This special topic poll, conducted January 6-7, 1997, sought respondents' views on national and local media practices. Respondents were asked to rate the ethics and honesty of television and print news media, as well as of politicians, corporations, average Americans, and the Clinton Administration. Those polled were asked whether they approved of the way national network television and local television stations reported the news, and whether the news media cared more about the accuracy of a story or being the first to report it. Views were also sought on the media's treatment of politicians, various socioeconomic classes, religious and political groups, celebrities, the military, the police, the government, and corporations. Respondents also rated their enjoyment of news reports on celebrities and politicians, and commented on the relevance of news stories to their lives. Additional topics covered the influence of network television news on viewers, the benefits and drawbacks of investigative news reporting, the media's respect or disrespect of privacy, the power of the media to limit political corruption and unfair business practices, and how often respondents watched television evening news programs. Demographic variables included sex, race, age, education level, household income, employment status, political party affiliation, political philosophy, and type of residential area (e.g., urban or rural).

This special topic poll sought respondents' views on President Bill Clinton's foreign policy goals in Bosnia, specifically on the recent decision to send 20,000 United States troops to Bosnia as part of the global peace-keeping mission, as well as several additional topics. Those queried were asked for their opinions on the use of swear and curse words by adults, teenagers, middle school children, and grade school children, and reasons for using such language. They were also asked to rate the ethics and honesty of politicians, average citizens, doctor, lawyers, and members of Congress. Additional topics covered respondents' experience with lawyers, the United States system of civil laws and lawsuits, the power of prayer for healing, and beliefs regarding whether God does heal. ABC News "Nightline" Newt Gingrich and Ethics Poll, January 1997 (ICPSR 2172)

This special topic poll sought respondents' views on Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, his honesty, and the ethics of politicians. Respondents were asked for their opinion on Gingrich's admission to giving inaccurate information to the House Ethics Committee regarding political fundraising activities, the $300,000 fine that Gingrich received as punishment, and Gingrich's reelection as Speaker of the House. Additional topics covered the role of news organizations in the ethics investigation, politicians and ethics, whether Gingrich was a victim of a double standard, whether Gingrich or his lawyer was to blame for the wrong-doing, and whether Gingrich was punished because he was a conservative Republican. The results of the poll were announced on the ABC television program "Nightline." Demographic variables include political party and sex.

This poll was conducted in response to the controversy regarding the cessation of life support for Florida resident Terri Schiavo. Respondents were asked whether or not they had been following the case and if they supported or opposed the decision to remove the feeding tube. They were also asked if federal courts should be involved in this case, if Congress should get involved in similar cases, and whether politicians were more concerned for Schiavo or for gaining political advantage. The survey also contained questions about whether respondents would want to be kept alive if in a similar situation, if the case caused them to have discussions with friends and family regarding their wishes, and if any friends or family had passed away after terminating life support. Other information collected included political party affiliation, political philosophy, religious affiliation, and gender.

Respondents were asked to give their opinions of President Bill Clinton and his handling of the presidency, foreign policy, and the economy. They were also asked for their views regarding Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole, the United States Congress, the 1996 presidential and congressional elections, the state of the nation's economy, and the qualities they look for in a president. Comparative questions elicited respondents' opinions on whether President Clinton was an old-style, tax-and-spend Democrat or a new-style Democrat who would be careful with the public's money, and whether Senator Dole was an old-style Republican who wanted to cut taxes for the rich and social programs for the poor, or a new-style Republican who would protect social programs while cutting the federal budget. Additional topics covered the impact of Dole's resignation from the Senate on the upcoming presidential election, the moral standing of the Democratic and Republican parties, and whether Clinton and Dole should be classified as Washington insiders. Background variables include age, race, sex, education, political party, and voter registration and participation history.

American National Election Study: 2000 Pilot Study (ICPSR 2936)

This brief special-topic Pilot study focused on a single general topic, trust. Respondents were asked for their opinions on the honesty, respectfulness, courteousness, and general trustworthiness of the neighbors in their communities, their colleagues at work, and politicians. Questions included items on respondents' membership in community organizations and attendance at meetings, whether the respondents worked cooperatively with others on community issues, and whether they had ever contacted government officials regarding community concerns. Politicians were evaluated as to their respect for the citizenry and for their opponents, whether they made campaign promises that they did not intend to keep, and whether politicians would pay more attention to people like the respondent if elections were held more often. One section of the questionnaire asked respondents to gauge how participating in certain activities (attending religious services, following public affairs, voting) and having certain opinions (in favor of further integrating public schools, increasing Social Security spending, instituting term limits for Congress) would shape other people's impressions of them. Demographic variables include gender, race, employment status, and length of residency in the community.

