Summary

This poll, the first of two fielded June 2014, is a part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that solicits public opinion on a range of political and social issues. Respondents were asked primarily about Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, a United States soldier who had been held captive by the Taliban and was released in exchange for five Taliban members that were being held by the United States. Opinions were collected on how President Obama handled the prisoner exchange, whether he should have notified Congress prior to the exchange, whether the terms of the exchange were reasonable, whether Sgt. Bergdahl deliberately abandoned his post, and what effect the exchange would have on the threat of terrorism against the United States. Demographic information includes sex, age, race, marital status, education level, household income, type of residential area (e.g., urban or rural), political party affiliation, and whether respondents were or resided with a veteran of the United States armed forces or the reserves.

Sample

This poll was conducted by telephone June 8-9, 2014 among 1,013 adults nationwide. Data collection was conducted on behalf of CBS News by SSRS of Media, PA. Phone numbers were dialed from samples of both standard land-line and cell phones. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The error for subgroups may be higher. Results based on the sample of veterans is plus or minus eight points. Interviews were conducted in English and Spanish. This poll release conforms to the Standards of Disclosure of the National Council on Public Polls.

2015-12-23 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. Weight

The data are not weighted. However, the dataset contains a weight variable (WEIGHT) that should be used in analyzing the data. According to the CBS News Web site, the data were weighted to match the United States Census Bureau breakdowns on age, sex, race, education, and region of the country. The data were also adjusted for the fact that people who share a telephone with others have less chance to be contacted than people who live alone and have their own telephones, and that households with more than one telephone number have more chances to be called than households with only one telephone number.
