Historical Maps of India and Pakistan, 1955-1963 (ICPSR 37937)

Released/updated on: 2021-01-25
Geographic coverage: Pakistan, India
Time period: 1955-01-01--1963-12-31

The Army Map Service was a cartographic agency that focused on the compilation, publication, and distribution of military topographic maps. This collection contains georeferenced historical maps of India and Pakistan collected from 1955-1963 from the U502 series.

The maps are provided as TIFF files that include spatial references that can be read by GIS software. These maps are organized by segments which are then divided into square tiles. The corners of each of these tiles contain an anchor point with corresponding coordinates alongside additional anchor points like a: coastal region, legend, glossary, scale, and a location diagram.

Geoprivacy Attitudes and Personal Location Masking Strategies of Internet Users, California, 2017-2018 (ICPSR 37870)

Released/updated on: 2020-10-13
Geographic coverage: California
Time period: 2017-09-01--2018-04-30
This study contains the results of an online survey testing geoprivacy-related attitudes and behavior among adult California internet users. The major goals of this project are to examine public attitudes towards geoprivacy and the extent to which Internet users attempt to obscure or mask their locations. This project specifically tests the propensity of individuals to provide a precise and accurate home location when prompted. Hypothesized intervening variables for predicting personal location masking behavior collected in this survey are rural location, previous privacy infringement, experience with hacking or identity theft, and knowledge of location identifying power. The survey achieved a total of 214 responses, with 113 respondents from a probability postal address-based sample and 101 respondents from an open online sample.

This study was a systematic assessment of the impacts of foreclosures and crime levels on each other, using sophisticated spatial analysis methods, informed by qualitative research on the topic. Using data on foreclosures and crime in District of Columbia and Miami-Dade County, Florida from 2003 to 2011, this study considered the effects of the two phenomena on each other through a dynamic systems approach.

Atlas of Historical County Boundaries Web Site (ICPSR 170)

Released/updated on: 2007-01-15
Geographic coverage: United States
This Web site provides online access to the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries. A project of the William M. Scholl Center for Family and Community History at the Newberry Library in Chicago, the Atlas describes and maps every change in the boundaries of all United States counties from the early 1600s to 2000. In addition, the Atlas compiles and maps all changes in colonial or territorial and state boundaries, including the evolution of the states, plus county name changes, unsuccessful proposed counties, and attachments of unorganized counties and non-county areas to operational counties. Along with a detailed bibliography, citations to the primary sources for each change, and an explanation of different aspects of the Atlas project, the Web site enables users to view historical state and county maps and to download historical state and county shapefiles.

Comparison of Methods for Learning Choropleth Maps [1988-1990: United States] (ICPSR 9759)

Released/updated on: 2006-01-12
Geographic coverage: United States
The purpose of this study was to gather information on how people learn choropleth maps and to determine which of various computer display methods is most appropriate for learning this type of map. Software was developed to enable users to explore data commonly portrayed as a choropleth map. The software was then tested in controlled experiments using undergraduates at the University of Kansas. The design for Experiments I and II, which explored reactions to the sequencing of parts of a map as compared to the more traditional method of displaying a map all at once, consisted of formal and informal portions. In the formal portion, the actual effectiveness of traditional and sequenced maps was examined. The speed and accuracy of information acquisition and retention (memory) of subjects was the focus of this phase. In the informal portion, subjects viewed several display methods and (1) picked their most and least preferred methods, (2) explained their preferences, and (3) suggested alternative display methods. Dataset 1 contains data collected in association with the publication listed below. Datasets 2 and 3 consist of data from Experiments I and II, respectively, while Dataset 4 is a text file containing the verbal protocols used for Experiment I.
