerto Rico were subsetted from the 1980 Census of Population and Housing, Summary Tape File 1 (STF 1) and aggregated to the PSA level. The file contains 312 substantive data variables organized in the form of 53 "tables", as well as geographic codes for region, state code, PSA, and land area. The remaining STF 1 geographic codes and the six tables representing median values are not included. Data for each PSA include ethnicity and age of residents, housing units, and units rented.

This collection contains individual-level and 1-percent national sample data from the 1960 Census of Population and Housing conducted by the Census Bureau. It consists of a representative sample of the records from the 1960 sample questionnaires. The data are stored in 30 separate files, containing in total over two million records, organized by state. Some files contain the sampled records of several states while other files contain all or part of the sample for a single state. There are two types of records stored in the data files: one for households and one for persons. Each household record is followed by a variable number of person records, one for each of the household members. Data items in this collection include the individual responses to the basic social, demographic, and economic questions asked of the population in the 1960 Census of Population and Housing. Data are provided on household characteristics and features such as the number of persons in household, number of rooms and bedrooms, and the availability of hot and cold piped water, flush toilet, bathtub or shower, sewage disposal, and plumbing facilities. Additional information is provided on tenure, gross rent, year the housing structure was built, and value and location of the structure, as well as the presence of air conditioners, radio, telephone, and television in the house, and ownership of an automobile. Other demographic variables provide information on age, sex, marital status, race, place of birth, nationality, education, occupation, employment status, income, and veteran status. The data files were obtained by ICPSR from the Center for Social Analysis, Columbia University.

It links state or state equivalent, county or county equivalent, minor civil division (MCD)/census county division (CCD), and place names with their respective geographic codes. It is also an abbreviated summary file containing selected population and housing unit counts. MARF 2 has the same geographic coverage as the first MARF and includes the following additional information: FIPS place codes, latitude and longitude coordinates for geographic areas down to the BG/ED level, land area in square miles for geographic areas down to the level of places or minor civil divisions (for 11 selected states) with a population of 2,500 or more, total population and housing count estimates based on sample returns, and per capital income for all geographic areas included in the file. These data files provide population counts for racial and ethnic groups living in all the jurisdictions of the states in the United States in 1980. These data were produced as part of the Census Bureau's commitment under Public Law 94-171 to aid states' legislatures in the redistricting process. Public Law 171 of the 94th Congress was passed in 1975 to help facilitate the one-man-one-vote concept enunciated in 1963. It specifies procedures for conducting the decennial census for those states wishing to participate and makes improvements for reporting the findings as well. As a result of this law, the Census Bureau was authorized to prepare for each state a data file that contains population counts for racial and ethnic groups living in all the jurisdictions of the state. Each of these files contains summary statistics for seven population groups/types: Whites, Blacks, American Indians, Eskimos and Aleuts, Asians and Pacific Islanders, Spanish-Hispanics, total population, and population of other races. Each record in each of the files is a type of census reporting area arranged in hierarchical order. There are 51 data files, one for each of the states plus one for Washington, DC. Each of the files has the same format of 156-character logical records with characters 1-100 containing identification data and the alphabetic name of the record and characters 101-156 containing the data for the seven population groups/types. Data are provided for states or state equivalent, counties or county equivalent, minor civil divisions (MCDs) or census county divisions (CCDs), incorporated places, election precincts or their equivalent (if any), census tracts or block numbering areas (BNAs) (if any), and block groups and blocks in blocked areas, or enumeration districts in nonblock-numbered areas. The Census Bureau has produced a file, User Note No.#2 (Part 90), to accompany the PL94-171 series that documents a problem encountered in all but nine states in the series. The nine states NOT affected are Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The file contains a list of places split across counties or MCD/CCDs that have two partial records but do not have a "part" indicator on either record. Because of the omission of this part indicator, it is not possible to connect the two parts of the same record (place) for analysis purposes without the User Note No.#2 that allows researchers to identify these places and use the data for them more easily. There are 5,971 records (split places) in the file, each with a logical record length of 48.

Each person identified in the sample has an associated household record, containing information on household characteristics such as type of household and family income.

