2016 Latino Immigrant National Election Study (LINES), [United States] (ICPSR 38129)

The 2016 Latino Immigrant National Election Study (LINES) is a panel study of Latino foreign-born residents of the United States, with telephone surveys of nationally representative samples of respondents fielded in 3 waves over 2016-2017.

The first survey in the 2016 LINES took place during the general election campaign (August and September of 2016). Interviews (N = 1,800) were conducted in English and Spanish, although nearly all respondents opted for Spanish. Because many of the initial telephone numbers dialed were either out of service or otherwise unusable, the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) "Response Rate 1" calculation is low (.034). However, in cases when an eligible immigrant was identified based on the initial screening questions, only 12 percent opted not to complete the survey. On average, an interview that fall lasted approximately 25 minutes.

After the 2016 election, 576 immigrants took part in the second survey wave, which was fielded during the presidential transition period (a 32 percent re-contact rate). At this time, an additional fresh sample of 260 Latino immigrants was added to the study, again to help gauge and ameliorate any potential respondent attrition biases. Finally, in the summer of 2017 (July through early-September), a third wave was conducted, with all 1,800 immigrants from the pre-election baseline survey being eligible for interviewing. In this period, 31 percent of these immigrants (N = 554) were surveyed; this included 321 respondents who had taken part in the second wave and 233 who had not. To increase the sample size at this time and address attrition over time, 500 fresh immigrants were surveyed. In total, 2,560 immigrants took part in the 2016-2017 LINES: 1,800 from before the election, 260 during the presidential transition period, and 300 in the summer of 2017.

The questionnaire instrumentation used in the study was largely adapted from item wordings in the 2012 American National Election Study (ANES). The survey focuses on immigrant civic engagement and political socialization, including items on immigrant attitudes, opinions and electoral and non-electoral political behavior.

This special topic poll sought respondents' views on AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) as the greatest health problem facing the nation. Those queried were asked to describe their level of comfort engaging in casual contact with people with AIDS and working with others with AIDS and to comment on whether they approved of students with AIDS attending school. The return to professional basketball by Los Angeles Laker Magic Johnson after his 1991 retirement was addressed. Respondents were asked if they believed his presence on the court would put his teammates and/or opposing players at risk of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection. Background variables include sex and personal knowledge of others with AIDS.

ABC News "Nightline" AIDS Poll, June 1987 (ICPSR 8854)

The disease AIDS was the central topic of this survey. Respondents were asked if they approved of the way President Reagan was handling the situation involving the disease, and whether they approved or disapproved of a variety of steps that could be taken to prevent the spread of AIDS. Respondents also were asked if they thought immigrants, prison inmates and military personnel should be tested for the disease and if they themselves would voluntarily take a blood test. Their opinions on mandatory testing for AIDS were also elicited. The results of the poll were announced on the ABC television program "Nightline." Demographic characteristics of respondents are included.

This study analyzed the evolution of the status hierarchy within a large-scale, natural setting. The results of empirical analyses of status ratings within a large online community of software developers showed that, in the process of status attainment, community members tended to evaluate a focal actor's reputation according to publicly available social references, such as the number and status of other evaluators. Ironically, these same social references also worked to produce constraint in an actor's status mobility. In order to manage the large amount of data, a custom-written JAVA script was used to extract the pertinent data from the XML code and then insert the data into a SQL database, from which it was possible to use standard query language to combine information from the discrete panels into a single ASCII data file.

The Afrobarometer project was designed to assess attitudes toward democracy, markets, and civil society in several sub-Saharan African nations, and to track the evolution of such attitudes in those nations over time. This particular survey was concerned with the attitudes and opinions of the citizens of South Africa. Respondents gave their opinions of the performance of South Africa's President Thabo Mbeki and elected officials in local and national government, the government's handling of issues such as crime and the economy, the most important issues facing the nation, and whether the country was heading in the right direction. A series of questions addressed respondents' living conditions, the economic conditions and political influence of their own ethnic group compared to other groups in the country, and whether they felt more attached to their national identity or their ethnic group. Additional questions asked about media sources of information, respondents' ownership of consumer goods such as books and automobiles, their physical and mental health status, and whether any close friends or relatives had died of AIDS. Information was also collected on the presence of institutions, public utilities, and soliders in the area. In addition, the Round 4.5 survey includes special modules on taxation; gender issues; crime, conflict and insecurity; globalization; social service delivery; and health. The surveys also collect a large set of socio-demographic indicators such as age, gender, education level, poverty level, language and ethnicity, and religious affiliation, as well as political party affiliation. This particular data collection was concerned with the attitudes and opinions of the citizens of Zimbabwe, and also includes "country-specific questions" designed specifically for the Zimbabwe survey. Respondents were polled on their knowledge of the government, including the identification of government officials, their level of personal involvement in political, governmental, and community affairs, their participation in national elections, and the inclusiveness of the government. Economic questions addressed the past, present, and future of the country's and the respondents' economic conditions, and respondents' living conditions. Additional topics included the performance of security forces during the 2007 election, government manipulation of security forces, the response of government agencies to election grievances, and causes and resolutions of violent conflicts. Background variables include age, gender, ethnicity, education, religious affiliation and participation, political party affiliation, language spoken most at home, whether the respondent was the head of household, current and past employment status, whether a close friend or relative had died from AIDS, and language used in the interview.
