Abstract:Multilingual learners (MLs) represent an increasing proportion of public school students. While much attention has been given to their academic performance in English language arts and math, less research has addressed their academic performance in science, particularly in elementary school. This study leveraged nationally representative data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study of 2010-11 to document the science test score trajectories of MLs from kindergarten through fifth grade. Using descriptive statistics and regression analyses, our findings document wide variation in elementary science test performance among subgroups of MLs while also documenting the rapid gains this group makes in science performance across the elementary years as compared to non-MLs. Our study is among the first to use nationally representative data to examine science learning trajectories of MLs and provides a foundation for policy, practice, and future research aimed at understanding how the linguistic assets of MLs promote science learning.

As linguistic diversity continues to increase in the United States public school system, schools are expected to meet the needs of their ever-changing student body. While much attention within education research has understandably focused on multilingual learners’ (MLs) English language acquisition, an emergent body of work points to science as an important subject for attention among elementary MLs. We suggest that understanding what science and language inputs are afforded to MLs in schools can contribute to understanding the needs and opportunities for enhancing MLs’ science learning. This study leveraged nationally representative data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study of 2010–2011 to explore the science and language inputs available to MLs in elementary school. Using descriptive statistics, our analysis of science and language inputs provides evidence on what MLs have, or do not have, access to inside of their schools. Science inputs appear to be relatively evenly distributed across classrooms serving non-MLs, MLs, and subgroups therein. In comparison, language inputs are differentially distributed across ML subgroups, but they are distributed in ways that may align with student needs. However, while the science inputs do not necessarily vary across subgroups, the language inputs do, and this may affect how students can engage with science inputs. In understanding what science and language inputs MLs are afforded, this study provides a foundation for how to improve formal learning environments for them, especially regarding science learning.

Reclassification and Multilingual Learners' Science Achievement. TESOL Quarterly.https://doi.org/10.1002/tesq.3270Abstract:This study contributes to a growing body of scholarship at the intersection of bilingual education and education policy and examines reclassification, or the transition out of formal English language services in schools, as one potential lever in accelerating or decelerating multilingual learners’ science learning. More specifically, it traces multilingual learners’ science academic achievement vis-à-vis science test scores over a six-year period using the nationally-representative Early Childhood Longitudinal Study of 2010–11 (ECLS-K:2011) data set. We use regression analyses with panel data to explore the relationship of reclassification with MLs’ science achievement at a national scale, and then, how variation in contextual factors (including family, school, and individual characteristics) shapes this relationship. Results show that, after controlling for covariates and prior test scores, reclassification is not significantly associated with differential science test scores when compared to students that retain their EL status. Results further show that reclassification is associated with higher science achievement for MLs who were previously in a dual-language program but lower scores for those with higher prior achievement. We conclude with implications for the reclassification process, as well as directions for future research on reclassification, multilingual learners, and academic achievement.Funding:This research was made possible by a National Science Foundation DRK-12 grant. Longitudinal Study of American Youth, 1987-1994, 2007-2011, 2014-2017 (ICPSR 30263)

The Longitudinal Study of American Youth (LSAY) is a project that was funded by the National Science Foundation in 1985 and was designed to examine the development of: (1) student attitudes toward and achievement in science, (2) student attitudes toward and achievement in mathematics, and (3) student interest in and plans for a career in science, mathematics, or engineering, during middle school, high school, and the first four years post-high school. The relative influence parents, home, teachers, school, peers, media, and selected informal learning experiences had on these developmental patterns was considered as well.

The older LSAY cohort, Cohort One, consisted of a national sample of 2,829 tenth-grade students in public high schools throughout the United States. These students were followed for an initial period of seven years, ending four years after high school in 1994. Cohort Two, consisted of a national sample of 3,116 seventh-grade students in public schools that served as feeder schools to the same high schools in which the older cohort was enrolled. These students were followed for an initial period of seven years, concluding with a telephone interview approximately one year after the end of high school in 1994.

Beginning in the fall of 1987, the LSAY collected a wide array of information including: (1) a science achievement test and a mathematics achievement test each fall, (2) an attitudinal and experience questionnaire at the beginning and end of each school year, (3) reports about education and experience from all science and math teachers in each school, (4) reports on classroom practice by each science and math teacher serving a LSAY student, (5) an annual 25-minute telephone interview with one parent of each student, and (6) extensive school-level information from the principal of each study school.

In 2006, the NSF funded a proposal to re-contact the original LSAY students (then in their mid-30's) to resume data collection to determine their educational and occupational outcomes. Through an extensive tracking activity which involved: (1) online tracking, (2) newsletter mailing, (3) calls to parents and other relatives, (4) use of alternative online search methods, and (5) questionnaire mailing, more than 95 percent of the original sample of 5,945 LSAY students were located or accounted for. In addition to re-contacting the students, the proposal defined a new eligible sample of approximately 5,000 students and these young adults were asked to complete a survey in 2007. A second survey was conducted in the fall of 2008 that sought to gather updated information about occupational and education outcomes and to measure the civic scientific literacy of these young adults, in which to date more than 3,200 participants have responded. A third survey was conducted in the fall of 2009 that sought to gather updated information about occupational and education outcomes and to measure the participants' use of selected informal science education resources, in which to date more than 3,200 participants have responded. A fourth survey was conducted in the fall of 2010 that sought to gather updated information about occupational and education outcomes, as well as provided questions about the participants' interactions with their children, in which to date more than 3,200 participants have responded. Finally, a fifth survey was conducted in the fall of 2011 that sought to gather updated information about education outcomes and included an expanded occupation battery for all participants, as well as an expanded spousal information battery for all participants. The 2011 questionnaire also included items about the 2011 Fukushima incident in Japan along with attitudinal items about nuclear power and global climate change. To date approximately 3,200 participants responded to the 2011 survey.

