Mobile Game Addiction and Academic Achievement among Senior High School Students: A Convergent Mixed-Methods Study in a Philippine Public School (ICPSR 309017)

Abstract

This study employed a Convergent Mixed-Methods Design to examine how mobile gaming influences students’ behaviour, study habits, physical well-being, and academic obligations within a senior high school educational context. The quantitative component involved 58 Grade 11 students from Section X in the Philippines who answered a 10-item Likert-scale survey assessing gaming habits, academic distractions, sleep problems, physical symptoms, and coping strategies. Data were analyzed using weighted means, frequency distributions, and Pearson’s correlations. The qualitative component consisted of semi-structured interviews with ten purposively selected participants. The thematic analysis revealed three major themes: (1) gaming for enjoyment and escape, (2) physical discomfort and sleep loss, and (3) difficulty managing academic responsibilities alongside failed attempts at self-regulation. Findings indicated that greater gaming involvement was associated with reduced focus, sleep deprivation, decreased motivation, and neglect of academic tasks. Quantitative results revealed a moderate negative relationship between mobile game addiction and academic performance (r = −.52, p < .001). Qualitative narratives further explained how sleep loss, cognitive fatigue, and reinforcement-driven habits contributed to academic disengagement despite students’ awareness of negative consequences. The study highlights the importance of digital literacy programs, structured guidance interventions, and school-based strategies that promote responsible gaming habits and academic self-regulation among learners.

Effects of Instructional Message Tone on Student Participation in Philippine Online Learning: A Quasi-Experimental Study (ICPSR 308844)

This study examined the association between invitation message tone and student participation in digitally mediated learning environments. Using a field-based quasi-experimental design, 40 students in the Philippines were assigned through an alternating allocation procedure to receive either a formal, context-rich invitation or a brief informal message directing them to the same online task. Participation was measured at the individual level through link activation, task completion, and response timing using automated digital tracking. Results showed higher completion rates and faster response patterns in the formal message condition. Completion reached 100% in the formal condition compared to 50% in the informal condition (χ²(1, N = 40) = 13.33, p < .001, V = .58). These findings show that message structure is associated with how learners respond to academic requests in digitally mediated environments. While limited by a small sample size and context-specific design, the study provides applied evidence consistent with principles of transactional distance and teaching presence. The findings suggest that low-effort improvements in communication design may support participation in asynchronous open and distance learning systems.

This study aimed to address the communication needs of Spanish speakers with aphasia by helping them learn scripted sentences using open-source software. The core of learning scripted sentences is to support people with aphasia to learn daily-life sentences to participate in their communities. This study had two specific aims.

First, to develop a scripted sentence treatment repository in collaboration with stakeholders through an iterative design process. Scripted sentences were designed with and for Spanish speakers with aphasia to ensure that treatment resources were linguistically and culturally appropriate.

Second, to examine the acceptability, usability, and preliminary efficacy of scripted sentence training delivered via open-source software. Participants completed baseline, treatment, and follow-up phases (~13 sessions each), learning a set of sentences (~45 each) from the repository in a single-subject multiple baseline design. Participants and their care partners were interviewed regarding their perceptions of acceptability, usability, and preliminary efficacy. Participants also completed the Client Satisfaction Questionnaire-8 and the System Usability Scale.

The way doctors communicate with patients during office visits can affect the quality of care. Studying conversations between doctors and patients can help doctors improve their communication skills.

To study conversations, researchers rely on written records, or transcripts, of office visits. They read the transcripts and give each conversation topic a label. For example, topics may include smoking or pain. But labeling topics in this way may take a lot of time.

In this project, the research team created and tested a new method to make this work easier using natural language processing, or NLP. With NLP, computer programs interpret written language. NLP methods use a process called machine learning, where computer programs use data to learn how to perform different tasks with little or no human input.

There is increasing evidence that promoting social-emotional learning and positive teacher-student relationships can prevent school violence. Many schools are turning to restorative practices to promote safe schools. When engaging in restorative practices, the emphasize focuses on learning and growth. When harm has occurred, restorative practices emphasize communication and accountability. Restorative practices in schools have been associated with decreased bullying and school violence, improvements in positive school climate and decreased use of suspensions. The current study presents implementation and impact findings of a cluster randomized control trial examining a school-wide restorative practices model called Circle Forward.

