This replication package accompanies "Raising Grievances to the State: The Political Economic Effects of Anti-Corruption Crackdowns on Labor Activism in China" (Journal of Development Economics, Vol. 181, April 2026). The paper studies how government actions shape workers' expected returns to striking by exploiting China's 2012 anti-corruption campaign as a natural experiment. Using a city-level dataset linking Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) corruption inspections to labor strikes from 2011 to 2020, the analysis shows that strike incidents rise sharply after a city's first high-profile inspection, driven largely by wage-arrears disputes at private firms and concentrated in the construction and manufacturing sectors. Strikes also spread through network channels, with later-treated and neighboring cities responding to inspections elsewhere. The evidence indicates that inspections weakened firm-government ties and shifted government attention, raising workers' expected returns to striking and revealing pre-existing grievances.
The package contains the Stata (.do) and R (.R) scripts, cleaned prefecture-city-month and prefecture-city-quarter panel datasets, and documentation needed to reproduce every table and figure in the paper and its appendix, along with a README describing the data-cleaning sequence, computational requirements, and dataset provenance. Several restricted-access source files (a corruption-investigation microdataset, a national tax survey extract, and a prefecture panel from a related study) are not redistributed per their original data-use agreements; the README documents how to obtain them and which results depend on them.

This was the second in a series of studies conducted by the Social Research Institute of Tokyo on the political attitudes of the voting population in metropolitan Tokyo (see also ICPSR 7068 and 7070). The study first examined the respondents' interest in politics, political party preference, degree of party support, and voting patterns. Respondents were then asked to rate the three political parties on several issues. Respondents' identification with the political ideologies of the capitalist, socialist, and communist systems were also explored, as were views on strikes, government suppression of debates and speeches, violence as a means of political persuasion, and the necessity of compromise and patience within the political sphere. The importance of preserving Japanese customs and traditions of the past was assessed, as well as the respondents' opinions of the authority of the Emperor. Demographic variables cover age, sex, education, occupation, standard of living, and labor union membership.

This study contains two data files providing measures of protest violence and economic indicators for Argentina in the period 1955-1972. Part 1, Monthly Protest Data, contains variables on the number of strikes in different parts of Argentina and in the country as a whole, type of strike, strike participants such as unions, workers' organizations, the middle class, and national union organizations, demonstrations by students, Peronists, the Radical party, leftists, centrists, rightists, blue and white collar workers, and other actors, guerilla actions by the People's Revolutionary Army, the Peronista organizations, and other organizations, and the duration, nature of violence, and total dead or seriously wounded in the protest events. This study includes three separate surveys that focused on the 1972 national election in Canada. Two surveys were conducted prior to the October 31 election date, and the third immediately following the election. The first questionnaire (Part 1), administered in June-July 1972, elicited respondents' opinions on parties and personalities in federal politics and on issues such as inflation, constitutional reform, campaign spending, marijuana legislation, and the right of federal employees to strike. Respondents were also asked to assess the performance of the Prime Minister and the qualifications of the main opposition candidates. Finally, respondents were questioned about their partisan affiliation and their voting behavior over the past few elections. Respondents' sex was the only demographic information collected in this survey. The second survey (Part 2), conducted in September 1972, assessed respondents' opinions on political issues such as unemployment, Canadian/United States relations, environment, taxes, price controls, and certain federal programs. In addition, respondents were questioned about their candidate preference, partisan identification, and party preference for the upcoming election. Basic demographic data such as age group, level of education, occupation, religious preference, union membership, national origin, and family income were also included. The third survey (Part 3) was administered in early November to a sample that included both first-time respondents and a panel that had also been interviewed in September. Respondents were asked to evaluate the federal election campaign, the candidates, parties, and political issues. Voting behavior in both the federal and local elections was also assessed. Filter variables are provided in Parts 1 and 3 to identify questions present on different survey forms, and in Part 3 filter variables distinguish between respondents who voted, or did not vote in the 1972 election. Demographic information included age group, level of education, occupation, religious preference, union membership, national origin, and family income.

This survey is part of a continuing series designed to monitor trends in a wide range of social attitudes in Great Britain. The British Social Attitudes Survey (BSA) is similar in purpose to the General Social Survey carried out by the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) in the United States. The BSA questionnaire has two parts, one administered by an interviewer and the other completed by the respondent. As in the past, the 1990 interview questionnaire contained a number of "core" questions covering the major topic areas of defense, the economy, labor market participation, and the welfare state. The 1990 self-enumerated questionnaire was devoted to a series of questions on a range of social, economic, political, and moral issues. Topics covered (by section) are: (1) Britain's relations with other countries, (2) the role of government and civil liberties, (3) crime, (4) the countryside, (5) divorce, (6) education, (7) the environment, (8) housing, (9) the child care system, (10) health care, (11) economic issues and policies, (12) government spending, (13) taxation, (14) economic activity, (15) new technology, (16) racial discrimination, (17) sexual behavior, (18) the death penalty, (19) strikes, (20) newspaper readership, (21) smoking, and (22) leisure activities. Beginning in 1985, an international initiative funded by the Nuffield Foundation, the International Social Survey Program (ISSP), also contributed a module to the BSA. This study examined the French electorate's reaction to the political climate of France in 1968. The interviews were obtained by Institut Francais d'Opinion Publique during the week following the second round of voting in the 1968 election. The questionnaire dealt extensively with the worker strikes and student rebellions of May and June 1968. The study also investigated the respondent's satisfaction with French President Charles de Gaulle's policies as well as opinions concerning the value of the Common Market and the establishment of a united Europe and a European army. Questions about political party preference and the respondent's vote in 1967 and in 1968 were also asked. There were 80,000 governmental units represented in the 1977 Census of Governments. Work stoppages occurring between October 1976 and October 1977 are covered by these data. Information for each strike is provided for the following employment functions: education teachers, education other, highway, public welfare, hospitals, police protection, fire protection, sanitation other than sewage, and other. The following data are provided for each function: number of employees involved, work days idle (duration), person days idle, major issue, contract status, and final method of resolution.
