Study Purpose View help for Study Purpose
The purpose of this study was to compile various weather data for counties in the United States from 2003 to 2016.
Study Design View help for Study Design
These data are derived from the Global Historical Climatology Network - Daily (GHCN-Daily) dataset, distributed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Geocoded locations of the weather stations were obtained from the GHCN-Daily website. These geocodes were spatially joined to 2010 United States county shapefiles. The datasets contain one observation per day per county in the contiguous United States and Washington DC. Alaska, Hawaii, and United States island territories are excluded.

Description of Variables View help for Description of Variables
The study includes data on 8 weather conditions with each weather condition having 14 data files (years 2003 to 2016). Data files 1-14 (Average Temperatures, years 2003 to 2016) all contain the same 14 variables. For the remaining weather conditions, the 2003 data files contain 18 variables, and data files for years 2004 to 2016 contain 20 variables.

2023-09-14 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Created variable labels and/or value labels.
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
Notes
The public-use data files in this collection are available for access by the general public. Access does not require affiliation with an ICPSR member institution.
