National Neighborhood Data Archive (NaNDA): Neighborhood-School Gap by Census Tract and ZIP Code Tabulation Area, United States, 2009-2010 and 2015-2016 (ICPSR 38579)

Released/updated on: 2022-11-14
Geographic coverage: United States
Time period: 2009-01-01--2010-12-31, 2015-01-01--2016-12-31

This study contains measures of neighborhood-school gap for 2009-2010 and 2015-2016. Neighborhood-school gap (NS gap) refers to the discrepancy between the demographics of a public school and its surrounding community. For example, if 60 percent of a school's student body is Black, but 30 percent of the neighborhood population is Black, the school has a positive Black neighborhood-school gap. These datasets measure gaps in race and poverty between elementary school student populations and the census tracts and ZIP code tabulation areas (ZCTAs) that those elementary schools serve. Data is at the census tract and ZCTA level. Supplemental data containing component variables used to calculate NS gap at the school and block group level is also available.

Long-Term Trends in Private School Enrollments by Family Income (ICPSR 109601)

Released/updated on: 2019-05-03
Geographic coverage: United States
Time period: 1968-01-01--2013-12-31
We use data from multiple national surveys to describe trends in private elementary school enrollment by family income from 1968 to 2013. We find several important trends. First, the private school enrollment rate of middle-income families declined
substantially over the past five decades while that of high-income families remained quite stable. Second, there are notable differences in private school enrollment trends by race/ethnicity, urbanicity, and region of the country. Although racial/ethnic
differences in private school enrollment are to a large extent explained by income differences, the urban/suburban and regional differences in private school enrollment patterns are large even among families with similar incomes. Factors contributing
to these patterns may include trends in income inequality, private school costs and availability, and the perceived relative quality of local schooling options.

International Civic and Citizenship Education Study, 2016 (ICPSR 37147)

Released/updated on: 2018-10-24
Geographic coverage: Colombia, Hong Kong, Russia, Malta, Netherlands, South Korea, Sweden, Latvia, Belgium, Norway, Taiwan, Finland, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Italy, Mexico, Slovenia, Chile, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Peru, Germany, Croatia, Estonia
Time period: 2015-01-01--2016-12-31

The International Civic and Citizenship Education Study, 2016 (ICCS) is an international assessment of the ways in which young people are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens. It investigated student knowledge and understanding of civics and citizenship as well as students' perceptions, attitudes, and activities related to civics and citizenship. It also examined differences among countries in these outcomes and the relationship of these outcomes to students' individual characteristics and family backgrounds, to teaching practices, and to school and broader community contexts.

Like its predecessor IEA Civic Education Study, 1999 (CIVED), ICCS 2016 included a student test of civic knowledge and understanding, as well as questionnaires for students, teachers, and school principals. The comprehensive core assessment was complemented by regional modules for Europe and Latin America, designed to flexibly recognize regional interests and investigate related aspects of civic and citizenship education. The survey data were supplemented by information about the national contexts for civic and citizenship education gathered by the national research centers of the participating countries.

Data were collected in 2015-2016 under the auspices of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) headquartered in Amsterdam. ICCS collected data from more than 94,000 eighth grade (or equivalent) students in about 3,800 schools from 24 countries. These student data were augmented with data from more than 37,000 teachers in those schools and further contextual data collected from school principals and national research centers.

Bridging the Gap, Elementary School Data (Food and Fitness Survey) (ICPSR 36356)

Released/updated on: 2018-01-15
Geographic coverage: United States
Time period: 2006-01-01--2013-12-31
The Food and Fitness Survey is part of the larger Bridging the Gap (BTG) research program, which is a research initiative funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The primary goals of the Food and Fitness survey project were to obtain nationally representative information on school practices, and to obtain information about the association between district-level wellness policies and practices in those schools. Food and Fitness involved annual surveys of school-level respondents at elementary schools from the 2006-07 to the 2012-13 school years. This study contains data from these surveys for public and private elementary schools from the 2006-07 to the 2012-13 school years. Topics of the surveys include school characteristics, school meal options and prices, food advertisements in schools, food practices in classrooms and school functions, meal times during the day, physical education facilities and curriculum, methods of transportation to and from school, school wellness policies, school beverage guidelines, the "Nutritional Guidelines for Competitive Foods", school vending machines, and a la carte as well as school store food and beverage offerings.

IEA Civic Education Study, 1999: Civic Knowledge and Engagement Among 14-Year-Olds in 23 European Countries, 2 Latin American Countries, Hong Kong, Australia, and the United States (ICPSR 21661)

