The Citation Recency Bias: Rethinking Temporal Standards in Literature Review Practices (ICPSR 308976)

Abstract

This position paper critiques the widespread assumption that literature reviews should prioritize recent sources, often operationalized as a “5-year rule” in academic writing. While recency is valuable for capturing current developments, this practice may inadvertently exclude foundational theories and methodological principles that remain conceptually relevant. To address this issue, the paper introduces Citation Recency Bias, defined as the tendency to privilege newer sources based primarily on temporal proximity rather than functional relevance. Drawing on enduring contributions in research methodology and educational psychology, including measurement theory (Stevens, 1946), reliability estimation through Cronbach’s coefficient alpha (1951), statistical frameworks developed by Fisher (1925) and Cohen (1988), and foundational theories proposed by Bandura (1977) and Vygotsky (1978), the paper argues that many core elements of contemporary scholarship continue to rely on earlier works. Citation Recency Bias is therefore conceptualized as a methodological distortion that may weaken theoretical grounding and conceptual coherence when the publication date is treated as an indicator of scholarly value.

The Categorical Ceiling Tax: Interpreting Intervention Outcomes in Educational Research (ICPSR 309013)

Abstract

This position paper formalizes the concept of the Categorical Ceiling Tax (CCT), an interpretive limitation observed in intervention studies that employ quantitative scoring rubrics to classify proficiency levels. The CCT describes a form of structural resistance that occurs when a population mean approaches, but does not cross, a predefined categorical threshold, even when measurable quantitative gains are documented. Using pre–post score data from a one-group design involving the total population of N = 494 Grade 7 students, this paper illustrates how categorical reporting obscured a documented positive mean shift (Δx̅ = +0.20), while the population classification remained at the “Instructional” level. This paper argues that categorical transitions, when interpreted independently, may misrepresent population-level progress in large samples. It further proposes that changes in the deficiency floor—defined as the proportion of learners classified at the Frustration level—be reported as a complementary interpretive indicator alongside categorical outcomes. These observations provide applied insights into the interpretation of outcomes generated through technology-supported assessment and reporting systems commonly used in contemporary educational settings.

Mobile Game Addiction and Academic Achievement among Senior High School Students: A Convergent Mixed-Methods Study in a Philippine Public School (ICPSR 309017)

Abstract

This study employed a Convergent Mixed-Methods Design to examine how mobile gaming influences students’ behaviour, study habits, physical well-being, and academic obligations within a senior high school educational context. The quantitative component involved 58 Grade 11 students from Section X in the Philippines who answered a 10-item Likert-scale survey assessing gaming habits, academic distractions, sleep problems, physical symptoms, and coping strategies. Data were analyzed using weighted means, frequency distributions, and Pearson’s correlations. The qualitative component consisted of semi-structured interviews with ten purposively selected participants. The thematic analysis revealed three major themes: (1) gaming for enjoyment and escape, (2) physical discomfort and sleep loss, and (3) difficulty managing academic responsibilities alongside failed attempts at self-regulation. Findings indicated that greater gaming involvement was associated with reduced focus, sleep deprivation, decreased motivation, and neglect of academic tasks. Quantitative results revealed a moderate negative relationship between mobile game addiction and academic performance (r = −.52, p < .001). Qualitative narratives further explained how sleep loss, cognitive fatigue, and reinforcement-driven habits contributed to academic disengagement despite students’ awareness of negative consequences. The study highlights the importance of digital literacy programs, structured guidance interventions, and school-based strategies that promote responsible gaming habits and academic self-regulation among learners.

Effects of Instructional Message Tone on Student Participation in Philippine Online Learning: A Quasi-Experimental Study (ICPSR 308844)

This study examined the association between invitation message tone and student participation in digitally mediated learning environments. Using a field-based quasi-experimental design, 40 students in the Philippines were assigned through an alternating allocation procedure to receive either a formal, context-rich invitation or a brief informal message directing them to the same online task. Participation was measured at the individual level through link activation, task completion, and response timing using automated digital tracking. Results showed higher completion rates and faster response patterns in the formal message condition. Completion reached 100% in the formal condition compared to 50% in the informal condition (χ²(1, N = 40) = 13.33, p < .001, V = .58). These findings show that message structure is associated with how learners respond to academic requests in digitally mediated environments. While limited by a small sample size and context-specific design, the study provides applied evidence consistent with principles of transactional distance and teaching presence. The findings suggest that low-effort improvements in communication design may support participation in asynchronous open and distance learning systems.