This collection represents the first stage of a major longitudinal effort to provide trend data about critical transitions experienced by students as they leave elementary school and progress through high school and into college or their careers. The 1988 eighth-grade cohort will be followed at two-year intervals as this group passes through high school and postsecondary education. The longitudinal data collected will yield policy-relevant information about educational processes and outcomes, early and later predictors of dropping out, and students' access to programs and equal opportunity. The study has four types of data files. The Parent Component was designed to collect information about the factors that influence educational attainment and participation, including questions exploring family background and socioeconomic conditions and character of the home educational system. The School Administrator component was designed to gather general descriptive information about the educational settings in which the surveyed students were enrolled in the winter and spring of 1988. These data were collected from the chief administrator of each base-year school and concern school characteristics, grading and testing structure, school culture and academic climate, program and facilities information, parental interactions and involvement, and teaching staff characteristics. The Student Component collected information on school work, aspirations, social relationships, and basic achievement areas such as reading, mathematics, science, and social studies. The Teacher Component provided data that could be used to analyze the behaviors and outcomes of the student sample. Teachers were surveyed about the base-year students' characteristics and performance in the classroom, curriculum and classes for eighth graders, and teacher demographics, professional characteristics, and relationships with other teachers, students, and parents.

Expanding Children’s Early Learning from Pre-K to Third Grade (ExCEL P3) Study (ICPSR 238462)

MDRC conducted the Expanding Children’s Early Learning (ExCEL) P3 study in partnership with the Boston Public Schools, the University of Michigan, and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. ExCEL P3 explored several leading approaches for sustaining children’s early preschool gains. These approaches include addressing the full range of relevant skills, improving instructional alignment, boosting the magnitude of early impacts, and promoting quality in the years after preschool. ExCEL P-3 takes advantage of a special opportunity in the Boston Public Schools (BPS) to explore factors affecting children’s outcomes.  BPS phased in a system-wide integrated curriculum for preschool through 2nd grade that emphasizes the need for instruction in each grade to build on the lessons and skills that children learned in the previous grade. This curriculum is called Focus and is an innovative approach that scaffolds both the content and mode of instruction as children progress from K1 (BPS prekindergarten), to K2 (BPS kindergarten), to first and second grade. The study began in the Fall of 2016 by recruiting 21 schools and 10 community-based preschool providers. Within those schools and centers, the team enrolled prekindergarten teachers and students into the study. The research team collected several data sources from participants, including child assessments, classroom observations, teacher reports on children, teacher surveys, teacher reports on students, and parent surveys. Data were collected in fall and spring of prekindergarten, fall and spring of kindergarten, spring of first grade, and winter of fifth grade. The Higher Education Randomized Controlled Trial (THE-RCT) study aims to capitalize on existing data from postsecondary education RCTs to foster substantive and methodological scholarship and encourage teaching and learning opportunities. The cornerstone of THE-RCT is a restricted access file (RAF). The initial version contains individual-participant data from more than 25 of MDRC's higher education RCTs covering 50 institutions and over 50,000 students. The data were originally collected as part of different randomized controlled trial evaluations of a variety of higher education interventions. The data were collected for different student samples, at different times, and in different locations for each study.

The data were collected from four data sources: 1. Baseline: Baseline student demographic data (e.g., gender, race/ethnicity, age, etc.) were gathered, either via a survey administered to students upon joining the study (but prior to random assignment) or from study colleges' administrative records; 2. College Transcript: Student transcript data (e.g., enrollment, credits attempted, credits earned, GPA) were provided by the study colleges or state higher education agencies; 3. College Credential Attainment: Student credential attainment data were provided by the study colleges or state higher education agencies; 4. National Student Clearinghouse: Student enrollment and credential attainment data were provided by the National Student Clearinghouse via their StudentTracker database. This includes enrollment and credential attainment data at colleges beyond the colleges where the study took place.

The RAF contains student-level data, including baseline demographics (e.g., gender, race/ethnicity), outcomes (e.g., enrollment, credits earned, credentials), an indicator of experimental group (e.g., program or control group), and study variables (e.g., a variable that allows users to link to the RCT-level database).

The Expanding Children's Early Learning (ExCEL) Quality Study: Improving Preschool and Early Care and Education (ECE) Instruction through Curricula, Coaching, and Training was funded by Arnold Ventures and conducted by MDRC and its subcontractors, MEF Associates and RTI International. The study consisted of two phases: ExCEL Quality (EQ; 2019-2020) and ExCEL Quality Continuation (EQC; 2020-2021). This collection contains analysis datasets with calculated measures at the child (DS2) and classroom (DS3) levels, a samples dataset for each phase (EQ = DS1, EQC = DS20), and raw data organized by study phase and data source.

ExCEL Quality

In the EQ study, the research team conducted an experimental study testing two interventions that consisted of curricular and professional development support and that targeted different dimensions of classroom quality, namely:

  • A whole-child intervention that targets structural and interactional aspects of classroom quality, using The Creative Curriculum for Preschool, 6th Edition
  • A domain-specific intervention with a specific scope and sequence that targets instructional aspects of classroom quality, using Connect4Learning, 1st Edition

ECE centers were selected across four U.S. localities in Head Start and community-based child care settings and were randomly assigned to one of three research conditions (Creative Curriculum, Connect4Learning, or preschool-as-usual). The project was originally designed to assess the impacts of each of the interventions on the content of instruction, teacher practices, classroom quality, and child outcomes, as well as to collect program implementation data. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic that began in March of the 2019-2020 school year, adjustments were made to the guiding questions and research aims, data sources, and analysis.

