The Archives Administrators Survey endeavored to reach administrators leading archives in the United States. Archives administrators are defined as the most senior leaders and decision makers at their archives, regardless of archive size. Administrators may oversee large archives organizations, archives departments or units situated within broader institutions, or community archives collections. Archives administrators may manage employees or volunteers or, in some cases, may be the sole steward of an archival collection.

Respondents were asked about the characteristics of their archives department or organization; staff scope; administrator responsibilities; recruitment and retention; funding and spending; organizational strategy; diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility; the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic; upskilling and professional development; and community archives.

Demographic variables include respondents' years in their current role, total years of experience, degrees, age, gender, race, and sexual orientation, as well as whether they are transgender, have a disability, or are a care-giver.

The Age and Generations Study documented employee and employer outcomes related to the experiences of multi-generational teams in five industry sectors, and examined how the work relationships of these team members might change over time. The five industry sectors included in this collection were retail, pharmaceuticals, finance, health care, and higher education. Various questions focused on the organization and on how the interactions of multi-generational work units affected outcomes for employees in the department/unit, as well as their performance and productivity outcomes. Additionally, the survey requested information on employees' perceptions of their work experience, work that is done by their work groups, opportunities for learning and development, organizational policies, and their assessments of their health and well-being. Demographic variables included gender, birth year, race/ethnicity, education, marital status, number of children, hourly wage, salary, and household income.

Alienation: An Organizational Societal Comparison, 1972 (ICPSR 7343)

This study collected data from samples of workers drawn in a textile mill, a newspaper, and two commercial printing firms in North Carolina. Three slightly different questionnaires were administered in each organization, questionnaires A (135 respondents) and B (132 respondents) being subsets of the full questionnaire C (122 respondents). The resulting data were organized into one master file from which subsamples according to questionnaire form can be obtained. Variables focused on the respondents' participation in governmental and company decisions and assessed their interest in these areas and feelings of efficacy. Demographic variables include sex, age, race, income, and education.

Americans View Their Mental Health, 1957 (ICPSR 3503)

In 1957, the United States Congress established the Joint Commission on Mental Illness and Health to evaluate the nation's resources for coping with both the psychological and economic problems of mental illness. The Commission sponsored a nationwide survey, which was conducted by the Survey Research Center at the University of Michigan, to assess the subjective mental health of "normal" American adults and to determine in detail how they coped with problems of adjustment. During the spring of 1957, a sample of American adults was interviewed on various areas in which problems might arise, including marriage, parenthood, employment, and general social relationships. Information about leisure time, past and present physical and mental health, and motives for affiliation, achievement, and power were also sought. Three questionnaire forms were employed, each addressed to a randomly selected third of the sample.

This data collection is comprised of responses from two sets of survey questionnaires, the basic Current Population Survey (CPS) and a survey administered as a supplement to the February 2014 basic CPS questionnaire. The supplement, on the topic of public participation in the arts in the United States, was sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts.

The CPS, administered monthly, collects labor force data about the civilian noninstitutional population aged 15 years old or older living in the United States. Moreover, the CPS provides current estimates of the economic status and activities of this population which includes estimates of total employment (both farm and nonfarm), nonfarm self-employed persons, domestics, and unpaid helpers in nonfarm family enterprises, wage and salaried employees, and estimates of total unemployment. The basic CPS data are provided on labor force activity for the week prior to the survey. In addition, CPS provides respondents' demographic characteristics such as age, sex, race, marital status, educational attainment, family relationship, occupation, and industry.

In addition to the basic CPS questions, the February 2014 Annual Arts Basic Survey (AABS) questions were asked of the CPS respondent and spouse as well as another randomly selected household member aged 18 or older and his/her spouse. About one-quarter of the sampled households were asked the supplement questions. Interview numbers 3 and 7 were asked the supplement questions. If the selected person had a spouse or partner then questions were also asked of the spouse/partner. The supplement contained questions about the sampled member's participation in various artistic activities from February 2013 through February 2014. Questions were asked about the use of pottery, ceramics, jewelry, leatherwork, metalwork and woodwork. They were also asked about weaving, crocheting, needlepoint, knitting, sewing, and whether they played a musical instrument. Questions also included doing any acting, singing or dance. Interviews were conducted during the period of February 16-22, 2014. The total sample size of the 2014 AABS was 150,443 Americans, ages 18 and older.

Attitudes and Opinions Toward Education and Work in Chile, 1964 (ICPSR 7054)

This study, conducted in Chile in 1964, included four different samples: Sample A, containing young people 12-14 years of age, Sample B, made up of respondents 16-22 years of age, Sample C, comprising adults, and Sample D, composed of primary and secondary school teachers. The study was undertaken to assess attitudes toward jobs and education in children and young adults, whose future was yet undecided, and in working adults in general and teachers in particular, whose occupations and educations were already established. Variables measured the respondents' highest educational and occupational aspirations in comparison with realistic appraisals of their jobs at the time of the interview and what they might be doing in the future. The study further explored important factors in deciding upon an occupation, as well as the advantages enjoyed by an educated person. Respondents in Samples B, C, and D were asked to evaluate certain goals of the Chilean education system, their desirability, and the degree to which they were fulfilled. These respondents were also asked to rate, on a high-to-low scale, the social prestige of given occupations in Chile. A major portion of the study examined the appeal that various aspects of jobs had for respondents: personal contact with supervisors, fellow workers, and clientele, fixed versus relaxed time schedules, supervision, initiative required, responsibility assumed, intensity of work, physical effort necessary, and variety of duties performed.

This survey is part of a continuing series designed to monitor trends in a wide range of social attitudes in Great Britain. The British Social Attitudes Survey (BSA) is similar to the General Social Survey carried out by the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) in the United States. The BSA questionnaire has two parts, one administered by an interviewer and the other completed by the respondent. The 1993 self-enumerated questionnaire was devoted to a series of questions on a range of social, economic, political, and moral issues. Topics covered (by section) are: (1) government spending, the National Health Service, (2) labor market participation, the workplace, redundancy, employee decision-making, (3) AIDS, the countryside, (4) primary and secondary school education, transportation, the environment, (5) Northern Ireland, the European Community, (6) charitable giving, economic issues and policies (including income and taxation), (7) illegal drugs, social security benefits, child maintenance, (8) sexual relations, (9) housing, (10) religious denomination and attendance, and (11) ethnic origin. Beginning in 1985, an international initiative funded by the Nuffield Foundation, the International Social Survey Program (ISSP), also contributed a module to the BSA. The topic of the ISSP module in this collection was the environment. Additional demographic data included age, education, income, marital status, and religious and political affiliations.