There were no surveys conducted in 2012 or 2013. Beginning in 2014 the LSAY was funded by the National Institute on Aging for five years. This data release adds the 2017 data to the previous data release that included data through 2016.

The public release data files include information collected from the national probability sample students, their parents, and the science and mathematics teachers in the students' schools. The data covers the initial seven years, beginning in the fall of 1987, as well as the data collected in the 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017 questionnaires.

Part 1: LSAY Merged Cohort (Base File) contains student and parent data from both cohorts of the LSAY from 1987-1994 and student follow-up data from 2007-2011 and 2014-2017. Additionally, Parts 2 - 5 contain information gathered from two teacher background questionnaires and two principal questionnaires from 1987-1994.

This archive Stata data and code that the authors used to produce the tables and figures in the paper, Cite Unseen: Theory and Evidence on the Effect of Open Access on Cites to Academic Articles Across the Quality Spectrum, published in Managerial and Decision Economics. As described in the README file, we provide a separate program for each table and figure. Code and data are provided for the empirical regressions, and code is also provided for Monte Carlo simulations.
Paper abstract: We model open access as facilitating full-text acquisition, which, while often increasing cites, can reduce cites from readers who refrain from citing superficially after realizing the article is not worth citing. We test the theory with data on over 200,000 science articles binned by cites in the pre-study period. Consistent with theory, we find that opening access to an article on the journal’s website has a “Matthew effect” on citations: negative for the least-cited articles, positive for the most cited, and monotonic for quality levels in between. Estimates for broader open-access platforms and for cites coming from insiders versus outsiders also follow patterns consistent with theory.

Abstract:
Recent evidence points to the early elementary grades as a pivotal point for the development of science learning trajectories and achievement gaps. Using data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, this study estimates the degree to which time spent on science and the breadth of science topics/skills covered predict science achievement in the earliest grades of elementary school. Using regression along with school fixed effects and student fixed effects models, we find suggestive evidence in some models (student fixed effects and regression with observable controls) that time on science instruction is related to science achievement but little evidence that the number of science topics/skills covered are related to greater science achievement. These results are generally consistent across student subgroups. We discuss the implications for early science policy and practice.

Content Analysis of Undergraduate Psychology Textbooks (ICPSR 36966)

Psychology is one of the most popular undergraduate majors in American universities, despite the fact that the discipline still has many unsettled questions regarding fundamental philosophical and methodological issues. These issues may be associated with a lack of clarity regarding an accurate conception of science and the nature of the relationship between psychology and science with respect to these controversies. Kuhn (1967) has suggested that scientific paradigms are transmitted in textbooks.

To understand how the scientific status of psychology is depicted, 30 undergraduate textbooks were examined. Textbooks were examined on the following categories:

Since 1972, the General Social Survey (GSS) has been monitoring societal change and studying the growing complexity of American society. The GSS aims to gather data on contemporary American society in order to monitor and explain trends and constants in attitudes, behaviors, and attributes; to examine the structure and functioning of society in general as well as the role played by relevant subgroups; to compare the United States to other societies in order to place American society in comparative perspective and develop cross-national models of human society; and to make high-quality data easily accessible to scholars, students, policy makers, and others, with minimal cost and waiting. GSS questions include such items as national spending priorities, marijuana use, crime and punishment, race relations, quality of life, and confidence in institutions. Since 1988, the GSS has also collected data on sexual behavior including number of sex partners, frequency of intercourse, extramarital relationships, and sex with prostitutes. In 1985 the GSS co-founded the International Social Survey Program (ISSP). The ISSP has conducted an annual cross-national survey each year since then and has involved 58 countries and interviewed over one million respondents. The ISSP asks an identical battery of questions in all countries; the U.S. version of these questions is incorporated into the GSS. The 2016 GSS added in new variables covering information regarding social media use, suicide, hope and optimism, arts and culture, racial/ethnic identity, flexibility of work, spouses work and occupation, home cohabitation, and health.

The Eurobarometer series is a unique cross-national and cross-temporal survey program conducted on behalf of the European Commission. These surveys regularly monitor public opinion in the European Union (EU) member countries and consist of standard modules and special topic modules. The standard modules address attitudes towards European unification, institutions and policies, measurements for general socio-political orientations, as well as respondent and household demographics. The special topic modules address such topics as agriculture, education, natural environment and resources, public health, public safety and crime, and science and technology.

This round of Eurobarometer surveys covers the following special topics: (1) the European Parliament, (2) Autonomous Systems, (3) Gender Equality, and (4) Attitudes of Europeans towards tobacco and electronic cigarettes. Questions regarding the European Parliament (EP) included information on and the role of the EP, knowledge about European institutions and the EP, the present and future of the EP, European values and policies, European identity, and country specific media use. Respondents' opinions were collected regarding their awareness of, usage of, and attitude towards autonomous systems including robots, driverless cars, and civil drones. Respondents were also questioned about their perception of, attitude towards, and political priorities regarding gender equality and stereotypes, violence against women, and fields of inequality. Further questions were asked regarding smoking habits and various tobacco/nicotine products. Respondents were queried about their efforts to quit smoking, passive smoking inside, and banning advertisements for tobacco products. Lastly, respondents were asked about their socioeconomic position in society, whether their voice was being heard in the electoral system, and their opinions on if their home country and the European Union were generally going in the right or wrong direction.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Surveys of Public Attitudes monitored the general public's attitudes toward and interest in science and technology. The survey assessed levels of literacy and understanding of scientific and environmental concepts and constructs such as DNA, probability, and experimental methods, how scientific knowledge and information were acquired, attentiveness to public policy issues, and computer access and usage. Since 1979, the survey was administered at regular intervals (occurring every two or three years), producing 12 cross-sectional surveys through 2006. Respondents were asked how they received information concerning science or news (e.g., via newspapers, magazines, or television), what types of television programming they watched, and what kinds of magazines they read. They were also asked if they agreed with statements concerning science and technology and how they affect everyday living. Respondents were further asked a series of true and false questions regarding science-based statements (e.g., the center of the Earth is hot, all radioactivity is manmade, electrons are smaller than atoms, etc.). Additional topics included whether the respondent had a postsecondary degree, field of highest degree, number of science-based college courses taken, major in college, household ownership of a computer, access to the World Wide Web, number of hours spent on a computer at home or at work, and topics searched for via the Internet. Demographic variables include gender, race, age, marital status, number of people in household, level of education, and occupation.

