This dataset contains concentrations of specific chemical compounds found in wastewater from locations throughout the United States of America. Sampling was conducted from the fall of 2023 for approximately one year as part of the National Institute for Drug Abuse (NIDA) 2023 Pilot program. Concentrations were ascertained via LC-MS/MS protocols developed by Biobot Analytics. Parent compounds are broken down into their metabolites upon ingestion and excretion. Both parent compounds and their metabolites are found in wastewater and concentrations for both groups are included in this dataset.

Waste Management Perceptions (ICPSR 181063)

We explore public perceptions of effective waste management strategies in the United States. Across several measures, a significant majority of participants erroneously consider recycling to be the most effective option. However, this misplaced preference for recycling is not static. The number of participants who preferred source reduction increased when fewer choice options were presented and when actions were framed socially instead of individually. For some measures, participants understand that preventing waste is better generally—but misperceive recycling as the best action that they can undertake as individuals. For consumers and producers alike, policies and other interventions should promote source reduction and reuse, which may also help correct the misplaced preference for recycling.

The Ghana Population, Consumption, and Environment Survey (or Ghana-PCE Survey) was conducted in 2002 in collaboration with investigators at the University of Science and Technology (Kumasi) and the University of Cape Coast. The survey was designed to examine the social and demographic processes that are closely linked to health and environmental health risks, and how these in turn influence local thinking about environmental issues. The 2002 Ghana-PCE Survey collected information on women's birth histories (birth dataset), occupations and events over the respondent's lifetime (men's and women's calendar datasets), and the health of respondents' children who were at or under 6 years of age (children dataset). Additionally, information was collected on the availability of services such as electricity and drinking water, economic conditions, and perceived necessity of developmental programs (community dataset), as well as the availability of services such as waste disposal, the size of households, and the materials used in construction of houses (household dataset). Respondents' were also asked about voting behavior, community organization membership, public health practices, knowledge of illnesses in children, prevention and treatment of diseases, family planning, and environmental attitudes and awareness (individual dataset). Demographic information collected includes age, sex, occupation, birth region, languages spoken, ethnicity, marital status, residence ownership, religion, and education.

This round of Eurobarometer surveys diverged from the standard Eurobarometer measures and queried respondents on the following major areas of focus: (1) discrimination, (2) radioactive waste, and (3) purchasing in the European Union (EU). For the first major focus, discrimination, respondents were queried about how widespread various types of discrimination were, how common they were compared with five years ago, if in the past year they had personally felt discriminated against or witnessed discrimination, and the existence of multiple discrimination. Additional queries included how comfortable respondents would be with having a person from a different minority group as a neighbor, what criteria would put an employment candidate at a disadvantage, their feelings about having people from different minority groups holding the highest elected political position in their country, opinions about specific measures for equal opportunity in employment, whether enough effort was made to fight discrimination, and if they would know their rights if a victim of discrimination. For the second major focus, radioactive waste, respondents were asked how informed they felt about radioactive waste, their opinions about nuclear energy, its management and the advantages of its use, and their opinions about radioactive waste and its disposal. Further queries asked respondents whom they trusted to give them information about radioactive waste management, their reactions to a radioactive waste site being built near their home, and their opinions about the management and monitoring practices of radioactive waste between EU member states and the EU. For the third major focus, purchasing in the European Union, respondents were queried about whether they had purchased or tried to purchase goods/services in the last 12 months, in their own and in another EU country, the total value of purchases, and whether they had offers from sellers in other EU countries. Queries also asked if respondents experienced unsolicited, deceptive, or fraudulent offers, coercion, unfair contract terms, shopping at a distance, the cooling-off period, making complaints, and their interest and confidence in cross-border shopping in comparison to shopping in their own country. Finally, on the same topic, respondents were asked about their use of price comparison Web sites, the protection of consumers and the process for resolving disputes, financial services, holiday packages, and nonfood purchases. Demographic and other background information includes age, gender, nationality, origin of birth (personal and parental), marital status, left-right political self-placement, occupation, age when stopped full-time education, household composition, religious affiliation, ownership of a fixed or a mobile telephone and other durable goods, social contacts, minority group affiliation, quality of life pertaining to health, type and size of locality, region of residence, and language of interview (in select countries).

Decision-Related Research on the Organization of Service Delivery Systems in Metropolitan Areas: Solid Waste Management (ICPSR 7487)

This study represents one of four research projects on service delivery systems in metropolitan areas, covering fire protection (DECISION-RELATED RESEARCH ON THE ORGANIZATION OF SERVICE DELIVERY SYSTEMS IN METROPOLITAN AREAS: FIRE PROTECTION [ICPSR 7409]), police protection (DECISION-RELATED RESEARCH ON THE ORGANIZATION OF SERVICE DELIVERY SYSTEMS IN METROPOLITAN AREAS: POLICE PROTECTION [ICPSR 7427]), public health (DECISION-RELATED RESEARCH ON THE ORGANIZATION OF SERVICE DELIVERY SYSTEMS IN METROPOLITAN AREAS: PUBLIC HEALTH [ICPSR 7374]), and solid waste management (the present study). All four projects used a common unit of analysis, namely all 200 Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSAs) that, according to the 1970 Census, had a population of less than 1,500,000 and were entirely located within a single state. In each project, a limited amount of information was collected for all 200 SMSAs. More extensive data were gathered within independently drawn samples of these SMSAs, for all local geographical units and each administrative jurisdiction or agency in the service delivery areas. Two standardized systems of geocoding -- the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) codes and the Office of Revenue Sharing (ORS) codes -- were used, so that data from various sources could be combined. The use of these two coding schemes also allows users to combine data from two or more of the research projects conducted in conjunction with the present one, or to add data from a wide variety of public data files. The present study investigated the delivery of solid waste collection and disposal service, focusing on the differences in efficiency and effectiveness of the public and private sectors. Six major research tasks were undertaken in the first phase of the project: identification of the prevalence of alternative collection arrangement types, analysis of prevailing solid waste collection practices, analysis of cost components of residential refuse collection, econometric analyses of the relative efficiency of the three main arrangement types (municipal collection, local contract service, and franchised service), efficiency of alternative regulatory schemes for residential solid waste collection, and identification of prevailing service arrangements for solid waste disposal. For the purposes of the study, estimates of true cost were made from a variety of data sources. The basic research instrument was a telephone survey conducted in 1,377 cities with populations exceeding 2,500, located in the 200 previously selected SMSAs. This survey obtained information on the means of collection, means of payment, quality of service, and coverage of households. In 102 of these cities, subsequent field visits were used to obtain cost information for municipal collection. In an additional 163 cities, where individuals arranged for their own collection, a telephone survey of households was conducted to identify contracting firms and to ascertain the quality of service. Additional data were collected from 42 franchise operators and from contractors in 242 cities. Legal information was collected on contract and ordinance provisions, regulatory matters, and state law relating to arrangements for the provision of these kinds of services. Information from these sources was combined with data obtained from the International City Management Association and the 1970 Census of Housing and Population. Part 1 contains all the data collected at the city level. Part 2 provides information for the 281 counties in which the 1,377 municipalities were located.