American National Election Study: 2016 Pilot Study (ICPSR 36390)

This collection has not been fully processed by ICPSR at this time, and data are released in the format provided by the principal investigators. As the study is processed and given enhanced features by ICPSR in the future, users will be able to download the updated versions of the study. The American National Election Study (ANES): 2016 Pilot Study sought to test new instrumentation under consideration for potential inclusion in the ANES 2016 Time Series Study, as well as future ANES studies. Much of the content is based on proposals from the ANES user community submitted through the Online Commons page, found on the ANES home page. The survey included questions about preferences in the presidential primary, stereotyping, the economy, discrimination, race and racial consciousness, police use of force, and numerous policy issues, such as immigration law, health insurance, and federal spending. It was conducted on the Internet using the YouGov panel, an international market research firm that administers polls that collect information about politics, public affairs, products, brands, as well as other topics of general interest.

This dataset belongs to a three-part study on American representation conducted shortly before and after the 1958 congressional election (see also AMERICAN REPRESENTATION STUDY, 1958: CANDIDATES [ICPSR 7226] and AMERICAN REPRESENTATION STUDY, 1958: CANDIDATE AND CONSTITUENT, PARTY [ICPSR 7292]). The survey administered to the candidates was designed to elicit information on what they considered to be the most important issues of the campaign, their views on these issues, and their perceptions of the positions of their constituents. The candidates were also asked what influenced them, and what they felt influenced the outcome of the campaign. Derived measures calculate 85th Congress roll-call scores on social welfare, foreign involvement, and civil rights issues. Roll-call data and information on committee activities of the congressmen are also provided. The combined candidate and constituent files (this collection and ICPSR 7292) contain the same candidate information as in ICPSR 7226, but are structured around the district as unit of analysis. This data collection provides candidate and constituent data organized by incumbency status of candidates, while ICPSR 7292 is organized by party identification of the candidates. In addition to the survey information on the candidates, this collection contains data on constituents taken from the 1956, 1958, and 1960 AMERICAN NATIONAL ELECTION STUDIES (ICPSR 7214, 7215, and 7216) for 114 of the 146 districts. Demographic information on candidates includes sex, race, year of birth, size of birthplace, highest graduate degree, prior occupations, public offices previously held, several indices of spatial mobility, religious preference, and ethnic background.

This study is part of the American National Election Study (ANES), a time-series collection of national surveys fielded continuously since 1948. The American National Election Studies are designed to present data on Americans' social backgrounds, enduring political predispositions, social and political values, perceptions and evaluations of groups and candidates, opinions on questions of public policy, and participation in political life. As with all Time Series studies conducted during years of presidential elections, respondents were interviewed during the two months preceding the November election (Pre-election interview), and then re-interviewed during the two months following the election (Post-election interview). Like its predecessors, the 2016 ANES was divided between questions necessary for tracking long-term trends and questions necessary to understand the particular political moment of 2016. The study maintains and extends the ANES time-series 'core' by collecting data on Americans' basic political beliefs, allegiances, and behaviors, which are so critical to a general understanding of politics that they are monitored at every election, no matter the nature of the specific campaign or the broader setting. This 2016 ANES study features a dual-mode design with both traditional face-to-face interviewing (n=1,181) and surveys conducted on the Internet (n=3,090), and a total sample size of 4,271. In addition to content on electoral participation, voting behavior, and public opinion, the 2016 ANES Time Series Study contains questions about areas such as media exposure, cognitive style, and values and predispositions. Several items first measured on the 2012 ANES study were again asked, including "Big Five" personality traits using the Ten Item Personality Inventory (TIPI), and skin tone observations made by interviewers in the face-to-face study. For the first time, ANES has collected supplemental data directly from respondents' Facebook accounts. The post-election interview also included Module 5 from the Comparative Study of Electorial Systems (CSES), exploring themes in populism, perceptions on elites, corruption, and attitudes towards representative democracy. Face-to-face interviews were conducted by trained interviewers using computer assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) software on laptop computers. During a portion of the face-to-face interview, the respondent answered certain sensitive questions on the laptop computer directly, without the interviewer's participation (known as computer assisted self-interviewing (CASI)). Internet questionnaires could be completed anywhere the respondent had access to the Internet, on a computer or on a mobile device. Respondents were only eligible to compete the survey in the mode for which they were sampled. Demographic variables include respondent age, education level, political affiliation, race/ethnicity, marital status, and family composition.