The Candidate Countries Eurobarometer (CCEB) series, first conducted in 2001, gathers information from the countries applying to become members of the European Union (EU) in a way that allows direct comparison with the standard Eurobarometer series carried out in the existing EU countries. The CCEB provides decision-makers and the European public with opinion data on the similarities and differences between the EU and candidate countries. The CCEB continuously tracks support for EU membership in each country and records changes in attitudes related to European issues in the candidate countries. This round of the CCEB survey was conducted between March 1 and April 5, 2002, in the candidate countries: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Turkey. The survey first asked respondents three questions in regard to European Union membership. In addition to these questions, respondents were queried on the following major areas of focus: (1) quality of life indicators and life satisfaction, (2) family and children, (3) elderly people, (4) lifestyle and health , (5) access to and quality of social services, (6) household income and standard of living, (7) social protection, inclusion, and exclusion, (8) social and political participation and integration, (9) employment, unemployment, and quality of work, and (10) regional mobility. For the first major area of focus, quality of life indicators and life satisfaction, respondents were questioned about life satisfaction in the past, present, and near future, and particular factors which contribute to or improve their present quality of life. For the second major area of focus, family and children, respondents provided their views in regard to the ideal number of children for a family, decision-making in having a child, age at birth of first child, parental and family roles, and the role of government in improving life for families with children. For the third major area of focus, elderly people, respondents gave their opinion on who should care for elderly persons, as well as who should pay for their care. The survey also asked respondents whether they cared for an individual who has a long-term illness, or who is handicapped or elderly, in-home or outside the home. For the fourth major area of focus, lifestyle and health, respondents were queried about their current lifestyle and whether they had any long-term illness and/or handicap that limits their activities in any way. For the fifth major area of focus, access to and quality of social services, respondents provided feedback about their distance from a particular service or business, their satisfaction with the health and social services in their country, and whether the local or national government, private companies, or associations should provide certain services. For the sixth major area of focus, household income and standard of living, questions asked of respondents included the lowest net monthly income level their household would need in order to make a living, their appraisal of the current household income situation, whether any household member had difficulties in paying the bills, and their ability to save and invest. The survey also queried respondents about their current standard of living, and whether and how they are improving their standard of living. For the seventh major focus, social protection, inclusion, and exclusion, respondents provided their ideas about necessities of the good life, their opinion as to whether they could rely on anyone outside the home for certain problems, and their views on social exclusion, poverty, and the state of the area in which they live within their country. In addition, the respondents were asked about their response to the poor or socially excluded, which entities provide the most help to these individuals versus who should do so, the reasons why people are poor or socially excluded, as well as the extent of social disparities in their country and government's role in reducing these disparities. For the eighth major area of focus, social and political participation and integration, respondents were asked about their participation in social, community, political, and advocacy groups or organizations. For the ninth major area of focus, employment, unemployment, and quality of work, the survey queried respondents about their current and past employment, employment status, and to describe their job. In addition, respondents identified the average hours they worked per week and stressors arising from their current job situation. For the last major area of focus, regional mobility, respondents were asked about moving in the last ten years, including how often, where, and why or why not, the prospects of moving to a different location in the next five years, the factors that would influence relocation, and whether moving would improve job prospects. In addition, the survey queried respondents about their willingness to live in another European country where the language spoken differs from their native language. Demographic variables include age, gender, marital status, age when stopped full-time education, occupation, income, source of household income, main income earner, number of people living in the household, ownership of durable goods, type and surface of area residence, type of community, and region of residence.

The Candidate Countries Eurobarometer (CCEB) series, first conducted in 2001, gathers information from the countries applying to become members of the European Union (EU) in a way that allows direct comparison with the standard Eurobarometer series carried out in the existing EU countries. The CCEB provides decision-makers and the European public with opinion data on the similarities and differences between the EU and candidate countries. The CCEB continuously tracks support for EU membership in each country and records changes in attitudes related to European issues in the candidate countries. This round of the CCEB survey was conducted between November 20th and December 24th, 2003, in the 13 candidate countries: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Turkey. This survey queried respondents on the following: (1) identities and values, (2) financial services and consumer protection, and (3) time use. For the first major area of focus, identities and values, respondents were asked to define what is most important to them, in addition to their personal values and those values which best represent their country, the EU, the United States, and the Arab world. Respondents provided their opinion on statements pertaining to socio-political issues, selected activities with which they were involved, and determined whether they would be willing to learn an additional foreign language and the main motivation for doing so. In addition, the survey asked respondents to identify which topics they were interested, including politics, economics, arts and culture, music, sports, and lifestyles, and to which countries they felt the closest. For the second major area of focus, financial services, respondents were queried on their top three financial priorities, their thoughts about finances and financial services, and ownership of a financial account, investment, or loan. The survey queried respondents about their use of the phone and the Internet in financial transactions, obtaining a financial account, investment, loan, or other service from the EU in the past, and whether they would consider doing so in the next five years. Additional questions asked respondents about the obstacles which prevent the use of financial services anywhere in the EU, the means of payment used and preferred for an important purchase, their use of an electronic purse, as well as their opinion on the ease of carrying out eight particular activities with the banks and insurance companies, and their expectations about the advice provided by their financial institutions. Finally, respondents were asked about the harmonization of their respective countries' consumer protection standards with the EU's standards. For the third major area of focus, time use, respondents were queried about the number of hours they or their partner spent on paid or voluntary work, child care and household tasks, and attending courses, studying or training. Respondents also answered questions on whether they plan to reduce the number of hours they work, what they intend to do with the extra free time, the preferred duration of the reduction of working hours, and how the reduction in hours would be executed. Respondents provided their opinions on work before retirement, and identified their expected and desired retirement age, work and monetary expectations, and future plans when considering retirement. Answers regarding respondent satisfaction with the hours they spend on life style, health, household, and family related activities were also recorded. The survey also asked respondents about their ability to participate in continuing education, whether they had completed a training course, the number of hours they were involved in for the last course taken, and as to who paid and whether they received time off for the course. In addition, respondents examined the importance and availability of employee benefits at work, whether they had taken any of these benefits in the past 12 months, their satisfaction with these benefits, as well as the ability to partake in employee benefits, and who should pay for these benefits. Respondents identified the activities that had the most impact on their time, their satisfaction with different aspects of life, and expressed their opinion on the importance of making money, working part-time, and stress at work. Finally, the survey queried respondents about whether they worked in the national government or in a state-owned or private company, and the number of children or grandchildren in the household and who takes care of these children. Demographic and other background information includes age, gender, nationality, marital status, age when stopped full-time education and level of education, occupation, whether income was paid by the state, left right political self-placement, vote intention, religious affiliation and participation, household composition, main income earner in household and this person's occupation, household income, type of community, and region of residence.

Career Values in Mexico, 1963 (ICPSR 7058)

This is the second of two studies conducted by the principal investigator concerning career patterns and values in Latin American countries (see also CAREER VALUES IN BRAZIL, 1960 [ICPSR 7042]). The present study was carried out in 1963 in both urban and rural areas of Mexico. The variables assessed the respondents' occupations at the time they were interviewed, the length of their employment, what they liked most and least about their jobs, and their incomes. Further questions explored past occupations, the highest level of education attained, and the extent to which lack of education had handicapped respondents' careers. A major portion of the study probed the respondents' feelings about the nature of jobs and people: the importance of ambition and determination in one's job, individual versus group interests, how best to "get ahead," the importance of family ties, the tendency to trust others, and corruption in urban centers. A number of recodes and derived measures are included. Demographic information covers age, marital status, number of children, religion, and father's occupation.

This special topic poll, fielded June 26-29, 1989, is part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that solicit public opinion on the presidency and on a range of other political and social issues. Respondents were asked about the economic situation in the United States, the future for the next generation of Americans, and their own life satisfaction. Opinions were solicited on relations between the United States and Japan, the trade situation between the United States and Japan, West Germany, and the Soviet Union, the quality of the goods produced in these countries, whether trade restrictions were necessary to protect domestic industries, and which country would be the economic power in the next century. Views were sought on President George H.W. Bush, Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev, how often the federal government could be trusted, and whether corruption was necessary for government to operate. Those polled were asked about government defense spending, the likelihood of a reduction in nuclear weapons within the next few years, the level of United States troops stationed in Western Europe and Asia, and whether the United States would defend West Germany and Japan if these countries were attacked. Other topics addressed attitudes towards work, the environment, abortion, and perceived differences between the United States and Japan. Information was also collected on whether respondents owned a fax machine, used a computer, spoke a language other than English, and had ever visited Japan. Demographic information includes sex, age, race, employment status, education level, household income, political party affiliation, political orientation, and voter registration and voter participation history.

