American Health Values Survey II, [United States], 2019-2020 (ICPSR 38818)

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has a vision to build a Culture of Health (CoH) by making health a shared national priority, one valued and advanced by multiple stakeholders across all sectors of society. This vision embraces a very broadly integrated and comprehensive approach to health, one where well-being lies at the center of every aspect of American life. In 2014, the RWJF commissioned NORC at the University of Chicago to plan and conduct the first American Health Values Survey (AHVS) to understand the extent to which United States adults held views consistent with this vision. The idea was to explore which types of United States adults were more supportive and less supportive of the goal and what the differences were between the more and less supportive groups. To aid in the understanding of these differences, NORC developed a typology of United States adults based on their values and beliefs related to the CoH vision.

Using a large-scale national survey fielded in late 2015 and early 2016, NORC identified six major segments of the population of adults in the United States based on their differing health values and beliefs and developed detailed profiles of each segment that described their pattern of values and beliefs as well as their demographic, political and other characteristics. NORC subsequently replicated the typology development work in five RWJF Sentinel Communities across the nation and also developed a typology of rural America. The same segments, or similar ones, were common across various geographic areas of the United States. Four years have since passed, in which changes occurred in the country. RWJF in 2019 commissioned NORC to conduct a second national, cross-sectional survey (AHVS II) in late 2019 and early 2020.

American National Election Study: 1995 Pilot Study (ICPSR 6636)

A number of pilot studies have been conducted by the National Election Studies (NES) for the purpose of developing new instrumentation. The 1995 Pilot Study is part of this effort, which also includes studies conducted in 1979, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1991, and 1993. As in earlier pilot studies (except for 1979), the 1995 study respondents were a subset of the previous year's traditional time-series respondents. The study is a one-wave reinterview of a randomly selected subset of respondents with telephones from the fresh cross-section portion of the AMERICAN NATIONAL ELECTION STUDY, 1994: POST-ELECTION SURVEY [ENHANCED WITH 1992 AND 1993 DATA] (ICPSR 6507). The 1995 Pilot Study was conducted between August 3 and September 10, 1995. The content of the study reflects the NES commitment to improve measures of candidate evaluation, the impact of the campaign, values and predispositions, the comparative study of elections, and other responses to a stimulus letter calling for ideas for content sent to the user community on November 4, 1994. Specific topic areas in the study include: (1) an experiment using different measures of affective reactions to political figures, (2) a module of items being concurrently tested in many other nations as part of a comparative study of politics, (3) a set of 12 items asking respondents to make tradeoffs among programs, taxes, and the budget deficit, (4) a set of items designed to measure attitudes toward the environment and environmental policy, (5) a new measure of "humanitarianism," and (6) an extensive set of items regarding attention to the media intended to capture exposure to the political campaigns. In order to include all of the content, and to test between competing instrumentation, there were two forms of the questionnaire. Rosters of items, such as the thermometer, were randomized in administration to minimize order effects.

The 1998 Pilot Study focused on examining and improving the methodology used for future studies in the American National Election Studies series. The study provided an opportunity to test new instrumentation, fine-tune measurement of core concepts, and try out some innovative survey methods. The 1998 Pilot Study, conducted September 8 through November 3, 1998, marked the first time a study was conducted during an election season. Three high-profile gubernatorial contests in California, Illinois, and Georgia were used as a basis for testing instrumentation that can only be analyzed in the context of an electoral campaign and for investigating how to improve the election study's capacity to illuminate the impact of campaigns. Among the concepts covered in the study are political interest, knowledge, ideology, efficacy, trust, mobilization, issue attitudes/awareness keyed to actual campaigns, campaign interest, participation in a campaign, media use, candidate awareness, partisanship, vote intention, certainty of vote, and social context and communication. Several additional measures were piloted, including what part of the day the respondent tended to watch television, new social context and communication variables, need for evaluation, group mobilization, public mood, a new affirmative action variable, perceived tone of the campaign, awareness of campaign issues, and whether the respondent owned stock.