This data collection, sponsored and funded by the United States Administration on Aging, provides summary statistics on the elderly population in the United States. Each data file in STP 14A contains 483 population and 228 housing tables that present data for all persons and housing units. STP 14A supplies sample data weighted to represent the total population. In addition, the file contains 100-percent counts and unweighted sample counts for total persons and total housing units. Population tables include information on items such as race, Hispanic origin, sex, marital status, income, employment, and poverty across a number of age dimensions (age 60 and older). Housing tables detail information on items such as household type, vehicles owned, mobility, self-care, rent, and home value across a number of householder age dimensions (age 60 and older). This is a special extract of the 2000 Census 5-Percent Public Use Microdata Samples (PUMS) created by the National Archive of Computerized Data on Aging (NACDA). The file combines the individual 5-percent state files for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico as released by the United States Census Bureau into a single analysis file. The file contains information on all households that contain at least one person aged 65 years or more in residence as of the 2000 Census enumeration. The file contains individual records on all persons aged 65 and older living in households as well as individual records for all other members residing in each of these households. Consequently, this file can be used to examine both the characteristics of the elderly in the United States as well as the characteristics of individuals who co-reside with persons aged 65 and older as of the year 2000. All household variables from the household-specific "Household record" of the 2000 PUMS are appended to the end of each individual level record. This file is not a special product of the Census Bureau and is not a resample of the PUMS data specific to the elderly population. The Chicago Community Adult Health Study (CCAHS) consists of four interrelated components that were conducted simultaneously: (1) a survey of adult health on a probability sample of 3,105 Chicago adults, including direct physical measurements of their blood pressure and heart rate and of height, weight, waist and hip circumference, and leg length; (2) a biomedical supplement which collected blood and/or saliva samples on a subset of 661 survey respondents; (3) a community survey in which individuals described aspects of the social environment of all survey respondents' neighborhoods; and (4) a systematic social observation (SSO) of the blocks in which potential survey respondents resided, including a lost letter drop (Milgram et al. 1965) as an unobtrusive measure of neighborhood social capital/sense of responsibility to help others. The latter two extend a community survey and SSO of neighborhoods carried out by the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN) in 1995. The adult health survey and the community survey were conducted jointly through face-to-face interviews with a stratified, multistage probability sample of 3,105 individuals aged 18 and over and living in the city of Chicago, with a response rate of 72 percent that is about the highest currently attainable in large urban areas. In addition, blood pressure, heart rate, and physical measurements (of height, weight, waist and hips, and leg length) were collected during the survey interview, and blood and saliva samples from 661 respondents or 60 percent of those doing the survey in the 80 "focal" neighborhood clusters (NCs). SSOs were conducted on 1,663 of the 1,672 city blocks on which each respondent lived. The CCAHS is the largest of five projects under the NIH-funded Michigan Interdisciplinary Center on Social Inequalities, Mind and Body Mind (#P50HD38986), one of five Mind-Body Centers funded by the National Institutes of Health in late 1999. This study will advance the understanding of socioeconomic and racial/ethnic disparities in health, a major priority of the Public Health Service and the National Institutes of Health.

This study examined the implementation of regulations for board and care homes, and investigated formal and informal connections between these facilities and community health and social service agencies. To this end, board and care home inspectors were interviewed about their inspection practices. Inspectors were queried about the types and numbers of board and care homes inspected, frequency of inspections, consistency of regulations across types of board and care homes, proportion of time spent for initial inspections and inspections of homes already licensed, percent of time spent in specific inspection activities, areas used to determine compliance, frequently reported problems, which deficiencies inspectors consider serious, the use of inspection teams, participation of other agencies or specialists, who sees the inspection reports (e.g., agencies, departments, individuals, the public), number of license renewals and revocations, percent of last 50 homes in total compliance, number of complaint investigations in the last three months, percent of complaint reports substantiated, number of unlicensed homes in the area and type of action taken, and number of homes with social service or community-based health agency arrangements. The data concerning racial composition of counties were taken from the CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING, 1980 [UNITED STATES]: P.L. 94-171 POPULATION COUNTS (ICPSR 7854). The figures concerning per capita income were taken from the Bureau of the Census, GENERAL REVENUE SHARING, 1978 POPULATION ESTIMATES (ICPSR 7840). Course of Domestic Abuse Among Chicago's Elderly: Risk Factors, Protective Behaviors, and Police Intervention, 2006-2009 (ICPSR 29041)

The study was conducted to examine if and how risk factors and protective behaviors affect the course of elder abuse over time, and the role of police in intervening with elderly victims of domestic abuse and/or neglect. It also examined the prevalence rates for various types of abuse using a stratified sample of Chicago's elderly population. The study involved in-depth interviews with 328 elderly (aged 60 and over) residents of Chicago from three sample groups: (1) 159 community nonvictims; (2) 121 community victims; and (3) a police sample consisting of 48 elderly victims who had been visited by trained domestic violence/senior citizen victimization officers in the Chicago Police Department. The interviews were conducted using a survey instrument designed to assess victimization. The survey included questions about various characteristics and risk factors associated both with victims and perpetrators of abuse and/or neglect, specific types of abuse, and protective behaviors of victims. Victimization was examined twice over a 10-month period to evaluate the course of abuse over time. The efficacy of police intervention was also examined.

