The United States Census Bureau has conducted surveys of manufacturing activity since 1810 with fluctuating frequency. Between 1919 and 1939 the Census of Manufactures (CM) was conducted biennially. This data collection consists of individual-plant data from the Census of Manufactures for 1929, 1931, 1933, and 1935, the only years in this span for which original returns are available. The records of the Sugar Refining Industry have been coded to produce an electronic dataset to provide the basis for microeconomic evidence for the study of the Great Depression. The dataset contains observations on sugar refining operations, plants (e.g. name, location, etc.), products made, operation and working hours, employment, wages and salaries, and operating costs.

National Organizations Survey, 2010: Examining the Relationships Between Job Quality and the Domestic and International Sourcing of Business Functions by United States Organizations (ICPSR 35011)

The National Organizations Survey, 2010 (2010 NOS) aimed to quantify domestic and international sourcing of United States private and public sector organizations. Information was supplied by 333 respondents about their organization's domestic and international sourcing costs. Variables in this data collection include the organizations employee's benefits (such as the retirement benefits, health benefits, and wage) and the organization's expenditure for eight business functions: (1) the primary function, (2) research and development of products, services or technology, (3) sales and marketing, (4) transportation, logistics, and distribution services, (5) customer and after-sales service, (6) management, administration, and back office functions, (7) information technology systems, and (8) facilities maintenance. The sourcing costs were either incurred domestically in-house, externally from domestic suppliers, from international affiliates, or externally from international suppliers. For companies engaged in international sourcing, information about the type of international location was identified as (1) industrialized country locations with costs the same or higher than the United States, (2) emerging country locations with costs somewhat lower than the United States, and (3) developing country locations with costs much lower than the United States. United States employment and wages (according to four ranges) were also collected by business function. The data collection also includes information about each organization's industry and job turnover.

International Cycles (ICPSR 1116)

Twenty years of monthly production data for 11 manufacturing industries in 19 countries are studied. Using the fact that in some countries production virtually shuts down for one summer month, together with the differences in the timing of aggregate cyclical fluctuations, information is provided on the cost structure of different industries. A number of previously documented patterns can be confirmed. In particular, a tremendous amount of volatility in production is accounted for by seasonal shifts, but the seasonal shifts are not very highly correlated across countries. There are also considerable differences in the timing and magnitude of business cycles across countries. Lastly, the country-level differences in seasonality are larger that the industry-level patterns in seasonality. In addition to these basic observations, a number of new results describing how seasonal production patterns vary over the course of the business cycle are provided. With the exception of textiles, and to a lesser extent transportation equipment and chemicals, the seasonal cycle in production is significantly less volatile during a business cycle boom than it is during a business cycle contraction. For one-third of the 19 countries in our sample, there are significant cyclical/seasonal interactions common to all industries within the country. In relative terms, the estimated interactions that are common to countries are larger than the interactions that are common to industries. This is in line with the finding that the overall variation in production differs more across countries that it does across industries. Finally, the reallocation of production from high output months to low output months that typically occurs in moving from a business cycle through to peak is sometimes quite large.

This data collection contains survey data gathered in June and July of 1972 from decision-makers at 173 industrial plants in three United States cities: Detroit, Michigan, Chicago, Illinois, and Atlanta, Georgia. The survey was carried out by members of the Economic Behavior Program at the University of Michigan's Survey Research Center who personally administered questionnaires to high-level staff members at each company (e.g., president, vice president, general manager, office manager, or public relations director). Respondents were asked to give reasons for the present location of the plant and to outline the advantages and disadvantages of its location. The duration of plant operations, level of production, sales, geographical area served, future expansion, and production problems were all examined as well.
