This collection includes county-level data from the United States Censuses of Agriculture for the years 1840 to 2012. The files provide data about the number, types, output, and prices of various agricultural products, as well as information on the amount, expenses, sales, values, and production of machinery. Most of the basic crop output data apply to the previous harvest year. Data collected also included the population and value of livestock, the number of animals slaughtered, and the size, type, and value of farms. Part 46 of this collection contains data from 1980 through 2010. Variables in part 46 include information such as the average value of farmland, number and value of buildings per acre, food services, resident population, composition of households, and unemployment rates.

Historical Demographic Data of Southeastern Europe: Orasac, 1824-1975 (ICPSR 32404)

The data in the Historical Demographic Data of Southeastern Europe series derive primarily from the ethnographic and archival research of Joel M. Halpern, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, in southeastern Europe from 1953 to 2006. The series is comprised of historical demographic data from several towns and villages in the countries of Bosnia, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia, all of which are former constituent republics of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The data provide insight into the shift from agricultural to industrial production, as well as the more general processes of urbanization occurring in the last days of the Yugoslav state. With an expansive timeframe ranging from 1818 to 2006, the series also contains a wide cross-section of demographic data types. These include, but are not limited to, population censuses, tax records, agricultural and landholding data, birth records, death records, marriage and engagement records, and migration information.

This component of the series focuses exclusively on the Serbian village of Orasac and is composed of 64 datasets. These data record a variety of demographic and economic information between the years of 1824 and 1975. General population information at the individual level is available in official census records from 1863, 1884, 1948, 1953, and 1961, and from population register records for the years of 1928, 1966, and 1975. Census data at the household level is also available for the years of 1863, 1928, 1948, 1953, and 1961. These data are followed by detailed records of engagement and marriage. Many of these data were obtained through the courtesy of village and county officials. Priest book records from 1851 through 1966, as well as death records from 1863 to 1976 and tombstone records from 1975, are also available. Information regarding migrants and emigrants was obtained from the village council for the years of 1946 through 1975. Lastly, the data provide economic and financial information, including records of individual landholdings (for the years of 1863, 1952, 1966, and 1975), records of government taxation at the individual or household level (for 1813 through 1840, as well as for 1952), and livestock censuses (at both the individual and household level for the years of 1824 and 1825, and only at the individual level for the years of 1833 and 1834).

Adjustments to Resource Depletion: The Case of American Agriculture -- Kansas, 1874-1936 (ICPSR 7594)

This data collection contains time series data on a selected set of agricultural variables for 105 Kansas counties over the period 1874-1936. The study, part of a larger research project on American agriculture funded by the National Science Foundation, was prepared at Yale University as Version 2 of KANATICS (a Kansas Agricultural Time Series/Cross Section), which extends and corrects the first version, a 1977 working paper. The series data in Part 1 are an exact representation of the data found in various quarterly, annual, and biennial reports of the Kansas State Board of Agriculture. Data include information on acreage sown, number of bushels and value of different field crops harvested, and number and value of livestock. Part 2 contains consolidated and manipulated series data, including manipulations of the series in Part 1, e.g., the value per bushel of various field crops, adjusted total cultivated acres, adjusted field crop income, and prices per animal.

Rural Development in Deccan Maharashtra, India: Village Panel Study, 1942-1977 (ICPSR 9308)

This data collection examines the economic and occupational changes experienced over a 25-year period by families living in Sugao, a village in the state of Maharashtra, India. The residents of this village were surveyed in 1942 and 1958 to uncover aspects of their daily lives and again in 1977 to explore more fully the effects of the economic attraction of Bombay, an industrialized metropolis 150 miles away, on village life. Data were collected at both the individual and family levels. Respondents were queried on such topics as caste, gender, age, marital status, education, residence, primary, secondary, and tertiary occupations, location of occupation, years employed at occupation, income, work habits, and job classification. Families reported on their size and composition, members living outside the village, economic relationships with others, acquisition, size, and construction of housing unit, and home improvements. Information was also gathered on family income sources and, in particular, on the amount of money and goods remitted to the village by family members living and working in Bombay. Agricultural issues explored include family labor provided for farming, amount of irrigated and non-irrigated land, productivity of the land, and the type, number, and location of livestock.

