Project Migrante: Health Status and Access to Health Care Among Migrants on Mexico's Northern Border, 2020-2021 (ICPSR 38601)

Released/updated on: 2023-06-07
Geographic coverage: Tijuana, Matamoros, Mexico, Ciudad Juárez
Time period: 2020-01-01--2021-12-31

The Migrante Project is a binational study that examines health status and access to health care among Mexican migrants. Since 2007, Migrante investigators have implemented a series of cross-sectional probability-based surveys on Mexico's northern border. The current phase of Migrante includes three survey waves (N=1,200 each), each focused on a specific topic area. Data for the Wave I survey focused on HIV and sexual/reproductive health. Wave II is focused on non-communicable disease. Data collection for this wave is ongoing. Wave III (data to be collected in 2023) will focus on mental health and substance use. All surveys contain additional questions on socio-demographics, health status, health care access, migration history, and contextual factors related to migration stage. All waves also include biometric testing (for example, rapid HIV testing). Participants are sampled from four different migrant flows:

  • Northbound flow: Migrants traveling north and arriving at the border from other regions in Mexico
  • Southbound flow - Border: Migrants traveling from the Mexico side of the Mexico-US border to points farther south
  • Southbound flow - U.S.: Migrants returning to Mexico from the U.S. voluntarily
  • Deported flow: Migrants returning to Mexico from the U.S via deportation

The data herein come from the Wave I survey and were collected in Tijuana, Matamoros, and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico between August 2020 and September 2021. The study employed a multistage sampling design, with a combination of geographic and temporal sampling units, modeled after the Encuesta sobre Migración en la Frontera Norte de México (EMIF Norte). Migrante sampling sites for Wave I included bus stations, airports, and deportation stations in each of the three cities.

Eligible individuals were at least 18 years old, born in Mexico or other Latin American countries, fluent in Spanish, not residents of the city where the survey is being conducted (except for deported migrants), and traveling for labor reasons or change of residence. In total, there were 1,398 observations (northbound flow N=347, southbound flow N=703, and deported flow N=348) in Wave I, with 1,257 individuals completing the Wave I survey. Three hundred and six of these individuals belonged to the deported flow, 306 to the northbound flow, 336 to the southbound border flow, and 309 to the southbound U.S. flow. Consent rates ranged from 13% to 98% depending on the flow and survey city. Migrante surveys can be used to produce population-level estimates of health outcomes and health care access, investigate variations across migration phases, and explore the impact of health care and immigration policies on migrants' health outcomes, healthcare access, and individual and environmental health determinants.

Understanding and Measuring Bias Victimization Against Latinos, San Diego, CA, Galveston, TX, Houston, TX, Boston, MA, 2018-2019 (ICPSR 37598)

Released/updated on: 2022-04-28
Geographic coverage: San Diego, United States, Texas, Massachusetts, California, Boston, Houston, Galveston
Time period: 2018-01-01--2019-12-31

This study surveyed immigrant and non-immigrant populations residing in high Latino population communities in order to:

  • Assess the nature and pattern of bias motivated victimization.
  • Explore the co-occurrence of bias motivated victimization with other forms of victimization.
  • Measure reporting and help-seeking behaviors of individuals who experience bias motivated victimization.
  • Identify cultural factors which may contribute to the risk of bias victimization.
  • Evaluate the effect of bias victimization on negative psychosocial outcomes relative to other forms of victimization.
  • The study's sample was a community sample of 910 respondents which included male and female Latino adults across three metropolitan areas within the conterminous United States. These respondents completed the survey in one of two ways. One set of respondents completed the survey on a tablet with the help of the research team, while the other group self-administered the survey on their own mobile device. The method used to complete the survey was randomly selected. A third option (paper and pencil with an administrator) was initially included but was removed early in the survey's deployment. The survey was administered from May 2018 to March 2019 in the respondent's preferred language (English or Spanish).

This collection contains 1,620 variables, and includes derived variables for several scales used in the questionnaire. Bias victimization measures considered both hate crimes (e.g. physical assault) and non-criminal bias events (e.g. racial slurs) and allowed the respondent to report multiple incidents, perpetrators, and types of bias victimization. The respondents were asked about their help-seeking and reporting behaviors for the experience of bias victimization they considered to be the most severe and the measures considered both formal (e.g. contacting the police) and informal (e.g. communicating with family) help-seeking behaviors. The victimization scale measured exposure to traumatic events (e.g. witnessing a murder) as well as experiences of victimization (e.g. physical assault). Acculturation and enculturation scales measured topics such as the respondent's use of Spanish and English and their consumption of media in both languages. The variables pertaining to acculturative stress considered factors such as feelings of social isolation, experiences of racism, and conflict with family members. The variables for mental health outcomes measured symptoms of anger, anxiety, depression, and disassociation.

This is a collection of data from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), primarily about apprehensions of illegal immigrants. All the data here was originally scraped from the PDFs available from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Stats and Summaries page on their website (https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/media-resources/stats). I am in no way affiliated with CBP. What I did was take their public files and scrape the tables in the PDFs to make them more accessible. I then combined some tables together and reshaped the data to make it easier to use for analysis. The data is now available in R, Stata, and Excel (.csv) formats.
Please note that all the data is in fiscal years (October-September), not in calendar years.
There are 8 files and they all contains different information and some contains different number of years. Below is the file name, a brief description, the years of data available, and which variables it has, for each file.

Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study (CILS), San Diego, California, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami, Florida, 1991-2006 (ICPSR 20520)

    Released/updated on: 2018-12-12
Geographic coverage: San Diego, United States, California, Florida, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami
    Time period: 1991-01-01--2006-12-31
Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study (CILS) was designed to study the adaptation process of the immigrant second generation which is defined broadly as United States-born children with at least one foreign-born parent or children born abroad but brought at an early age to the United States. The original survey was conducted with large samples of second-generation immigrant children attending the 8th and 9th grades in public and private schools in the metropolitan areas of Miami/Ft. Lauderdale in Florida and San Diego, California. Conducted in 1992, the first survey had the purpose of ascertaining baseline information on immigrant families, children's demographic characteristics, language use, self-identities, and academic attainment. The total sample size was 5,262. Respondents came from 77 different nationalities, although the sample reflects the most sizable immigrant nationalities in each area. Three years later, corresponding to the time in which respondents were about to graduate from high school, the first follow-up survey was conducted. Its purpose was to examine the evolution of key adaptation outcomes including language knowledge and preference, ethnic identity, self-esteem, and academic attainment over the adolescent years. The survey also sought to establish the proportion of second-generation youths who dropped out of school before graduation. This follow-up survey retrieved 4,288 respondents or 81.5 percent of the original sample. Together with this follow-up survey, a parental survey was conducted. The purpose of this interview was to establish directly characteristics of immigrant parents and families and their outlooks for the future including aspirations and plans for the children. Since many immigrant parents did not understand English, this questionnaire was translated and administered in six different foreign languages. In total, 2,442 parents or 46 percent of the original student sample were interviewed. During 2001-2003, or a decade after the original survey, a final follow-up was conducted. The sample now averaged 24 years of age and, hence, patterns of adaptation in early adulthood could be readily assessed. The original and follow-up surveys were conducted mostly in schools attended by respondents, greatly facilitating access to them. Most respondents had already left school by the time of the second follow-up so they had to be contacted individually in their place of work or residence. Respondents were located not only in the San Diego and Miami areas, but also in more than 30 different states, with some surveys returned from military bases overseas. Mailed questionnaires were the principal source of completed data in this third survey. In total, CILS-III retrieved complete or partial information on 3,613 respondents representing 68.9 percent of the original sample and 84.3 percent of the first follow-up.Relevant adaptation outcomes measured in this survey include educational attainment, employment and occupational status, income, civil status and ethnicity of spouses/partners, political attitudes and participation, ethnic and racial identities, delinquency and incarceration, attitudes and levels of identification with American society, and plans for the future.

Immigration and Intergenerational Mobility in Metropolitan Los Angeles (IIMMLA), 2004 (ICPSR 22627)

    Released/updated on: 2008-07-01
Geographic coverage: United States, Los Angeles, California
    Time period: 2002-01-01--2008-12-31
IIMMLA was supported by the Russell Sage Foundation. Since 1991, the Russell Sage Foundation has funded a program of research aimed at assessing how well the young adult offspring of recent immigrants are faring as they move through American schools and into the labor market. Two previous major studies have begun to tell us about the paths to incorporation of the children of contemporary immigrants: The Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study (CILS), and the Immigrant Second Generation in New York study. The Immigration and Intergenerational Mobility in Metropolitan Los Angeles study is the third major initiative analyzing the progress of the new second generation in the United States. The Immigration and Intergenerational Mobility in Metropolitan Los Angeles (IIMMLA) study focused on young adult children of immigrants (1.5- and second-generation) in greater Los Angeles. IIMMLA investigated mobility among young adult (ages 20-39) children of immigrants in metropolitan Los Angeles and, in the case of the Mexican-origin population there, among young adult members of the third- or later generations. The five-county Los Angeles metropolitan area (Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Riverside and San Bernardino counties) contains the largest concentrations of Mexicans, Salvadorans, Guatemalans, Filipinos, Chinese, Vietnamese, Koreans, and other nationalities in the United States. The diverse migration histories and modes of incorporation of these groups made the Los Angeles metropolitan area a strategic choice for a comparison study of the pathways of immigrant incorporation and mobility from one generation to the next. The IIMMLA study compared six foreign-born (1.5-generation) and foreign-parentage (second-generation) groups (Mexicans, Vietnamese, Filipinos, Koreans, Chinese, and Central Americans from Guatemala and El Salvador) with three native-born and native-parentage comparison groups (third- or later-generation Mexican Americans, and non-Hispanic Whites and Blacks). The targeted groups represent both the diversity of modes of incorporation in the United States and the range of occupational backgrounds and immigration status among contemporary immigrants (from professionals and entrepreneurs to laborers, refugees, and unauthorized migrants). The surveys provide basic demographic information as well as extensive data about socio-cultural orientation and mobility (e.g., language use, ethnic identity, religion, remittances, intermarriage, experiences of discrimination), economic mobility (e.g., parents' background, respondents' education, first and current job, wealth and income, encounters with the law), geographic mobility (childhood and present neighborhood of residence), and civic engagement and politics (political attitudes, voting behavior, as well as naturalization and transnational ties).