The Candidate Countries Eurobarometer (CCEB) series, first conducted in 2001, gathers information from the countries applying to become members of the European Union (EU) in a way that allows direct comparison with the standard Eurobarometer series carried out in the existing EU countries. The CCEB provides decision-makers and the European public with opinion data on the similarities and differences between the EU and the candidate countries. The CCEB continuously tracks support for EU membership in each country, and records changes in attitudes related to European issues in the candidate countries. This round of the CCEB surveys represents the first wave of surveys conducted in October 2001 in the 13 candidate countries: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Turkey. Respondents were queried about life satisfaction and expectations, native tongue and foreign languages spoken, European countries visited and worked in, political discussion with friends, media use, trust in institutions such as the written press and churches, and national and European identity. Respondents were further questioned on knowledge of the EU, its image, role, membership process, and meaning and importance in the respondent's life. Respondents were also asked their opinions on EU enlargement, including whether a country was worthy of membership and what advantages the respondent, various groups, and the EU would have should a particular country be granted membership. Additionally, respondents were queried on what, if any, fears they had concerning the building of the EU. They were also asked what resources they would use to obtain information on the EU, how they would prefer to obtain that information, and on which topics they would like to get more information. Lastly, respondents were asked if they had access to devices such as computers, mobile phones, and fax machines. Demographic and other background information includes age, year of birth, gender, nationality, marital status, age when stopped full-time education and level of education, occupation, whether the respondent received government aid, vote intention, religious affiliation and participation, number of people in the household, if the respondent is the head of the household, household income, ownership of durable goods, type of community, and region of residence.

This round of Candidate Country Eurobarometer survey queried respondents on the following major areas of focus: (1) the European Union and (2) Cultural Activities. For the first major area of focus, the European Union, respondents were asked for their opinion on their country's bid to join the EU and their benefits of membership in the EU, what role national government and the EU should play in policy areas, and the importance of political and social issues. Respondents were also questioned about foreign policy concerning the positive or negative roles of the EU and the USA in different areas of responsibility such as keeping peace in the world and fighting against poverty. For the second major topic, Cultural Activities, respondents were questioned on what television programs they watch, what radio programs they listen to, their computer usage, reading materials, musical preferences, attendance at cultural activities, and artistic activities. Respondents were also asked if they own various electronic equipment, books, and musical instruments. Demographic and other background information collected includes age, nationality, marital status, age at completion of full-time education, ownership of household durables, occupation, religion, household, income, party affiliation, gender, and household composition.

This poll, fielded July 9-16, 2007, is a part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that solicits public opinion on the presidency and on a range of other political and social issues. Respondents were asked whether they approved of the way George W. Bush was handling his job as president, whether they approved of the way Bush was handling the war in Iraq, foreign policy, the economy, and the United States campaign against terrorism. Respondents were also asked whether they approved of the way Congress was handling its job, whether they were pleased with what Democrats and Republicans were doing in Congress, for whom they would vote if the presidential election were held that day, in which primary they were planning to vote, and whether they were satisfied with the presidential candidates. Opinions were sought on the Democratic Party, the Republican Party, Michael Bloomberg, Bill Clinton, Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, John Edwards, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton. Questions about the war in Iraq included whether the United States was right in taking military action against Iraq, how respondents thought things were going for the United States in Iraq, whether the United States should increase the number of troops in Iraq, whether Congress should block funding for the war, and how likely another terrorist attack would happen in the United States. Additional questions addressed issues women face in the United States, abortion, health care, respondent voting history, how respondents received most of their news, the condition of the national economy, whether things in the country were on track, and the most important problem facing the country. This poll, fielded March 7-11, 2007, is a part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that solicits public opinion on the presidency and on a range of other political and social issues. This poll oversampled people who called themselves Republicans, providing an insight into the demographic characteristics and political perspectives of Republicans. All respondents were asked to say whether they approved of the way George W. Bush was handling his job as president and other issues such as foreign policy, to rate the condition of the national economy, to identify the most important problem facing the country, and to say whether they approved of the way United States Congress was handling its job. Several questions asked for respondents' opinions of the Democratic and Republican parties, the Bush administration, Vice President Dick Cheney, former President Bill Clinton, former Vice President Al Gore, and the 2008 presidential nominees. Respondents were asked how much attention they had been paying to the 2008 presidential election campaign, which candidate they would vote for if the election were being held that day, the ideal age of a president, and whether they thought Hillary Clinton made a mistake when voting for the Senate resolution authorizing military action in Iraq. Respondents who identified themselves as Republicans and Democrats were asked whether they had any close friends who belonged to the other party, whether their political counterparts shared the same goals and values, and whether they themselves had once belonged to the other party. These respondents were also asked about the qualities they looked for in their presidential nominee, which issues they felt most strongly about, and how often they visited political blog Web sites, listened to political call-in radio shows, and which cable news network they watched. Other questions asked about the situation in Iraq, including whether taking military action was the right thing to do, whether the number of troops should be increased, and whether Iran was a threat to the United States. Additional topics include respondents' opinions on the government, tax cuts, immigration, gay marriage, abortion, and Barry Bonds breaking Hank Aaron's record of 775 home runs. Demographic information includes sex, age, race, education level, household income, marital status, religious preference, frequency of religious attendance, type of residential area (e.g., urban or rural), political party affiliation, political philosophy, voter registration status and participation history, and the presence of children under 18 and household members between the ages of 18 and 24.