National Research Mentoring Network Studies, Phase II: Multi-Study Common Measures Data, United States, 2019-2024 (ICPSR 39676)

The National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN), an initiative supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Common Fund, was established to support the career development of individuals from diverse backgrounds in biomedical research, with a focus on mentorship and professional development. In its first phase (2014-2019), the NRMN built a network of mentors and mentees from a variety of disciplines, with over 10,000 individuals including more than 7,000 mentors and mentees engaged in research mentorship training or grantsmanship coaching. Phase II (launched in 2019) built on this foundation and focused on investigating longer-term outcomes and studying mentorship interventions. This phase reimagined the NRMN as a consortium consisting of one coordination center (the NRMN Coordination Center), a resource center (the NRMN Resource Center) and 11 independent research studies that focused on mentorship, career development, and professional networking. These studies shared a common goal of exploring how specific mentorship practices influence career outcomes for diverse groups in biomedical research.

The multi-study common measures dataset of NRMN contains data collected using common measures across 10 of the 11 independent research studies conducted under NRMN Phase II (2019-2024). Each study implemented mentorship and career development interventions specific to individuals from diverse backgrounds, career stages, and fields in biomedical research. While study designs and populations varied, all agreed to collect data using a set of community-identified common measures. The common measures dataset was compiled using codebooks and documentation provided by study teams. Where full survey instruments were unavailable, variables were mapped from available materials and cross-checked for consistency. This dataset supports research on mentorship, professional development, and career outcomes in biomedical research.

Organizations that fund cancer research need to decide which studies to fund. Value of information (VOI) is a way to help rank research studies. VOI estimates the value of research by looking at the impacts on health and on healthcare that could result from the research.

SWOG (formerly the Southwest Oncology Group) is a network of cancer researchers funded by the National Cancer Institute. SWOG leaders review and score new study proposals based on the scientific value of the studies and their potential impact. Based on a study's score, SWOG's leadership committee decides whether to send the study to the National Cancer Institute for funding review.

In this study, the research team wanted to learn if giving VOI data to the committee affected its scoring of proposals. The team also wanted to see if providing VOI data was helpful in deciding which studies to fund. The study had two parts. The research team created a process to quickly estimate VOI. Then, the team tested the process on nine study proposals that the SWOG committee reviewed.

Qualitative health data are rarely shared in the United States. The U.S. qualitative researchers (N = 425) were surveyed on the barriers and facilitators of sharing qualitative health or sensitive research data. Most researchers (96%) have never shared qualitative data in a repository. Primary concerns were lack of participant permission to share data, data sensitivity, and breaching trust. Willingness to share would increase if participants agreed and if sharing increased the societal impact of their research. Key resources to increase willingness to share were funding, guidance, and de-identification assistance. Public health and biomedical researchers were most willing to share.

MICA sought to improve understanding of the data curation process, secondary data usage, and the relationships between the two. The MICA datasets connect records for each of ICPSR's archived research studies to the research publications that use them and related curation activities available for a subset of studies. The datasets are organized around studies and papers as primary entities. Community-engaged research is an umbrella term for forms of research that have community and stakeholder engagement as a core principle, for example, patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR), participatory action research, and community-based participatory research. Adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) face significant physical and mental health disparities. Ethical challenges may discourage their inclusion in research and hinder scientific advancements to reduce these health disparities. Five core groups are adults with ID, individuals who provide informal support to adults with ID, individuals who provide services to adults with ID, ID researchers, and Institutional Review Board (IRB) members. Little is known about these stakeholders' opinions on how to ethically include adults with ID in research. Increasing this knowledge base, especially by inviting input from groups whose opinions are rarely examined, is critical to helping the scientific community devise and deploy sensitive and responsive practices and encouraging research to reduce pressing disparities.