State Farms in European Russia, 1917: Districts and Provinces (ICPSR 8377)

This data collection aggregates district- and province-level data from the All-Russian Agricultural and Land Census of 1917 to provide indicators of farm management, production, and consumption in revolutionary European Russia. Information is provided on two models of collective land management and agricultural organization that existed in European Russia between the revolutions of 1905 and 1917. The data allow for analysis of agricultural organization and resource allocation in both private and state enterprises. The study is available in two parts. Part 1, Province Level, contains data on 21 provinces only. Part 2, District Level, contains information on 332 districts and 37 provinces. Districts comprising the provinces in Part 1 are also contained in Part 2. Information is provided on the same 26 variables in both parts. The variables include the portion of privately-owned farms with unsown areas for crops, the portion of privately-owned farms without any livestock, the portion of privately-owned farms without working livestock, the portion of privately owned farms with land for rent, the number of hired workers on the farms with land for rent, the amount of arable land on one property (measured in desyatina, which is roughly equal to 2.7 acres), the amount of sown area on one property (in desyatina), the amount of ploughed field on one property, the quantity of hired labor on one property, the quantity of working livestock on one property, the quantity of productive livestock on one property, the number of ploughs per farm property, the number of farming-related working tools on one property, the number of hired workers per desyatin of sown land, the number of working livestock per desyatin of sown land, the number of productive livestock per desyatin of sown land, the number of ploughs per desyatin of sown land, the number of farming-related working tools per desyatin of sown land, the share of ploughs per privately-owned, arable landholdings, the portion of hayfields per privately-owned, arable landholdings, the portion of forested area per privately-owned, arable landholdings, the portion of sown area per privately-owned, arable landholdings, the portion of privately-owned crops in the entire sown area, the portion of privately-owned, arable land in the total area of arable land, the percentage of privately-owned sown area tilled at own expense, and the share of sown grassland in the entire sown area under private ownership.

Massachusetts Tax Valuation Records, 1771 (ICPSR 7734)

This collection contains the names and descriptions of taxable property of nearly 38,000 individuals who resided in 152 Massachusetts towns in 1771. Data items include type and value (in pounds, shillings, and pence) of real estate, buildings, and other assets, as well as tabulation of livestock and farm commodities produced. Specific variables pertaining to value of real estate, buildings, and other assets include annual worth of whole real estate, tons of vessels, value of trading stock, value of factorage or commissions, value of money lent at interest, and types of buildings (e.g., tanhouses, stillhouses, warehouses, gristmills, superficial feet of wharf, ironworks). With respect to tabulation of livestock, variables provide information on number of horses, oxen, cows, goats, sheep, and swine. Data describing farm commodities cover acres of pasture, number of cows the pasture will keep, acres of tillage, bushels of grain produced per year, barrels of cider produced per year, acres of salt marsh, tons of salt marsh hay per year, acres of English and upland mowing land, tons of English and upland hay per year, acres of fresh meadow, and tons of fresh meadow hay per year. Other variables specify taxpayer name, title (e.g., widow, doctor, blacksmith), and status of taxpayer (e.g., decedent, landlord, free Negro).

Agricultural and Demographic Records of 21,118 Rural Households Selected from the 1860 Manuscript Censuses (ICPSR 9117)

Demographic, occupational and economic information for over 21,000 rural households in the northern United States in 1860 is provided in this dataset. The data were obtained from the manuscript agricultural and population schedules of the 1860 United States Census. Variables include farm values, livestock inventories, and crop production figures for the households that owned or operated farms (over half the households in the study), as well as values of real and personal estate, color, sex, age, literacy, school attendance, occupation, place of birth, and parents' nationality of all individuals residing in the sampled households.
