This poll, conducted October 11, 2000, is part of a continuing series of surveys that solicit public opinion on the presidency and on a range of other political and social issues. The study was conducted to assess respondents' interest in and reaction to the second of three presidential debates, between Republican candidate and Texas governor George W. Bush and Democratic candidate and Vice President Al Gore, held earlier that evening. Respondents who watched and/or listened to the debate were asked who they thought won the debate, whether they learned anything new about the candidates, and whether their opinion of either candidate was changed by the debate. An additional question assessed respondents' confidence in Gore and Bush to deal wisely with an international crisis. Respondents were also asked whom they intended to vote for in the upcoming election: Gore (Democratic Party candidate), Bush (Republican Party candidate), Pat Buchanan (Reform Party candidate), or Ralph Nader (Green Party candidate). Background information on respondents includes age, gender, political party, political orientation, voter registration and participation history, religion, marital status, education, Hispanic descent, race, years in community, children in household, and household income.