ExCEL Quality Continuation

The EQC Study was a non-experimental study, aiming to understand ECE teachers' and administrators' experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2021 school year). The sample was a subset of the centers that participated in EQ in the 2019-2020 school year (n=26), plus five newly recruited centers. EQC provided stress management workshops and curricular support (Creative Curriculum or Connect4Learning) to participating centers regardless of their original research condition in EQ.

Developing Knowledge About What Works to Make Schools Safe: Implementation and Evaluation of Tools for Life to Improve School Climate and Safety in Jackson Public School District, Mississippi, 2016-2018 (ICPSR 37600)

Tools for Life: Relationship-Building Solutions (TFL) is a program designed to improve school climate and safety through the proactive development of elementary and middle school students' interpersonal skills (relationship-building and communication) and intrapersonal skills (self-regulation and resiliency). In the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years, the Jackson (Mississippi) Public School District (JPSD) implemented TFL in grades 1 through 8. RAND researchers conducted a randomized controlled trial to determine whether TFL, integrated into existing school practices, positively affected school climate and safety in the district.

This project described the implementation of TFL in JPSD, calculated its costs, and evaluated the program's effectiveness. TFL was designed to improve whole-school change in relationships among staff and students, but the project researchers found that implementation of TFL in JPSD schools was generally shallow, and the program was rarely, if at all, implemented across a whole school as it was designed. TFL had little impact: After one year of implementation, there were no practically or statistically significant differences between schools that implemented TFL and those that did not in measures of students' social and emotional, school climate, behavioral, or achievement outcomes. In addition to the uneven implementation of the program, methodological limitations of the study and contextual factors in JPSD may have contributed to these finding.

Evaluating the efficacy of a learning trajectory for early shape composition (ICPSR 168846)

Although basing instruction on learning trajectories (LTs) is often recommended, there is little direct evidence regarding the premise of a LT approach—that instruction should be presented (only) one LT level beyond a child’s present level. We evaluated this hypothesis in the domain of early shape composition. One group of preschoolers, who were at least two levels below the target instructional LT level, received instruction based on an empirically-validated LT. The counterfactual, skip-levels, group received an equal amount of instruction focused only on the target level. At posttest, children in the LT condition exhibited significantly greater learning than children in the skip-levels condition, mainly on near-transfer items; no child-level variables were significant moderators. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Gamification refers to the use of game mechanics in non-recreational environments, such as the school environment, in order to enhance motivation, concentration, effort, commitment and other positive values ​​common to all games. Gamification allows us to establish clear objectives that are presented to be overcome. It also offers constant feedback, shows the progression of students, recognizes their effort and it guides them over the course of the teaching and learning process. The aim is to measure the knowledge of future teachers about gamification as a didactic resource. The sample is composed of 164 students of the Degree in Primary Education in Galicia (Spain). The scale obtains a reliability of 0.94 α. The index of Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) provides a value of 0.932 and Bartlett's test of sphericity (c2 = 2739,793; gl = 351, p<.000), ensuring that the factor analysis is right, and the model achieves a good fit. The students of the Degree in Primary Education have not heard of the term gamification, but still consider feasible its implementation in the school environment. The students feel that they don’t know enough about this teaching resource, and they are afraid of not achieving the curricular objectives using it as they have no control over the content to be taught.

The goal of the Inference-Making and Reasoning in Biology (IMRB) measure was two-fold:

  1. To develop a measure that is reliable, valid, and fair across male/female, Under-Represented Minority (URM)/non-URM, and first-generation college/not first-generation students.
  2. To document that the measure can predict undergraduate introductory biology course grades

Two different 15-item, 1-hour forms were developed. Examinees (4-year college students planning to take or already taking introductory biology) do not need any specific preparation or knowledge before taking the assessment, as they are given all the information they need to reason with and are asked to draw valid conclusions with that information. These forms can be used in any order and may be administered by any research or course staff. They can be given on paper or on computer, to individuals or groups, once or twice per semester.

The National Study of Learning Mindsets (NSLM), also known as Students' Perspectives about the Transition to High School (PATHS), is a longitudinal research study and program evaluation administered by the University of Texas. The purpose of NSLM is to determine if introducing students to a positive growth mindset as they transition to high school will help improve students' academic success during high school and beyond. A growth mindset was defined as a belief amongst students that intelligence can grow and develop, learning is purposeful, hard work can lead to gained skills and accomplished goals, and that these beliefs can maintain motivation in the face of obstacles.

