This survey posed a series of questions on the first presidential debate concerning whom the respondent viewed as the winner, how the debate affected the respondent's opinion of each candidate, for whom the respondent intended to vote, whether the candidates could be trusted to deal with the problems a president faces, the candidate best able to solve the country's economic problems, the effect of George Bush's attack on Bill Clinton's activities as a student at Oxford during the Vietnam War, and the likelihood of the respondent's watching the next presidential debate. Demographic variables include respondent's sex, number of adults in the household, and number of women in the household.

2012-04-25 The data have been converted from ASCII card-image format to ASCII column-delimited format. SPSS, SAS, and Stata setup files, as well as SPSS and Stata system files, a SAS transport (CPORT) file, and a tab-delimited ASCII data file have been added. The codebook has been updated.
1993-12-18 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Created variable labels and/or value labels.
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