Since 1972, the General Social Survey (GSS) has been monitoring societal change and studying the growing complexity of American society. The GSS aims to gather data on contemporary American society in order to monitor and explain trends and constants in attitudes, behaviors, and attributes; to examine the structure and functioning of society in general as well as the role played by relevant subgroups; to compare the United States to other societies in order to place American society in comparative perspective and develop cross-national models of human society; and to make high-quality data easily accessible to scholars, students, policy makers, and others, with minimal cost and waiting. GSS questions include such items as national spending priorities, marijuana use, crime and punishment, race relations, quality of life, and confidence in institutions. Since 1988, the GSS has also collected data on sexual behavior including number of sex partners, frequency of intercourse, extramarital relationships, and sex with prostitutes. The 2014 GSS has modules on quality of working life, shared capitalism, wealth, work and family balance, social identity, social isolation, and civic participation. In 1985 the GSS co-founded the International Social Survey Program (ISSP). The ISSP has conducted an annual cross-national survey each year since then and has involved 58 countries and interviewed over one million respondents. The ISSP asks an identical battery of questions in all countries; the U.S. version of these questions is incorporated into the GSS. The 2014 ISSP topics are National Identity and Citizenship. The Survey of Consumer Attitudes and Behavior series (also known as the Surveys of Consumers) was undertaken to measure changes in consumer attitudes and expectations, to understand why such changes occur, and to evaluate how they relate to consumer decisions to save, borrow, or make discretionary purchases. The data regularly include the Index of Consumer Sentiment, the Index of Current Economic Conditions, and the Index of Consumer Expectations. Since the 1940s, these surveys have been produced quarterly through 1977 and monthly thereafter. The surveys conducted in 2007 focused on topics such as evaluations and expectations about personal finances, employment, price changes, and the national business situation. Opinions were collected regarding respondents' appraisals of present market conditions for purchasing houses, automobiles, computers, and other durables. Also explored in this survey were respondents' types of savings and financial investments, loan use, family income, general feelings, religious affiliation, and retirement planning. Other topics in this series typically include ownership, lease, and use of automobiles, respondents' use of personal computers at home and in the office, respondents' attitudes towards science and technology, and respondents' familiarity with and use of the Internet. The International STEM Graduate Student Survey assesses why international students are coming to the United States for their graduate studies, the challenges they have faced while studying in the US, their future career plans, and whether they wish to stay or leave the US upon graduation. According to the Survey of Earned Doctorates by the National Science Foundation and the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics, international students accounted for over 40% of all US doctoral graduates in STEM in 2013. The factors that influence international students' decisions to study in the US and whether they will stay or leave are important to US economic competitiveness. We contacted graduate students (both domestic and international) in STEM disciplines from the top 10 universities ranked by the total number of enrolled international students. We estimate that we contacted approximately 15,990 students. Individuals were asked to taken an online survey regarding their background, reasons for studying in the US, and whether they plan to stay or leave the US upon graduation. We received a total of 2,322 completed surveys, giving us a response rate of 14.5%. 1,535 of the completed were from domestic students and 787 of which were from international students. Raw survey data are presented here.Survey participants were contacted via Qualtrics to participate in this survey. The Universe of this survey data set pertains to all graduate students (Master's and PhD) in STEM disciplines from the following universities: Columbia University, University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, Michigan State University, Northeastern University, Purdue University, University of Southern California, Arizona State University, University of California at Los Angeles, New York University, University of Washington at Seattle. This round of Euro-Barometer surveys queried respondents on standard Euro-Barometer measures, such as how satisfied they were with their present life, whether they attempted to persuade others close to them to share their views on subjects they held strong opinions about, whether they discussed political matters, what their country's goals should be for the next ten years, and how they viewed the need for societal change. Additional questions focused on the respondents' knowledge of and opinions on the European Community (EC), including how well-informed they felt about the EC, what sources of information about the EC they used, whether their country had benefited from being an EC member, and the extent of their personal interest in EC matters. Another major focus of the surveys was on the role of science and technology in modern life and on political priorities in public support for science and scientific research. Several questions centered on the portrayal of scientists on television. Questions about the European Parliament were expanded to include reactions to the European Parliamentary elections proposed for June 1978, expectations concerning the campaign, the future role of the European Parliament, and respondents' projected voting preference in the election. In addition to the survey itself, the ICPSR version of the study contains constructed indices on materialist/post-materialist values, left-right partisan vote, and cognitive mobilization (an indicator of an individual's potential to take an active role in the political process). This round of Euro-barometer surveys queried respondents on standard Euro-barometer measures such as public awareness of and attitudes toward the Common Market and the European Community (EC), and also focused on the role that consumer, science, and entertainment issues play in the lives of residents of the European Community. Respondents were asked to describe their television viewing habits and to comment on whether they watched programs broadcast by satellite. Their interest in a 24-hour European news channel and their receptivity to purchasing and using HDTV (high definition television) technology were also probed. In addition, participants in this Euro-barometer were asked a series of questions on consumer protection issues. They reported on topics such as recent European Community initiatives on product safety, labeling, and consumer credit, the problems they experienced as consumers over the last 12 months, what action they took if they wished to lodge a formal complaint, where they would turn for information on purchasing/selling products directly, their opinion regarding the uniformity of consumer protection policies across the Community, their level of satisfaction with current practices on the packaging and labeling of foodstuffs, and their knowledge of preservatives, additives, and colorings used in food products. Respondents also described their recent travel experiences, their use of products and services while traveling, and their opinions regarding the level of safety of these products and services as compared to those found in their own countries. Other questions focused on recent issues in the news of interest to respondents and which professions they respected the most. A final battery of questions probed attitudes toward science and technology issues: how informed respondents were in general, the sources of their information, recent visits to zoos, museums, and cultural institutions, opinions as to which subjects were "scientific" and which were not, and knowledge of scientific methods of investigation and the importance of science and technology in their lives. Finally, they were asked about the role the European Community plays in scientific research and how effective Community countries were in the promotion of science and technologies as compared with Japan and the United States. As in previous Euro-Barometers, information was gathered on family income, number of people residing in the home, size of locality, region of residence, occupation of the head of household, and the respondent's age, sex, education, religion, subject social class standing, socio-professional status, and left-right political self-placement.

