Assessing the Impacts of Broken Windows Policing Strategies on Citizen Attitudes in Three California Cities: Redlands, Ontario and Colton, 2008-2009 (ICPSR 34427)

This study examined the impact that a six-month broken windows style policing crackdown on disorder had on residents of three California cities: Colton, Ontario and Redlands. The study investigated four questions:
- What is the impact of broken windows policing on fear of crime among residents of the targeted hot spots?
- What is the impact of broken windows policing on police legitimacy in the targeted hot spots?
- What is the impact of broken windows policing on reports of collective efficacy in the targeted hot spots?
- Is broken windows policing at hot spots effective in reducing both actual and perceived levels of disorder and crime in the targeted hot spots?
To answer these questions, a block randomized experimental design was employed to deliver a police intervention targeting disorder to 55 treatment street segments with an equal number of segments serving as controls.
Data were collected on the type and amount of crime before, during, and after implementation as well as interviews of residents before and after the crackdown in order to gauge their perception of its success.

This survey focused on the influence of education on respondents' attitudes toward a variety of issues, including crime, city services, police protection, neighborhoods, health-care coverage, taxes, public schools, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and government involvement in correcting class, gender, and race disparities. The survey also sought respondents' opinions on issues such as race relations, discrimination against women, racial balance in schools, laws against interracial marriages, housing discrimination law, racial profiling, and voting for a Black presidential candidate. Respondents were questioned on the comparative differences between Blacks and Whites in types of jobs held, housing, and level of income, and why Blacks were worse off than whites, the effects on property values of Blacks moving into White neighborhoods, and the high rate of unemployment and crime among Blacks as compared to Whites. Also explored were respondents' feelings about the death penalty, immigrants, other races, poor people, minority groups, affirmative action, homosexuality, television violence, censorship, and abortion. Questions on the respondents' educational background covered the types of elementary and secondary schools they attended and grades earned, level of education and degrees earned, and types of college(s) attended. Additional information gathered by the survey includes respondents' duration of residence in the tri-county area and at the current residence, place of previous residence, employment status, social class stratification, religious denomination, party preference, participation in social and political life, and knowledge of current affairs. Demographic information includes respondents' gender, age, marital status, race, and ethnicity.
Harnessing Existing Technologies to Mitigate Driving Distraction Among Law Enforcement Officers, Iowa, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Wyoming, 2019 (ICPSR 38994)
Nearly half of the law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in the United States were due to automobile crashes. Driver distraction has been identified as a common causal factor leading to the crash, with the primary source of distractions being the mobile computer. While there is plenty of literature on officer safety, what is lacking is an understanding of the needs of the officers to interact with the control or communication equipment while driving and how that interaction impacts distraction and, consequently, officer safety. To examine these issues, the research team conducted focus group discussions with law enforcement officers from local, county, and state agencies in four states. The two primary topics of discussion were:
- Officer requirements to operate different pieces of equipment while driving, and
- Different software and systems being used in patrol cars.