Respondents were asked to give their opinions of President George Bush and his handling of the presidency and foreign policy. The main focus of this data collection was on United States-Japan relations and public attitude toward these relations. Respondents were asked to describe the relationship between United States and Japan, how they viewed the future of the United States-Japan trade, and what they considered the role of world powers might be in this arrangement. This data collection is part of a continuing series of semi-monthly surveys of individuals in Spain. Each survey consists of three sections. The first section collects information on respondents' attitudes regarding personal and national issues. This section includes questions on level of life satisfaction and frequency of relationships, as well as a rating of the importance of national issues. The second section varies according to the monthly topic, with this month's topic focusing on social ethics. Among the issues investigated are the respondent's attitude toward personal/family situations such as marital infidelity, homosexuality, abortion, contraception, pregnancy out of wedlock, and divorce. Also explored are issues relating to ethics in the workplace, such as work habits and degree of dedication to one's job, and issues relating to civic cooperation with the justice system, including attitudes toward minorities, the death penalty, and government corruption. The third section collects demographic data such as sex, age, religion, income, and place of residence.

This data collection is part of a series of nationwide surveys conducted from October 1990 to June 1996 in Spain. The questionnaires for each of these surveys consisted of three sections. The first section collected information on respondents' attitudes regarding personal, national, and international issues, and included questions on respondents' level of life satisfaction and frequency of visits with relatives, neighbors, and friends. The second section contained a topical module of questions that varied from survey to survey, with this survey's topic focusing on orientation toward work. Among the issues investigated were current employment status, sources of support if not employed, techniques used to find employment, provisions made for retirement income, and characteristics of current/last job, such as industry and size of firm, number of hours worked per week during the last month, and total number of years worked. In addition, the survey gauged job satisfaction and attitudes toward work. Questions in the third section of the questionnaire elicited socioeconomic information, such as respondent's sex, age, marital status, size of household, occupation, education, religion, religiosity, place of birth, and income.

Comparative Study on the Organization and Performance of Research Units, 1974 (ICPSR 7547)

This data collection is the result of a cooperative six nation project that was coordinated by the UNESCO secretariat. It contains data collected in six European countries during the first round of an international comparative study of the organization and performance of scientific research units. Drawing from the growing tradition of survey research approaches to the study of management practices in science, in research, and in experimental development, this study provided for a multi-faceted evaluation of scientific productivity and effectiveness at the levels of both the individual scientist and the research unit. The survey was conducted by six participating national research teams that administered five standardized questionnaires, translated into the national languages of the participating countries, to a sample of scientists drawn from nine major fields of science and technology and representing approximately 200 research institutions in each of six countries: Austria, Belgium, Finland, Hungary, Poland, and Sweden. The questionnaires were administered respectively to the head of the research unit, to the administrative officer, to staff scientists, to technical support staff, and to external evaluators. This data collection is an aggregated file of the five respondent levels, using the research unit as the case for analysis. In all, there are 1,222 research units in the sample. The questionnaires incorporated a wide variety of indicators for socio-psychological and sociological factors such as satisfaction with the work environment, ratings of supervisory qualities, perceptions of influence patterns, and the latitude in the choice of research themes. Additionally, the collection includes actual research output of the scientists individually and of the research units as a whole, as well as information on the professional experience of the research workers, the availability and quality of resources, and the extent of communication within and between research units.

NIDA's ultimate goal for CJ-DATS 2 was to identify implementation strategies that maximize the likelihood of sustained delivery of evidence-based practices to improve offender drug abuse and HIV outcomes, and to decrease their risk of incarceration.

The Organizational Process Improvement Intervention (OPII) study (aka Assessment study) focused on implementing assessment and treatment planning processes. Screening and assessment were used to identify substance abuse-related problems and to develop programming to address the problems so identified.

The OPII study engaged corrections and treatment agencies to improve the quality of interagency communication through the effective use of assessment and case planning processes and treatment referrals. Both inter-agency and intra-agency change processes were targeted. A multi-phase implementation protocol was used, wherein agencies engaged in team development, needs assessment, planning, implementation, and sustainability in distinct steps. Early- and delayed-start sites allowed the research team to control for effects of environmental changes within states. The protocol targeted critical communications channels between otherwise often highly segregated correctional and treatment agencies.

Evaluation of the OPII used a multi-site cluster randomized design with multiple measures over the course of the intervention. Clusters consisted of a criminal justice agency and one or more community treatment providers that received referrals from that criminal justice agency. Each of the 9 centers had two clusters (one had three), and each cluster was randomized to an Early-Start or a Delayed-Start condition with multiple measures over the course of the intervention. After randomization, the Early-Start sites began the OPII, while the Delayed-Start sites conducted business as usual, without any additional intervention. After approximately 12 months, or when the Early-Start change team completed the Implementation phase, the Delayed-Start change team began to carry out the protocol.

Throughout the study period different subsets of individuals working at correctional facilities and treatment programs at the study sites were asked to complete surveys. During the Baseline period of the study survey data were collected from correctional staff, correctional directors, treatment staff, treatment directors, correctional executives and treatment executives. These data can be found in (DS1-DS12). The executive respondents provided information at the organizational level for the programs they oversaw (DS5, DS6). Next, Needs Assessments were completed by the change teams and their facilitators (DS13-DS14). The change teams and facilitators also responded to surveys on Process Improvement Planning (DS15-DS19). During the Implementation stage, surveys were administered to select substance abuse treatment programs, change team facilitators, change team members and the immediate supervisors of the change team members (DS20-DS27). Selected correctional and treatment staff members (in the Early-Start sites only) were asked to complete Follow-up surveys at the end of the OPII process (DS28-DS33). Staff members who completed surveys also provided demographic data (DS36-DS41). DS42 is a restricted use version of DS41. Change team members kept track of the time they spent on OPII activities (DS35). Change team success was evaluated by a subset of raters (DS34).

Surveys were administered at 21 study sites and there was a total of over 2,700 survey respondents.

Detroit Area Study, 1956: Orientation on Moral Issues in a Metropolis and The Meaning of Work (ICPSR 7320)

This study of 797 adults in the Detroit metropolitan area provides information on their attitudes toward work and their motivations for working, as well as their orientation toward many social and political issues. The study was a combination of two separate studies: ORIENTATION ON MORAL ISSUES IN A METROPOLIS by Robert Angell, and THE MEANING OF WORK by Robert Kahn and Robert Weiss. Respondents were asked about the importance of work in their life, the things in their job that made them feel important, the things they wanted from their job that it did not provide, the other areas of their life that made them feel useful, and the people in their lives that influenced their choice of occupation. A number of questions that focused on women working outside the home probed respondents' feelings about how a husband was affected by a working wife, and if there were kinds of jobs that women should not have. Other questions probed respondents' views about what the United States should do in the event of an attack by the Soviet Union on a western European country, a parent not allowing a child to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in school, the proposed racial integration of schools, appointment or election of government officials, effecting changes in the United States Constitution, trial by a jury or a judge, ways to effect world peace, the most important problem for the United States in the future, and a Communist revolution in a Latin American country. Additional items explored respondents' opinion of the Detroit newspapers and the Detroit newspaper strike, and their satisfaction with their neighborhood. Respondents were also asked about their political party preference, as well as their use and ownership of telephones. Demographic variables specify age, sex, race, education, place of birth, marital status, number of children, nationality, religious preferences, occupation, family income, length of residence in the Detroit area, home ownership, length of time at present residence, and class identification.

