This special topic poll sought the views of Virginia residents on the November 1997 gubernatorial election. Respondents were asked to give their opinions of gubernatorial candidates James S. Gilmore (Republican) and Donald S. Beyer (Democrat), lieutenant governor candidates John Hager (Republican) and L.F. Payne (Democrat), attorney general candidates Mark Earley (Republican) and William Dolan (Democrat), and incumbent governor George F. Allen. Those queried were asked to assess the importance of the following issues: transportation and roads, taxes, public education, the economy, crime, family values, state spending, and abortion. Respondents were asked whether they supported two current plans to eliminate state personal property taxes on state vehicles and state tax credits. Additional topics included the positive and negative aspects of the election campaign and support for parental or spousal consent laws on abortion. Background information on respondents includes age, race, ethnicity, sex, education, political party, political orientation, religion, voter registration and participation history, marital status, family income, and age of children in household.
