ABC News Hurricane Katrina Anniversary Poll, August 2006 (ICPSR 4664)

This special topic poll, conducted August 14-20, 2006, is part of a continuing series of monthly polls that solicit public opinion on various political and social issues. The focus of this data collection was on the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Part 1, FEMA Counties, contains data from a sample of 501 adults living in counties in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama that were designated as Hurricane Katrina disaster areas. Part 2, Orleans Parish Including Oversamples, contains data on respondents living in Orleans Parish, Louisiana, including oversamples of 160 respondents contacted via landline telephones, and 120 respondents contacted via cell phones. Respondents were asked to rate the recovery efforts of federal, state, and local governments with respect to Hurricane Katrina, and how much trust and confidence they had in the federal government and the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) ability to respond to another disaster. Opinions were collected on whether Hurricane Katrina was the result of global climate change or just a severe weather event. Information was collected about the damage caused to respondents' residence and personal property, as well as the severity of the damage, how much of the losses were insured, and whether recovery had already occurred. Respondents were asked to rate the impact Hurricane Katrina had had on their life, whether they suffered a long-term negative impact on their finances, health, and emotional well-being, and whether any friends or family members were seriously injured or killed as as a result of the hurricane. A series of questions asked respondents to rate the job of groups involved with assisting recovery, such as the the United States Small Business Administration, state relief agencies, and insurance companies. Views were sought concerning whether respondents' trust in the government and fellow man was affected by the hurricane, how much they worried about another hurricane occurring, and how much extra stress was created by the possibility of another hurricane. Additional topics addressed whether race and poverty affected the recovery effort, and whether problems with the relief effort were an indication of racial inequality in the United States. Demographic variables include sex, age, race, education level, household income, political party affiliation, political philosophy, employment status, marital status, and type of residential area (e.g., urban or rural).

ABC News/Washington Post Hurricane Katrina Poll, September 2005 (ICPSR 4519)

This special topic poll fielded September 2, 2005, was undertaken to assess respondents' opinions on Hurricane Katrina and the governmental response. Respondents were asked whether or not they approved of President Bush's and the federal government's response to the aftermath of the hurricane and whether or not they felt the state, local, and national governments were adequately prepared for this or other potential disasters. Respondents were also queried on their opinion on the deployment of National Guard troops, and if the city should be rebuilt on the same location. The survey also included questions on gas prices and whether or not oil companies were taking advantage of the situation from the hurricane. Demographic information included political affiliation, age, race, and sex.

This data collection provides selected economic, social, demographic, and political information for 48 states of the United States during the 1950s and 1960s. Variables describe population characteristics, such as the number of adults aged 65 and over, the number of dentists and physicians, the number of patients in mental hospitals, the death rates of white and non-white infants under one year of age per 1,000 live births, respectively, the number of recipients of public assistance such as Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC), elementary and secondary school enrollment, enrollment in vocational programs, the total number of students in higher education, the number of those conferred with M.A. and Ph.D. degrees, and the number of workers in research experiment stations. Other variables provide economic information, such as personal income per capita, average monthly payment per recipient of some public assistance programs, average salary per month for full-time state and local employees, state and local government revenues and expenditures, and various intergovernmental revenues from the federal government for certain services. Additional variables record crime statistics, such as the number of robbery, burglary, larceny, auto theft, assault, rape, and murder offenses per 100,000 of the population. There are also variables that give information on each state's topography, such as the acreage of state parks, total farm acreage, municipal road mileage, and total unsurfaced road mileage.

This study is a 40-year time series of social, economic, and political indicators at the national level for the United States in the period 1929-1968. The variables include data on expenditures from the federal budget by various departments, agencies, and commissions, the number of employees in the various United States departments, measures of the political characteristics of the United States Congress, such as the number of Repuplicans, Democrats, and "other" party members in the United States Senate and in the House of Representatives, business and consumer expenditures, and attributes of the population. Data are also provided on the number per 1,000 of immigrants to the United States, membership of all the religious bodies in the United States, labor union membership, total households in the United States, total civilian labor force, and the number of the unemployed. Demographic variables provide information on education, births, and death rates. The unit of analysis is the year. Variables 2-281 cover the period from 1929-1968 and Variables 282-408 cover only the period from 1947-1968.

The Forces of Change Survey is an annual survey completed by the state and territorial health agencies that comprise the membership of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO). ASTHO is the national nonprofit organization representing public health agencies in the United States, the U.S. territories and freely associated states, and the District of Columbia, and the over 100,000 public health professionals these agencies employ. The Forces of Change Survey primarily focuses on emergent and rapidly changing trends. The data collected sought to determine the current climate at state and territorial health agencies as it related to budget, workforce, accreditation, and special interest topics. The 2017 Forces of Change Survey examined the following topics:

  • Health agency resources
  • Activities related to the Zika virus
  • Opioid epidemic response
  • Communicating the value of public health
  • Efforts to advance health equity

The web-based survey, fielded by ASTHO in May of 2017, was administered to state and territorial health agencies through their senior deputies. A total of 52 health agencies responded (from 46 states, Washington, D.C., and five territories and freely associated states). Data included as part of this collection includes one dataset with 122 variables for 52 cases.

