The County Business Patterns ("CBP") is a data product by the U.S. Census Bureau that reports employment and establishment counts by industry and county. These files contain employment and establishment counts for detailed industry codes covering all counties in the United States from 1946-1974. Methods developed in Eckert, Fort, Schott, and Yang (2020a) were applied to impute missing employment observations in the raw data.

1946 -- 1974
  1. Additional information can be found at the project website.
  2. Data is not available for every year. Below is additional information about what years data are or are not available:

    • Between 1946 and 1974, CBP were published in 1946-1951, 1953, 1956, 1959, 1962, 1964-1974;
    • 1946 has no suppression and thus is only included in the raw data, and only on the county-level;
    • 1949 and 1950 include information on manufacturing industries only;
    • 1970-1974 only have county-level data in the raw files.

The purpose of this study was to digitize, clean, and prepare the County Business Pattern files from 1946-1974.

Longitudinal

All business establishments in the 50 states and the District of Columbia with one or more paid employees, excluding agriculture production, railroad, government, and household employment.

County, Other

There are three categories of datasets: (1) the raw datasets for each year, (2) a consolidated panel dataset of employment and establishment counts for about 20 industries and all US counties, (3) estimates for suppressed employment counts for each year. Variables across all three categories include FIPS state and county codes, Standard Industry Classification (SIC) codes, and number of establishments with different ranges of number of employees.

2023-12-04 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Created variable labels and/or value labels.