Respondents were asked about their belief in God and in life after death, the effects of their religious beliefs on their political beliefs, and the kinds of issues religious leaders should take a public stand on. Several questions probed respondents' views of other religious groups, as well as their attitudes on such issues as gambling, birth control, and the use of alcohol. This survey focused on factors that influence social change in the Michigan tri-county area of Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne counties and the changes that have occurred over time with respect to different ethnic groups and women. Respondents' opinions were sought on issues such as job discrimination, including pay and promotion on the basis of race, ethnicity, or gender, factors that influence employers in hiring decisions, such as experience in line of work, formal education, references, looks and appearance, age, race, and gender, possible reasons for Blacks' having worse jobs, income, and housing than Whites, and factors that affect this situation, such as racial discrimination, perceived inferior ability, lack of educational opportunities, and lack of motivation on the part of Blacks. The survey also elicited respondents' views on factors influencing residential segregation, including the lack of affordable housing for African Americans and other ethnic minorities and the lack of Whites' acceptance of these ethnic minority groups in White neighborhoods. Other variables probed respondents' attitudes toward interracial marriage, segregated and desegregated schools, all-Black male and all-Black female public schools, nonviolent and violent means of social change among Blacks, government legislative measures such as the cut in welfare cost, parental approval for under-age abortion, the amount of federal taxes paid, and affirmative action for women and African Americans in job training, education, hiring, and promotion. Also explored were respondents' feelings about the quality of city and neighborhood services, public schools, crime, and the desirability of living in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties and some of the suburbs around Detroit. This survey focused on the influence of education on respondents' attitudes toward a variety of issues, including crime, city services, police protection, neighborhoods, health-care coverage, taxes, public schools, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and government involvement in correcting class, gender, and race disparities. The survey also sought respondents' opinions on issues such as race relations, discrimination against women, racial balance in schools, laws against interracial marriages, housing discrimination law, racial profiling, and voting for a Black presidential candidate. This survey explored the ways in which social influences, such as stress and racism, affected health, and the impact these influences had on the respondents' outlook on life. Respondents were questioned about their health status and their exercise, smoking, sleeping, and dieting habits, as well as about diagnosed health problems and depression and their effects on daily activities. Respondents were also asked a series of questions regarding their employment status, type of job and whether it was a supervisory position, the racial makeup of their workgroup, their perceptions of their position and job, the likelihood of their finding another job, hassles experienced while at work, and whether they had any trouble balancing family and work. Another series of questions asked respondents whether they had been a victim of a serious physical attack or assault, robbery, or home burglary, if they had ever been unfairly searched, stopped, or questioned by police, why they felt they had been treated this way, and if they felt they had ever been treated unfairly by a teacher, landlord, or neighbor. Opinions were also solicited on the respondents' experience with depression and anxiety. Respondents were asked whether they felt it was possible to reach their goals, how satisfied they were with their present situation, how often they felt depressed and how long this feeling lasted, whether they lost weight or sleep due to this feeling, how this feeling of depression made them view themselves, how often and how long they were worried about things that were not likely to happen, how often they worried about non-serious things, and how they felt physically when they were anxious or depressed. Another set of questions queried respondents on alcohol and drug use. Respondents were asked how often they drank alcohol, the most they had to drink at one time, whether they had experienced any addiction to alcohol or experienced any emotional or psychological problems associated with drinking, whether they had any problem controlling their drinking, whether they had used drugs outside of a doctor's order, what types of drugs they had used, how often and in what type of situations they had used these drugs, and whether they had any addiction to the drugs. Respondents were also asked whether they had a regular doctor, whether they went to a doctor's office or clinic to seek medical attention, the last time they had gone for a checkup, how they were treated by staff at the visit, whether they trusted their doctor, the reasons why they did or did not receive medical attention, and whether they had health insurance. Respondents were also asked for their perceptions of differences between Blacks and whites, attitudes toward affirmative action with regard to employment, and their attitude toward interracial relationships. Another battery of questions queried respondents on any fears or phobias they had, such as a fear of animals, water, or visiting a doctor or dentist. Questions focused on the severity of these fears, how long they had had these fears, and how much these fears interfered in daily activities. A final set of questions gathered demographic information on respondents such as highest level of education completed, political affiliation, religious affiliation, level of religious participation, importance of religion, birth date, whether they owned their own home or rented, how much they spent on food each week, total family income for the year 1994, and the height and weight of respondents.

This data collection contains two separate data files, both of which are the results of the systematic evaluation of job worth performed by the Committee on Occupational Classification and Analysis of the National Academy of Sciences. The Committee acquired a selection of variables from the April 1971 Current Population Survey (CPS) that were gathered from a sample of households which yielded 60,441 workers in the experienced civilian labor force. The CPS survey provided detailed information about the workers and their family backgrounds, education, and employment. Part 1 contains that data augmented with Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT) characteristics, e.g., job classification and description, for each worker in the survey. Part 2 of this data collection is a file created by the Committee containing aggregate DOT characteristics (based on the DOT, Fourth Edition) for the 574 expanded occupation categories of the 1970 United States Census. The motivation for aggregating DOT characteristics (which exist as scores for each of 12,099 occupations) into 1970 United States Census codes was to allow researchers to relate the characteristics of occupations from the DOT to the characteristics of the individuals in those occupations gathered from the Census and survey data. The file's data -- the aggregated scores for all the workers in each of the 574 occupational categories -- are based on a variety of criteria, e.g., Specific Vocational Preparation (SVP), aptitudes, interest factors, preferences, physical demands, environmental conditions, and General Educational Development (GED).

There is a growing body of empirical evidence to suggest (1) that correctional officers are exposed through their work to a number of stressors and, as a result, have a higher level of job-related stress than is found in other occupations, and (2) that stress has a variety of debilitating effects on the medical, behavioral, attitudinal, and emotional well-being of correctional officers. In light of these consistent conclusions, it is important that research extend the current state of knowledge by addressing other important empirical questions. One is the question of how correctional officer stress levels affect the well-being of the officer, as measured in terms of potential (1) attitudinal, (2) emotional and (3) behavioral effects on the officer. A second question is the extent to which correctional officer stress levels affect the well-being of the prison organization. Research in non-correctional settings finds that increased levels of a worker's stress are significantly related to three dimensions of that worker's behaviors in the organization: (1) task performance, (2) organizational citizenship behaviors, and (3) counterproductive work behaviors. A third question explored is the degree to which the individual-level effects of stress mediate the organizational-level effects of stress. Finally, a fourth question to be explored is the extent to which officer stress levels are correlated with, and can be predicted by, data routinely collected by the state department of corrections, such as performance evaluations, workplace injuries, overtime, grievances, and incident reports.

This round of Eurobarometer surveys, which diverged from the standard Eurobarometer topics, queried respondents on their working conditions. Respondents provided general information about their jobs, including occupation, type of contract, years/months in job, wages, hours worked weekly, number of people working under their supervision, and length of commute, as well as size and business activity of the company where they worked. Specific questions about the work environment concerned the amount of exposure to vibrations, noise, high and low temperatures, fumes or other dangerous substances, and radiation. Respondents were also asked whether their jobs involved painful or tiring positions, carrying heavy loads, short repetitive tasks, repetitive hand or arm movements, high speed activity, tight deadlines, computer work, wearing protective equipment, working with non-employees, and working at home, at nights, and on weekends. In addition, respondents were asked if their health and safety were at risk at work, how well informed they were about job risks, and in what ways their work directly affected their health. They also provided information on how many times over the last year they were absent at work because of health problems caused by their jobs. Information was gathered on workers' control of their tasks, including the pace of their work, if their work was dependent on other colleagues or machinery, if they were able to determine the order or methods of their work, and whether their work involved complex or monotonous tasks. Other questions focused on work-related discussions with their boss, colleagues, and employee representatives, and occurrences of personal discrimination, intimidation, or physical violence. Respondents also provided information about training, job satisfaction, and the availability of leave time. Demographic data collected on respondents include gender, age, nationality, marital status, occupation, age at completion of education, number of people in household, number of children under 15 in household, and subjective size of community.