This poll, fielded August 27-31, 2010, solicited New York City residents' opinion on Michael Bloomberg's job as mayor, the most important problem facing New York City, David Paterson's handling of his job as governor, and whether they approved or disapproved of the way Barack Obama was handling his job as president. They were also queried on whether they heard about the plan to build a mosque and Islamic community center two blocks from Ground Zero of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, whether they favored or opposed the building of the mosque, whether they thought people should have the right to build a house of worship near Ground Zero, and whether they thought people should have the right to build a mosque near Ground Zero. Opinions were sought on New York Congressman Charles Rangel, whether they were familiar with the accusations associated with Rangel, how much truth there were to these accusations, what they thought Rangel should do going forward, and whether Rangel had higher or lower ethical standards compared to others in the Congress. They were asked whether they thought Arab Americans, Muslims, and immigrants from the Middle East were being singled out unfairly by people in this country, whether people they know had negative feelings towards Muslims because of the attack on the World Trade Center, whether respondents had any negative feelings towards Muslims because of the attack on the World Trade Center, whether they thought Muslim Americans are more sympathetic to terrorists, and whether they ever visited a mosque. Demographic information includes sex, age, race, education level, household income, marital status, religious preference, type of residential area (e.g., urban or rural), political party affiliation, political philosophy, religiosity, whether participant was living in New York City on September 11, 2001, how long they have lived in New York City, where they are getting most of their information pertaining to the planned mosque and Islamic community center, and voter registration status and participation history.

This data collection is part of a continuing series of semi-monthly surveys of individuals in Spain. Each survey consists of three sections. The first section collects information on respondents' attitudes regarding personal and national issues. This section includes questions on level of life satisfaction and frequency of relationships, as well as a rating of the importance of national issues. The second section varies according to the monthly topic, with this month's topic focusing on mass media. This section includes an inventory of the respondent's media-related household appliances, such as television sets, stereo equipment, and video cassette recorders. Among the issues investigated are the frequency and amount of time spent watching television, listening to radio, reading newspapers, magazines, and books, and attending concert and theater events. Information is also provided on respondents' preferences in programming or content and whether different media are experienced alone, in the company of others, or in conjunction with some other activity. In addition, the respondents' attitudes toward mass media in general and the perceived consequences on daily life are measured. The third section collects demographic data such as sex, age, religion, income, and place of residence.

The purpose of the Common Sense Census is to gather reliable data about media use of young American children (ages 0-8), and document how children's media environments and behaviors change over time. The goal of this Common Sense research study was to provide current information about parent media use and their perceptions of their children and teens' (ages 8-18) media use. Data is from a nationally representative, probability-based, and cross-sectional online survey that was taken by parents of children and teens ages 8- to 18-years-old. Participants answered questions about their media use and their perception of their tweens or teens' media use. Media use included watching television, movies, and videos; playing video games; listening to music; using social media, reading either print or electronic books; and using digital devices for other purposes, such as browsing websites, playing games, or any other activity. We also asked about computer, smartphone, and tablet (and similar device) use for work purposes. Demographics include age, household income, parent education, race/ethnicity, gender, household size, and parent/caregiver employment status.