The research's long-term goal is to encourage science that is sensitive to the ethical and social dimensions of research with adults with ID and more inclusive of this population. The research's aim was to qualitatively study the views of adults with ID, persons who provide informal support to adults with ID, and persons who provide services to adults with ID on the participation of adults with ID in self-report research. The focus on self-report research that aims to study the thoughts and experiences of adults with intellectual disability reflects the field's increased emphasis on direct representation in such research and the less clear risks this research may bear.

The Dimensions of School Discipline: Toward a Comprehensive Framework for Measuring Discipline Patterns and Outcomes in Schools (ICPSR 161781)

The school discipline literature has expanded rapidly in recent decades, yet the conceptualization and measurement of school discipline patterns remains overlooked. In this paper, we present a comprehensive analytic framework to examine school discipline patterns that encompasses school-level metrics that capture the prevalence and disparity in exclusionary discipline and regression-based approaches that examine the likelihood that students experience exclusionary discipline. We apply the framework to New York City and, based on school-level metrics, find that Black students have the highest prevalence and the highest disproportionality. Results from the regression models affirm that Black students are most likely to receive office discipline referrals (ODRs) and suspensions and experience differential processing of suspensions for similar categories of infractions. The findings illustrate the nuances of the disciplinary process in schools and inform the consideration of a range of available analytic tools that educational stakeholders may employ to better measure and understand exclusionary discipline.

This collection includes 10 focus group transcripts conducted with participants in Geisinger Health System's MyCode Community Health Initiative, an unselected biobank. Geisinger is a large, integrated health system in central and northeast Pennsylvania. Focus groups were conducted at clinics throughout the system's catchment area. Focus group participants were asked to discuss their views of the appropriateness of using their clinical and genomic data to study several phenotypes, including social and behavioral phenotypes.

Precision and Disclosure in Text and Voice Interviews on Smartphones, United States, 2012 (ICPSR 37837)

As people increasingly communicate via asynchronous non-spoken modes on mobile devices, particularly text messaging (e.g., short message service (SMS)), longstanding assumptions and practices of social measurement via telephone survey interviewing are being challenged. This dataset contains 1,282 cases, 634 cases that completed an interview and 648 cases that were invited to participate, but did not start or complete an interview on their iPhone. Participants were randomly assigned to answer 32 questions from US social surveys via text messaging or speech, administered either by a human interviewer or by an automated interviewing system. 10 interviewers from the University of Michigan Survey Research Center administered voice and text interviews; automated systems launched parallel text and voice interviews at the same time as the human interviews were launched. The key question was how the interview mode affected the quality of the response data, in particular the precision of numerical answers (how many were not rounded), variation in answers to multiple questions with the same response scale (differentiation), and disclosure of socially undesirable information. Texting led to higher quality data--fewer rounded numerical answers, more differentiated answers to a battery of questions, and more disclosure of sensitive information--than voice interviews, both with human and automated interviewers. Text respondents also reported a strong preference for future interviews by text. The findings suggest that people interviewed on mobile devices at a time and place that is convenient for them, even when they are multitasking, can give more trustworthy and accurate answers than those in more traditional spoken interviews. The findings also suggest that answers from text interviews, when aggregated across a sample, can tell a different story about a population than answers from voice interviews, potentially altering the policy implications from a survey. Demographic variables include participants' gender, race, education level, and household income.

A web survey of the principal investigators of social science awards made by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) between 1985 and 2001. This was conducted by the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) from May 2009 to August 2009.

The survey explored both the barriers and motivations individuals face when thinking about sharing data with others in various ways and the effects of data sharing on research in the social sciences. The principal investigator survey consisted of questions about research data collected, various methods for sharing research data, attitudes about data sharing and demographic information.

Principal investigators were also asked about publications tied to the research project including information about their own publications, research team publications, and publications outside the research team. A total of 1,217 responses were received. After excluding principal investigators that did not collect primary research data and excluding principal investigators of dissertation awards, the final sample size is 1,021.