Financial Exploitation and Psychological Abuse of Older Adults in the Chicago Metropolitan Area, 2007-2008 [United States] (ICPSR 26881)

The research team developed two self-reporting questionnaires, the Older Adult Mistreatment Assessment (OAMA) Client Questionnaire and the OAMA Staff Questionnaire, in order to measure for financial exploitation and psychological abuse of the elderly. The OAMA Client Questionnaire was administered to clients aged 60 years and over who had been substantiated for at least one form of elderly mistreatment within the Chicago metropolitan area. In addition, a corresponding Staff Questionnaire was administered to each evaluator involved in the field test and submitted on behalf of each client in the study. In all, 227 client interviews with 227 corresponding staff questionnaires were compiled between 2007 and 2008, and scales were developed for measurements of both financial exploitation and psychological abuse. Financial exploitation of the elderly was measured through variables related to theft, scams, coercion, signs of abuse or financial entitlement by trusted friends or family members, and money management difficulties. Psychological abuse of the elderly was measured through variables related to isolation, disrespect, exploited vulnerability, shame, threats and intimidation, and risk factors related to the client's trusted friends or family.

This data collection contains current population estimates and per capita money income for counties and minor civil divisions in each state. These estimates were developed to provide updates of the data elements in Federal Revenue Sharing allocations under the state and local Fiscal Assistance Act of 1972. Population estimates recorded in the dataset are for July 1, 1978, while per capita income estimates are for 1969 and 1977. The units recorded in the data collection include counties, incorporated places, certain towns in New England, New York, and Wisconsin, and townships in other states. Certain Midwestern states may have active minor civil divisions in some counties, but not in others. In addition to these estimates, April 1, 1970, population and 1969 and 1975 per capita money income are included for each area. The Historical Urban Ecological (HUE) data project was created for exploring and analyzing the urban health environments of seven major United States cities - Baltimore, Boston, Brooklyn, Chicago, Cincinnati, Manhattan, and Philidelphia - from 1830 through 1930. The data for each city includes ward boundary changes, street networks, and ward-level data on disease, mortality, crime, and other variables reported by municipal departments. The HUE data set was produced for the "Early Indicators of Later Work Levels, Disease and Death" project, funded by the National Institute of Aging. This collection represents the GIS data for each of the seven American cities, and in addition to ward boundary changes and street networks, includes in-street sewer and water sanitation systems coverage. All cities except Cincinnati include sanitation infrastructure data, and for Baltimore only water infrastructure is available. The city of Chicago includes supplemental GIS layers which reflect a reconstruction of two of Homer Hoyt's maps of average land value (1933 dollars) in the City of Chicago for 1873 and 1892. The square mile areas defined by Hoyt using Chicago's system of mile streets have been fit to the HUE street centerlines for Chicago. The Excel data tables include information about deaths in each ward broken down by cause of death, age, race, gender, as well as information about live births and deliveries.

This survey of minority groups was part of a larger project to investigate the patterns, predictors, and consequences of midlife development in the areas of physical health, psychological well-being, and social responsibility. Conducted in Chicago and New York City, the survey was designed to assess the well-being of middle-aged, urban, ethnic minority adults living in both hyper-segregated neighborhoods and in areas with lower concentrations of minorities. Respondents' views were sought on issues relevant to quality of life, including health, childhood and family background, religion, race and ethnicity, personal beliefs, work experiences, marital and close relationships, financial situation, children, community involvement, and neighborhood characteristics. Questions on health explored the respondents' physical and emotional well-being, past and future attitudes toward health, physical limitations, energy level and appetite, amount of time spent worrying about health, and physical reactions to those worries. Questions about childhood and family background elicited information on family structure, the role of the parents with regard to child rearing, parental education, employment status, and supervisory responsibilities at work, the family financial situation including experiences with the welfare system, relationships with siblings, and whether as a child the respondent slept in the same bed as a parent or adult relative. Questions on religion covered religious preference, whether it is good to explore different religious teachings, and the role of religion in daily decision-making. Questions about race and ethnicity investigated respondents' backgrounds and experiences as minorities, including whether respondents preferred to be with people of the same racial group, how important they thought it was to marry within one's racial or ethnic group, citizenship, reasons for moving to the United States and the challenges faced since their arrival, their native language, how they would rate the work ethic of certain ethnic groups, their views on race relations, and their experiences with discrimination. Questions on personal beliefs probed for respondents' satisfaction with life and confidence in their opinions. Respondents were asked whether they had control over changing their life or their personality, and what age they viewed as the ideal age. They also rated people in their late 20s in the areas of physical health, contribution to the welfare and well-being of others, marriage and close relationships, relationships with their children, work situation, and financial situation. Questions on work experiences covered respondents' employment status, employment history, future employment goals, number of hours worked weekly, number of nights away from home due to work, exposure to the risk of accident or injury, relationships with coworkers and supervisors, work-related stress, and experience with discrimination in the workplace. A series of questions was posed on marriage and close relationships, including marital status, quality and length of relationships, whether the respondent had control over his or her relationships, and spouse/partner's education, physical and mental health, employment status, and work schedule. Questions on finance explored respondents' financial situation, financial planning, household income, retirement plans, insurance coverage, and whether the household had enough money.