The Community Healthy Marriage Initiative (CHMI) evaluation was designed to evaluate community-level impacts of various relationship and marriage education programs. This study compared three sites which received grant funding from the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) (Dallas, Texas; St. Louis, Missouri; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin) with three cities that did not receive grant-funding (Fort Worth, Texas; Kansas City, Missouri; and Cleveland, Ohio) to determine what impacts grant funding has on these types of programs. This collection includes two rounds of surveys, one conducted in 2007 and one conducted in 2009, for longitudinal comparison. Respondents were asked a series of questions regarding their knowledge of relationship and marriage education programs in their area, including where they had learned of the classes, what source of advertising they had heard or seen, whether they knew where the classes were held, and whether they had discussed the classes with someone else. Information was collected to gauge respondents' participation in these courses, including whether they had taken a class in the previous 18 months, how long they attended the courses, whether they had received other services as a result of attending the classes, and whether they had suggested the classes to someone else. Respondents were also queried on whether they would be interested in attending a relationship class or a parenting class. Additional topics included parental relationships with their children, and relationship quality. Demographic variables include relationship status, household composition, employment status, parental status, race, age, and household income.

Compilation of Middletown III and Middletown IV Data, 1977-1999 [Muncie, Indiana] (ICPSR 4604)

Middletown III was a replication of research done in 1924-1925 by Robert and Helen Lynd in Muncie, Indiana. Middletown III included the Family Roles Survey (1977), the High School Survey (1977, 1989), the Community Survey (1978), the Government Services Survey (1978), the Kinship Survey (1978), the Neighborhood Survey (1978), the Religion Survey (1978), the Women's Occupational Survey (1978), and the Recreation Survey (1982). Middletown IV was a 1999 replication of two of the most important surveys that had been conducted in 1924 and 1977: the Community Survey and the High School Survey. The High School Survey (1977, 1989, and 1999) queried respondents about the number of years they attended Muncie schools, membership in extra-curricular activities, sex education, curriculum, grades and schoolwork, books and magazines read that were not assigned, and future plans post-high school. Respondents were also asked about close friendships, work outside of school, activities on Sunday, and their opinions about their relationship with their parents, and several statements about personal, political, and social issues. For the Community Survey (1978, 1999), respondents were asked about their residence and living in Muncie, as well as job history, reasons to work, and the advantages gained from working. The survey also asked questions of respondents about spouse employment and vacation, household roles, activities, and expenses, as well as close friendships, important qualities in boys and girls, educational plans for their children, and opinions on special topics. For the Family Roles Survey (1978), respondents were asked to express their opinion in regard to raising a family in Muncie, spouse role performance and expectations, marital satisfaction, and close friendships. The Government Services Survey (1978) asked respondents about their participation in the 1976 presidential, 1974 Indiana congressional, and 1975 Muncie city elections, service in the armed forces, and housing. In addition, the survey asked respondents for their opinion in regard to unemployed citizens, welfare, the Muncie community, and government programs, as well as their awareness or use of certain programs. The Kinship Survey (1978) asked respondents to identify where and how long they lived at a location in relationship to Muncie. In addition, respondents were asked for demographic information about their spouse, mother and father (their own and their spouse's), siblings, cousins, and children, their relationship and interactions with them, including their participation in different types of activities together, giving or receiving of goods or services, and frequency of communication. The Neighborhood Survey (1978), queried respondents about their residence in a Muncie neighborhood and their intent to remain at or move from this location. Opinions were sought about the neighborhood and particular facilities visited, attended, or used most often. Respondents were also asked to identify whether relatives or friends lived in Muncie, the location of their residence, as well as their spouses' work location. Respondents scored their interactions with their closest relative, and identified relationships with friends and work associates. In the Religion Survey (1978), respondents provided information about their participation in political elections, what activities they enjoy, as well as their opinion in regard to quality of life, marital satisfaction, racial inequality, women's liberation, and their response when encountering a problem. In addition, respondents were asked about their religious behavior and philosophies, including practices such as prayer, fasting, and the teaching and study of different religions. For the Women's Occupational Survey (1978), respondents were queried about their views in regard to quality of life and marriage including number of times and age married, the status of the marriage, number of children born in each marriage, marital satisfaction, relationship with spouse, causes of disagreement with spouse, and household roles. Pertaining to occupation, respondents answered questions about job training and requirements, job satisfaction, and job discrimination. They also provided their opinions about how work had affected their relationships with their children and spouse. For the Recreation Survey (1982), respondents were queried about attending professional events, participating in sports and household activities, visiting particular recreational locations, owning recreational, electronic, or entertainment equipment, and playing a musical instrument. In addition, the survey posed questions about membership in a group or organization, vacations, religious behaviors, and books or magazines read. Respondents also provided their opinion about gender attributes pertaining to societal roles. Major demographic themes that may appear in one or more of the surveys include age, gender, race, birthplace, occupation and employment, income, social class, education, marital status, religious preference, number of friends or relatives in the city, number and ages of children or siblings, and household composition, as well as the topic of organizational memberships, political affiliation, time spent per day watching movies or television, and number of newspaper or magazine subscriptions. For the Community Survey (1978, 1999), Kinship Survey (1978), Neighborhood Survey (1978), and Women's Occupational Survey (1978), in addition to occupation, the data may also include Duncan Socioeconomic Index (SEI), Siegel Prestige, or industry classification codes.