The purpose of this study is to examine the prevalence of police practitioner-research partnerships in the United States and examine the factors that prevent or facilitate development and sustainability of these partnerships. This study used a mixed method approach to examine the relationship between law enforcement in the United States and researchers. A nationally-representative sample of law enforcement agencies were randomly selected and given a survey in order to capture the prevalence of police practitioner-researcher partnerships and associated information. Then, representatives from 89 separate partnerships were interviewed, which were identified through the national survey. The primary purpose of these interviews was to gain insight into the barriers and facilitators of police and practitioner relationships as well as the benefits of this partnering. Lastly four case studies were conducted on model partnerships that were identified during interviews with practitioners and researchers.

With support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the goal of the Supporting Practice in the Arts, Research, and Curricula (SPARC) research project is to highlight the role of the arts in research universities and to support new modes of practice across the arts, research, curricula.

Using open-ended interviewee responses as the primary data source, combined with other sources of evidence and secondary research, the project explores the models, obstacles, implementation strategies, costs, and impact of arts-integrative practices on research, teaching, and promotion.

From 2012-2015, the Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities (a2ru) conducted a baseline data collection effort and study of 46 universities and including over 900 interviews. The goal was to discover the models, obstacles, implementation strategies, costs, and impact of arts integrative practices on research, teaching, and learning in higher education.

Following from the Phase I data collection, Phase II of SPARC Project (2015-2018) seeks to synthesize and disseminate the research findings.

This collection represents the fifth cycle of the US Faculty Survey conducted by Ithaka S+R in fall 2012. Investigators surveyed a random sample of higher education faculty members to learn about their attitudes and practices related to research, teaching, and communicating. The fifth cycle differs from previous releases in two significant regards: the questionnaire was developed with input from an advisory committee of academic professionals, and the methodology was revised to take advantage of online distribution and response collection. A web survey of the principal investigators of social science awards made by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) between 1985 and 2001 was conducted by the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) from May 2009 to August 2009. The survey explored both the barriers and motivations individuals face when thinking about sharing data with others in various ways and the effects of data sharing on research in the social sciences. The principal investigator survey consisted of questions about research data collected, various methods for sharing research data, attitudes about data sharing and demographic information. Principal investigators were also asked about publications tied to the research project including information about their own publications, research team publications, and publications outside the research team. A total of 1,217 responses were received. After excluding principal investigators that did not collect primary research data and excluding principal investigators of dissertation awards, the final sample size is 1,021.

In regard to the internal market, opinions were collected on the frequency of online purchases, technology used to make orders, types of goods purchased, problems experienced with online shopping, reasons why respondents do not purchase products online from other EU member states and distrust of online retailers. Respondents were asked if they were ever employed in an European state other than their home country and ways to assess quality of professional service providers. In queries on cultural activities, the frequency in which respondents visit museums, the cinema, public libraries in their home country and other EU countries were recorded as well as why they did not participate in cultural activities. Respondents were also asked if they participated in expressive arts such as dancing, writing poems, handicrafts, or playing musical instruments. In regard to non-urban road tolls respondents are polled on the frequency in which they use roads outside of cities, the quality and amount of congestion on those roads, purpose for using those roads. Opinions were collected on whether the government should spend more money on roads and their willingness to pay higher tolls. In the science and technology section, there are questions about interests in and knowledge of developments in science and technology, whether family members have formal credentials in science and technology, their source of information about the latest developments. Additionally, respondents were asked about the usefulness of science and technology. Lastly as it relates to undeclared work in the European Union respondents were asked if they know people who do not declare income, their awareness of the risk of getting caught, the consequences of getting caught and opinions on reasons for doing undeclared work.