This round of Eurobarometer surveys diverged from a focus on standard Eurobarometer measures, and instead assessed respondents' views on the perceived impact of new technologies, employment, moving, and issues related to people with disabilities. Interviews began by asking respondents if they felt important changes in the world were impacting them personally, how they felt about these changes, and what the impact of new technologies would be over the next five to ten years in terms of their daily lives, access to information, free time, feelings of security, risk of accidents, household chores, family and social relationships, and deterrence of criminal activities. They were asked how much they agreed that new technologies would reduce income inequalities, differences in educational and cultural opportunities, and the number of people excluded from society, as well as improve people's participation in the political process, create more possibilities for expressing one's opinions, provide more access to political representatives and the civil service via the Internet, and promote on-line voting for elections and referenda. Responses were also sought regarding who respondents felt benefited most from the Internet, if they had concerns about voting on-line, and who should deal with new ethical issues brought about by new technologies. Respondents were further questioned about whether they thought that over the next five to ten years people in general would undertake more or less work-related training, experience more or less work-related stress, change jobs more or less than today, work more or less hours per week, retire earlier or later, and what impact new technologies would have on employment opportunities. They were asked to what extent they agreed that it was necessary to master new technologies to find or keep a job, that the educational system taught new technology effectively, and that all pupils should have full access to new technologies, as well as who they thought should pay for work-related training on new technologies. Respondents with a job were asked how satisfied they were with their job in terms of earnings, job security, type of work, number of working hours, start and end times, length of travel time, how many times they had changed jobs in the last five years, how similar the skills required for their current job were to their previous job, and the reason for changing jobs. Those who thought they would change jobs in the next five years were asked if they thought the required skills would be similar or different and what would encourage them to make the change. Those who hadn't changed jobs in the last five years or didn't plan to change jobs in the next five years were asked why. All respondents with a job were also asked if they thought they would need new skills to improve future job prospects, if in the last year they had participated in training to improve their skills, and why they wanted or didn't want to improve their job skills. Respondents were next asked if they had moved in the last ten years or if they intended to move in the next five years. Those who had moved or intended to move were asked where, i.e., within the same city, different city-same region, different region-same country, different European Union (EU) country, or outside of the EU, and the reason for the move. Those not having moved and not intending to move were asked why not. All respondents were asked whether they would prefer to remain in their current region of residence or move to another region if they were unemployed, to what extent moving to a different geographical location in the next five years would improve their job prospects, if they would be willing to live in another EU country with a different language, how they felt about the number of foreigners in their country, and whether better career prospects, financial circumstances, social benefits, public services, or social life would encourage them to move. On the subject of the disabled, respondents were asked if they personally knew anyone (including a family member, friend, acquaintance, neighbor, colleague, client, pupil/student, or other) with a disability or infirmity that limited their activities, how at ease they felt in the presence of people with disabilities, and how at ease people in general felt in the presence of people with disabilities. They were asked how difficult they thought it was for certain groups of people with disabilities (i.e., blind, deaf, physically and intellectually disabled people) to access public transport and services, restaurants, university or school, their work place, sports events, and cultural events, whether access to public places for people with disabilities had improved over the last ten years, who was actually responsible for making improvements in these matters (e.g., local authorities, national government, nongovernmental organizations, the EU, etc.), and who should be responsible. They were asked to indicate how aware they were of each of 21 types of disabilities (e.g., visual, hearing, neuromuscular, skeletal, arthritis, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and others), what percent of the population in their country had a physical disability, how strongly they agreed that disabled persons should be more involved in society, that more money should be spent on removing physical barriers, and that children with disabilities should be taught in the same schools as other children, and whether they would feel at ease with a person in a wheelchair as their boss, next-door neighbor, colleague, a politician, an artist, a teacher, or a shop worker. Standard demographic information collected includes age, sex, occupation, nationality, marital status, vote intention, age at completion of full-time education, number of people in household, number of children under 15 in household, household income, size of locality, region of residence, religiousity, and language of interview (for select countries).

This round of Eurobarometer surveys diverged from standard questions instead it focused on the social exclusion and modernization of pension systems in European Union countries. Respondents were asked why people were socially excluded, what the role of government should be in reducing the risk of poverty and social exclusion, how satisfied they were with their lives, whether there were people in their neighborhoods who lived in poverty, and what it meant to live properly. They were also asked whether they had financial problems, and if so, for how long and what had caused them. A number of questions focused on problems related to work. Respondents were asked whether they had been unemployed in the last five years and if so for how long. Those employed or self-employed were asked questions concerning job satisfaction, the type of organization for which they worked, the number of hours worked, their job title, number of people employed at their workplace, how long they had been continuously employed, and what they took into consideration when choosing a job. They were also asked whether their job was interesting and secure, whether they had to work hard and under pressure, whether their employers paid for training or education, whether they had friends at work, and whether they had influence over the decision-making processes at their workplace and in deciding how to do their tasks. They also compared different aspects of their current job with what they had been doing five years ago, described relations between management and employees, and commented on how their work affected their health and their lives after work. Another major focus of the surveys was the pension system. Those who had already retired were asked at what age they had retired, what the main source of their retirement income was, whether their current financial situation was better than before retirement and what it would look like in five to ten years, and whether the state pension allowed them to get by easily. Non-pensioners supplied information about when they intended to retire, what their main source of income would be after retirement, what percentage of their current household's total income after tax they considered sufficient in retirement, and how they were saving for their retirement. Additionally, respondents were asked what a good pension system should look like, how the pension should be provided, what level of minimum guaranteed income should be provided for elderly people, whether older workers should be forced to retire at a fixed age, whether men and women should be treated equally in terms of the retirement system, and how retirement problems caused by an aging society should be resolved. Demographic and other background information collected includes respondent's age, gender, nationality, marital status, left-right political self-placement, occupation, age at completion of education, trade union membership, household income, type and size of locality, and region of residence.