The data were collected to assess levels of support among citizens of the Moscow Oblast for democratic rights, institutions, and processes, and to test several hypotheses about the democratic values within socialist political systems. The data cover a broad array of topics, including political tolerance, valuation of liberty, support for the norms of democracy, rights awareness, support for dissent, support for an independent media, support for the institution of competitive elections, and anti-Semitism. Questions were asked about the respondents' knowledge of current events in the Soviet Union, interest in politics, familiarity and contact with political leaders, level of political involvement, views on political issues, consumption of alcoholic beverages, and attitudes towards specific social, political, and ethnic groups. Demographic information includes age, education, occupation, birthplace, religion, and marital status. This data collection is comprised of responses from two sets of survey questionnaires, the basic Current Population Survey (CPS) and a survey administered as a supplement to the November 2008 CPS questionnaire on the topic of Civic Engagement. The Corporation for National and Community Service sponsored the November supplemental questions.

The CPS, administered monthly, collects labor force data about the civilian noninstitutional population aged 15 years old or older living in the United States. Moreover, the CPS provides current estimates of the economic status and activities of this population which includes estimates of total employment (both farm and nonfarm), nonfarm self-employed persons, domestics, and unpaid helpers in nonfarm family enterprises, wage and salaried employees, and estimates of total unemployment. Data from the CPS are provided for the week prior to the administration of the survey.

All persons eligible for the basic CPS survey were also eligible for the supplement survey. Self or proxy responses were allowed for the supplement, that is a single respondent could provide answers for themselves or provide answers for all eligible household members, provided the respondent him/herself was a household member 15 years of age or older.

The supplement questions sought to measure the level of civic engagement of individuals in the United States. Civic engagement is a broad concept that can be defined by one's level of or involvement in: empowerment and political action; groups and networks; trust and solidarity; information and communication; and social cohesion and inclusion. The supplement questions specifically related to people's level of communication with their friends and family, involvement and level of participation in their communities as well as organized groups, extent of political action and knowledge, extent of connections with other community members, and how often individuals get news and information from various media sources.

Demographic variables include age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, marital status, veteran status, educational background, occupation, industry, and income.

