Summary

This poll, the first of two fielded in May of 2014, is part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that solicits public opinion on a range of political and social issues. Respondents were asked how well Barack Obama was handling the presidency, foreign policy, the economy, health care, and the situation between Russia and Ukraine. Opinions were collected on the state of the national economy, global warming, the death penalty, whether Congress was performing their job well, the Keystone XL pipeline, and the 2010 health care law. This survey also had a particular focus on the voting preferences of respondents, including whether they intended to vote in the 2014 midterm election, their perspectives on issues facing the Republican and Democratic parties, and their political affiliation more generally. Demographic information includes age, race, ethnicity, marital status, education level, household income, type of residential area (e.g., urban or rural), voter registration status, and religious preference.

Sample

This poll was conducted by telephone May 16-19, 2014 among 1,009 adults nationwide. Data collection was conducted on behalf of CBS News by SSRS of Media, PA. Phone numbers were dialed from samples of both standard land-line and cell phones. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The error for subgroups may be higher. Interviews were conducted in English and Spanish. This poll release conforms to the Standards of Disclosure of the National Council on Public Polls.

2016-01-12 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. Weight

The data are not weighted. However, the dataset contains a weight variable (WEIGHT) that should be used in analyzing the data. According to the CBS News Web site, the data were weighted to match the United States Census Bureau breakdowns on age, sex, race, education, and region of the country. The data were also adjusted for the fact that people who share a telephone with others have less chance to be contacted than people who live alone and have their own telephones, and that households with more than one telephone number have more chances to be called than households with only one telephone number.