In regard to the internal market, opinions were collected on the frequency of online purchases, technology used to make orders, types of goods purchased, problems experienced with online shopping, reasons why respondents do not purchase products online from other EU member states and distrust of online retailers. Respondents were asked if they were ever employed in an European state other than their home country and ways to assess quality of professional service providers. In queries on cultural activities, the frequency in which respondents visit museums, the cinema, public libraries in their home country and other EU countries were recorded as well as why they did not participate in cultural activities. Respondents were also asked if they participated in expressive arts such as dancing, writing poems, handicrafts, or playing musical instruments. In regard to non-urban road tolls respondents are polled on the frequency in which they use roads outside of cities, the quality and amount of congestion on those roads, purpose for using those roads. Opinions were collected on whether the government should spend more money on roads and their willingness to pay higher tolls. In the science and technology section, there are questions about interests in and knowledge of developments in science and technology, whether family members have formal credentials in science and technology, their source of information about the latest developments. Additionally, respondents were asked about the usefulness of science and technology. Lastly as it relates to undeclared work in the European Union respondents were asked if they know people who do not declare income, their awareness of the risk of getting caught, the consequences of getting caught and opinions on reasons for doing undeclared work.

National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) (ICPSR 36032)

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students in elementary and secondary schools in the United States know and can do in various subject areas. Assessments are conducted periodically in mathematics, reading, science, writing, the arts, civics, economics, geography, United States history, and beginning in 2014, in Technology and Engineering Literacy (TEL). Since NAEP assessments are administered uniformly using the same sets of test booklets across the United States, NAEP results serve as a common metric for all states and selected urban districts. The assessment stays essentially the same from year to year, with only carefully documented changes. This permits NAEP to provide a clear picture of student academic progress over time and for teachers, principals, parents, policymakers, and researchers to use NAEP results to assess progress and develop ways to improve education in the United States. There are two types of assessments: main NAEP and long-term trend NAEP. Main NAEP is administered to fourth-, eighth-, and twelfth-graders across the United States in a variety of subjects. The Main NAEP is conducted between the last week of January and the first week in March every year. National results are available for all assessments and subjects. Results for states and select urban districts are available in some subjects for grades 4 and 8. The Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA) is a special project developed to determine the feasibility of reporting district-level NAEP results for large urban districts. In 2009 a trial state assessment was administered at grade 12. Long-term trend NAEP is administered nationally every four years. During the same academic year, 13-year-olds are assessed in the fall, 9-year-olds in the winter, and 17-year-olds in the spring. Long-term trend assessments measure student performance in mathematics and reading, and allow the performance of students from recent time periods to be compared with students since the early 1970s.

For example, the 1997 and 2008 NAEP arts assessments were part of the Main NAEP Assessments. The NAEP 1997 Arts Assessment was conducted nationally at grade 8. For music and visual arts, representative samples of public and nonpublic school students were assessed. A special "targeted" sample of students took the theatre assessment. Schools offering at least 44 classroom hours of a theatre course per semester, and offering courses including more than the history or literature of theatre, were identified. Students attending those schools who had accumulated 30 hours of theatre classes by the end of the 1996-97 school year were selected to take the theatre assessment. The NAEP 2008 Arts Assessment was administered to a nationally representative sample of 7,900 eighth-grade public and private school students. Approximately one-half of these students were assessed in music, and the other half were assessed in visual arts. The music portion of the assessment measured students' ability to respond to music in various ways. Students were asked to analyze and describe aspects of music they heard, critique instrumental and vocal performances, and demonstrate their knowledge of standard musical notation and music's role in society. The visual arts portion of the assessment included questions that measured students' ability to respond to art as well as questions that measured their ability to create art. Responding questions asked students to analyze and describe works of art and design. For example, students were asked to describe specific differences in how certain parts of an artist's self-portrait were drawn. Creating questions required students to create works of art and design of their own. For example, students were asked to create a self-portrait that was scored for identifying detail, compositional elements, and use of materials.

Most recently, in 2016, a total of 8,800 eighth-graders in the nation's public and private schools responded to and critiqued existing works of music and visual art and created their own original artwork. NCES collected and analyzed the data and released the 2016 report highlighting key findings. Average music and visual arts responding scores are reported separately on a scale of 0 to 300 points. Average creating scores for visual arts are reported on a scale of 0 to 100 percent. Results are also reported by student groups, school type, and region, as well as in comparison to the 2008 assessment.

Chicago Longitudinal Study, 1986-1989 (ICPSR 25921)

The Chicago Longitudinal Study investigates the educational and social development of a same-age cohort of 1,539 low-income, minority children (93 percent African American) who grew up in high-poverty neighborhoods in central-city Chicago and attended government-funded kindergarten programs in the Chicago Public Schools in 1985-1986. Children were at risk of poor outcomes because they face social-environmental disadvantages including neighborhood poverty, family low-income status, and other economic and educational hardships.