The sample consisted of more than 16,000 9th grade students across 74 high schools in 27 states. Number of courses taken, course level, and GPA before and after high school were measured within English, math, social studies, and science. Numerous demographic variables were collected for students, teachers, and schools. Student demographics included gender, race, and age. Teacher demographics consisted of race, teaching methods, and educational background. School characteristics such as location, course offerings, and students' average test scores were assessed.

This study investigates how youth from two cities in the US engage in critical data practices as they learn about and take action on COVID-19. Since March 2020, we have co-documented, with youth in the Midwest and the West Coast of the US, how people learn and make decisions in relation to COVID-19 in real time, and how this is shaped by justice-related concerns. Guided by theories of critical data literacies and data justice, a historicized and future-oriented participatory methodological approach is used to center the lived lives and communities of participants through dialogic interviews and experience sampling. Data were co-analyzed with participants using critical grounded theory. Findings illustrate how youth not only aimed to reveal the dynamic and human aspects of and relationships with data as they engage with/in the world as people who matter, but also offered alternative infrastructures for counter data production and aggregation towards justice in the here-and-now and possible futures. Implications for studies of learning with/through data practices in everyday life in relation to issues of justice are discussed.

Psychology is one of the most popular undergraduate majors in American universities, despite the fact that the discipline still has many unsettled questions regarding fundamental philosophical and methodological issues. These issues may be associated with a lack of clarity regarding an accurate conception of science and the nature of the relationship between psychology and science with respect to these controversies. Kuhn (1967) has suggested that scientific paradigms are transmitted in textbooks.

Millennium Cohort Study (ICPSR 36952)

Socio-emotional behaviours in early childhood, including self-regulation, emotional problems, and peer problems, have been shown to individually influence academic achievement in primary and secondary school. Environmental and demographic factors have also been shown to influence a child's academic development. The current study extends previous work to consider - concurrently, using structural equation modelling - a broader array of antecedents and measures of social-emotional development to understand their relative effects on academic outcomes. Parent-report data on a nationally representative sample of children (n = 17,035) at ages 3 and 5 years, and academic assessment at age 7, were drawn from the Millennium Cohort Study for longitudinal modelling. Results indicate the individual and collective contribution of socio-emotional, environmental, and demographic antecedents, expanding the current literature on predictors of child academic achievement in primary school. The results suggest that malleable factors in early childhood are important predictors of later academic success, and thus may be viable targets for intervention.

The ELMC Study collected data to describe the objectives, activities, approaches, strategies, and other aspects of the Early Learning Mentor Coach (ELMC) initiative from the perspectives of Head Start grantees, coaches, and staff. In October 2010, the funds to support the ELMC initiative were distributed to 130 Head Start grantees in 42 states and the District of Columbia for a seventeen month period. Grantees used the funds to hire coaches to provide on-the-job guidance, training, mentoring and technical assistance to Head Start staff. The grant recipients reflected the diversity of Head Start programs, including Migrant and Seasonal Head Start and American Indian and Alaskan Native Head Start grantees. Data was collected using a mixed-methods design (qualitative and quantitative) and the following data collection instruments: a grantee census survey; a coach census survey; coach telephone interviews; and staff telephone interviews with staff who received coaching. At this time, only the quantitative data are available via ICPSR.

The Head Start Miami-Dade County, 2014-2015 study seeks to validate a novel computerized measure of motivation orientation among 350 low-income preschoolers served by the Head Start program. To address the lack of developmentally appropriate and reliable measures of motivation orientation, a Computer Administered Battery of Observable Motivation (CABoOM) was developed. CABoOM consists of three tasks (sling shot, escape the grid, and memory matching) ranging in solvability and level of difficulty. The assessments were collected twice in the spring, once on the full sample and a second time within two weeks on a subset of the sample. Direct assessments of school readiness outcomes such as children's language and science abilities were collected, along with a teacher rating scale of approaches to learning in order to allow for the examination of gains across the year.

Head Start CARES Demonstration: National Evaluation of Three Approaches to Improving Preschoolers' Social and Emotional Competence, 2009-2015 (ICPSR 35510)

Low-income preschool children experience greater risks to their social and emotional development than their more affluent peers. These gaps are observed before children begin their formal schooling, and they remain or increase during the elementary school years. Since social and emotional risks may compromise children's future mental health and peer relationships, addressing them is important in its own right. In addition, social-emotional competence may aid learning: children who have difficulty regulating their emotions and behaviors have been found to receive less instruction, to be less engaged in and less positive about their role as learners, and to have fewer opportunities for learning from peers.

