Detroit Metro Area Communities Study (DMACS) Wave 19, Michigan, 2024 (ICPSR 39502)

Released/updated on: 2025-12-16
Geographic coverage: Detroit, United States, Michigan
Time period: 2024-04-01--2024-04-12

The Detroit Metro Area Communities Study (DMACS) is a panel survey of Detroit residents aged 18 and older. The original panel of respondents was drawn from an address-based probability sample of all occupied Detroit households in 2016 and has since been refreshed through additional address-based sampling annually. Between April 1 and April 12, 2024, we launched our 19th survey; a shorter than usual, 2-week turnaround survey with a subset of our active panelists. We invited 2,150 previously enrolled panelists who had provided their contact information and given us permission to text them to participate in a self-administered online or interviewer-administered telephone survey.

Topics include: community engagement, voting, sense of community, community priorities, and priority local political issues.

The confrontations between civilian protesters and police forces in Ferguson, Missouri in 2014 and Baltimore, Maryland in 2015 sparked a renewed public debate about the “militarization” of the police.  Politicians and pundits expressed concern that the images and video of police officers confronting civilian protesters armed with machine guns and armored vehicles disseminated through mainstream and social media would undermine the mass public’s trust in law enforcement and rule of law, more broadly.  We treated this concern as an empirical question.  In May 2016, we fielded a survey experiment to a sample of participants drawn from Qualtrics’ national, online, opt-in panel.  We randomly-exposed participants to one of three news pictures that depicted a spectrum of police-civilian interactions, ranging in nature from friendly to hostile.  Images were designed to evoke thoughts of militarized policing, community policing, and stop-and-frisk policing.  This survey data set also includes a variety of questions that allow researchers to test the effect of exposure to images of police-civilian interactions on confidence in local and national governments; confidence in local and national police; perceptions of police misconduct; perceptions of police bias; and public opinion about police weapons, equipment, and gear.  Questions are also included to operationalize a range of demographic and political characteristics of participants.

Cooperative Congressional Election Study (CCES) Latino-Hispanic Survey, [United States], 2010 (ICPSR 35616)

Released/updated on: 2018-02-19
Geographic coverage: United States
Time period: 2010-01-01--2010-12-31
The Cooperative Congressional Election Study (CCES) studies how Americans view Congress and hold their representatives accountable during elections, how they voted and their electoral experiences, and how their behavior and experiences vary with political geography and social context. This study constructed a very large sample capable of capturing variation across a wide variety of legislative constituencies. The state-level samples are sufficiently large as to measure with a reasonable degree of precision the distribution of voters' preferences within most states. The 2010 CCES involved 30 teams, yielding a Common Content sample of 55,400 cases. The Latino-Hispanic Survey was conducted concurrent to the core CCES study. The Latino-Hispanic Survey was a study of Latino/Hispanic individuals, yielding 1,150 voting-age Latinos. As part of the study, the core set of 2010 CCES Common Content questions were asked along with a battery of Latino-specific questions. Demographic information include age, income, race, and gender. The survey was administered in English and Spanish, with the respondent selecting which language they preferred to use at the start of each wave of the study.

ANES 2016 Time Series Study (ICPSR 36824)

Released/updated on: 2017-09-19
Geographic coverage: United States
Time period: 2016-09-01--2017-01-31

This study is part of the American National Election Study (ANES), a time-series collection of national surveys fielded continuously since 1948. The American National Election Studies are designed to present data on Americans' social backgrounds, enduring political predispositions, social and political values, perceptions and evaluations of groups and candidates, opinions on questions of public policy, and participation in political life. As with all Time Series studies conducted during years of presidential elections, respondents were interviewed during the two months preceding the November election (Pre-election interview), and then re-interviewed during the two months following the election (Post-election interview). Like its predecessors, the 2016 ANES was divided between questions necessary for tracking long-term trends and questions necessary to understand the particular political moment of 2016. The study maintains and extends the ANES time-series 'core' by collecting data on Americans' basic political beliefs, allegiances, and behaviors, which are so critical to a general understanding of politics that they are monitored at every election, no matter the nature of the specific campaign or the broader setting. This 2016 ANES study features a dual-mode design with both traditional face-to-face interviewing (n=1,181) and surveys conducted on the Internet (n=3,090), and a total sample size of 4,271. In addition to content on electoral participation, voting behavior, and public opinion, the 2016 ANES Time Series Study contains questions about areas such as media exposure, cognitive style, and values and predispositions. Several items first measured on the 2012 ANES study were again asked, including "Big Five" personality traits using the Ten Item Personality Inventory (TIPI), and skin tone observations made by interviewers in the face-to-face study. For the first time, ANES has collected supplemental data directly from respondents' Facebook accounts. The post-election interview also included Module 5 from the Comparative Study of Electorial Systems (CSES), exploring themes in populism, perceptions on elites, corruption, and attitudes towards representative democracy. Face-to-face interviews were conducted by trained interviewers using computer assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) software on laptop computers. During a portion of the face-to-face interview, the respondent answered certain sensitive questions on the laptop computer directly, without the interviewer's participation (known as computer assisted self-interviewing (CASI)). Internet questionnaires could be completed anywhere the respondent had access to the Internet, on a computer or on a mobile device. Respondents were only eligible to compete the survey in the mode for which they were sampled. Demographic variables include respondent age, education level, political affiliation, race/ethnicity, marital status, and family composition.

