The University of Michigan (U-M) contracted with Rankin Climate, LLC, to conduct an assessment of all campuses and Michigan Medicine via an anonymous survey of students, faculty, and staff focused on sexual harassment and gender-based misconduct in the winter and spring of 2024. Data gathered from the 2024 Campus Climate Survey Related to Sex and Gender assessed the prevalence of sexual harassment and misconduct, perceptions of these issues on U-M campuses, and awareness of campus responses and resources. A randomized sample of the undergraduate and graduate/professional student populations was selected and recruited to complete the survey.

The purpose of this study was to collect comprehensive information on the experiences and perceptions of the University of Michigan's student and employee communities regarding sexual and gender-based harassment and misconduct.

Thirty-five core questions assessed a variety of perceptions and experiences related to campus sexual and gender-based misconduct, including:

  • Perceptions of safety on and around campus
  • Awareness of campus resources
  • Knowledge related to sexual misconduct prevention
  • Experiences with sexual and gender-based misconduct

The sample included a random 10% of all U-M students, faculty, and staff at the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint Campuses and Michigan Medicine. Black/African American and Hispanic community members were oversampled by 10% to account for underrepresentation in past climate assessments conducted at U-M. The university utilized a stratified sample approach, surveying representative subgroups of the University population to bring equity to the data collection process and reliability to the findings.

Cross-sectional

A post-stratification survey weight variable is included in the dataset to account for slight representation differences regarding race/ethnicity (POSTRAT_RACE_ETH_INT). Weights were calculated separately for each campus and Michigan Medicine.