Released/updated on: 2016-11-07
Geographic coverage: Hong Kong, Cyprus, United States, England, Portugal, Global, Russia, Greece, Sweden, Latvia, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Chile, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Colombia, Romania, Hungary, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Belgium, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Italy, Australia, Germany, Estonia
Time period: 1999-01-01--1999-12-31
The IEA Civic Education Study (known as CIVED) is an international assessment of the civic knowledge and skills of 14-year-olds (8th and 9th graders) in 28 countries. Data were collected in 1999 under the auspices of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) headquartered in Amsterdam. Begun in 1958, IEA is a consortium of educational and social science research institutes in more than 50 countries. The IEA's International Steering Committee (University of Maryland, College Park) and an international Technical Advisory Group guided the research. The International Coordinating Center (Humboldt University of Berlin) coordinated the day-to-day operations and the IEA Data Processing Center (Hamburg, Germany) processed the data. The Study's National Research Coordinators developed an octagon model that guided the two phases of the study, the first phase a more qualitative set of case studies in 24 countries and the second phase a test and survey of students in 29 countries. This model gave special attention to macrosystem elements such as the country's history of democracy, transnational position, economy, and media. It also delineated ways in which civic education goals are carried into practice, especially the role of the formal community, informal community, school, peer group, and family. Publications from the study have addressed each of these theories and approaches and have been authored by educational researchers, civic education specialists, comparative scholars, political scientists, and psychologists. The following countries took part: Australia, Belgium (French-speaking), Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong (SAR), Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russian Federation, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. The sizes of the nationally-representative samples ranged from 2,076 students tested in Belgium (French-speaking) to 5,688 students tested in Chile. Civic achievement was measured by a total civic knowledge scale composed of two subscales: civic content and skills. Civic content refers to knowledge of civic concepts such as the characteristics of democracies, and civic skills refer to the interpretative skills needed to understand civic-related communication (e.g., to make sense of a political cartoon or an election leaflet). In addition, survey items measured students' concepts of democracy, citizenship, and government, attitudes toward civic issues such as immigrants' or women's rights, trust in governmental institutions, and several types of expected political and community participation. Students also answered questions pertaining to their background characteristics, their organizational participation, and the climate of their school and classroom. Item responses gathered from approximately 95,000 students in total and 22 scale scores developed with confirmatory factor analysis and item response theory are included on the file. Questionnaires also solicited background information from school principals and teachers.

Schools and Staffing Survey (ICPSR 36542)

Released/updated on: 2016-08-01
Geographic coverage: United States

The Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS) is a system of related questionnaires that provide descriptive data on the context of elementary and secondary education and provide policymakers a variety of statistics on the condition of education in the United States. The SASS system covers a wide range of topics from teacher demand, teacher and principal characteristics, general conditions in schools, principals' and teachers' perceptions of school climate and problems in their schools, teacher compensation, district hiring and retention practices, to basic characteristics of the student population.

Questionnaires, methodology information and summary tables can be downloaded directly from the SASS website. Of cultural interest are the data on library and media centers which offer insights into subjects such as library staffing, library collections, and library expenditures. These data can be accessed through the National Center for Education Statistics DataLab.

Policymakers involved in arts and culture would find tables from the SASS/TFS Table Library important to their work, including the following:

  • Number and percentage of public school teachers whose main assignment is in arts and music, by main teaching assignment and community type: 2011-12
  • Number of public schools that reported having library media centers, by state: 2011-12
  • Average number of holdings, additions, and expenditures in library media centers during 2010-11 for various kinds of materials, by state: 2011-12
  • Average hours public and private third grade students spent on art and music during a typical full week of school, by selected school characteristics: 2007-08

The IEA Civic Education Study is an international assessment of the civic knowledge and skills of 14-year-olds in 28 countries. It was conducted under the auspices of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA): the IEA's International Steering Committee guided the research, the International Coordinating Center (ICC) coordinated the day-to-day operations, and a data processing center processed the data. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) sponsored the 1999 IEA Civic Education Study in the United States. The assessment was administered to 2,811 students across 124 public and private schools nationwide at the beginning of ninth grade, the grade in which most 14-year-olds were enrolled at the time of the assessment (October 1999). Civic achievement in this study was measured by a total civic knowledge scale composed of two subscales: civic content and civic skills. Civic content refers to knowledge of content, such as characteristics of democracies, and civic skills refer to the interpretative skills needed to understand civic-related information (e.g., the skills needed to make sense of a newspaper article). In addition, survey items measured students' concepts of democracy, citizenship, and government, attitudes toward civic issues, and expected political participation. Students also answered questions on their background characteristics and on classroom climate. Questionnaires also solicited background information on school principals and teachers, and demographic information about the school and school programs related to civics education.

This poll, fielded January 6-10, 2010, is a part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that solicits public opinion on the presidency and on a range of other political and social issues. Respondents were asked whether they approved of the way Barack Obama was handling his job as president, the economy, the war in Afghanistan, health care, and the threat of terrorism. Respondents were queried on what they thought was the most important problem facing the United States, how they would rate the condition of the national economy, whether they thought the economy was getting better or worse, and whether they approved of the way that the Democrats and the Republicans in Congress were handling health care. Respondents were also asked whether they thought health care reform was going too far in trying to provide health insurance to as many Americans as possible, in trying to control cost, and in trying to regulate the health insurance industry. Information was collected on whether respondents' thought that Guantanamo Prison should continue to operate, whether they favored or opposed mandatory testing of students in public schools each year to determine how well the school is educating students, whether they thought students should be required to learn a foreign language in order to graduate from high school, and whether they thought that teachers in public schools were paid too much, too little, or just the right amount. Respondents were asked whether they had children that attended school, what type of school their children attended, what grade they would give to the quality of their children's education, whether they thought their children's education was better or worse than the education they received. Information was collected on how much respondents' children studied, whether they thought that it was important for their children's school curriculum to include arts, music and physical education, whether they thought that their children would attend college, and whether they thought that their children's school was properly preparing them for college. Respondents were also asked to rate the United States on its ability to protect the country from terrorist attacks, how likely they thought it was that there would be another terrorist attack in the United States within the next few months, whether they were afraid of flying, whether they thought that it was justified for people of certain racial or ethnic groups to be subjected to additional security checks at airports, and whether they thought that X-ray machines should be used to scan the bodies of travelers at airports. Finally respondents were asked a number of miscellaneous questions including what their New Year's resolution was, what their favorite season was, who they thought was the top athletic role model, who they thought was the most important American contributor to literature, what place and time period they would most like to return to, and how often they fly. Demographic information includes sex, age, race, marital status, education level, household income, military service, religious preference, type of residential area (e.g., urban or rural), political party affiliation, political philosophy, and voter registration status.