Study Goals

The CLS is guided by four major goals:

  1. To document patterns of school performance and social competence throughout the school-age years, including their school achievement and attitudes, academic progress, and psychosocial development.
  2. To evaluate the effects of the Child-Parent Center and Expansion Program on child and youth development. Children and families had the opportunity to participate in this unique Head Start type early childhood intervention from ages three to nine (preschool to third grade).
  3. To identify and better understand the educational and psychosocial pathways through which the effects of early childhood experiences are manifested, and more generally, through which scholastic and behavioral development proceeds.
  4. To investigate the contributions to children's educational and social development of a variety of personal, family, school, and community factors, especially those that can be altered by program or policy interventions to prevent learning difficulties and promote positive outcomes.

Studies addressing the first two goals have been reported extensively. Participation in the Child-Parent Center Program for different lengths of time, for example, has been found to be significantly associated with higher levels of school achievement into adolescence, with higher levels of consumer skills, with enhanced parent involvement in children's education, and with lower rates of grade retention and special education, lower rates of early school dropout, and with lower rates of delinquent behavior (Reynolds, 1994, 1995, 2000; Reynolds and Temple, 1995, 1998; Temple, Reynolds, and Miedel, in press). Children's patterns of school and social adjustment over time (Reynolds and Bezruczko, 1993; Reynolds and Gill, 1994; Reynolds, 2000) as well as several methodological contributions (Reynolds and Temple, 1995; Reynolds, 1998a, 1998b) also have been reported elsewhere. Examples of studies addressing goals three and four are reported in a special issue of the Journal of School Psychology (Reynolds, 1999).

The Chicago Longitudinal Study is particularly appropriate for addressing these and other goals for two reasons. First, the CLS is one of the most extensive and comprehensive studies undertaken of a low-income, urban sample. Data were collected beginning during children's preschool years and have continued on a yearly basis throughout the school-age years. Multiple sources of data have been utilized in this on-going study, including teacher surveys, child surveys and interviews, parent surveys and interviews, school administrative records, standardized tests, and classroom observations. Thus, the impact of a variety of individual, family, and school-related factors can be investigated.

A second unique feature of the CLS is that although the project concerns child development, an emphasis is given to factors and experiences that are alterable by program or policy intervention both within and outside of schools. Besides information on early childhood intervention, information has been collected on classroom adjustment, parent involvement and parenting practices, grade retention and special education placement, school mobility, educational expectations of children, teachers, and parents, and on the school learning environment.

The General Social Surveys (GSS) were designed as part of a data diffusion project in 1972. The GSS replicated questionnaire items and wording in order to facilitate time-trend studies. The latest survey, GSS 2012, includes a cumulative file that merges all 29 General Social Surveys into a single file containing data from 1972 to 2012. The items appearing in the surveys are one of three types: Permanent questions that occur on each survey, rotating questions that appear on two out of every three surveys (1973, 1974, and 1976, or 1973, 1975, and 1976), and a few occasional questions such as split ballot experiments that occur in a single survey. The 2012 surveys included seven topic modules: Jewish identity, generosity, workplace violence, science, skin tone, and modules for experimental and miscellaneous questions. The International Social Survey Program (ISSP) module included in the 2012 survey was gender. The data also contain several variables describing the demographic characteristics of the respondents.

The International Social Survey Program (ISSP) is an ongoing program of crossnational collaboration. Formed in 1983, the group develops topical modules dealing with important areas of social science as supplements to regular national surveys. This collection contains data from Bulgaria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Germany (East and West), Great Britain, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Norway, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, and the United States. Respondents were asked to comment on various topics regarding nature and the environment, including the role of science and scientific solutions to environmental problems, protection of the environment through higher prices of goods or higher taxes, and health issues like exposure to radiation and pollution. In addition, respondents were asked to estimate the effects of nuclear power stations, industrial air pollution, and pesticides used in farming on themselves, their families, and the environment. Additional information was elicited regarding measures respondents were taking to protect the environment, such as whether they drove, recycled, ate meat, lowered the heat when out (during the winter), and turned off lights when leaving a room. Demographic variables include respondent's gender, age, marital status, religion, and party affiliation, as well as education and occupation of the respondent and the respondent's parents and steady life-partner.

The International Social Survey Program (ISSP) is an ongoing program of cross-national collaboration. This data collection is the second survey exploring the topic of environment. Participating countries in the 2000 survey included Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Latvia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Norway, Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. Respondents were queried on topics regarding nature and the environment, the role of science and scientific solutions to environmental problems, the effects of population and economic growth on the environment, protection of the environment through higher prices of goods or higher taxes, and the role of government, businesses, industries, and citizens in protecting the environment. Respondents were asked if they belonged to any groups whose main aim was to preserve or protect the environment, if they donated any money to environmental groups, and if they had ever protested, demonstrated, or signed a petition concerning environmental issues. Respondents were also asked questions about the greenhouse effect, the use of animals for medical testing, and health issues like exposure to chemicals, pesticides, and pollution. Respondents also expressed their views on the priorities of their nation. Demographics include sex, age, ethnicity or nationality, marital status, level of education, current employment status, family income, number of people living in household, religious denomination, trade union membership, political party affiliation, and region of the country and size of community where currently residing.

The International Curriculum Analysis (ICA) study provided curricular and textbook information from each country participating in the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). TIMSS was a comparative study of education in mathematics and the sciences conducted in over 40 countries on five continents. The goal of TIMSS was to measure student achievement in mathematics and science in participating countries and to assess some of the curricular and classroom factors that are related to student learning in these subjects. The study was intended to provide educators and policy makers with an unparalleled and multidimensional perspective on mathematics and science curricula; their implementation; the nature of student performance in mathematics and science; and the social, economic, and educational context in which these occur.

Below is a description of each of the types of data files found in this study.

The Textbook Specific and Curriculum Guide Specific data files contain overall characteristic information, the number of pages, size of book, publisher, etc. pertaining to material used within a country for all countries involved in the study.

The General Topic Trace Mapping data files contain questionnaire responses for each specific science and mathematics topic for each grade.

The Document Description data file contains document ID, name, subject, publisher and publishing data for each document provided by each country in the study.

