The Grassroots and Other COVID-19 Organizing Efforts Dataset was developed to uniformly collect data regarding grassroots efforts that occurred inside and outside of carceral facilities from March 2020 to December 2021 throughout the United States. The efforts that were documented specifically pertain to improving sanitary conditions in carceral facilities and the release of people due to COVID-19.

The purpose of this study is to serve as a source of compiled information regarding grassroots efforts that occurred inside and outside of carceral facilities from March 2020 to December 2021 throughout the United States.

The variables in the data include names of organizations, their efforts, and the jurisdictions that they are active in.

2023-04-27

2023-04-27 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Created variable labels and/or value labels.
  • Performed recodes and/or calculated derived variables.
