These time series data supply detailed information on imports and exports for various countries and geographical areas of the world. Countries are grouped into three main categories: (1) Industrial Countries, (2) Developing Countries, and (3) USSR, Eastern Europe, etc. Along with data from reporting countries, estimates are provided by partner countries for nonreporting countries or for those that are slow to report. A subset of these data (Part 4), containing annual data from 1948 to 1978, is available as well.

Data and calculations for the book "The Land of Too Much" Monica Prasad, Harvard University Press 2012 (ICPSR 34298)
Released/updated on: 2012-07-05
Geographic coverage: United States, Global
This data collection was used in the preparation of the book "The Land of Too Much" by author and Principle Investigator Monica Prasad. The data collection includes historical figures on the political economy for the Unites States and other advanced industrial countries. The book addresses why the United States has more poverty than every other developed country, why it experienced an attack on state intervention starting in the 1980s (known today as the neoliberal revolution), and why it recently suffered the greatest economic meltdown in seventy-five years.

Time period: 1959-01-01--1965-12-31
This data collection contains information about selected interactions between major powers, such as the United States, the former Soviet Union, the People's Republic of China, and Eastern European countries, and less developed countries for the years 1959, 1961, 1963, and 1965. The variables measuring the interactions include indicators of economic, political, and educational influence of the major powers on the less developed countries, such as the proportions of exports to and imports from the major powers, economic aid received from the major powers, the number of students from the less developed countries enrolled in educational institutions of the more developed countries, diplomatic recognition extended to the major powers by the less developed countries, news services of the major powers in the less developed countries, and the relative geographic distance between each of the less developed countries and the more developed countries. Also included are variables describing characteristics of the less developed countries, such as population and description of the Communist Party in each country. Additional variables provide information on the date of admission of each country to the United Nations, the degree of freedom of the press, and Communist Party membership.

The Analysis of Budget Consolidations: Concepts, Research Designs and Measurement (ICPSR 22780)
Released/updated on: 2008-06-25
Geographic coverage: United States, Japan, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Portugal, Iceland, Global, Spain, New Zealand, Greece, Canada, Netherlands, Sweden, Austria, Belgium, Norway, Luxembourg, Ireland, Finland, Denmark, Italy, Australia, France, Germany
Fiscal adjustments have been examined from different perspectives in the literature. However, the conceptual approaches to the analysis of budget consolidations vary substantially. Therefore different approaches to the analysis of fiscal adjustments are discussed in a first step. It is shown that the choices regarding the underlying concepts lead to specific research designs and influence the appropriate empirical method. In a second step, the determinants of budget consolidations are examined empirically in four different research designs for 23 industrialized countries in the 1990s. The analysis shows that the results vary depending on the method applied. However, economic variables seem to play the most important role in explaining the consolidation performance.

International Victimization Survey, 1988 and 1992 (ICPSR 9421)
Released/updated on: 2005-11-04
Geographic coverage: United States, Japan, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Switzerland, Global, Spain, New Zealand, Canada, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Belgium, Norway, Finland, Poland, Italy, Slovakia, Australia, France, Germany
This survey was undertaken in 1988 and 1992 to compare crime rates
for industrialized countries and to assess national crime problems by
providing a crime index independent of police statistics.
Fifteen countries participated in the 1988 survey, and 13 countries were
included in 1992. A standardized
survey instrument was employed, with Japan, Czechoslovakia, and Poland
using questionnaires and sampling methods that varied slightly from the
rest. The data include
variables such as number of people in the household, sex of the
respondent, and number of respondents in the household 16 years of age
and older as well as under 16. Additional household demographic
variables include employment, education, income, insurance, and city
size. Crimes covered include motor vehicle
theft and damage, motor bicycle theft and damage, bicycle theft and
damage, housebreaking, violence, robberies, assaults, and
attempts. Victim-offender relationships, crime prevention techniques,
and police contact variables are also provided.

Inflation-Target Design: Changing Inflation Performance and Persistence in Industrial Countries (ICPSR 1204)
Released/updated on: 1999-08-18
This research explores the behavior of inflation in countries that formally target inflation relative to countries with historically good inflation records but which do not target the rate of change in the consumer price index (CPI). The author examines the design of inflation targets and the circumstances under which they were introduced. The author also asks, via some simple econometric tests, whether the introduction of targets had any statistically discernible impact on inflation persistence, and additionally, whether inflation persistence changed in the select countries that have no formal inflation targets. Finally, the author assesses, via a discussion of the behavior of private sector inflation forecasts, the credibility of inflation targets. Descriptive and econometric evidence suggest that the mere adoption of an inflation target is insufficient in delivering a consistently better inflation performance, nor does it significantly affect inflationary expectations. It remains to be seen whether inflation targeting can withstand pressures stemming from sustained breaches of targets, should inflation policies in the major industrialized countries begin to diverge. After all, the current disinflation, as this study has shown, is an international phenomenon.