Dimensions and Use of the Scholarly Information Environment, 2001 (ICPSR 20241)

With this survey, researchers sought to obtain information regarding changing patterns of information use for teaching, learning, and research, and the implications of these changes on academic and research libraries. In collaboration with the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) and Outsell, Inc., the Digital Library Foundation (DLF) initiated a research process to understand how library use is changing and to support future investigation and analysis. The primary goal of the questionnaire was to collect data on the relevance of existing and possible future services, as well as on student and faculty perceptions of the library's value in the context of the scholarly information environment. Other objectives included determining (1) what information resources are used to support research, teaching, and learning, and (2) how those sources and services are located, evaluated, and used by faculty and students at different kinds of institutions. Faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students were surveyed at public and private research universities and private liberal arts colleges in fall 2001. Respondents were asked questions regarding specific locations from which they access information, the accessibility of information equipment, and usage of hardcopy or electronic materials or reference resources. In addition, the survey asked respondents to identify preferred sources of information, including library resources, and the overall importance of the medium of sources. Finally, respondents were asked questions in regard to time devoted to information access and collection, as well as the effects of potential barriers on information accessibility. Specific questions were addressed to faculty, researchers, and students regarding the use of teaching-related resources, coursework-related materials, and course information availability.

This survey focuses on the Netherlands Second Chamber parliamentary election of May 6, 1998. Part 1, Main Study, contains data from the first wave of interviews conducted before the election (March 30-May 5, 1998) and after the election (May 11-July 4, 1998), and a self-completion questionnaire given to respondents at the end of the second wave. Topics addressed during Wave 1 included: the respondent's interest in politics, the most important problems facing the nation, government policy satisfaction, attitudes toward voting, perception of public opinion poll results, political issues such as euthanasia, income differences, asylum seekers, European unification, ethnic minorities, and European Union (EU) membership, sympathy shown by political parties and politicians, political knowledge of leaders and coalitions, social and political goals, and the presence of a cultural community. Topics covered during Wave 2 included respondent's interest level in the campaign, electoral behavior, coalition preference, views on the importance of issues including nuclear plants, traffic, financial deficit, crime, health care, and the environment, satisfaction with democracy in the Netherlands, attention paid to regional differences, faith in prospective premiers, external and internal political efficacy, political cynicism, social isolation, acceptance of political decisions, civic competence and political participation, and social class images. Items in the self-completion questionnaire focused on trust in political institutions, including the police, parliament, and judges, media consumption, whether the respondent had been approached by a political party, whether he/she had tried to convince others to vote, and the demographic characteristics of those with whom the respondent discussed matters of importance. Background information on Part 1 respondents includes age, sex, political party, political orientation, electoral participation history, marital status, employment status, household income, religion, education, household composition, and demographic characteristics of parents and household members. Part 2, Nonresponse Study, Stimulus-Effect Study, and Corresponding Parts of Main Study, contains data from interviews conducted with respondents unwilling to participate in the Dutch Parliamentary Election Study (Nonresponse Study) and data from face-to-face or telephone interviews conducted with a random sample of respondents (Stimulus-Effect Study). The East Asian Social Survey (EASS) is a biennial social survey project that serves as a cross-national network of the following four General Social Survey type surveys in East Asia: the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS), the Japanese General Social Survey (JGSS), the Korean General Social Survey (KGSS), and the Taiwan Social Change Survey (TSCS), and comparatively examines diverse aspects of social life in these regions. Since its 1st module survey in 2006, EASS produces and disseminates its module survey datasets and this is the harmonized data for the 7th module survey, called 'Culture and Globalization in East Asia'.

