Annual Health Survey (AHS), India, 2007-2012 (ICPSR 38097)

The Annual Health Survey (AHS), conducted by the Government of India between July 2010 and May 2013, investigates maternal and child health in nine states: Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. These states constitute about 70 percent of neonatal deaths in India and about one-in-five neonatal deaths globally. The AHS consists of a three-round panel that interviewed over 4 million households in each round, as well as a one-time Clinical, Anthropometric, and Bio-Chemical Survey (CAB). The data were originally released to the public in 2015 as a set of 45 .csv files. The .csv files are included in a restricted-use zipped package as part of the ICPSR release (see dataset 21).

The survey focused on topics such as household composition, caste, fertility, family planning, pre- and post-natal care, breastfeeding, infant mortality, illness, disease, disability, and health care practices. Demographic information includes sex, age, education, occupation, marital status, household size, and religion. The CAB files contain biometric data including but not limited to height, weight, blood pressure, hemoglobin, pulse, and blood glucose.

Potential data users should note that the public-use and restricted-use versions of the datasets are the same except for the masking of day component variables for certain dates in the public-use versions of the files (please see the Description of Variables section for full details). Therefore, only researchers with a limited set of research questions that require full birth, marriage, and death dates will need to apply for the restricted-use versions of the data files.

Additionally, because the final data files are very large and potentially very time consuming to analyze on personal computers, researchers have the option to download ten-percent samples of each file (see datasets 3, 4, 7, 8, 11, 12, 15, 16, 19, and 20). These samples contain the same variables as the original files but only ten percent of the records. The samples were determined by taking a randomly selected ten percent of households in each district. P.I. codebooks were not produced for these samples. Please note that the ten-percent samples for each dataset were selected independently, so it is not advised to merge across datasets within the AHS using these samples, as the match rates will be very low.

Washington, DC, Metropolitan Area Drug Study (DC*MADS), 1992: Drug Use Among DC Women Delivering Live Births in DC Hospitals (ICPSR 2347)

The Washington, DC, Metropolitan Area Drug Study (DC*MADS) was conducted in 1991, and included special analyses of homeless and transient delivering live births in the DC hospitals. DC*MADS was undertaken to assess the full extent of the drug problem in one metropolitan area. The study was comprised of 16 separate studies that focused on different sub-groups, many of which are typically not included or are underrepresented in household surveys.

The DC*MADS: Drug Use Among Women Delivering Livebirths in DC Hospitals was designed to examine the nature and extent of drug use among women delivering live births in eight Washington, DC, hospitals participating in the study. Data from the questionnaires include prenatal care, health problems during pregnancy, pregnancy drug use history, needle use, polysubstance use, patterns of use, respondent's general experiences with drug use, including perceptions of the risks and consequences of use, occurrence of psychological and emotional problems, income and insurance coverage, treatment experiences, and maternal and infant outcomes. Medical records were abstracted from the women and their infants to document medical problems. Abstracted data on the mothers included demographics, discharge diagnoses, disposition at discharge, and results of urine screens. Abstracted data on infants included delivery information, status at discharge, discharge diagnoses/procedures, and first urine toxicology screen results.

National Pregnancy and Health Survey: Drug Use Among Women Delivering Live Births, 1992 (ICPSR 2835)

The primary objective of the National Pregnancy and Health Survey (NPHS) was to produce national annual estimates of the percentages and numbers of mothers of live newborns in the United States who used selected licit and illicit drugs in the 12 months prior to delivery. A further objective was to describe patterns of prenatal substance use among demographic subgroups of women. Information on demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, obstetric history, and drug treatment of women who delivered infants at sampled hospitals was obtained through an interviewer-administered questionnaire, while data on substance use before and during pregnancy were collected through a questionnaire completed by the respondent and concealed from the interviewer. Respondents were asked about use of the following substances: alcohol, amphetamines, analgesics, cocaine, crack cocaine, barbiturates, hallucinogens, hashish, heroin, marijuana, methadone, methamphetamine, sedatives, stimulants, tobacco, and tranquilizers. Additionally, information was collected on the respondent's pregnancy, prenatal care, delivery, previous pregnancies, and background. Additional data were obtained from the mothers' and infants' medical records. Urine specimens collected routinely by the hospital on obstetric admissions were tested for selected drugs. Finally, in a subsample of six hospitals, hair specimens were requested from respondents to evaluate the potential of hair as a source of toxicological data in future studies.

This collection provides information on live births in the United States during calendar year 2002. The natality data in these files are a component of the vital statistics collection effort maintained by the federal government. Part 1, United States File, contains data on births occurring within the United States to United States residents and nonresidents, while Part 2, United States Territories File, contains data on births occurring in the United States territories of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands. Geographic variables describing residence for births include the state, county, city, county and city population size, metropolitan statistical area (MSA), primary metropolitan statistical area (PMSA), consolidated metropolitian statistical area (CMSA), New England County metropolitan area (NECMA), and metropolitan/nonmetropolitan county. Other variables include place of delivery, person in attendance, live-birth order, and medical and health data such as the number of prenatal visits, tobacco and alcohol use during pregnancy, method of delivery, medical risk factors, and infant health characteristics. Birth and fertility rates and other statistics related to this study can be found in the National Vital Statistics Report in the codebook documentation. Demographic variables include the child's sex, birthweight, and date of birth, the mother and father's age, race, and ethnicity, as well as the mother's place of birth, marital status, education level, and nation of origin.