This round of Eurobarometer surveys sought public opinion on issues of time usage and product safety instructions. Respondents were asked about their current employment status and occupation, matters pertaining to work arrangements and leave options such as teleworking, work schedule flexibility, and taking sabbaticals, as well as activities that have an impact on their free time. Respondents were asked about their satisfaction with respect to various aspects of life including their job, health, and financial situation. Respondents were queried on the number of hours they worked per week, whether or not they intended to reduce their working hours and for how long, and what they would do with their extra free time. Respondents were also asked for their opinions about stress levels at work, compensation, working conditions, and job security. They were also asked at what age they would like to retire and at what age they expected to retire, whether they would consider postponing retirement for any reason, and what they would do with their extra time upon retiring. Other questions were asked about professional training completed by the respondents in the previous 12 months, whether they took time off of work to complete the training, who should be responsible for paying for such training and about their attitudes towards lifelong learning. Respondents were asked how many children under the age of 14 were living in their household and if the children's grandparents ever looked after them and with what frequency. In addition, respondents with grandchildren were asked if they ever looked after their grandchildren and whether or not they did so on a regular basis. Respondents also were asked a series of questions regarding product safety information with respect to 'Do-it-yourself' (DIY) products. Respondents were shown different logos that had appeared on DIY products and were asked if they were familiar with the various logos and if they knew what the logos said about the product. Respondents were asked if they took safety logos or other safety information into account when purchasing DIY products, whether or not they read instructions accompanying DIY products, whether they kept instructions for future use, where they thought the best location for instructions would be, whether they preferred safety instructions to be conveyed by logos or text, and whether or not safety information for DIY products was generally useful. Similarly, they were asked about product safety information regarding toys and other products for children. Respondents were also asked whether they took safety information into account when buying toys or children's products, whether they read safety instructions, and whether they kept safety instructions for future reference. Further, they were asked if they had seen certain logos on toys or other products for children and whether they knew what the logos said about the products. Respondents' opinions were sought regarding the most effective placement of safety instructions, whether they preferred the risks of using a toy or children's product to be indicated by logos or symbols or by text, and the usefulness of warnings appearing in text form. Finally, respondents were asked to make judgments on the overall usefulness of safety information for toys and children's products. Demographic and other background information collected includes respondent age, gender, marital status, nationality, left-right political self-placement, age at completion of education, occupation, household income group, type and size of locality, and region of residence.

This round of Eurobarometer surveys diverged from the Standard Eurobarometer measures and queried respondents on the following major areas of focus: (1) social reality, (2) e-communications, (3) Common Agricultural Policy, (4) discrimination and the media, and (5) medical research. For the first area of focus, a sequence of questions covered a broad spectrum in terms of social reality, asking the respondents to evaluate their life and job satisfaction, work environment, confidence in their job skills, ability to keep or find a job, and what they expected would happen to their jobs in the near future, e.g., promotion, job loss, relocation, and pensions. Respondents were then asked their opinions on the effectiveness of social welfare, which social issues they considered most important, whether they had or wanted children, how the presence of minority groups affect their countries in a cultural and economic sense, and what necessities are required in order to get ahead in life. The second major focus called for respondents to provide information on the availability, or lack there of, of each of these communication systems: television, fixed telephone, mobile phones, and Internet in their household. Respondents were asked to share reasons why they owned or did not own certain systems, including telecommunication bundles, and to explain how accessible the systems were to their household. Respondents also were asked to assess the performance of each system, to share their expectations as consumers, and to rate the effectiveness of their service providers and the available features (e.g., personal data protection, costs, tariffs, and flexibility with account changes). Respondents indicated, from lists of service providers included in the survey, the specific provider they used for each communication system they used. Respondents answered additional questions about viruses and spam, and how they dealt with such issues, as well as their knowledge of the phone numbers to contact in case of emergencies. Only one question was asked in the next topic as respondents were shown a European label and asked what it symbolized. For the third major area of focus, the survey asked respondents about their knowledge of and their interest in learning about the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Respondents also were asked their opinions on the importance of agriculture and rural development in their countries, what the European Union's (EU) main priorities should be in terms of CAP, and the effectiveness of its role in policy development. Respondents were further asked if the EU's reduction of the subsidy for farmers was justified if farmers failed to attend to their responsibilities and rules of policy, and whether the current amount of budgeting for agriculture was adequate. The fourth major topic focused on people's opinions about discrimination and the media. Respondents were requested to assess the importance of the media's role in combating discrimination and the particular actions the media may use to do this. The survey further asked respondents how they felt about viewing people of different ethnic origins on television, and the media's use of ethnic origin or religious affiliation when discussing people. Also, respondents shared whether they believed the media contributed to the creation of ethnic tensions between different communities. For the fifth and final topic, the survey queried respondents about their knowledge of and interest in scientific research, their access to information on science and subjects of interest (e.g., exhibitions, lectures, professors, doctors, family, and periodicals), and whether they were aware of the projects funded by the EU. Demographic and other background information include respondent's age, gender, nationality, origin of birth (personal and parental), marital status, left-to-right political self-placement, occupation, age when stopped full-time education, household composition, and ownership of a fixed or a mobile telephone and other durable goods. This round of Eurobarometer surveys diverged from the Standard Eurobarometer measure and queried respondents on (1) health, long term care, and the dependent elderly (2) undeclared work, (3) the European Union's (EU) relationship with neighboring countries, and development aid, and (4) euro coins. For the first special topic, respondents were asked to assess their health status, life expectancy, whether they have significant impairment in participating in certain activities of daily living, and their experience with health care services, including access and cost. In addition, respondents were asked to identify persons in need of long term care, to provide their opinion and experiences in the planning and provision of long term care for the elderly, including the health care costs, and to evaluate the risk that dependent elders are being exposed to abuse and need for future personal care requirements. The second special topic, undeclared work, respondents were asked to identify their knowledge of persons who work without declaring income to tax or social security institutions, and the characteristics and reasons of those who would most likely do so. Respondents also evaluated the risk of being detected in not declaring income for which supplementary bills or fines may be issued, and sanctions expected to be implemented by authorities in response to a certain amount of income that is undeclared. The survey also queried respondents about services and goods acquired from an individual or group associated with undeclared work, and undeclared payment received from their employer and portion of gross yearly income this comprises, and their opinion about these practices. In addition, respondents identified the type and frequency of undeclared work in which they participated, amount of income received for this work, and the reasons this work was completed and for whom, and consequences in working undeclared. In addition, respondents assessed the legitimacy of certain behaviors pertaining to public and private economic transactions. As the next special topic, the survey examines respondents' knowledge of which countries currently plan to join the EU, which countries neighbor the EU, the European Neighborhood policy, and obtaining information about developmental aid. Pertaining to this policy, respondents were asked to assess the relationship between the EU and neighboring countries, and the importance of issues which would affect this relationship, including providing economic assistance. Respondents provided their opinion in regard to developmental aid the EU provides to the poor, the efficiency of providing aid through each member state or the European Commission, which donor provides the most aid to developing countries, and priorities for the EU in disbursing developmental aid. For the final special topic, respondents were asked about their knowledge of the sides of euro coins, to identify the genuineness and value of particular coins, to describe their experiences in accepting a fake, or a non-euro coin or coin-like object, and their opinion in regard to the national sides of the coins which differ among each country in the EU. Demographic and other background information includes respondent's age, estimate of life expectancy, gender, nationality, origin of birth (personal and parental), marital status, left-to-right political self-placement, occupation, age when stopped full-time education, household composition, ownership of a fixed or a mobile telephone and other durable goods, type and size of locality, region of residence, and language of interview (select countries). This round of Euro-Barometer surveys queried respondents on standard Euro-Barometer measures, such as how satisfied they were with their present life, whether they attempted to persuade others close to them to share their views on subjects they held strong opinions about, whether they discussed political matters, what their country's goals should be for the next ten years, and how they viewed the need for societal change. Additional questions focused on the respondents' knowledge of and opinions on the European Community (EC), including how well-informed they felt about the EC, what sources of information about the EC they used, whether their country had benefited from being an EC member, and the extent of their personal interest in EC matters. Another major focus of the surveys was men's and women's work roles in Europe. A number of questions were asked about satisfaction with work and feelings about retirement. The satisfaction of housewives with their work and their possible desire for work outside the home was also explored. Other questions probed the respondents' feelings about men helping with housework and the role of women as active participants in politics. Another major focus of the surveys was attitudes toward the forthcoming European Parliamentary elections. Demographic information for each respondent includes education, occupation, organizational memberships and activities, marital status, age, and sex, as well as occupation of head of household, and composition of household. In addition to the survey itself, the ICPSR version of the study contains constructed indices on materialist/post-materialist values, left-right partisan vote, and cognitive mobilization (an indicator of an individual's potential to take an active role in the political process). Euro-Barometer 8 contains data gathered from representative samples of respondents aged 15 or older interviewed in each of the nine nations of the EC (Germany, Great Britain, Denmark, Italy, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland, and the Netherlands) in November 1977.