The Institutional Data Archive on American Higher Education (IDA) contains academic data on 384 four-year colleges and universities in the United States. The IDA is one of two databases produced by the Colleges and Universities 2000 project based at the University of California, Riverside. This release, the third compilation of the IDA, is updated through academic year 2010-2011, and includes longitudinal and cross-sectional data from multiple sources. The collection is organized into nine datasets based on the unit of analysis and whether identifiers linking the data to particular institutions are present; seven of the datasets can be linked by a common identifier variable (PROJ_ID), and two cannot be linked due to confidentiality agreements. The seven identifiable datasets contain information on institutions, university systems, programs and academic departments, earned degrees, graduate schools, medical schools, and institutional academic rankings over time. Data regarding student enrollments, average SAT and ACT scores, and tuition and fees has been recorded, as well as institutional information concerning libraries, research activity, revenue and expenditures, faculty salaries, and quality rankings for program faculty. The identifiable datasets also include census information for neighborhoods surrounding IDA colleges and universities. The two non-identifiable datasets contain confidential survey responses from IDA institution presidents, chancellors, provosts, and academic vice presidents; survey questions pertained to governance structures, institutional goals and achievements, and solicited opinions on current and future issues facing the respondent's institution and higher education in general.

This study was conducted in order to contribute to community understanding of the attitudes and behaviors of higher education faculty members regarding online resources, the library, and related topics. This study, from 2006, builds upon similar studies performed in 2000 (by JSTOR) and 2003 (by Ithaka), and may be compared with data on many of the same topics gathered from librarians in 2006. This survey covers a wide range of topics, including the relationship between faculty and their campus library, faculty dependence on electronic scholarly resources for research and teaching, the transition from print to electronic for scholarly journals, faculty publishing preferences, e-books, digital institutional repositories, and the preservation of scholarly journals. Respondents were asked questions such as "How dependent would you say you are on your college or university library for research you conduct?" and "how many separate occasions have you used computer-based electronic resources, such as databases of academic journals, for your research or teaching?". This study also offers a descriptive overview of faculty attitudes, behaviors, perceptions, and preferences. Similar to the 2006 study, "Ithaka 2006 Survey of US Higher Education Faculty Attitudes and Behaviors" (ICPSR 22700), this survey examined faculty attitudes and behaviors on key issues ranging from the library as an information gateway and the need for preservation of scholarly material, to faculty engagement with institutional disciplinary repositories and thoughts about open access. Respondents were asked to identify the primary resource they used for locating information for their research, provide their opinion on the transition of hardcopy library collections to electronic versions, as well as accessing or disseminating scholarly content, and gauge their dependence on college or university libraries in conducting research. In addition, respondents were asked how important various library resources and library and scholarly societies were to their research or teaching, and how important they expect library resources will be in five years. Respondents were queried about their use of electronic search engines, and how often certain methods were used to find information in academic journals. In addition, the survey gathered respondent information on whether they deposited various types of electronic materials or used content deposited by others, the type of repository to which they deposited content, and the importance of long-term electronic data preservation. Lastly, respondents were asked whether they owned an electronic reading device, whether audio or video recordings of their courses were available online, and to rate the importance certain characteristics of academic journals had on influencing their decision of whether or not to publish an article in that journal. Enhanced Data to Accelerate Complex Patient Comparative Effectiveness Research, 2006-2009 [United States] (ICPSR 34639)

Purpose: Develop an easy-to-use data product to facilitate comparative effectiveness research involving complex patients.

Scope: Claims data can be difficult to use, requiring experience to most appropriately aggregate to the patient level and to create meaningful variables such as treatments, covariates, and endpoints. Easy to use data products will accelerate meaningful comparative effectiveness research (CER).

Methods: This project used data from the Medicare Chronic Condition Data Warehouse for patients hospitalized with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) or stroke in 2007 with two-year follow-up and one-year pre-admission baseline. The project joined over 100 raw data files per condition to create research-ready person- and service-level analytic files, code templates, and macros while at the same time adding uniformity in measures of comorbid conditions and other covariates. The data product was tested in a project on statin effectiveness in older patients with multiple comorbidities.

Results: A programmer/analyst with no administrative claims data experience was able to use the data product to create an analytic dataset with minimal support aside from the documentation provided. Analytic dataset creation used the conditions, procedures, and timeline macros provided. The data structure created for AMI adapted successfully for stroke. Complexity increased and statin treatment decreased with age. The two-year survival benefit of statins post-AMI increased with age.

Conclusion: Claims data can be made more user-friendly for CER research on complex conditions. The data product should be expanded by refreshing the cohort and increasing follow-up. Action is warranted to increase the rate of statin use among the oldest patients.

