Summary

The Japanese General Social Surveys (JGSS) Project is a Japanese version of the General Social Survey (GSS) project closely replicating the original GSS of the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. It provides data for analyses of Japanese society, attitudes, and behaviors, which make possible international comparisons. Respondents were asked about employment and career growth, family and household composition, education, entertainment, technology and Internet usage, status and opinions on mental and physical health, alcohol and tobacco use, participation in gambling, addiction, life satisfaction, voting behavior, opinions on political and social issues, income, taxes and government expenditure, family beliefs and issues, trust in people and institutions, membership in organizations, views on burial, sustainability measures, and their neighborhood environment. Demographic questions included age, sex, marital status, household income, and religious orientation and behavior.

Data Collection Notes

  1. The Japanese General Social Surveys (JGSS) are designed and carried out by the JGSS Research Center at Osaka University of Commerce (Joint Usage/Research Center for Japanese General Social Surveys accredited by Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology), in collaboration with the Institute of Social Science at the University of Tokyo.

  2. While the Japanese General Social Survey is conducted solely in the Japanese language, the data file and codebook in this study is produced in English using the ICPSR-processed English language version of the data and documentation.

Study Purpose

The purpose of this study is to collect information as a means to create an overall view on the general lifestyles and experiences of Japanese citizens.

Study Design

This study consists of a combination of responses to interviews and self-administered questions.

Sample

The JGSS used two-stage stratified random sampling. For detailed sampling information, please refer to the Sampling and Administration P.I. Documentation.

The variables in this study, in addition to administrative information, include demographic information about respondents, their socio-economic and educational background, and details about regular activities.

Version History

2021-03-11 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Created online analysis version with question text.
  • Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