The Unit Level data files contain information describing a specific unit within a document, used for both textbooks and curriculum guides.

The Block Level data files contain specific curricular information about the blocks contained within each unit.

The Textbook Coverage data files contain summaries of context coverage for each country's textbooks and the performance expectation codes of those textbooks, both Mathematics and Science. The coverage rate for each content topic is expressed as the average percent that particular topic is mentioned in each of the country's textbooks.

The Textbook Characteristics data file contains derived variables from 400 textbooks used in 45 countries. The variables captures the frequency with which content material such as activities, exercise or question sets, instructional narratives and other instructional tools, as well as performance expectation related material are found within these textbooks.

The Eurobarometer series is a unique cross-national and cross-temporal survey program conducted on behalf of the European Commission. These surveys regularly monitor public opinion in the European Union (EU) member countries and consist of standard modules and special topic modules. The standard modules address attitudes towards European unification, institutions and policies, measurements for general socio-political orientations, as well as respondent and household demographics. The special topic modules address such topics as agriculture, education, natural environment and resources, public health, public safety and crime, and science and technology.

This round of Eurobarometer surveys covers: (1) knowledge, opinions of, policies, and values of the European Parliament (EP); (2) biotechnology; (3) science and technology. Technology questions pertain to knowledge, opinions, and effects of genetically modified food, nanotechnology, animal clothing, synthetic biology, and biobanks emerging in the next 20 years, as well as opinions on regenerative medicine, including stem cell research, resistance genes, bio-fuels, and global warming. Other questions address interest in, knowledge of, and engagement with science and technology, collaborative research across Europe funded by the EU, level of EU investment in research, young people's interest in science, and women's representation in scientific professions.

Demographic and other background information collected includes age, gender, nationality, marital status, age when stopped full-time education, occupation, left-right political self-placement, political party attachment, household composition, religious affiliation and participation, ownership of a fixed or a mobile telephone and other durable goods, difficulties paying bills, level in society, and Internet use. In addition, country-specific data includes type and size of locality, region of residence, and language of interview (select countries).

This round of Eurobarometer surveys, which diverged from the standard topics, focused on respondents' views of science and technology, the Internet, agriculture, and the single European currency, the euro. Respondents were asked to identify the scientific and technological developments in which they were most interested and to rank a number of information sources in their importance as sources of information about science and technology. They were asked if they had visited a museum of science and technology or another type of public museum in the past 12 months and how they would rate a variety of subjects, including such fields as biology, history, and astrology, in terms of whether or not they were scientific. A number of factual questions drawn from various scientific areas were posed, and respondents also gave their opinions on several other topics, including mad cow disease, genetically engineered food, how a drug should be tested for effectiveness, and the role of science and technology in safeguarding the environment and improving life in general. Other items measured respondents' level of trust in science, respondents' views on the role science and technology should have in improving the economy, and the potential benefits or harmful effects of science. Respondents also expressed their views on the role of ethics and responsibility in scientific research, who should be blamed for the mad cow disease problem and how such problems should be prevented. Other items elicited respondents' views on media coverage of scientific and technological topics, their levels of trust in and regard for various professions, the possible reasons for a declining interest in scientific careers among European young people, and the potential effects of that decline. The European Union (EU) was a focus of several questions, including which policy areas respondents believed the EU was active in, which it should be active in, and whether respondents supported research at the European, as opposed to the national, level. They also answered a number of questions designed to elicit their opinions on the current state of European research and how it could be improved. Respondents were asked to give their views on the EU agriculture policy, such as what its purpose was, what its purpose should be, and whether it had been effective in achieving its purpose. Further questions focused on the euro, including respondents' level of interest in the euro, how well informed they believed they were about the euro, and other questions designed to gauge their general knowledge of the euro. Respondents were asked whether they had used the euro before, if not, the reasons why, and their likelihood of using the euro in the future. Other items queried respondents about dual pricing in shops where prices in both the euro and national currency were displayed and the impending changeover from national currencies to the euro. An additional set of questions focused on the Internet. Respondents stated whether they used the Internet, and if so, where. If they did not use the Internet, respondents were asked to state the reasons why, and how they could be encouraged to use it. Respondents also described any computer training they had received, and the sorts of information they would like to find on the Internet. Finally, respondents who used the Internet were asked to identify the ways the Internet had changed their daily lives and, if they did not use the Internet, the ways in which they expected the Internet to change their daily lives. Demographic data on respondents includes nationality, political affiliation, marital status, education, gender, age, occupation, and income.

This round of Eurobarometer surveys diverged from the standard Eurobarometer measures and queried respondents on their opinions regarding science and technology, social values, and services of general interest. Questions concerning the first topic focused on the respondents' attitudes toward science and technology issues including what areas they were most interested, how informed respondents were in general, and recent visits to a museum of science and technology or another type of public museum. Other questions measured respondents' level of trust in science, their views on the role science and technology should have in improving the economy, the potential benefits or harmful effects of science, and the role the European Community plays in scientific research. Another topic covered was social values in relation to science and technology. Respondents were asked how often they thought about the meaning and purpose of life, about their spiritual beliefs, what kind of family they grew up in, how often they trusted other people, how satisfied they were with their lives, whether a university education is more important for a man than for a woman, and whether men make better political leaders than women. The surveys also solicited respondents' opinions with respect to developing technologies (including solar energy, biotechnology, genetic engineering, the Internet, nanotechnology), and possible applications of science and technology over the next 20 years (such as cloning monkeys or pigs for use in research into human diseases or cloning human beings so that couples can have a baby even when one partner has a genetic disease). Respondents were queried on their opinions about humanity's relationship to nature, what decisions about science and technology should be based primarily on, how important they thought science and technology would be for their society in ten years' time, and if what those who are involved in science and technology do has a positive effect on society. Finally, the topic of services of general interest (such as electricity, natural gas, fixed telephone, mobile phone, postal services, local transport, rail transport, and air transport) included questions regarding satisfaction with the provision of services, accessibility, fairness in pricing, quality of service, and customer service. Background information collected includes respondent age, gender, nationality, marital status, left-right political self-placement, occupation, age at completion of education, household composition, telephone equipment, religion, and region of residence.