A precursor to the Eurobarometer studies, this survey queried respondents on some of what would become standard Eurobarometer measures, such as how satisfied they were with their present lives, whether they attempted to persuade others close to them to share their views on subjects they held strong opinions about, whether they discussed political matters, what their country's goals should be for the next ten years, and how they viewed the need for societal change. Additional questions focused on the respondents' knowledge of and opinions on the European Community (EC), including how well-informed they felt about the EC, what sources of information about the EC they used, whether their country had benefited from being an EC member, and the extent of their personal interest in EC matters. Respondents were also asked which party they supported and to place themselves on a left-right ideological scale. Demographic information on religion, age, occupation, sex, marital status, education, size of community, income, and number of persons in household was also gathered. In addition to the survey itself, the ICPSR version of the study contains three constructed indices. Two of these indices place respondents along a materialist/postmaterialist values continuum and the other categorizes respondents' political ideology according to their party preferences. This study contains information gathered from samples of respondents aged 15 or older interviewed in each of the nine nations of the newly expanded European Community in September-October 1973. The same questionnaire was administered to a total of 13,484 respondents: 1,957 from Germany, 1,933 from Great Britain, 1,199 from Denmark, 1,909 from Italy, 2,227 from France, 1,266 from Belgium, 330 from Luxembourg, 1,199 from Ireland, and 1,464 from the Netherlands.

Funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and The Atlantic Philanthropies, Better Jobs Better Care (BJBC) was a demonstration program that sought to bring about changes in public policy and management practice that would lead to improved recruitment and retention of high-quality paraprofessional direct care workers (DCW) in nursing homes as well as in home- and community-based settings. This was to be accomplished by implementing both policy and management practice goals. Policy goals included developing initiatives related to wages and benefits, incentives for job redesign, curriculum and credentialing, professional associations, and promotion of public awareness and policies. Practice goals involved interventions related to caregiving skill development, peer mentoring, team building, top management training, supervisor training, and provider-specific interventions. The program established demonstration projects in Iowa, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Vermont which enrolled long-term care establishments across the spectrum of long-term care settings: skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, home care agencies, and adult day service providers.

Conducted as part of the BJBC evaluation, which used a before-after design to assess the implementation of the interventions and their impact, this survey of the top clinical manager at each participating long-term care provider explored the establishments' organizational characteristics and management practices. One version of the survey was administered at the beginning of the demonstration (Time1), and a second version, toward the end of the demonstration (Time 2). Organizational characteristics covered by the survey include nonprofit/for-profit status, whether the establishment was free standing or part of a chain, number of competing establishments, whether the DCWs were unionized, and the type and amount of services provided. Management practices investigated by the survey include participation in care planning, communication about tasks, feedback, DCW training, management communication, organizational readiness for change, professional development, and work design practices. The survey also collected information about the racial and Hispanic origin composition of DCWs and patients/residents/clients.

Conducted as part of the BJBC evaluation, this survey interviewed DCWs at two points during the demonstration. The Time 1 interview was fielded as soon as establishments enrolled in the demonstration and provided a list of their DCWs (July 2004 to December 2006), and the Time 2 interviews were completed 12 to 28 months after the Time 1 interviews (April 2006 to June 2007). Both rounds of the survey used the same self-administered questionnaire which included questions about length of employment, job satisfaction, job rewards and problems, supervision, perceptions of quality of care, job confidence, training, intent to quit, and demographic characteristics. The survey also elicited recommendations for improving DCWs' jobs by asking the open-ended question "What is the single most important thing your employer could do to improve your job as a direct care worker?"

In long-term care, frontline supervisors play a central role in direct care workers' (DCW) job quality and turnover and are critical to the implementation of management changes. To better understand supervisors' perceptions of management practices, the quality of supervision, and the effect on DCW turnover and job quality, the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation in the United States Department of Health and Human Services contracted with Pennsylvania State University to conduct this survey of supervisors participating in the Better Jobs, Better Care (BJBC) demonstration. Funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and The Atlantic Philanthropies, the BJBC demonstration -- which took place in Iowa, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Vermont -- tested innovative policy and practice models designed to improve the quality of DCW jobs in an effort to improve recruitment and retention of these workers and strengthen capacity to meet future demand for long-term care.

Frontline supervisors were interviewed from the four types of facilities and agencies that participated in the demonstration: skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, home care agencies, and adult day service providers. The survey explored the supervisors' job responsibilities, formal training, job satisfaction, and thoughts about quitting. It investigated the culture of the organizations in which the supervisors worked, probed for problems with the supervisors' jobs, assessed how rewarding the supervisors felt their jobs were, inquired as to whether the supervisors felt respected by their clients, DCWs, and managers, gauged the supervisors' assessments of the overall competency level of the DCWs in their organizations, and explored the supervisors' beliefs about managerial support for the BJBC project, how well the BJBC programs were executed, and whether the overall impact of the project was positive.

In addition, the respondents were queried about management practices (e.g., rotation of assignments to different services or units, mechanisms to handle employee concerns, and approaches used to handle poor performance or negative behaviors among employees). They were also asked about DCW training, mentoring, and career ladder programs, DCW participation in patient/resident/client care plans, and communication among DCWs and between DCWs and their supervisors. Respondents were also asked what was the most important thing that their employer could do both to improve the jobs of DCWs and to improve their own ability to do their jobs as supervisors of DCWs. Additional information collected by the survey includes the supervisors' age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, educational attainment, nursing degree or license (LPN, RN, Diploma RN, BSN, MSN, or Advanced Practice Nurse), wages, and health insurance coverage.

This collection comprises three data files: (1) Supervisor Identification Instrument Data, (2) Supervisor Survey Data, and (3) Clinical Managers Who Are Also Supervisors Data. The first file contains information collected by the Supervisor Identification Instrument that was submitted to the clinical manager at each BJBC provider organization. This instrument instructed clinical managers to name all of the supervisors in their organization and to indicate which supervisory responsibilities each one performed. The second data file contains the responses to the Supervisor Survey questionnaire.The third data file contains the responses of clinical managers who also functioned as supervisors in their organization. These clinical managers responded to the same questions in the Supervisor Survey questionnaire, except for ten questions that were worded somewhat differently.

This data collection contains information gathered in a longitudinal survey of a national sample of adults who were high school sophomores in 1955 and who participated in a 1970 follow-up survey. The 1970 study was designed to explore the determinants and long-range consequences of individual mobility in the United States. In 1955, in 42 public high schools across the nation, 4,151 sophomores were given aptitude and career goals questionnaires by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). In 1970, the University of North Carolina's Institute for Research in Social Science (IRSS) attempted to contact the sample with mailback questionnaires. There were 2,077 usable responses. The sophomore sample approximated a representative national sample of its age cohort, with the following exceptions: (1) students attending predominantly non-white institutions were excluded, (2) private schools were excluded, (3) large-city schools tended to be under-represented, and (4) low-ability students and school dropouts tended to be under-represented. The mailed questionnaires included items concerning personal data and activities, high school and college experience (e.g., reasons for dropping out of high school, motivating factors for attending college, and number of high school friends who attended college), work experience (e.g., job history, hours worked, types of occupations, and work attitudes), family background and marriage (e.g., ethnicity, religion reared in, and highest level of education attained by immediate family members), and finances (e.g., financial obligations, income, and assets), as well as a wide range of questions on attitude and esteem (e.g., current feelings about hometown, present community, high school, and college). Women were asked additional questions concerning contraception, pregnancy, family size, and attitudes toward women's roles and work.

