This poll, fielded February, 2012, and the last of two, is part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that solicits public opinion on a range of political and social issues. Respondents were asked whether things in the country were on the right track, whether they supported the Tea Party, and for their opinions on gasoline prices. Information was collected on respondent's frequency of purchases with credit cards or cash, family finances, preferences for small business or chain store shopping, buying products made in the United States, and opinions on price vs. quality of products and services. Also, a variety of pop culture topics were addressed, including but not limited to, clothing preferences, personal electronic devices, profane language on broadcast television, and opinions on hypothetical scenarios. Demographic variables include sex, age, race, education level, household income, employment status, religious preference and participation, type of residential area (e.g., urban or rural), whether respondents thought of themselves as born-again Christians, marital status, household composition, political party affiliation, political philosophy, voter registration status, voting behavior, whether they served in the armed forces, and the number of phones in their household.

This poll, fielded May 2013, is part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that solicits public opinion on a range of political and social issues. Respondents were asked how Barack Obama was handling the presidency, and if they felt the country was going in the right direction. Multiple questions were asked about what is considered to be a successful man, including how much influence a mother has to make her son the perfect man, what is the most important quality for a man to have, what makes a man flawed, and at what age a man is considered to be successful. Further questions examined recreational activities, such as attendance to baseball games and live theater performances. Female respondents were asked multiple questions, including how smart the perfect man should be compared to themselves, what TV character they would marry, whether they wear make-up, how often they buy make-up, and how often they leave home without wearing any make-up. Demographic information includes sex, age, race, marital status, employment status, education level, household income, household composition, religious preference, type of residential area (e.g., urban or rural), political party affiliation, political philosophy, and whether respondents thought of themselves as born-again Christians.

The construction of this Comparative Taxation Dataset is made possible by National Science Foundation (NSF). The dataset is collected mainly from International Historical Statistics (IHS), 2003, and Flora, Peter (1987) State economy and society in Western Europe, 1815-1975. The study covers 22 countries (total 40 countries and areas). The collection includes economically active population, infant mortality rates, unemployment, indices of industrial production, output of crude petroleum, output of natural gas, output of electrical energy, money supply, total central government expenditure and revenue, wholesale price indices, consumer price indices and so on.

Determinants of Vertical Integration in the Egyptian Garment Industry, 2002 (ICPSR 4270)

The data pertaining to this study was the result of an exhaustive investigation into the nature of the firms composing the Egyptian garment industry. The data capture various characteristics of the firms relating to each one's level and order of integration into the production of fabrics and garments and into retail. Part 1 of the study contains the data obtained from the initial screening interviews administered to each firm by phone to determine the prevalence and nature of integration present in its operations. This information was used to determine which one of the four study questionnaires would be administered to each firm during the final interview. Each questionnaire produced four datasets containing (in this order):

  • general questions
  • contracts
  • lock in, switching costs, and temporal specificity
  • product information.

Questionnaire 1 (Parts 2-5) was administered to the firms for which the following four scenarios was true: (1) garment production and retail occurred at the same time at the establishment, and both garment production and fabric production took place at the same time at the establishment, (2) garment production and retail occurred simultaneously at the establishment, but fabrics were not produced in-house, (3) garment production occurred before retail while garment and fabric production were simultaneous at the establishment, and (4) garment and fabric production that occurred simultaneously at the establishment but retail operations not performed in-house (i.e. did not own or rent its own retail stores). Questionnaire 2 (Parts 6-9) was completed by the firms for which the following two scenarios were true: (1) garment production was subsequent to fabric production, and garment production was started prior to retail, or (2) garment production was started prior to retail, and the firm did not produce any of its own fabrics. Questionnaire 3 (Parts 10-13) was given to the firms for which the following three scenarios were true: (1) garment production began simultaneously with fabric production but not at the onset, and for which retail started subsequent to both garment and fabric production, (2) both fabric production and retail had started subsequent to garment production, and (3) garment production started before fabric production, and the firm did not perform in-house retail operations. Questionnaire 4 (Parts 14-17) was administered to firms for which the following two scenarios were true: (1) garment production was subsequent to fabric production, but in-house retail operations were not performed, or (2) there was no fabric production or in-house retail operations. Each of the four questionnaires contained an identical screening section (in addition to the screening information found in Part 1) in order to ensure that the appropriate questionnaire was administered during the interview. Specific questions regarding each firm's management, sister companies, products, operations, and other firm-level characteristics varied depending on the questionnaire. However, sections eight and nine, dealing with fabrics and fabric suppliers, were identical across all questionnaires.