Survey information in this module is the same topic as the second module of the EASS 2008, and it focuses on cultural norms and expectations of respondents. Respondents were asked about their exposure to East Asian cultural activities and rituals as well as opinion on family responsibilities and roles. Other topics include sources of international news and discussion frequency, countries or regions traveled, as well as where acquaintances live. Additionally, respondents were asked how accepting they would be of people from other countries as coworkers, neighbors, and in marriage. Information was collected regarding foreign practices, whether the respondent was working for a foreign capital company, and the economic environment. Respondents were also asked to assess their own proficiency when reading, speaking, and writing in English. This round of Eurobarometer surveys queried respondents on standard Eurobarometer measures, such as how satisfied they were with their present life, whether they attempted to persuade others close to them to share their views on subjects they held strong opinions about, whether they discussed political matters, how important the role of the European Union (EU) will be in their daily life over the next five years, and how they viewed the need for societal change. Additional questions focused on the respondents' knowledge of and opinions on the EU, including how well-informed they felt about the EU, what sources of information about the EU they used, whether their country had benefited from being an EU member, and the extent of their personal interest in EU matters. Other major areas of focus in the surveys included European Parliament elections, the single European currency (the euro), and respondents' experiences with financial services. Respondents were asked which television news programs they watched, which newspaper(s) they read, and how much attention they gave to politics, social issues, the European Union, the economy, sports, the environment, foreign policy, and culture. They were also asked whether they voted in the most recent European Parliament elections, what their reasons were for voting or not voting, and how they viewed the importance and power of the European Parliament in the European Union. A number of questions probed for respondents' knowledge and use of the euro, whether they worried about changing to the euro, and what they thought about the timing of the change to the euro and about legislation surrounding the euro. Those queried were asked how many European Parliament elections they voted in and if they were going to vote in the next one, how much impact the European Parliament had on their everyday lives, whether the European Parliament protected their interests, and which areas it should concentrate on in order to defend respondents' interests. Another set of questions, which focused on public safety, asked whether respondents felt safe in their neighborhoods, whether over the last year they had been attacked or seriously threatened and if so whether they reported it to the police, how often they personally encountered drug-related problems in their neighborhoods, whether somebody had ever broken into or tried to break into their homes, and if so, whether they subsequently took any protective measures. The survey also queried respondents about defense policy issues. Respondents were asked about the role of a European army, whether the EU should have a common defense and security policy, who should make decisions concerning defense in Europe, how this decision should be made within the EU, whether the European army should replace national armies, and what they thought about the EU swift intervention force of 60,000 men. Another focus of the survey was EU enlargement. Respondents were asked about measures that should be taken by the EU before enlargement, potential effects of this process, whether they were for or against enlargement, fears connected with building the EU, what countries they would be in favor of or against becoming new members, what criteria were important in deciding whether a country should join the EU, and whether after enlargement the EU decisions should be made unanimously or by majority. Additional questions queried respondents about the euro, the EU's budget spending, priorities for the EU initiatives, areas in which decisions should be made by national governments and jointly with the EU, a common foreign policy toward countries outside the EU, national versus pan-European pride, satisfaction with democracy, expectations for 2001, and level of trust in different institutions. Respondents were also asked how often they watched news on TV, read news in daily papers, and listened to the news on the radio. They also expressed their opinions on the amount and quality of coverage given to the EU on TV, in newspapers, and on the radio. This round of Eurobarometer surveys diverged from standard trend questions and queried respondents on (1) media exposure and information behavior, (2) European Union (EU) enlargement and its expected effects, and (3) support for European integration and decision-making in the EU. For the first topic, media exposure, respondents from each EU member country were asked to identify the specific types of media they accessed regularly (among a variety of television channels, daily and weekly newspapers, magazines, and radio stations) and the types of television programs they watched most frequently. In regard to information behavior, respondents were asked to identify what sources of media they used to obtain information about the EU, as well as which topics they preferred to find out about through television or daily newspapers. The survey also queried respondents about their opinion of how informatively, objectively, or favorably television or daily newspapers presented news about the EU. In addition, respondents were asked about the extent of their interest in certain topics and their desire to obtain more information. Such topics include issues pertaining to the EU, facts about EU candidate countries, the opinions of people residing in other EU countries, and the contents of the respondent's national constitution and the treaties of the EU. Respondents were also polled about their knowledge and use of information services provided by the EU, their satisfaction with information received from these types of services, and how they preferred to communicate suggestions to the EU. For respondents who use the Internet, the survey asked them to identify their Internet access location, how often and why they visit the EU Web site (Europa), and topics they would like to find on the Internet, while all respondents were asked whether they would communicate with EU decision-makers online. For the second topic, EU enlargement and its expected effects, the survey polled respondents about their knowledge of EU candidate countries, whether they had visited or plan on visiting these countries, and with which countries they have connections. Respondents were asked about their views regarding how well-informed they felt about EU enlargement, which member countries would benefit from enlargement, criteria for membership, the positive and negative effects of the inclusion of new countries and the immigration of citizens, satisfaction with life in the future, and their participation in political debate about enlargement. For the final topic, support for European integration and decision-making in the EU, respondents were asked to identify the two most positive and negative aspects of the EU, as well as evaluate their favor towards the EU, the EU's priorities and effectiveness as a government, and the influence individuals, groups, and EU member nations have upon decision-making within the EU. In addition, the survey polled respondents about their attachment towards their community, region, country and the EU, and whether an advantage or disadvantage exists for their country, as an EU member, in defending its own interests. The Eurobarometer series is a unique cross-national and cross-temporal survey program conducted on behalf of the European Commission. These surveys regularly monitor public opinion in the European Union (EU) member countries and consist of standard modules and special topic modules. The standard modules address attitudes towards European unification, institutions and policies, measurements for general socio-political orientations, as well as respondent and household demographics. In Eurobarometer 79.2 the standard Eurobarometer module is not included however respondent and household demographics are included. The special topic modules address such topics as agriculture, education, natural environment and resources, public health, public safety and crime, and science and technology.