This data collection contains the results of two surveys administered in 1979 and 1980 to gather information on United States federal employee attitudes and perceptions of federal personnel management practices and working conditions. Conducted as part of the evaluation of the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978, these surveys are based on government-wide samples of employees. Respondents in each of the studies completed a self-administered questionnaire. Part 1 includes information gathered in the 1979 survey, such as personal and employment background, current position, job and pay rate satisfaction, work relationships with other employees and supervisors, work group performance, attitudes about the agency's organizational culture, and perceived promotional opportunities. Part 2 contains the results of the 1980 survey, which was administered to a sample of senior federal employees. The type of data gathered is similar to that in Part 1, with additional information concerning respondents' attitudes about the Senior Executive Service (SES), labor/management relations, and job performance incentives.

As in 1972 and 1973, the 1974 interview includes items selected by the NORC staff and an advisory panel of sociologists as "mainstream" interests of academic sociology. In addition to standard personal data items, the 1974 survey covers such areas of interest as the family, socio-economic status, social mobility, and morale. About two-thirds of the questionnaire probed for attitudes and opinions concerning qualities of a job, satisfaction with life, roles of women, birth control and abortion, sex relations, race relations, social control issues, and civil liberties. The data were collected by the National Opinion Research Center as the third in a five-year series of general social surveys. The survey was administered in March 1974 to a national cross-section sample of adults 18 years of age or older. The data was obtained from the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research.

As part of a program of crossnational research, a collaboration took place in 1982 between the United States General Social Survey (GSS) and the Zentrum fur Umfragen, Methoden und Analysen (ZUMA) of the Federal Republic of Germany. Funded by the National Science Foundation, this data collection effort explored attitudinal similarities and differences between the two countries on a range of social issues. A common set of questions was included in both the 1982 GSS and the German Social Survey (ALLBUS). These common items included questions on job values, abortion, and subjective social class. The 1982 ALLBUS also contained several GSS items that were not contained in the 1982 GSS, but had been used in other years. Of the 4,497 total cases in the file, the General Social Survey portion contains 1,506 cases and the German Social Survey portion has 2,991 cases.

Formed in 1983, the group develops topical modules dealing with important areas of social science as supplements to regular national surveys. The International Social Survey Program (ISSP) is an ongoing program of crossnational collaboration. Formed in 1983, the group develops topical modules dealing with important areas of social science as supplements to regular national surveys. This survey is the second in a series exploring the "work orientations" topic. The first survey on this topic was conducted in 1989. Participating countries in the present survey include Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Canada, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. As in 1989, the module focused on the areas of general attitudes toward work and leisure, work organization, and work content. Opinions were elicited on issues such as respondent preferences for more work or more leisure time, the value of work in general, and how important factors such as job security, high income, opportunities for advancement, job interest, independence, and value to others were to the respondent. Other questions focused on what factors should determine how to pay two people doing the same kind of work, the effects the introduction of new technologies (computers, robots, etc.) would have on the workplace, attitudes about self-employment, size of the workplace, public vs. private sector employment, and full-time vs. part-time work. Respondents were also asked how easy or difficult it would be to find an acceptable job, how they felt about their present job, and how they viewed their working conditions (e.g., if they came home exhausted from work, amount of stress and possible danger on the job, working hours, place of work, whether their status was temporary or permanent, how their present job made use of their skills, and how they acquired these skills). Additional questions elicited information on relations in the workplace between management and employees and between workmates, how satisfied respondents were with their job, how they felt about their organization, how many days they had been absent (excluding vacation) from work in the last six months, how likely it was that they would try to find a new job within the next twelve months, and how much they worried about the possibility of losing their job. A special group of questions focused on respondents who were not currently employed. Demographic variables include age, sex, education, marital status, personal and family income, employment status, household size and composition, occupation, religion and church attendance, social class, union membership, political party, voting history, size of community, region, and ethnicity.

Japanese General Social Survey (JGSS), 2005 (ICPSR 4703)

This survey was designed to solicit political, sociological, and economic information from people living in Japan. The data were collected between August 25 and November 23, 2005, using face-to-face interviews and self-administered questionnaires. Respondents were asked to give employment information for themselves and their spouses, including industry, size of employer, number of hours worked, level of job satisfaction, and time spent commuting. Respondents were also queried regarding employment information and education level of their parents when the respondent was aged 15. Several questions were asked about household composition, the type of residence, the state of respondents' finances during the last few years and compared to other Japanese families both past and present, sources of financial support, the ease of improving one's standard of living in Japan, and the use of credit cards and consumer financing. Views were also sought on divorce, the roles of each spouse, issues involving children, the responsibility of the government, and taxation issues. In terms of health, questions were asked regarding the physical and mental health of respondents and their household members, the frequency of smoking and alcohol consumption, and their views on genetically modified foods. Quality of life questions addressed the amount of satisfaction respondents received from life, and how often they participated in sports, leisure, and volunteer activities. Additional topics covered were euthanasia, the use of technology, juvenile delinquency, car ownership and usage, their level of trust in various institutions, and whether respondents belonged to religious, trade, or social service organizations. Demographic variables include age, sex, education level, employment status, occupation, labor union membership, marital status, type of residential area (e.g., urban or rural), household income, perceived social status, political orientation, political party affiliation, and religious affiliation.

The Japanese General Social Surveys (JGSS) Project is a Japanese version of the General Social Survey (GSS) project closely replicating the original GSS of the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. It provides data for analyses of Japanese society, attitudes and behaviors which make international comparisons possible. The objectives of the JGSS project are three-fold: (1) to collect and build cumulative data on general social surveys in Japan in a regular and consistent manner, thus enabling a time-series analysis; (2) to provide data for secondary analyses to researchers and university students in various social science fields; and (3) to provide data in a format useful for international comparative studies, research, and reports.

Job Satisfaction in the House of Representatives, 1999, reflects data collected from a mail survey of former members of the House of Representatives conducted in the Summer of 1999. The survey was funded by a grant from the Dirksen Congressional Center and the Caterpiller Foundation.

The collection includes data about former members who left congress between 1970 and 1999; of the 401 former members who were sent surveys 228 responded for a response rate of about 57%. The respondents were surveyed about reasons why they left congress, their relationships with their colleagues, satisfaction with position, and aspects of their family. Demographic variables included in this dataset are marital status and political party affiliation.

Keeping the Peace: Police Discretion and the Mentally Disordered in Chicago, 1980-1981 (ICPSR 8438)

For this data collection, information on police-citizen encounters was collected to explore the peacekeeping functions of the police and their handling of encounters with mentally ill persons. The data were gathered for part or all of 270 shifts through observations by researchers riding in police cars in two Chicago police districts during a 14-month period in 1980-1981. In Part 1 (Shift Level), information was collected once per shift on the general level of activity during the shift and the observer's perceptions of emotions/attitudes displayed by the police officers he/she observed. The file also contains, for each of the 270 shifts, information about the personal characteristics, work history, and working relationships of the police officers observed. Part 2 (Encounter Level) contains detailed information on each police-citizen encounter including its nature, location, police actions and/or responses, citizens involved, and their characteristics and behavior. A unique and consistent shift identification number is attached to each encounter so that information about police officer characteristics from Part 1 may be matched with Part 2. There are 1,382 police-citizen encounters involving 2,555 citizens in this collection.