ABC News Discovery Space Poll, July 1997 (ICPSR 2500)

This special topic poll sought respondents' views on the United States space exploration program, specifically the exploration of Mars. Respondents were asked about the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the government budget for the space program, benefits of the space program, the $250 million price tag of the Mars project, and the possibility of sending astronauts to Mars. They were also asked to assess their interest in national politics, science, business, sports, international events, celebrities and entertainment, and local issues, and to assess further their interest in the scientific topics of space exploration, computers, cloning, natural disasters, dinosaurs, the origin of humans, genetic engineering, weapon and military technology, the human brain, medical advances, and scientific methods for solving crimes. Those queried were asked which media sources they consulted for scientific news and whether they believed in the existence of intelligent life in outer space. The results of the poll were announced on the Discovery Channel. Background information on respondents includes age and sex.

National Science Foundation Surveys of Public Attitudes Toward and Understanding of Science and Technology, 1979-2001: [United States] (ICPSR 4029)

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Surveys of Public Attitudes monitored the general public's attitudes toward and interest in science and technology. In addition, the survey assessed levels of literacy and understanding of scientific and environmental concepts and constructs, how scientific knowledge and information were acquired, attentiveness to public policy issues, and computer access and usage. Since 1979, the survey was administered at regular intervals (occurring every two or three years), producing 11 cross-sectional surveys through 2001. Data for Part 1 (Survey of Public Attitudes Multiple Wave Data) were comprised of the survey questionnaire items asked most often throughout the 22-year survey series and account for approximately 70 percent of the original questions asked. Data for Part 2, General Social Survey Subsample Data, combine the 1983-1999 Survey of Public Attitudes data with a subsample from the 2002 General Social Survey (GSS) (GENERAL SOCIAL SURVEYS, 1972-2002: [CUMULATIVE FILE] [ICPSR 3728]) and focus solely on levels of education and computer access and usage. Variables for Part 1 include the respondents' interest in new scientific or medical discoveries and inventions, space exploration, military and defense policies, whether they voted in a recent election, if they had ever contacted an elected or public official about topics regarding science, energy, defense, civil rights, foreign policy, or general economics, and how they felt about government spending on scientific research. Respondents were asked how they received information concerning science or news (e.g., via newspapers, magazines, or television), what types of television programming they watched, and what kind of magazines they read. Respondents were asked a series of questions to assess their understanding of scientific concepts like DNA, probability, and experimental methods. Respondents were also asked if they agreed with statements concerning science and technology and how they affect everyday living. Respondents were further asked a series of true and false questions regarding science-based statements (e.g., the center of the Earth is hot, all radioactivity is manmade, electrons are smaller than atoms, the Earth moves around the sun, humans and dinosaurs co-existed, and human beings developed from earlier species of animals). Variables for Part 2 include highest level of math attained in high school, whether the respondent had a postsecondary degree, field of highest degree, number of science-based college courses taken, major in college, household ownership of a computer, access to the World Wide Web, number of hours spent on a computer at home or at work, and topics searched for via the Internet. Demographic variables for Parts 1 and 2 include gender, race, age, marital status, number of people in household, level of education, and occupation.

The goal of the ICSOPRU project was to improve the management of research teams and institutions and increase awareness of their responsibility concerning proper application of research results. Concrete objectives were twofold: (1) on the international level, to make widely available comparable facts and experiences concerning the management of research teams and to promote multilateral as well as bilateral cooperation in this field, and (2) on the national level to provide all those concerned (science policy-makers, research managers, scientists, engineers) with substantive information on the state of their national research potential and to encourage them, on the basis of this information compared eventually with similar information from other countries, to take self-corrective actions as needed to improve the level of effectiveness and productivity of the research teams and institutions. Seventeen countries from Africa, the Arab States, Asia, Europe and Latin America took part in ICSOPRU. There were four stages or rounds of data collection: six countries (Austria, Belgium, Finland, Hungary, Poland, Sweden) in Round 1 (between February and September 1974), six countries (Argentina, Egypt, India, Republic of Korea [South], Poland, Ukrainian S.S.R.) in Round 2 (between June 1978 and September 1981), five countries (Brazil, India, Nigeria, Spain, Ukrainian S.S.R.) in Round 3 (between October 1981 and November 1985), and four countries (China, Ghana, Hungary, Mexico) in Round 4 (between May 1985 and June 1987). Each round of questionnaires had different items (except for Rounds 2 and 3 which were the same). Round 1 items included general administrative information relevant to the research units answered by the administrator of the unit, scientific information on the research unit and information relevant to the unit's head answered by the head of the unit, individual information answered by scientists and engineers of the unit, individual information answered by technicians of the unit, and external evaluation of the research units from various scientific and administrative perspectives answered by external evaluators. Rounds 2 and 3 included general information about the research unit answered by the head of the unit, information on the respondent and his or her evaluation of the research unit's management, items on productivity and effectiveness answered by head of the unit along with scientists, engineers, and technicians of the unit, EV-rating of the research unit's effectiveness on a series of dimensions dealing with scientific or social criteria and administrative criteria answered by external evaluators. The fourth round of questionnaires included information on the institutional environment of the research unit answered by the head of the institution, general information on the research unit answered by the head of the unit, information on the respondent and his or her evaluation of the research unit's management, items on productivity and effectiveness answered by the head of the unit, scientists, engineers, and technicians.