Data Access: These data are not available from ICPSR. The data cannot be made publicly available. Data are stored on University of Iowa College of Public Health secure servers, and may be used only for projects covered within the aims of the original research protocol and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)-approved data use agreement. Data sharing is allowed only for research protocols approved under data re-use requests by the CMS privacy board. The CMS process for data re-use requests is described at Research Data Assistance Center (ResDac). Please note that as of May 2013, the DUA covering this work is set to expire February 1, 2014. With this survey, researchers sought to obtain information regarding changing patterns of information use for teaching, learning, and research, and the implications of these changes on academic and research libraries. In collaboration with the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) and Outsell, Inc., the Digital Library Foundation (DLF) initiated a research process to understand how library use is changing and to support future investigation and analysis. The primary goal of the questionnaire was to collect data on the relevance of existing and possible future services, as well as on student and faculty perceptions of the library's value in the context of the scholarly information environment. Other objectives included determining (1) what information resources are used to support research, teaching, and learning, and (2) how those sources and services are located, evaluated, and used by faculty and students at different kinds of institutions. Faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students were surveyed at public and private research universities and private liberal arts colleges in fall 2001. Respondents were asked questions regarding specific locations from which they access information, the accessibility of information equipment, and usage of hardcopy or electronic materials or reference resources. In addition, the survey asked respondents to identify preferred sources of information, including library resources, and the overall importance of the medium of sources. Finally, respondents were asked questions in regard to time devoted to information access and collection, as well as the effects of potential barriers on information accessibility. Specific questions were addressed to faculty, researchers, and students regarding the use of teaching-related resources, coursework-related materials, and course information availability.

The goal of the ICSOPRU project was to improve the management of research teams and institutions and increase awareness of their responsibility concerning proper application of research results. Concrete objectives were twofold: (1) on the international level, to make widely available comparable facts and experiences concerning the management of research teams and to promote multilateral as well as bilateral cooperation in this field, and (2) on the national level to provide all those concerned (science policy-makers, research managers, scientists, engineers) with substantive information on the state of their national research potential and to encourage them, on the basis of this information compared eventually with similar information from other countries, to take self-corrective actions as needed to improve the level of effectiveness and productivity of the research teams and institutions. Seventeen countries from Africa, the Arab States, Asia, Europe and Latin America took part in ICSOPRU. There were four stages or rounds of data collection: six countries (Austria, Belgium, Finland, Hungary, Poland, Sweden) in Round 1 (between February and September 1974), six countries (Argentina, Egypt, India, Republic of Korea [South], Poland, Ukrainian S.S.R.) in Round 2 (between June 1978 and September 1981), five countries (Brazil, India, Nigeria, Spain, Ukrainian S.S.R.) in Round 3 (between October 1981 and November 1985), and four countries (China, Ghana, Hungary, Mexico) in Round 4 (between May 1985 and June 1987). Each round of questionnaires had different items (except for Rounds 2 and 3 which were the same). Round 1 items included general administrative information relevant to the research units answered by the administrator of the unit, scientific information on the research unit and information relevant to the unit's head answered by the head of the unit, individual information answered by scientists and engineers of the unit, individual information answered by technicians of the unit, and external evaluation of the research units from various scientific and administrative perspectives answered by external evaluators. Rounds 2 and 3 included general information about the research unit answered by the head of the unit, information on the respondent and his or her evaluation of the research unit's management, items on productivity and effectiveness answered by head of the unit along with scientists, engineers, and technicians of the unit, EV-rating of the research unit's effectiveness on a series of dimensions dealing with scientific or social criteria and administrative criteria answered by external evaluators. Making the Most of Statistical Analyses: Improving Interpretation and Presentation (ICPSR 1255)

Social scientists rarely take full advantage of the information available in their statistical results. As a consequence, they miss opportunities to present quantities that are of greatest substantive interest for their research, and to express their degree of certainty about these quantities. In this article, the authors offer an approach, built on the technique of statistical simulation, to extract the currently overlooked information from any statistical method, no matter how complicated, and to interpret and present it in a reader-friendly manner. Using this technique requires some sophistication, but its application should make the results of quantitative articles more informative and transparent to all. To illustrate their recommendations, the authors replicate the results of several published works, showing in each case how the authors' own conclusions could be expressed more sharply and informatively, and how this approach reveals important new information about the research questions at hand.

