CBS News/New York Times/Tokyo Broadcasting System Japan Poll, November 18-21, 1991 (ICPSR 9860)
Released/updated on: 2011-10-20
Time period: 1991-11-18--1991-11-21
This survey, in addition to providing an ongoing evaluation of the Bush presidency, focused on Japan and the Japanese. Respondents were asked whether they approved of George Bush's handling of the presidency, foreign policy, and the economy. Other questions pertained to the amount of attention paid to news about Japan, descriptions of Americans and Japanese as competitive, easygoing, hardworking, lazy, courageous, cowardly, peaceloving, and warlike, relations between Japan and the United States, and the prospects for the future generation of Americans and Japanese. Respondents were also asked if most Japanese respect Americans and vice versa, and if Japan should be viewed as a dependable ally for the United States in the future and vice versa. Other queries centered around whether the increase in Japanese investment in the United States posed a threat to American economic independence, whether Japan had become a world power and should assume responsibilities toward other countries, and whether Japan should act as a leader in the world economy even if it required economic sacrifice on Japan's part. Those surveyed were also asked about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the dropping of atomic bombs on Japan by the United States, the impetus behind Japan's involvement in World War II, Japan's present military strength, and whether the treaty calling for Japan's provision of bases for United States military forces in return for the United States' defense of Japan should be continued. Additional issues pertaining to Japan and the United States included the question of economic aid to the Soviet Union, military assistance to other countries, whether the United States should have sent troops to fight in the Persian Gulf, and if Japan should have done more to help to defeat Iraq during the war. Other topics included the field of candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination and holiday spending habits. Background information on respondents included labor union membership, political party preference, political orientation, religious preference, education, age, race, and family income.

Judicial Mind, 1946-1969 (ICPSR 7289)
Released/updated on: 1992-02-16
Geographic coverage: United States
Time period: 1946-01-01--1969-01-01
This study employed a social-psychological approach to study how and why judicial decisions were made and to present a substantive interpretation of major post-World War II trends in the Supreme Court's policy-making on the basis of aggregate data measuring both manifest voting behavior and inferred political attitudes of the justices. Besides recording the position taken by each justice on the cases considered, several scales were constructed reflecting the ideological implications of judicial decisions. About a third of the decisions included in this study dealt with questions of political rights and civil liberties, and were used to create a political liberalism scale, with the following subcomponents: fair procedure, voting equality, political freedom, religious freedom, racial equality, and civic equality. Another third of the cases, concerned with questions of economic policy, were classified as a scale of economic liberalism, with two major components -- governmental regulation of economic activities and support for labor unions. The remaining third of the sampled decisions were used to construct minor scales: judicial activism and judicial centralization, focusing on the Supreme Court's own political role, a fiscal claims scale dealing with the financial interests of the federal government, and a nationalization scale concerned with the extent to which a justice tended to uphold the claims and interests of the national government.

Soviet Elites in the Post-Stalin Period, 1966 (ICPSR 7521)
Released/updated on: 1992-02-16
Geographic coverage: Global, Soviet Union
The data were collected in 1966 to facilitate the exploration of relationships between the demographic and career pattern attributes of the Soviet leadership and attitudinal variance within the leadership. Two types of data were included in the study: attitudinal and demographic/career pattern data. The attitudinal data were generated by a content analysis of a sample of articles in "representative" Soviet periodicals for the year 1965. Information on the process of policy-making, socialization, resource allocation, and popular mobilization within the Soviet party was collected. Demographic and career pattern data were also gathered to supplement the information on the Soviet officials in the attitudinal sample. Demographic variables specify date of birth, nationality, social class, education, party membership and positions held, membership year, membership of the Communist Politburo, types of career, and fields of specialization.

It contains political, economic, and social data and rates of change for 155 countries. Data are provided for central government current revenue and expenditure, gross national product and growth rates, imports, exports, and trade as a percentage of the gross national product, total military expenditure and manpower, public education, public health expenditure, energy consumption, coal, natural gas, and petroleum reserves and production, GINI measures of inequity, income inequity, sectorial inequity, coefficient of land inequality, political and civil rights indices, political and economic discrimination, the percentage of those discriminated against and its intensity, the proportion and intensity of separatism, voting behavior, the number of registered voters and voter turnout as a percentage of the adult population, the first five largest political parties, total legislative seats, total adult and working age population, population density, percentage of population in cities, agricultural density, health and nutrition measures, consumption measures, literacy, and school enrollment. The Daily Event Data file (Part 2) contains a variety of governmental change and political protest events for 139 countries. It records 38 kinds of domestic events including demonstrations, riots, strikes, assassinations, elections, referenda, and imposition of political restrictions, including censorship. Some of the 38 event types were only distinguished for the events occurring in particular periods. For example, the categories of bombing, ambush, raid, arrest, release of the arrested, imposition of martial law or curfew, and relaxation of martial law or curfew were added in 1978. The Annual Events Data file consists of summations of the occurrences of each type of event within each country on a year-to-year basis from 1948 to 1977. The annual totals are given for the same countries as in the daily file, with the exception of three countries. The Quarterly Event Data file consists of summations of the occurrences of each type of event within each country on a quarter-to-quarter basis. The 38 types of events coded in the quarterly events file have also been collapsed to 17 broader categories to maintain comparability with earlier editions of the handbook.