This round of Euro-Barometer surveys queried respondents on standard Euro-Barometer measures such as public awareness of and attitudes toward the Common Market and the European Community (EC), and also focused on consumer goods, Social Security, health care and health care benefits, the elderly, retirement, and alcohol and drug use. Questions concerning consumer goods asked whether respondents read product information before purchasing, what additional product information they would like to see, what three things other than price were most important in deciding whether to purchase an item, and whether it was necessary to have the same type of product information available for all members of the European Community (EC). Respondents' attitudes and opinions on Social Security were probed with questions that asked whether they agreed that Social Security properly protects the unemployed, the elderly, the sick or disabled, those with work-related injuries or illness, and the poor. Respondents were also asked whether policies on pensions, minimum income, and unemployment should be decided by national governments or by the EC, and whether foreigners should have the same Social Security benefits as citizens. The general health of respondents and their health care benefits were assessed through questions that asked whether they had a long-standing illness, disability, or infirmity, whether they had cut down their activity due to illness or injury, and whether they had taken medicine or talked to a doctor within the last 30 days. Respondents were also queried about which conditions they would see a doctor for and what type of examinations they had had in the past three years. Respondents were asked to rate what they paid for various medical services, the general quality of their health care, and the nature and availability of health insurance. The main problems facing the elderly and the role the elderly play in society were also topics of investigation in this survey. Questions elicited respondents' views toward possible changes in pension terms, whether retirement should occur at a fixed age, what types of discrimination affect the elderly who are working, whether the government should introduce laws to try to stop age discrimination, whether a minimum level of income should be provided to the elderly, and whether the elderly needing personal care should go into residential/nursing homes or should have social services help them remain in their homes for as long as possible. Respondents were also asked whether they provided long-term care to anyone either living with them or not living with them, who was in the best position to decide which services are most important for the elderly, what the best method of financing long-term care for the elderly was, and whether the EC was doing enough with regard to the elderly. Questions on retirement dealt with what ages respondents retired/planned to retire, whether the retired felt their pensions to be adequate, whether working people looked forward to retiring, whether pensions should be extended to widows and dependent children, whether pensions should be reduced for those who work for earned income beyond retirement, and whether pensions should be provided through government taxation, employer/employee contributions, or private contracts between workers and pension companies. Queries about alcohol and drug usage probed the use of beer, wine, spirits, and other forms of alcohol, age at which the respondent began drinking, familiarity with major forms of drugs, age at which drugs were first offered, how difficult it was to get drugs, and the means available for getting drugs. Additional questions focused on how the respondent viewed the drug problem, the top priority in eliminating the drug problem, diminishing the effects of drug use, whether drug use leads to AIDS, prostitution, health problems, social problems, violence, suicide, personality breakdowns, and problems with the law, and the major reasons for alcohol and drug use. Demographic and other background information was gathered on life satisfaction, number of people residing in the home, size of locality, home ownership, trade union membership, region of residence, and occupation of the head of household, as well as the respondent's age, sex, marital status, education, occupation, work sector, religiosity, subjective social class, use of media, left-right political self-placement, and opinion leadership.

This round of Euro-Barometer surveys queried respondents on standard Euro-Barometer measures, such as how satisfied they were with their present life, whether they attempted to persuade others close to them to share their views on subjects they held strong opinions about, whether they discussed political matters, what their country's goals should be for the next ten years, and how they viewed the need for societal change. Additional questions focused on the respondents' knowledge of and opinions on the European Community (EC), including how well-informed they felt about the EC, what sources of information about the EC they used, whether their country had benefited from being an EC member, and the extent of their personal interest in EC matters. Another major focus of the surveys was on the attitudes and behavior of European consumers. An initial series of questions dealt with the buying habits of respondents in a number of areas. The questionnaire then inquired about complaints respondents may have had with various products and services, and actions they may have taken on those complaints. The interview also probed for awareness of various efforts to protect and inform consumers. Other questions assessed attitudes towards consumer protection attempts and reactions to consumer testing institutes. The survey gathered standard demographic information for each respondent including education, occupation, marital status, age, and sex, as well as the occupation of the head of household and composition of the household. In addition to the survey itself, the ICPSR version of the study contains three constructed indices. Two of these indices categorize respondents' political ideology according to their partisan support and their left-right leanings, and the third index measures the respondents' opinion leadership in discussions with others about politics. Euro-Barometer 4 contains data gathered from representative samples of respondents aged 15 or older interviewed in each of the nine nations of the EC (Germany, Great Britain, Denmark, Italy, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland, and the Netherlands) in October-November 1975.

