This special topic poll, conducted March 27, 2003, was undertaken to assess public opinion on the war against Iraq. Respondents were asked whether they approved of the way President George W. Bush was handling the situation with Iraq and Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. Those polled were asked whether they supported or opposed the war, how the war was going, whether the Iraqi resistance had been tougher or weaker than expected, how long the war would last, and whether the United States and its allies had done the right thing by going to war. Views were sought on whether the United States had been aggressive enough in the ground war and in the air war, the likelihood that the United States would become bogged down in a drawn-out war with Iraq, whether the number of United States military casualties had been acceptable, and whether everything had been done to avoid civilian casualties. Those polled were asked whether the United States had provided enough humanitarian aid to the Iraqi people and if not, who was to blame, whether the people in Iraq were on the side of the United States or Hussein, and who should take the leading role in rebuilding Iraq after the war. A series of questions addressed the $726 billion tax cut over ten years proposed by the Bush administration. Topics covered the Senate reduction of the proposed tax cut to $350 billion and whether respondents would support or oppose the elimination of the tax cut in its entirety.