The Carnegie Middle East Governance and Islam Dataset includes both individual-level and country-level variables. Data on individual-level variables are drawn from 56 surveys carried out in 14 Arab countries, Turkey, and Iran. Taken together, a total of 82,489 men and women were surveyed. Almost all of the surveys involved face-to-face interviews. Most of the surveys were carried out either as the first, second, and third wave of the Arab Barometer, the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth waves of the World Values Survey, or a project on attitudes related to governance carried out by Mark Tessler with funding from the National Science Foundation. The dataset also includes four earlier surveys, as well as variables based on 34 time-specific country-level characteristics, for example, Freedom House political freedom ratings; labor force attributes compiled by the World Bank, the United Nations and others; natural resource rents, also compiled by the World Bank; ratings on the United Nations Human Development Index; freedom of religion indices developed by the United States Department of State; and linguistic, ethnic and religious fractionalization indices compiled in a private research project. Demographic variables include age, sex, education, employment status, marital status, religion, and income.

This data collection is part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that evaluates the Reagan presidency and solicits opinions on a variety of political and social issues. Topics covered include the national economy, nuclear arms treaties between the United States and the Soviet Union, spending on space exploration, the shuttle program, federal spending on the military and defense programs, aid to the contras in Nicaragua, and whether certain aspects of a politician's personal life such as a serious medical condition or cheating on income taxes should be public knowledge. In addition, respondents were queried about their views on the candidates for the 1988 presidential election. Respondents were asked whether they had a favorable or unfavorable opinion of the various candidates, whom their party should nominate for president, whether the Republicans or the Democrats had a better group of candidates, and which candidate cared most about the needs of people like the respondent. Respondents who supported Gary Hart for the Democratic presidential nomination were telephoned again and asked an additional series of questions to determine whether disclosures by the media regarding improprieties in Hart's financing of his 1984 presidential campaign had changed their minds at all. Background information on individuals includes party affiliation, age, marital status, income, sex, religious preference, education, and race.

This study is the first module of an ongoing collaborative program of crossnational research among national election studies designed to advance the understanding of electoral behavior across polities. The data project, carried out in over 50 consolidated and emerging democracies, was coordinated by social scientists from around the world who cooperated to specify the research agenda, the study design, and the micro- and macro-level data that native teams of researchers collected within each polity. This collection currently comprises data from surveys conducted during 1996-2001 in Australia, Belarus, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Korea, Lithuania, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Ukraine, and the United States. The format includes a common questionnaire module and background (demographic) characteristics of respondents, coded to agreed-upon standards. These data have been merged into a single crossnational dataset with a companion supplementary weighted data file. Measures included in the study focus on three main issues. The first topic explored is the impact of electoral institutions, with questions about parliamentary versus presidential systems of government (levels of accountability, responsiveness), the electoral rules on casting/counting of votes (issues of fairness, impact of voting), and political parties (identification, ideological distinction). The second major issue covered is the nature of political and social cleavages and alignments explored by questions such as left-right issue orientation of respondents vs. political parties. Lastly, the collection covers the evaluation of democratic institutions and processes through measures such as efficacy in political parties, elected officials, and respondents' satisfaction with democracy. Additionally, data were collected on voter turnout, voter choice, and respondents' age, sex, education, employment, and income.

This study is the full release of 2001-2006 data from Module 2 of the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems. The Comparative Study of Electoral Systems is an ongoing collaborative program of crossnational research among national election studies designed to advance the understanding of electoral behavior across polities. The project, which is being carried out in over 50 consolidated and emerging democracies, was coordinated by social scientists from around the world who cooperated to specify the research agenda, the study design, and the micro- and macro-level data that native teams of researchers collected within each polity. This collection currently comprises data from surveys conducted in the countries of Albania, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, and the United States. Module 2 focuses on electoral institutions and political behavior, particularly on the fundamental principles of democratic governance: representation and accountability. It aims to examine how well different electoral institutions function as mechanisms by which citizens' views are represented in the policymaking process, and by which citizens hold their elected representatives accountable. This is accomplished by explicitly linking individual attitudes and behaviors to the political context across a variety of settings. The module added a new set of items on citizen engagement and cognition across demographic polities, and expanded the analyses of the first module to examine how voters' choices are affected by the institutional context within which those choices are made. The survey results have been compiled and supplemented with district-level information that provides insight into the respondent's political context, and macro-level data that detail the respondent's political system as a whole. At each level of data collection, the measurements used have been standardized to promote comparison. Demographic variables include age, sex, race, ethnicity, education level, marital status, employment status, occupation, household union membership, language, socioeconomic status, political party affiliation, political orientation, religious preference, frequency of religious attendance, household income, number of children and other members of the household, and type of residential area (e.g., urban or rural).