The Head Start CARES (Classroom-based Approaches and Resources for Emotion and Social skill promotion) demonstration tests three distinct approaches to enhancing children's social-emotional development on a large scale within the Head Start system - the largest federally funded early-childhood education program in the United States. Conceived and sponsored by the Office of Head Start and the Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation in the Administration for Children and Families within the United States Department of Health and Human Services, the Head Start CARES demonstration was conducted by MDRC, a nonprofit, nonpartisan education and social policy research organization, in collaboration with MEF Associates and several academic partners.

The three evidence-based social-emotional interventions selected for the Head Start CARES evaluation included: The Incredible Years Teacher Training Program (IY), Preschool PATHS (PATHS), and a one-year version of Tools of the Mind- Play (Tools). The interventions are referred to as "enhancements" because they enriched and complemented existing practices and curricula used in Head Start classrooms. These enhancements represent three "types" of social-emotional programming. That is, while all three were aimed at children's social-emotional development, they varied in their approach to changing this set of child outcomes by targeting somewhat different teacher practices, because they were built on differing theories about how social and emotional skills develop.

Baseline and Follow-up Class-level Impact Analysis Data Files

Data included in class-level data files were collected from external observers and teachers through two sources: Classroom Observations and Teacher Self-Surveys.

Classroom Observations were conducted by observers blind to treatment status who observed the classrooms participating in the study in four different sessions at Spring Baseline and Pre-K Follow-up. This source includes the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) scores and the Adapted Teaching Style Rating Scale (Adapted-TSRS) scores.

Teacher Self-Surveys were collected from lead teachers at Spring Baseline and Pre-K Follow-up. This data source includes information on classroom composition as well as teacher demographics, teaching experience, level of stress and depression, and professional relationship with peers and supervisors.

Child-level Impact Analysis Data File

Data included in this file were collected at Fall Baseline, Pre-K Follow-up and K Follow-up from teachers, children and their parents through three sources: Teacher Reports on Individual Children, Direct Child Assessments and Parent Surveys.

Teacher Reports on Individual Children (Teacher Reports) were collected at Fall Baseline, Pre-K Follow-up and K Follow-up. Lead teachers filled out surveys for each child separately, including questions about the child's social skills and behavior, the child's specific knowledge and skills, and the teacher's relationship with the child. Teacher reports were collected for both 4-year-olds and 3-year-olds at Fall Baseline and Pre-K Follow-up, but were not collected for 3-year-olds at K Follow-up. As a cover page to the Teacher Report, a shortened version of the Teacher Self-Survey was collected at K Follow-up and those data are included in this dataset.

Direct Child Assessments were conducted at Fall Baseline and Pre-K Follow-up. The dataset comprises data on a set of tasks measuring different skills for each child separately, including social and emotional skills, self-regulation skills and academic skills. Direct Child Assessments were collected for 4-year- olds only.

Parent Surveys were collected at Fall Baseline and K Follow-up. The survey was administered by phone and includes information on family demographics, parent-teacher involvement, parent's perception of school safety, child's social skills and behavior problems, parental level of stress and depression, and household composition and income. Parent Surveys were collected for 4-year-olds only.

Class-level Implementation Analysis Data File

This data file includes data collected from coaches, trainers and teachers on teacher training, classroom-based coaching, and classroom implementation. The data included in this dataset were collected through five separate instruments: (1) Teacher Training Attendance Forms, (2) Coach Weekly Logs, (3) Coach Monthly Fidelity Logs, (4) Trainer Fidelity Logs, and (5) Teacher's View of the Enhancement. Data collected from the first four data sources were collected multiple times during the implementation year while the fifth was collected once at the beginning of the implementation year. The child-level tracking data file includes parent-reported data collected in elementary school for children from the Head Start CARES sample. It includes information from parents about children's location and grade, social skills and problem behaviors at home, and receipt of special services.

The Taiwan Education Panel Survey (TEPS) is a national longitudinal project initiated by Academia Sinica and jointly funded by Ministry of Education, the National Science Council, and Academia Sinica. The objective of TEPS is to stimulate more basic research in the fields of education, sociology, economics, and psychology by employing large scale panel data on representative samples of students, and their parents, teachers, and school administrators. In a nutshell, TEPS has five distinguishing features: (1) Theory driven: The focus is on the skills, behavioral, values, and psychological consequences of schooling institutions and family environments of students. Factors that are found in the literature to affect students' learning outcomes are all included. Specifically speaking, an AOE model of learning outcomes, representing learning capabilities (Ability), learning opportunities (Opportunity), and the amount of effort made by the students (Effort), serves as a guiding framework for questionnaire development. Ability and effort are more on students themselves while opportunities covers family, teachers, and school environment, peers, and so forth.