The California correctional system underwent a dramatic transformation under California's Public Safety Realignment Act (AB 109) in 2011, a law that shifted from the state to the counties the responsibility for monitoring, tracking, and incarcerating lower level offenders previously bound for state prison. Realignment, therefore, presents the opportunity to witness 58 natural experiments in the downsizing of prisons. Counties faced different types of offenders, implemented different programs in different community and jail environments, and adopted differing sanctioning policies. This study examines the California's Public Safety Realignment Act's effect on counties' criminal justice institutions, including the disparities that result in charging, sentencing, and resource decisions.

Euro-Barometer 31: European Elections, 1989: Pre-Election Survey, March-April 1989 (ICPSR 9322)

Released/updated on: 2017-03-27
Geographic coverage: Europe, United Kingdom, Portugal, Global, Spain, Greece, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland, Denmark, Italy, France, Germany
Time period: 1989-03-02--1989-04-19
This round of Euro-Barometer surveys had for its major focus issues surrounding the European elections. Questions on political party preferences asked respondents which party they felt the closest to, how they voted in their country's last general election, how they would vote if a general election were held tomorrow, which party they would vote for within their countries, how they planned to vote in the June 1989 elections for the European Parliament, how they viewed the importance of certain national problems, and what they thought about democracy and individual liberties. Respondents were asked about their usage of the media for news, their opinions of an "All Europe" television channel and what it should offer, and how the single European market planned for in 1992 would affect their lives. The survey also gauged respondents' perceptions of the general attitude of their countries' political parties toward the most important problems facing their nations. Other items included life satisfaction, union membership, smoking habits, views on environmental issues such as nuclear accidents and radioactivity, views regarding cancer, and knowledge of and attitudes toward European Community institutions and policies, including the Common Agricultural Policy. Respondents also were asked to name current topics and events most important for them and to state whether or not certain causes such as the promotion of world peace were worth taking risks and making sacrifices for. The section on cancer queried respondents about their knowledge of the causes of cancer and medical recommendations for its early detection and prevention, and asked respondents if they followed or intended to follow those recommendations. Women were questioned about specific kinds of cancer detection examinations as well. Additional information was gathered on family income, number of persons and children under 15 residing in the home, size of locality, region of residence, occupation of the head of household, and the respondent's age, sex, occupation, education, religion, religiosity, subjective social class standing, and left-right political self-placement.

The American National Election Study (ANES): 2016 Pilot Study sought to test new instrumentation under consideration for potential inclusion in the ANES 2016 Time Series Study, as well as future ANES studies. Much of the content is based on proposals from the ANES user community submitted through the Online Commons page, found on the ANES home page. The survey included questions about preferences in the presidential primary, stereotyping, the economy, discrimination, race and racial consciousness, police use of force, and numerous policy issues, such as immigration law, health insurance, and federal spending. It was conducted on the Internet using the YouGov panel, an international market research firm that administers polls that collect information about politics, public affairs, products, brands, as well as other topics of general interest.

ANES 1984 Time Series Study (ICPSR 8298)

Released/updated on: 2015-11-10
Geographic coverage: United States
Time period: 1984-01-01--1984-12-31
This study is part of a time-series collection of national surveys fielded continuously since 1952. The election studies are designed to present data on Americans' social backgrounds, enduring political predispositions, social and political values, perceptions and evaluations of groups and candidates, opinions on questions of public policy, and participation in political life. Part 1 of this collection contains the traditional Pre- and Post-Election Survey (ICPSR Version). Interviews were conducted in person prior to the 1984 election. In the post-election wave, half of the respondents were randomly assigned to be reinterviewed in person, and the other half to be reinterviewed by telephone using a shortened version of the questionnaire. In addition to the standard core questions, new topic areas (most of which had been piloted in 1983) included measures of "predispositions" such as economic individualism and egalitarianism, and group identification items. Vote validation data also are provided. Part 2, Continuous Monitoring: January 11, 1984, Through December 31, 1984, was designed to examine the impact of the election campaign on voters' perceptions, beliefs, and preferences. Respondents were questioned about their knowledge of the candidates' stands on the issues, about their own stand on the issues, and about their opinions and evaluations of the candidates. Interviews were conducted by telephone throughout the year, with a total of 46 separate cross-section samples selected by a random-digit dialing design, and an average of 76 respondents interviewed in each of the 46 sample weeks. Although the survey instrument was very much the same from one sample week to the next, some questions were deleted and others added during the course of the campaign, as issues became more or less relevant. Thirteen versions of the questionnaire were incorporated into this data file. For each telephone number selected in the Continuous Monitoring Study administrative information is included, such as number of calls, household composition, and final disposition.