The Candidate Countries Eurobarometer (CCEB) series, first conducted in 2001, gathers information from the countries applying to become members of the European Union (EU) in a way that allows direct comparison with the standard Eurobarometer series carried out in the existing EU countries. The CCEB provides decision-makers and the European public with opinion data on the similarities and differences between the EU and the candidate countries. The CCEB continuously tracks support for EU membership in each country and records changes in attitudes related to European issues in the candidate countries. This round of the CCEB surveys was conducted between October 16 and November 17, 2002, in the 13 candidate countries: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Turkey. Respondents were queried on how interested and informed they were about science and technology, sports, politics, economics and finance, and culture, which professions they held in high regard (e.g., judges, medical doctors, politicians, or scientists), and who they would trust to explain the reasons for a major disaster (e.g., scientists, journalists, or government representatives). Respondents were asked which scientific and technological developments interested them most (e.g., medicine, genetics, astronomy and space, or the Internet), how scientific they felt certain subjects were, such as biology, history, economics, mathematics, or sociology, and whether they understood certain concepts and phenomena as reported in the newspapers and on the television, like air pollution, global warning, the greenhouse effect, holes in the ozone layer, nanotechnologies, and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE or mad cow disease). Respondents were further asked a series of true and false questions regarding science-based statements (e.g., the center of the Earth is hot, radioactive milk can be safe if boiled, electrons are smaller than atoms, the Sun goes around the Earth, and human beings developed from earlier species of animals). Respondents were also asked if they agreed with statements concerning science and technology and how science and technology affected or will affect everyday living, the environment, industrial development, and the fight to cure illnesses. Respondents were further questioned on whether they agreed with statements concerning ethical standards, genetically modified food, the way in which the media reported on science and technology, and the responsibility of scientists, politicians, farmers, and the food industry in relation to mad cow disease. The survey also addressed policy areas in which the EU should or should not be active (e.g., agriculture, environment, international trade, foreign affairs, defense, energy, consumer protection, employment and social affairs, and regional development), as well as how research carried out at the national level compared to research at the EU level and whether the respondent agreed with a series of statements regarding important scientific and technological developments (i.e., the Internet and biotechnology) originating outside of Europe. Demographic variables include sex, age, nationality, marital status, level of education, current occupation, income, whether the respondent lived in a rural area or village, small or middle sized town, or large town, religious affiliation, and voting intent.

Science and Technology-Based Economic Development Programs [United States]: A Study of Evaluation Efforts, 1996 (ICPSR 2591)

This 1996 mail survey was conducted to gather comprehensive information on performance measurement activities in state science and technology-based (S&T) programs, and on the perspectives and motivation of program managers in regard to performance measurement activities. Surveys were sent to the program directors of 75 programs in 50 states. Responses were received from 44 programs, representing 38 states. The survey was designed to gather data on both existing and planned evaluation and performance measurement activities. The survey covered three major areas: organizational information, evaluation activities of the organizations, and the use of evaluation findings. Questions soliciting organizational information included items on organization description, staff size, history, budget, funding sources, and primary audience served by the organization. Questions on evaluation activities addressed the type of descriptive information sought through assessment, methods for the collection of such data, reasons why performance is assessed, and knowledge of state requirements for the collection of performance data. Finally, a series of questions focused on use issues, specifically the organizational changes that resulted from performance measurement findings.

This data collection is part of a continuing series of semi-monthly surveys of individuals in Spain. Each survey consists of three sections. The first section collects information on respondents' attitudes regarding personal and national issues. This section includes questions on level of life satisfaction and frequency of relationships, as well as a rating of the importance of national issues. The second section varies according to the monthly topic, with this survey's topic focusing on attitudes towards science and technology. Among the issues investigated are the respondent's interest in science and technology, perceived effects of technology on workers and firms, social image of scientists compared with that of other professionals, the respondent's opinion on the positive and negative effects of scientific discovery and on animal testing, perception of the origin of new technology, and expectations with respect to scientific and technological developments. The third section collects demographic data such as sex, age, religion, income, and place of residence.

This study contains data on the use of the news media by 1,919 adults in the United States in 1957 and their attitudes toward science and scientists. Closed and open-ended questions were asked to explore the role of the mass media in informing the public about developments in science, as well as respondents' use of newspapers, magazines, radio, and television, and the programs of interest to them. Additional questions explored respondents' use of the media as a source of scientific information, their assessments of the medium that provided a major source of their entertainment, news, and science information, their attitudes toward science and its effects on society, their understanding of the meaning of scientific studies, their opinions of the character of scientists and their freedom to engage in any kind of research, their concept of causality, and their views of earth satellites. Demographic variables include age, sex, race, education, marital status, family composition, religion, and group memberships. This study contains data from interviews with 384 scientists in the summer of 1967 on their attitudes, perceptions, opinions, and views on a range of scientific issues, as well as biographical and professional background information. Respondents were asked questions about working in an international laboratory, political issues on which the majority of scientists and engineers shared a common outlook, their nations' adoption of a unilateral nuclear disarmament position, the detente between the West and the European Communist countries, the proposed non-proliferation treaty, and the effects of international perspectives on issues and on their nations. Also elicited were respondents' views on a world government and the possible transformation of the United Nations (UN) into a world government, the possession of thermonuclear weapons by respondents' nations and by a future European military force, nuclear arms limitations, space exploration, and the chances for the United States or the Soviet Union to be the first to reach the moon. Demographic variables include respondents' place of birth, sex, nationality, marital status, occupation, education, international travels, languages spoken, and patterns of electoral participation in their nations.

This News Media Survey provides information on consumer media exposure and interests, exposure to and views about science, opinions about scientists and Russian science, and long-distance telephone usage over time. Variables explore respondents' exposure to various media, their use of the media as a source of scientific information, their attitudes toward science, and the effects of science on society, their opinions of the character of scientists and the comparative quality of Russian and United States science, and the extent and quality of respondents' information about earth satellites. Other variables present information on the effects of the recession on respondents' families, their financial assets relative to the previous year, and their air travel. Demographic variables provide information on age, sex, race, marital status, education, occupation, religion, family size, and family income.