(2) Student centered and multidimensional and multi-levels: Central to the project were questionnaire surveys of students. The data collection extends to cover the most influential actors in their learning environment: parents, teachers, and schools. It covered nested multiple levels of data - individual students, classes, and schools, etc.

(3) Panel surveys covering multiple programs and multiple cohorts: Students in junior high (G7 to G9), senior high (G10 to G12), vocational (G10 to G12), and junior college (G10 to G14) programs were administered for data collection. All students were followed at least twice. A portion of them were followed four times at G7, G9, G11, and G12. In light of the ongoing transformation of the Taiwanese educational system in 1990s, the project started with two cohorts of approximately 40,000 students, making it possible to employ a quasi-experimental design in future analysis.

(4) National representative samples of the students: Students under data collection were representative samples of the 1984/85 and 1988/89 birth cohorts. Weighting is provided according to the probabilistic sampling design.

(5) Public goods: Data are made available to the public as soon as the data collection and data cleaning is completed, thereby providing an important resource for both academic and policy research.

When Should Guidance Be Presented During Physics Instruction? (ICPSR 35626)

It is often recommended that providing students with explicit instruction by, for example, using a worked example to show them directly how to solve a problem may be more beneficial for transfer performance after learners attempt to solve the problem first on their own rather than presenting the worked example first. There is a concern, however, that the studies that have indicated a problem solving first advantage have often used mismatched manipulations between experimental groups such as adopting different learning materials between the groups in the learning phase. The current experiments compared example-problem and problem-example sequences in physics learning using strictly controlled conditions with examples and problems identical for both sequences and the order of activities as the only variable that was altered. The study also investigated the effect of presenting principle-based information as a form of instructional explanations to supplement worked examples or problems. The results supported the general conclusion that learning is facilitated by the early rather than later use of explicit guidance that prioritizes worked examples and by providing learners with other information that they may require to successfully solve transfer problems.

Multi-Trial Associative Recognition Memory Task with Metacognitive Judgments (ICPSR 34708)

These data are from an experiment studying the accuracy of metacognitive judgments (judgments of learning (JOLs), retrospective confidence judgments, estimated response times) in the context of an associative recognition task. The purpose of the study was to assess the influence of different cues on trial 2 JOLs, assessing the "memory for past test" heuristic. Individuals self-paced their study time for pairs of concrete nouns, and then received a yes/no associative recognition task, in which they were tested with intact pairs from study or rearranged pairs. The experimental program recorded responses and computed accuracy and latency. These data were analyzed and reported in a paper published in the Archives of Scientific Psychology, "Judgments of Learning are Influenced by Multiple Cues In Addition to Memory for Past Test Accuracy."

Phrasing Questions in Terms of Current (not future) Knowledge Increases Preferences for Cue-only Judgments of Learning (ICPSR 34645)

Judgments of learning (JOLs) predict later recall more accurately when they are made, after a delay, based on a cue alone as compared to a cue and target. The investigation focussed on whether people recognize the benefit of cue-only responses when making JOLs and whether their preferences depend on how JOL prompts are phrased. Forty participants studied glossaries and then made delayed cue-only and cue-target JOLs. In one condition, where the JOL prompts were phrased as predictions of future memory performance, only 15 percent of the participants preferred the cue-only strategy, replicating Jönsson and Kerimi (2011). In another condition, where JOLs were phrased as assessments of the current state of learning, 55 percent preferred the cue-only strategy. To conclude, students do not seem to recognize the value of cue-only JOLs, but they picked the superior JOL strategy more often when the JOL phrasing focused their attention on their knowledge state at the time of the JOL, rather than on a future state.

This round of Eurobarometer surveys diverged from the Standard Eurobarometer measures and queried respondents in the ten new European Union member countries on the following topics: (1) lifelong learning and (2) consumer rights. For the first major focus, the survey asked respondents to provide their opinions on lifelong learning including identifying life changes that have occurred in the last two years, the best opportunities in which to learn in a private or public setting, contexts in the past 12 months in which something was learned, and the most significant opportunity for learning in the last 5 years. Respondents were asked whether they studied or trained in the past 12 months, whether they were advised or required to do so, and the reasons why. In addition, they were queried about the three main benefits of the study or training they undertook in the past 12 months, the main reasons to complete study or training in the future, and their preferred method to improve or update professional skills. The survey also examined respondent opinion of obstacles that would affect and factors that would encourage participation in study or training, the most useful sources of information that would assist in improving study or career prospects, and situations that would influence them to pay for the cost of a course. Respondents also evaluated whether certain skills were useful, and if they had evidence of possessing these skills. For the second major focus, consumer rights, the survey only queried respondents in Poland. They were asked about their confidence in fair treatment during daily shopping -- while making major purchases -- and in purchasing a product in a shop, and whether they had problems when buying specific items from shops, sellers, or service providers, and the actions they took in response. Respondents were also asked about their knowledge of consumer rights and consumer rights groups, which people or organizations they would trust to provide correct advice and information about consumer rights, and whether they had asked Federacja Kosumentow, a consumer rights group, for information or advice. In addition, respondents evaluated the service they received from Federacja Kosumentow and whether they would refer others to this organization. They also identified whether they would monetarily support an independent consumer association, how frequently the media talked about consumer rights, and who in the media was the source of this information. Finally, respondents were asked whether they had heard a particular message and to define the meaning of that message, to evaluate Poland's consumer rights in comparison to those of other EU countries, and to assess the efficiency of the justice system in punishing people who cheat consumers. Demographic and other background information collected from all respondents includes age, gender, nationality, origin of birth (personal and parental), marital status, left-right political self-placement, occupation, age when stopped full-time education, household composition, availability of a fixed or mobile telephone in the household, type and size of locality, region of residence, and language of interview (select countries).

