Explaining Low Fertility in Italy (ELFI) (ICPSR 31881)

The ethnographic fieldwork portion of the project - interviews with women of reproductive age, and when available their partners and mothers - was initiated and completed in 2006. For each of four Italian cities (Padua, Bologna, Cagliari, and Naples) studied ethnographically by trained anthropologists, both a working-class and a middle-class neighborhood were identified. These interviews (349 in number) have been transcribed without identifiers. All interviews have been coded and assigned 'attributes' (or nominative variables, such as gender, civil/religious status of marriage, etc.) using the qualitative data analysis software (NVIVO), and these reside in secure electronic project folders. This large body of qualitative interview data is now complete and ready for use across the international collaborative units. Preliminary research reveals the particular significance of family ties in Italy, the fundamental role played by gender systems, and the specific cultural, socio-economic, and politic contexts in which fertility behavior and parenting are embedded.

This aggregate data collection is an extract of the International Data Base (IDB), a computerized central repository of demographic, economic, and social data for all countries of the world. Data available in this collection include total midyear population estimates and projections (1950-1985), percent urban population, estimates and projections of crude birth rate, crude death rate, net migration rate, rate of natural increase, and annual growth rate, infant mortality rate and life expectancy at birth by sex, percent literate by sex, and percent of the labor force in agriculture.

National Population and Government Expenditures, 1972 (ICPSR 7413)

This dataset merges 1972 data on social and military expenditures in 132 nations selected from WORLD MILITARY AND SOCIAL EXPENDITURES, 1974 (see Data Source) with information on demographic attributes of the same nations in 1972 obtained from WORLD POPULATION, 1973 (ICPSR 5032), collected by the United States Bureau of the Census. Military expenditures as well as international peacekeeping, public education, public health, and foreign economic aid expenditures are presented as both raw and per capita measures. Other information includes number of teachers, school age population per teacher, illiteracy rates, number of qualified physicians, population per physician, infant mortality rates, and population per soldier.

Projections of the Population of States by Age, Sex, and Race [United States]: 1988 to 2010 (ICPSR 9270)

This dataset provides annual population projections for the 50 states and the District of Columbia by age, sex, and race for the years 1986 through 2010. The projections were made using a mathematical projection model called the cohort-component method. This method allows separate assumptions to be made for each of the components of population change: births, deaths, internal migration, and international migration. The projections are consistent with the July 1, 1986 population estimates for states. In general, the projections assume a slight increase in the national levels of fertility, an increasing level of life expectancy, and a decreasing level of net international migration. Internal migration assumptions are based on the annual state-to-state migration data for the years 1975-1986.

West Malaysian Family Survey, 1966-1967 (ICPSR 31582)

The Family Survey was a national (contemporary Peninsular Malaysia) probability sample survey consisting of an initial household screening interview followed by an intensive interview of all currently married women, aged 15 to 45, living in the screened households. The primary objective of the survey was to gather baseline data on fertility and on family planning knowledge, attitudes, and practices. The survey was conducted by the Malaysian Department of Statistics for the National Family Planning Board of Malaysia. Technical assistance was provided by the staff of the Population Studies Center of the University of Michigan.