The purpose of this study was to describe the dynamics of police research, how the role and practice of research differ among police agencies, and why this appears to happen. This study also attempts to answer, on a national scale, four fundamental questions: (1) What is police research? (2) Who does it? (3) Why is it done? and (4) What impact does it have? In addition to describing the overall contours of the conduct of research in United States police agencies, this study also sought to explore the organizational dynamics that might contribute to understanding the different roles research plays in various types of police organizations. Questionnaires were mailed in 1990 to 777 sheriff, municipal, county, and state police agencies selected for this study, resulting in 491 surveys for analysis. Respondents were asked to identify the extent to which they were involved in each of 26 distinct topic areas within the past year, to specify the five activities that consumed most of their time during the previous year, and to describe briefly any projects currently being undertaken that might be of interest to other police agencies. A second approach sought to describe police research not in terms of the topics studied but in terms of the methods police used to study those topics. A third section of the questionnaire called for respondents to react to a series of statements characterizing the nature of research as practiced in their agencies. A section asking respondents to describe the characteristics of those responsible for research in their agency followed, covering topics such as to whom the research staff reported. Respondent agencies were also asked to evaluate the degree to which various factors played a role in initiating research in their agencies. Finally, questions about the impact of research on the police agency were posed.

The purpose of this study was to replicate surveys on school psychology conducted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Bureau of Education (IBE) in 1948 and 1954. Knowledgeable professionals in the field of school psychology were chosen in various countries to report on the current state of the field in their respective countries. For questions requiring information that was generally available but not necessarily common knowledge, respondents were asked to locate and supply this information. The survey includes data for 54 developed and developing countries. Major areas of investigation were (1) demographic characteristics of school psychologists, (2) roles and functions of school psychologists, (3) legal, political, and professional regulations governing the field, (4) preparation and credentialing of practitioners, (5) importance of research, (6) future trends in the field.

Time Budget Research: An International Social Science Council (ISSC) Workbook in Comparative Analysis (ICPSR 8542)

This data collection and its corresponding workbook were designed as an instructional tool to familiarize students with the method of time budget research and to provide an opportunity to conduct analysis with the time budget data on a cross-national basis. The workbook contains exercises to facilitate analyses of the data, and serves as a guide for selecting techniques and measures to be employed in such analyses. The data allow students to examine topics such as the weekend/weekday concept, the status of women, and the family as a unit. Variables in the dataset include duration of time spent on daily activities, the location of the activity, a record of persons accompanying the respondent, and demographic information about the respondent and his or her household. There are two data files in this set, the Multi-national and Halifax subsets. The Multi-national subset contains time usage data collected from respondents in the following cities and nations: in Hungary - Gyor, in France - Arras, Besancon, Chalon-sur-Saone, Dunkerque, Epinal, and Metz, in the United States - Jackson, Michigan, in Canada - Halifax. The Halifax subset contains time budget data from the Halifax-Dartmouth region in Nova Scotia, Canada.

This data collection examines the effects of organizational environment and funding level on the utility of criminal justice research projects sponsored by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ). The data represent a unique source of information on factors that influence the quality and utility of criminal justice research. Variables describing the research grants include NIJ office responsible for monitoring the grant (e.g., courts, police, corrections, etc.), organization type receiving the grant (academic or nonacademic), type of data (collected originally, existing, merged), and priority area (crime, victims, parole, police). The studies are also classified by: (1) sampling method employed, (2) presentation style, (3) statistical analysis employed, (4) type of research design, (5) number of observation points, and (6) unit of analysis. Additional variables provided include whether there was a copy of the study report in the National Criminal Justice Archive, whether the study contained recommendations for policy or practice, and whether the project was completed on time. The data file provides two indices--one that represents quality and one that represents utility. Each measure is generated from a combination of variables in the dataset.