This round of Eurobarometer surveys diverged from the standard Eurobarometer measures and queried respondents on their opinions regarding science and technology, social values, and services of general interest. Questions concerning the first topic focused on the respondents' attitudes toward science and technology issues including what areas they were most interested, how informed respondents were in general, and recent visits to a museum of science and technology or another type of public museum. Other questions measured respondents' level of trust in science, their views on the role science and technology should have in improving the economy, the potential benefits or harmful effects of science, and the role the European Community plays in scientific research. Another topic covered was social values in relation to science and technology. Respondents were asked how often they thought about the meaning and purpose of life, about their spiritual beliefs, what kind of family they grew up in, how often they trusted other people, how satisfied they were with their lives, whether a university education is more important for a man than for a woman, and whether men make better political leaders than women. The surveys also solicited respondents' opinions with respect to developing technologies (including solar energy, biotechnology, genetic engineering, the Internet, nanotechnology), and possible applications of science and technology over the next 20 years (such as cloning monkeys or pigs for use in research into human diseases or cloning human beings so that couples can have a baby even when one partner has a genetic disease). Respondents were queried on their opinions about humanity's relationship to nature, what decisions about science and technology should be based primarily on, how important they thought science and technology would be for their society in ten years' time, and if what those who are involved in science and technology do has a positive effect on society. Finally, the topic of services of general interest (such as electricity, natural gas, fixed telephone, mobile phone, postal services, local transport, rail transport, and air transport) included questions regarding satisfaction with the provision of services, accessibility, fairness in pricing, quality of service, and customer service. Background information collected includes respondent age, gender, nationality, marital status, left-right political self-placement, occupation, age at completion of education, household composition, telephone equipment, religion, and region of residence.

The Eurobarometer series is a unique cross-national and cross-temporal survey program conducted on behalf of the European Commission. These surveys regularly monitor public opinion in the European Union (EU) member countries and consist of standard modules and special topic modules. The standard modules address attitudes towards European unification, institutions and policies, measurements for general socio-political orientations, as well as respondent and household demographics. The special topic modules address such topics as agriculture, education, natural environment and resources, public health, public safety and crime, and science and technology.

This round of Eurobarometer surveys covers the following special topics: (1) energy in the EU, (2) citizens' rights, (3) e-communications, (4) the internal market, and (5) carbon dioxide capture and storage. Information was collected on potential policies and ways to reduce energy consumption, the performance of EU administration, opinions about citizens' most important rights, and report access, use, and providers of various technology and media, including the Internet. Additional information includes respondents' views on employment across EU countries, counterfeiting and piracy, the handling of carbon dioxide, and effects on climate change.

This data collection focuses on informal trading and is based on field research carried out in "Calle Ipiales," the largest retail market of Quito, Ecuador. A major objective of the study was to examine the nature of linkages between informal traders (i.e., mobile street vendors, stationary market sellers, and small-store owners) and other sectors of the economy. The nature of such employment was investigated, and specific topics included vendors' level of dependence and independence and autonomy over their jobs, access to the markets, and access to equipment and credit. A second objective was to develop a typology of informal traders, specified by different types of linkages to each other and to the formal economy. A third objective was to identify the welfare implications of belonging to each subgroup of informal vendors. This included the examination of reasons for working in the informal sector, economic advantages and disadvantages, the relationship to the government, and other types of support vendors may receive. Additional variables in the collection cover type of product sold, amount of profit, supplier of goods to be sold, and type of customers. Background variables include age and sex of vendor, marital status, place of birth, years of residence in Quito, education, previous occupation, occupational training, number of household members, and household income.

This study provides social, demographic, and economic data on the United States population compiled from ICPSR holdings of county-level census materials and enhanced with information obtained from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) of the United States Department of Commerce. County-level socioeconomic indicators were aggregated and reported for 171 functional urban regions encompassing the entire contiguous United States. These regions, established in the early 1960s by BEA, comprise whole counties surrounding a central Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area node that served as a recipient location of work commuting or a center of newspaper circulation, wholesale trade, or banking transactions. Total population counts, proportions of adults, males, African-Americans, and foreign-born, measures of population change, number of persons per household, and per capita values of manufactured and farm products are listed for census years between 1820-1970. For some years, data on per capita income were obtained from BEA publications. The study also includes derived measures computed by the principal investigators, such as logarithmic values of population totals, Z-scores of most of the basic indicators, and measures of decadal population growth for each region normalized by the rate of population growth for the nation as a whole. Study of Consumer Purchases in the United States, 1935-1936 (ICPSR 8908)

In 1935, the principal investigators interviewed a national sample of all families in the United States to ascertain for the first time in a single national survey the earning and spending habits of inhabitants of large and small cities, villages, and farms. Families completed questionnaires that reported in detail all household income sources and expenditures. Respondents were asked to list the amount of all income received by the family from each person employed as well as from other sources such as gifts, interest and dividends, pensions, and work in the home. Complete information was also provided on family composition, type of living quarters, housing accommodations, fuel and other utility expenses, medical care, recreational activities, tobacco use, purchase of reading materials, educational expenses, miscellaneous occupational expenses, gifts furnished, taxes paid, automobile expenses, personal care costs, and a detailed appraisal of all changes in family assets and liabilities over the course of the previous year. Families also reported the quantity of food items consumed, unit purchase price, and total expense of all food items consumed by the family in the seven days prior to the interview. In addition, families were queried on furnishings and equipment purchased for the home as well as on all items of clothing purchased for each family member in the previous year. Demographic characteristics recorded for each household member include relationship to the household head, age, sex, occupation, weeks spent at home or away from home, wage rate, length of time employed during the year, and total earnings.
