Modified Race Summary File, April 1, 2010

The 2010 Census Modified Race Summary File contains modified population counts for race categories. The modification reconciles the 2010 Census race classification which includes the category "Some Other Race" with race classifications used by some government agencies which lack this residual category. Applying a method it developed, the Census Bureau assigned persons who reported Some Other Race to one or more of five race categories: White; Black or African American; American Indian and Alaska Native; Asian; and Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander.

The Census Bureau prepared two comma-delimited plain text data files with the modified race counts tabulated by five-year age groups, gender and Hispanic origin for all counties and county equivalents in the United States. One file covers Alabama through Missouri (STCO-MR2010_AL_MO.csv) and the other Montana through Wyoming (STCO-MR2010_MT_WY.csv). A third file contains the modified race and original Census 2010 race distributions for the United States as a whole (totals only, not broken down by age, gender or Hispanic origin). The Census Bureau produced the third file in two data formats: Excel (US-MR2010-01.xls) and comma-delimited plain text (US-MR2010-01.xls). ICPSR bundled all of the data files in a single ZIP archive.

The ICPSR codebook for the Modified Race Summary File comprises two documents prepared by the Census Bureau: a methodology statement and record layout for the two county-level files.