This round of Eurobarometer surveys cover the following special topics: (1) internal market (2) cultural activities (3) non-urban road use, quality and tolls (4) science and technology, and (5) undeclared work and tax fraud. In regard to the internal market, opinions were collected on the frequency of online purchases, technology used to make orders, types of goods purchased, problems experienced with online shopping, reasons why respondents do not purchase products online from other EU member states and distrust of online retailers. Respondents were asked if they were ever employed in an European state other than their home country and ways to assess quality of professional service providers. In queries on cultural activities, the frequency in which respondents visit museums, the cinema, public libraries in their home country and other EU countries were recorded as well as why they did not participate in cultural activities. Respondents were also asked if they participated in expressive arts such as dancing, writing poems, handicrafts, or playing musical instruments. In regard to non-urban road tolls respondents are polled on the frequency in which they use roads outside of cities, the quality and amount of congestion on those roads, purpose for using those roads. Opinions were collected on whether the government should spend more money on roads and their willingness to pay higher tolls. In the science and technology section, there are questions about interests in and knowledge of developments in science and technology, whether family members have formal credentials in science and technology, their source of information about the latest developments. Additionally, respondents were asked about the usefulness of science and technology. Lastly as it relates to undeclared work in the European Union respondents were asked if they know people who do not declare income, their awareness of the risk of getting caught, the consequences of getting caught and opinions on reasons for doing undeclared work.

Demographic and other background information collected includes age, gender, nationality, marital status and parental relations, occupation, age when stopped full-time education, household composition, ownership of a fixed or a mobile telephone and other durable goods, difficulties in paying bills, level in society, and Internet use. In addition, country-specific data includes type and size of locality, region of residence, and language of interview (select countries).

Respondents were queried on the importance of initiatives to exit the economic crisis, thoughts about EU objectives and opinions on the crisis timeline. Respondents were asked who is best able to take action against effects of the financial crisis, questions about the public deficit and opinions on reform efforts. Additionally, respondents were asked their expectations of the EU, positive results of the EU and which values best represent the EU.

Respondents' opinions were collected regarding common forms of transportation, status of infrastructure in the respondent's country, reasons for using various forms of transportation, the use of autonomous vehicles, frequency and purpose of travel, and issues affecting rail, air, sea, and road transportation. Additional questions were asked regarding risks of cyber crime, respondents' use of the internet, how cyber security concerns have altered respondents' online behavior, prevention of online harassment of household children, and concern about and experience with being victimized in cyber crime. Respondents were also asked about the Value Added Tax (VAT) and how often they purchased goods from other EU member states. Further questions include knowledge of information regarding reimbursement for healthcare, and respondents' willingness to and opinions of policies related to blood, tissue, and organ donation.