This data collection consists of six data files, which can be used to determine infant mortality rates in the United States in 1995. For the first time, data for Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam were included. Another change in 1995 is a change in format of the linked files. They are now released in two different formats, period data and birth cohort data. This collection represents the period data. Parts 1 and 2 are the Denominator files for the United States and for Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam, respectively. These files consist of all births in 1995. Variables in these files include year of birth, state and county of birth, characteristics of the infant (age, sex, race, birth weight, gestation), characteristics of the mother (Hispanic origin, race, age, education, marital status, state of birth), characteristics of the father (Hispanic origin, race, age, education), pregnancy items (prenatal care, live births), and medical data. A new variable in the Denominator files for 1995 is clinical estimate of gestation. Parts 3 and 4 are the Numerator files. They provide records of all infant deaths that occurred in 1995 linked to their corresponding birth certificates, whether the birth occurred in 1995 or 1994. Variables in these files include age at death, underlying cause of death, autopsy, place of accident, infant death identification number, exact age at death, day of birth and death, and month of birth and death. New variables in the linked Numerator files for 1995 include a weight and a clinical estimate of gestation. Parts 5 and 6 are the "unlinked" files. Data provided in this collection were gathered to evaluate the effectiveness of a five-year program demonstrating regionalization of perinatal health care for mothers and infants. There are three distinct types of data in the collection. The first consists of records of live births in eight program regions and eight comparison regions. Included in these records are data on the size and type of institution of birth, birthweight, number of previous births and pregnancies, gestational age, and method of delivery. Also provided are demographic data such as age, race, educational level, and marital status of the mother. The unit of analysis is the live birth. The second type of data in the collection consists of matched birth and death data for infants, using the same geographical coverage as the live birth data. Each record contains the data provided in the live birth data, plus information such as the place of death, age at death, and cause of death. The unit of analysis is infant deaths for which birth data are available. The third type of data are derived from a survey of infant health at one year of age. Included in this are data on employment, education, and previous pregnancies of the mother, plus information on pre- and post-natal hospitalization, medical care, and infant health. Additional data are provided for a test, administered to each infant, of adaptive, gross and fine motor, and receptive language development.

The second of six province-wide surveys of married women in Taiwan was conducted in 1967 to examine changes since 1965 (see KAP I, ICPSR 6862) regarding knowledge of, attitudes toward, and practice of contraception. Data were again collected regarding family relations, fertility, and family planning, along with family demographics. In addition, detailed information was gathered on each pregnancy and on topics such as the total number of live births, fetal deaths, induced abortions, and sterilization. Demographic information such as age, education, employment, and family history who collected for both husband and wife.

National Maternal and Infant Health Survey, 1988: Longitudinal Follow-up, 1991 (ICPSR 6401)

This follow-up to the NATIONAL MATERNAL AND INFANT HEALTH SURVEY, 1988 (NMIHS) (ICPSR 9730) consists of three components that provide information on early childhood morbidity and health. The Live Birth Survey (Part 1) obtained data on national health issues affecting children, such as child development, effects of low birth weight, childhood injury, child care, pediatric care, health insurance coverage, child safety, and acute and chronic childhood illnesses. For the Medical Provider Survey (Part 12), respondents to the Live Birth Survey were asked to provide the names of all medical providers and hospitals where their children were diagnosed, treated, and/or admitted. Each health care provider was asked to supply information on its organization, the child's health status and history, and each visit or hospitalization. The Fetal and Infant Death Survey (Part 21) interviewed women who were identified through the 1988 NMIHS as having lost a fetus or an infant during the study period. These respondents were reinterviewed to gather information about their health and about any pregnancies since their loss in 1988. The 1991 follow-up data can be merged with data from the 1988 NMIHS, which was designed to explore factors that cause negative pregnancy outcomes.

National Medical Expenditure Survey, 1987: Survey of American Indians and Alaska Natives, Preliminary Hospital Stays Data [Public Use Tape 23.4P] (ICPSR 6220)

The National Medical Expenditure Survey (NMES) series provides information on health expenditures by or on behalf of families and individuals, the financing of these expenditures, and each person's use of services. The Survey of American Indians and Alaska Natives (SAIAN) was designed in collaboration with the Indian Health Service (IHS), and used the same data collection instruments, interview procedures, and time frame as the NMES Household Survey component. However, the SAIAN differed from the Household Survey in several respects. The SAIAN sample was interviewed only three times and was not given the supplements on long-term care, caregiving, and care-receiving. Also, SAIAN respondents were asked additional questions on topics such as use of IHS facilities and traditional medicine, and were given a modified self-administered questionnaire with separate versions for adults and children. Interviewers for the SAIAN were mainly American Indians or Alaska Natives, and about 20 percent of the interviews were not conducted entirely in English. Of these, approximately 40 percent were conducted entirely in the native language of the respondent. Public Use Tape 23.4P contains information and related documentation on inpatient hospital stays in calendar year 1987. Variables include the date respondent entered the hospital, date discharged, nights in the hospital, days in the hospital, reason for entry, and surgery performed. Information is also provided on whether a baby was born, the type of birth, and the baby's condition at birth. Additional data cover the type of hospital (Veterans Administration or Indian Health Service). Demographic information such as age, race, and sex is also included.

The purposes of the survey were to assess the accuracy of birth certificates, to examine trends in births compared to earlier years, and to enlarge the range of information included in the vital registration system.
