Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP), 2022 [United States] (ICPSR 39320)

Released/updated on: 2025-05-07
Geographic coverage: United States
Time period: 2022-01-01--2022-12-31

The Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP) survey collects data on the perspectives and experiences of alumni from arts, design, and adjacent fields. The 2022 SNAAP survey data offer evidence-based insights to help inform the important work being undertaken by postsecondary institutions offering studies and training in arts and design amid shifts and changes affecting higher education.

SNAAP's national, online survey was launched in 2008 to meet the growing need for reliable alumni outcomes data, as articulated by arts training institutions across the country. The survey draws generalizable insights about "artists" with postsecondary degrees (as defined by Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) codes) in arts, design, and media fields. Alumni of independent arts and design colleges, conservatories, and arts schools and departments within comprehensive colleges and universities are surveyed.

SNAAP's survey was successfully relaunched in 2022 with numerous changes to its design, methodology, and administration. This included a probabilistic sampling frame to ensure a more representative sample; a more inclusive recruitment process to secure a more diverse group of institutions' participation in SNAAP; and a revised survey questionnaire to expand on important substantive areas and improve the respondent's experience completing the questionnaire. The revised questionnaire gave new attention to alumni's "sense of belonging" at their educational institution; the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their lives and careers; and paying for postsecondary arts education.

Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study (ICPSR 39134)

Released/updated on: 2024-05-29

The Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study captures information on the transition of bachelor's degree recipients into the labor force, with a focus on recent graduates, particularly young adults under age 25 and those aged 25-29. The study provides insights into various aspects of graduates' experiences, including their employment, education, and certification status. While the sample size for arts graduates is relatively small, the study offers valuable data for understanding educational and employment experiences, and career trajectories of individuals in arts-related fields.

Access to the available public-use data is provided through DataLab. Restricted-use data are also available under restricted-use license.

Key Variables Related to Arts Education and Employment:

  1. B1ARTRCNT: Indicates whether the respondent taught arts or music at the most recent teaching job held within 12 months after completing their bachelor's degree.

  2. B1CERTART: Indicates whether the respondent was certified to teach arts or music as of the Baccalaureate and Beyond interview.

  3. B1EPRMSBRCNT: Indicates the primary subject taught at the most recent teaching job held within 12 months after completing the bachelor's degree, with a value indicating arts or music.

  4. B1HIDGMAJ: Indicates the major or field of study within 12 months after completing the bachelor's degree, with specific categories related to arts, such as design and applied arts.

  5. B1OCC231ST: Indicates the respondent's occupation for the first job within 12 months after completing the bachelor's degree, with categories including arts, design, entertainment, sports, and media.

  6. B1OCC23RCNT: Indicates the respondent's occupation for the most recent job within 12 months after completing the bachelor's degree, with categories related to arts, design, entertainment, sports, and media occupations.

  7. B2ARTTCHCRT: Indicates whether the respondent was certified to teach arts or music and whether they taught arts or music at their most recent teaching job within 4 years after completing the bachelor's degree.

  8. B2HICMAJ: Indicates the major or field of study within 4 years after completing the bachelor's degree, with categories including visual and performing arts.

  9. B2OCC23RCNT: Indicates the respondent's occupation at their most recent employer within 4 years after completing the bachelor's degree, with categories related to arts, design, entertainment, sports, and media occupations.

Additionally, the study includes variables related to the Carnegie Classification of institutions attended by the graduates, as well as detailed information on their field of study or major, particularly in visual and performing arts.

NCAA Division I and II Graduation Success Rate and Academic Success Rate, 1995-2008 Cohorts [United States] (ICPSR 30022)

Released/updated on: 2015-11-05
Geographic coverage: United States
Time period: 1995-01-01--2008-12-31

This study includes the federal graduation rate for all NCAA member institutions who participated in Division I or Division II sports. It also describes the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for all Division I institutions and the Academic Success Rate (ASR) of all Division II institutions. The rates included in this study are based on championship sport student-athletes who first began their full-time postsecondary education in academic years 1995-96 through 2008-09.

Each cohort was tracked for 6 years for college completion. For example, the graduation status for the latest cohort (2008-09 cohort) was tracked through the spring of 2014. At their core, all three measures are based on a comparison of the number of students who entered a college or university in a given year and the number of those who graduated within six years of their initial enrollment, though each measure has a slightly different cohort definition. Federal graduation rates are based on the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System Graduation Rates (IPEDS-GRS) which is defined as a six-year proportion of those student-athletes who graduated versus those who entered an institution on institutional aid. Federal graduation rates are included for both an institution's student-athletes and its general student body.

In addition to the student-athlete data in the graduation-rates data, the Division I Graduation Success Rate (GSR) accounts for student-athletes who transfer into an institution while discounting student-athletes who separate from the institution and would have been academically eligible to compete had they returned. The definition of the Division II Academic Success Rate (ASR) cohort is identical to that of the GSR with the exception that it also includes freshmen who did not receive athletics aid, but did participate in athletics.

Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS): Consolidated Survey Form, 1990 (ICPSR 2213)

Released/updated on: 2004-07-01
Geographic coverage: United States
Time period: 1990-01-01--1990-12-31
The consolidated (CN) survey form was used for the first time in 1990-1991 to collect information from a subset of the 10,500 postsecondary institutions in the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) universe. IPEDS collects information on such topics as institutional characteristics, enrollments, completions, finance, staff, and libraries. All schools in the IPEDS universe were asked to complete an institutional characteristics form. Approximately 3,600 institutions of higher education (i.e., those that are accredited at the college level by an agency recognized by the Secretary, United States Department of Education) plus another 400 nonaccredited schools that grant a bachelor's, master's, doctoral, or first-professional degree were asked to complete the full complement of IPEDS surveys. Of the remaining 6,500 postsecondary schools who were eligible to receive the Consolidated (CN) survey form, 2,998 schools were sent the form, of which 2,472 responded. The following data were requested from institutions using the CN survey form: (1) fall enrollment for 1990, by racial/ethnic category and sex of student, (2) completions for the 1989-1990 academic year, by field of study and award level and by racial/ethnic category and sex of recipient, (3) financial statistics for fiscal year 1990, including revenue/tuition fees, expenditures/scholarship, and other expenditures, and (4) selected data on libraries on total FTE staff, operating expenses, and total circulation transactions. The single CN form was substituted for the four more detailed IPEDS surveys that were sent to the accredited/degree-granting institutions. Data for the CN respondent institutions appear on both the CN file and on the individual IPEDS adapt files for the fall enrollment, completions, finance, and libraries surveys.