National Politics Study, 2008 (ICPSR 36167)

Released/updated on: 2015-08-07
Geographic coverage: United States
Time period: 2008-09-05--2008-12-15

The 2008 election offers a rare opportunity to analyze a significant event in American history - the election of the first African American president. Because the longitudinal panel series began in 2004, prior to the emergence of President Obama as a serious political candidate and nominee, the results from these surveys provide a rare vehicle for comparing data over time on important demographic, political, and, of particular interest given President Obama's racial background, racial and ethnic issues related to vote choice and political behavior. The wealth of data obtained from this survey will benefit scholars for many years to come.

This report provides a general overview of some of the key findings from the 2008 data collection. Topics covered include: demographic information of the population, work status, home ownership, political ideology, party identification, presidential choice, race relations, feeling thermometer data for a variety of political figures and relevant groups or organizations, and current events such as the Iraq War and same-sex marriage. Because differences among the racial and ethnic groups surveyed in this study are of political significance (Whites, African Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans, and Caribbean Blacks), much of the data presented here is disaggregated by racial and ethnic group.

Euro-barometer 38.0: European Court of Justice, Passive Smoking, and Consumer Issues, September-October 1992 (ICPSR 6044)

Released/updated on: 2015-04-27
Geographic coverage: Europe, United Kingdom, Portugal, Global, Spain, Greece, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland, Denmark, Italy, France, Germany
Time period: 1992-09-21--1992-10-15
This round of Euro-Barometer surveys focused on the current status and continuing development of the European Community (EC). Respondents were asked to choose which countries they believed should become part of the EC by the year 2000, to give their opinions on the imminent establishment of the Single European Market and the effectiveness of the European Parliament, and to indicate their knowledge and attitudes about the Maastricht Treaty and the proposed European Monetary Union. Participants in this Euro-Barometer also provided a detailed assessment of the operation of the European Court of Justice situated in Luxembourg. Respondents were asked whether they had a favorable impression of the Court, how important a part it played in the EC, how familiar they were with its activities, what role the Court should take on issues such as abortion, and how they viewed the relative importance of EC law versus the national laws of member countries. Respondents also furnished information concerning their attitudes and behavior toward smoking. Questions focused on the type of tobacco products used, the number of cigarettes consumed daily, the desire of smokers to limit their consumption, the attitudes of both smokers and nonsmokers toward the use of tobacco products in public, the effects of being exposed to other people's smoke ("passive smoking"), opinions regarding regulations prohibiting smoking in some public places, feelings about smoke in the workplace, the advertising of tobacco products, and knowledge of the "European Code of Cancer" (a set of elementary rules, developed by a committee of cancer experts, for the possible prevention of cancer). An additional section of this survey focused on the safety of consumer products and services. Respondents were asked what was most important to them when purchasing a product, whether enough attention was being paid to consumer product safety, what concerns they had regarding product safety, and whether governments, private companies, or consumers themselves were mainly responsible for the safe use of certain products. Other areas of focus included safety expectations while traveling in other countries and the need to be told about potentially dangerous situations such as nuclear accidents, oil spills, or water contamination, the value of insurance to cover risks while traveling, worries regarding the safety of older adults and children, and the incidence of major domestic accidents among family members. As in previous Euro-Barometers, questions on political party preference asked respondents which party they felt the closest to, how they voted in their country's last general election, and how they would vote if a general election were held the next day. Additional information was gathered on family income, number of people residing in the home, size of locality, home ownership, trade union membership, region of residence, occupation of the head of household, and the respondent's age, sex, education, religion, religiosity, subjective social class standing, socio-professional status, and left-right political self-placement.

Time period: 2003-01-01--2003-12-31
Social Weather Surveys are SWS-initiated national surveys of the general Filipino public. Dating from 1986, initially semi-annual and quarterly since 1992, these surveys are meant to supplement, not duplicate, existing government statistics. They include both core indicators monitored regularly and items on contemporary issues. The minimum sample size is 1,200. A standard Social Weather Survey has two questionnaires, one for the household head and one for a random adult. The First Quarter 2003 Social Weather Survey was fielded over March 10 - 25, 2003 throughout the country. It used face-to-face interviews of 1,200 respondents divided into random samples of 300 each in Metro Manila, the Balance of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Adults, aged 18 years and older, were asked their views on issues such as economics, politics, crime, education, reading habits, socio-demographic characteristics, and other issues of current public interest in the Philippines. The survey also gathers information from household heads about the members of the household and household characteristics. Demographic variables include sex, age, religion, education, marital status, household composition, language uses, and occupation.