The 2012 ASTHO Profile Survey is a survey conducted by the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) to gather information on state, territorial, and freely associated state public health agencies (S/THAs) and their activities, structure, and resources. The survey aims to define the scope of state and territorial public health services, identify variations in practice among public health agencies, and contribute to the development of best practices in governmental public health. The 121-question instrument was disseminated electronically in October 2012 and completed by senior deputies at each S/THA. The survey closed in May 2013; the response rate was 96 percent among the 50 states and D.C., and 92 percent among all states, territories, and freely associated states.

The surveys were administered in December 2020 and completed by state and territorial health agency staff at each S/THA including senior deputies, chief financial officers, and human resource directors. The survey closed in March 2021; 80% of states and DC responded to at least one survey, of which 40% of states and DC responded to all three surveys; 38% of territories responded to at least one survey, of which 11% responded to all three surveys.

The Profile aims to define the scope of S/THA services, identify variations in practice among public health agencies, and contribute to the development of best practices in governmental public health. The Profile began in 2007 and was fielded on average every three years between 2007 and 2022. The data collected through the Profile represent the breadth of work overseen by health agencies and shows how the public health field has shifted in response to societal changes and emergent needs. Attitudes of American State Legislators, 1975 (ICPSR 8161)

This data collection focuses on state legislators' attitudes towards political corruption. The first wave of interviewing started in October 1975. The survey consisted of items concerning general attitudes about political corruption as well as questions designed to assess the likelihood of the occurrence of political corruption at various levels of government. In addition, state legislators were asked to evaluate the extent to which particular types of activities were corrupt. For some of these activities, legislators were asked to assess the frequency of occurrence within their own legislative setting. The survey instrument also contained questions about current social and political issues. Standard demographic variables such as age, sex, and education and other background variables such as party identification and district information were included as well.

Most of the data in the California Special Election Exit Poll and Phone Survey, 2003, were collected through interviews conducted with voters exiting polling places in California on the day of the gubernatorial recall election. Early and absentee voters were polled via the telephone from September 29, 2003, through October 5, 2003. Respondents were polled for their vote in the recall election, when they decided to vote for that choice, their opinions of Governor Gray Davis, their choice for governor if Gray Davis were removed from office, the most important factor in choosing their candidate, and for whom they would vote if there were only two candidates for governor, Cruz Bustamante (Democrat) and Arnold Schwarzenegger (Republican). Respondents were also asked to give their opinions of candidates Bustamante, Tom McClintock (Republican), and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and whether or not the latter addressed the issues in adequate detail. Other candidates included Peter Miguel Camejo (Green Party) and Arianna Huffington (Independent). Specific questions about the voting process concerned problems with the voting equipment and opinions of the recall process. Respondents were asked questions about state issues such as their vote on Proposition 54 (banning state and local governments from classifying anyone by race or ethnicity), the condition of the state economy, whether the budget deficit could be resolved without raising taxes, issuing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, and the California law extending domestic partner benefits to homosexual couples. Additional questions queried respondents on their position on abortion and how George W. Bush was handling his job as president of the United States. Background information includes age, education, frequency of voting in previous elections, household income in 2002, labor union membership within the household, political ideology, political party affiliation, race, sex, sexual orientation, and whether the respondent is of Mexican or Hispanic descent.

This poll, fielded September 6-7, 2005, is part of a continuing series of monthly polls that solicit public opinion on the presidency and on a range of other social and political issues. Respondents were asked to give their opinions of President George W. Bush and his handling of the presidency and issues such as the situation in Iraq and Hurricane Katrina. Those polled identified the most important problem facing the country, and they expressed their level of confidence in the federal government to protect the country against terrorism and respond to natural disasters. Views were sought on how well federal, state and local government officials prepared for and responded to Hurricane Katrina, who was to blame for the disaster, and whether race and National Guard deployment in Iraq were factors in the government's response. Other questions asked whether the looting and violence in New Orleans in the days following Hurricane Katrina were understandable, whether New Orleans would ever be a working city again, and how well the media covered the hurricane and its aftermath. Respondents were also asked whether they had ever visited New Orleans, whether they or someone they knew was directly affected by Hurricane Katrina, and whether a member of their household made a charitable donation to the victims. Additional topics addressed gasoline prices and availability after the hurricane, United States troop levels in Iraq, whether the United States Senate should confirm United States Supreme Court nominee John Roberts, and how often respondents watched network television news programs. Demographic variables included sex, age, race, marital status, household income, education level, religious preference, type of residential area (e.g., urban or rural), political party affiliation, political philosophy, voter registration status, and for whom the respondent voted in the 2004 presidential election.