This round of Eurobarometer surveys queried respondents on standard Eurobarometer measures as well as lifelong learning, health, and partners and fertility. To start the interview, standard trend questions were asked regarding the euro and European Union (EU) policies. New questions were asked about EU expansion and priorities for local and national authorities. Next, questions were asked regarding lifelong learning situations within and outside of one's private life. Respondents were queried about places where learning occurred (e.g., school, work, social situations, and home), whether the study/training was for work or personal reasons, whether it was mandatory, what the benefits were, reasons for future study/training, best ways to improve job skills, obstacles to study/training, most useful information sources for study/training, and how much respondents would be willing to pay toward study/training. Respondents were also asked whether they possessed certain skills and could prove it, whether these skills were important within and outside of their private lives, and which study/training opportunities in the past five years they considered most important. The third portion of the interview collected information on respondent health problems and health-related issues. Questions were asked pertaining to current illnesses, visits to various medical professionals, long-term treatment of a variety of conditions (e.g., diabetes, cancer, and AIDS/HIV), dental issues, health tests, and check-ups (e.g., X-rays, blood pressure, and hearing), diet, alcohol consumption, and opinions of and things done to ensure child safety. Women in the study were asked about their knowledge and use of hormone replacement therapy, gynecological and other female-specific types of exams, and breastfeeding of children. The fourth portion of the survey dealt with issues of family and partners. Respondents were asked about the importance of having a spouse/partner and children, whether the father or mother should carry out certain childcare and household tasks, whether they had children and if so who was responsible for various household and childcare tasks, and with which of these task divisions they were most dissatisfied. They were also queried on plans for more children and desire for and timing of the births of current children. Background variables include age, gender, nationality, marital status, left-right political self-placement, occupation, age at completion of education, type and size of locality, and household income.

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is a federally-funded, ongoing, periodic assessment of educational achievement in the various subject areas and disciplines taught in the nation's schools. Since 1969, NAEP has gathered information about levels of educational achievement of 9-, 13-, and 17-year-olds across the country. In the fall of 1987, high school transcripts were collected from 34,140 students attending 433 schools that had previously been sampled for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in 1986. The sample of students for the transcript study included both handicapped and nonhandicapped students who in 1985-1986 were enrolled in the 11th grade and/or were 17 years old. Approximately half of the sampled students had participated in NAEP assessments in 1986. The 1987 High School Transcript Study also collected school-level information such as course lists, graduation requirements, and the definition of units of credit and grades. Student information included sex, grade level, age, graduation status, and race/ethnicity. The following additional information was gathered for handicapped students: handicapping condition, severity of cognitive, psychosocial, and physical limitation, reading and mathematics grade level (teacher estimate), placement in mainstream, resource, and self-contained classes, and receipt of selected services.

Comparison of Methods for Learning Choropleth Maps [1988-1990: United States] (ICPSR 9759)

The purpose of this study was to gather information on how people learn choropleth maps and to determine which of various computer display methods is most appropriate for learning this type of map. Software was developed to enable users to explore data commonly portrayed as a choropleth map. The software was then tested in controlled experiments using undergraduates at the University of Kansas. The design for Experiments I and II, which explored reactions to the sequencing of parts of a map as compared to the more traditional method of displaying a map all at once, consisted of formal and informal portions. In the formal portion, the actual effectiveness of traditional and sequenced maps was examined. The speed and accuracy of information acquisition and retention (memory) of subjects was the focus of this phase. In the informal portion, subjects viewed several display methods and (1) picked their most and least preferred methods, (2) explained their preferences, and (3) suggested alternative display methods. Dataset 1 contains data collected in association with the publication listed below. Datasets 2 and 3 consist of data from Experiments I and II, respectively, while Dataset 4 is a text file containing the verbal protocols used for Experiment I.

The base year of the Education Longitudinal Study (ELS) of 2002 represents the first stage of a major longitudinal effort designed to provide trend data about critical transitions experienced by students as they proceed through high school and into postsecondary education or their careers. The 2002 sophomore cohort will be followed, initially at 2-year intervals, to collect policy-relevant data about educational processes and outcomes, especially as such data pertain to student learning, predictors of dropping out, and high school effects on students' access to, and success in, postsecondary education and the work force. Part 1, Student-Level Data, is comprised of data from assessments of students (achievement tests in mathematics and reading), surveys of students, surveys of parents, and surveys of teachers. The student assessments measured achievement in mathematics and reading, and they provided baseline scores that can serve as a covariate or control variable for later analyses. The student questionnaire gathered information about the student's background, school experiences and activities, plans and goals for the future, employment and out-of-school experiences, language background, and psychological orientation toward learning. One parent of each participating sophomore was asked to respond to a parent survey. The parent questionnaire was designed to gauge parental aspirations for the child, home background and the home education support system, the child's educational history prior to 10th grade, and parental interactions with and opinions about the student's school. For each student enrolled in English or mathematics, a teacher was also selected to participate in a teacher survey. The teacher questionnaire collected the teacher's evaluations of the student and provided information about the teacher's background and activities. Part 2, School-Level Data, is comprised of data from surveys of school administrators, surveys of librarians, and a facilities checklist (completed by survey administrators, based on their observations at the school). The school administrator questionnaire collected information on the school in six areas: school characteristics, student characteristics, teaching staff characteristics, school policies and programs, technology, and school governance and climate. The head librarian or media center director at each school was asked to complete a library media center questionnaire that inquired into the school's library media center facility, its staffing, its technological resources, collection and expenditures, and scheduling and transactions. The facilities checklist was a brief observational form completed for each school. It collected information about the condition of school buildings and facilities.

This data collection presents follow-up data for the NATIONAL EDUCATION LONGITUDINAL STUDY, 1988 (ICPSR 9389). The base-year study collected information from student surveys and tests and from surveys of parents, school administrators, and teachers. It was designed to provide trend data about critical transitions experienced by students as they leave elementary school and progress through high school and postsecondary institutions or the work force. This collection provides the first opportunity for longitudinal measurement of the 1988 baseline samples. It also provides a point of comparison with high school sophomores from ten years before, as studied in HIGH SCHOOL AND BEYOND, 1980: A LONGITUDINAL SURVEY OF STUDENTS IN THE UNITED STATES (ICPSR 7896). Further, the study captures the population of early dropouts (those who leave school prior to the end of the tenth grade), while monitoring the transition of the student population into secondary schooling. The student component (Part 1) collected basic background information about students' school and home environments, participation in classes and extracurricular activities, current jobs, and students' goals, aspirations, and opinions about themselves. The student component also measured tenth-grade achievement and cognitive growth between 1988 and 1990 in the subject areas of mathematics, science, reading, and social studies. The school component (Part 3) supplies general descriptive information about the educational setting and environment in which surveyed students were enrolled. These data were collected from the chief administrator of each base-year school and cover school characteristics, grading and testing structure, school culture and academic climate, program and facilities information, parental interactions and involvement, and teaching staff characteristics. The dropout component (Part 5) provides data on the process of dropping out of school as it occurs from eighth grade on. Variables include school attendance, determinants of leaving school, self-perceptions and attitudes, work history, and relationships with school personnel, peers, and family. The teacher component (Part 7) was administered to teachers of follow-up students in four basic subject areas: mathematics, science, English, and history. The questionnaire elicited teacher evaluations of student characteristics and performance in the classroom, curriculum information about the classes taught, teacher demographic and professional characteristics, information about parent-teacher interactions, time spent on various tasks, and perceptions of school climate and culture.

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is a continuing survey of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of young Americans. Each year during the period 1970-1980, 75,000 to 100,000 persons were assessed in the following learning areas: reading, reading/literature, mathematics, science, and citizenship/social studies. Data are presented for 9-year-olds, 13-year-olds, and 17-year-olds for the academic years 1970-1971, 1972-1973 to 1977-1978, and 1979-1980, in the form of "Booklet" files. At the school level, background variables include the region, census division, type and size of community, occupation mix of attendance area, grade range, racial composition, total enrollment, and Title I eligibility. At the respondent level, items cover age, sex, race, parents' education, and reading materials in the home. From the school year 1972-1973 on, regional migration variables are included for the older age groups. From 1975-1976 on, 17-year-olds were asked a number of additional background questions, including their homework and TV viewing habits, languages spoken in the home, racial/ethnic heritage, and household possessions.
