This study is a 40-year time series of social, economic, and political indicators at the national level for the United States in the period 1929-1968. The variables include data on expenditures from the federal budget by various departments, agencies, and commissions, the number of employees in the various United States departments, measures of the political characteristics of the United States Congress, such as the number of Repuplicans, Democrats, and "other" party members in the United States Senate and in the House of Representatives, business and consumer expenditures, and attributes of the population. Data are also provided on the number per 1,000 of immigrants to the United States, membership of all the religious bodies in the United States, labor union membership, total households in the United States, total civilian labor force, and the number of the unemployed. Demographic variables provide information on education, births, and death rates. The unit of analysis is the year. Variables 2-281 cover the period from 1929-1968 and Variables 282-408 cover only the period from 1947-1968.

These time series data provide information on the balance of payments among countries and geographical areas of the world. Detailed tabulations included in this collection describe (1) transactions in goods, services, and income between an economy and the rest of the world, (2) changes of ownership and other changes in that country's monetary gold, special drawing rights (SDRs), and claims and liabilities to the rest of the world, and (3) unrequited transfers and counterpart entries that are needed to balance, in the accounting sense, any entries for previous transactions and changes that are not mutually offsetting. Aggregated and detailed presentations show data for items such as investments, short- and long-term capital, reserves, and changes in reserves.

Census of Governments, 1977: Bargaining Units Summary Statistics (ICPSR 8179)

The Census of Governments is conducted at five-year intervals by the Census Bureau and covers the following major subject areas: governmental organization, taxable property values, government employment, and government finances. The statistics in this data collection were gathered from a subset of units analyzed in the 1977 Census of Governments. Contained in that subset were all state and local governments that had one or more collective bargaining units, and data are provided for each bargaining unit. Information is included on the type of employees represented, whether the unit represented supervisory personnel, and the number of employees represented. Up to l3 bargaining units may be contained in one record, and governmental units with more than 13 units will have more than one record. There are 36 state governments and 12,110 local governments with bargaining units represented in this data collection.

This data collection consists of three data files: a counties file, a cities file, and a places file. The Counties File (Part 1) provides data on area and population, households, vital statistics, health, Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, crimes, housing, journey to work, education, labor force, personal income, money income, government employment and finances, manufactures, wholesale and retail trade, service industries, banking, elections, and agriculture. It provides data for the nation as a whole, the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 3,137 counties or county equivalents. There are two physical records (segments) of 1,276 characters for each of the conceptual records in the counties file. Records are sequenced by FIPS state code and, within that, FIPS county code. The Cities File (Part 2) includes, in addition to most of the subjects in the counties file, data on workers in the family, climate, and residential electric bills. The cities file provides data for the 50 states and the District of Columbia and for 957 incorporated cities with 25,000 inhabitants or more in 1980. The sequence of records is FIPS state code and, within that, Census place code. Part 3, the Places File, provides data on land, population, money income, and households. It includes data for the 50 states, District of Columbia, 7,601 places with 2,500 inhabitants or more in 1980, and, for 11 states, 2,368 minor civil divisions (MCDs) with 2,500 inhabitants or more in 1980. Records are sequenced by FIPS state code and, within that, Census place code. For the 11 states for which MCDs are shown, the MCD records follow the place records, which are sorted alphabetically within the state.

Gambling in the United States, 1975 (ICPSR 7495)

This study contains interviews conducted with a national sample (Part 1) and a sample of Nevada residents (Part 2) on gambling activities and attitudes toward both legal and illegal gambling. The study attempted to determine the extent of gambling activities in the United States, examine the social consequences of changes in gambling laws, and estimate government revenues available from legal gambling. Questions were asked about leisure time activities, gambling patterns, amount of money bet, and types of gambling practiced by respondents. Specially designed questions on "off-track betting" were asked of residents of the greater New York City area -- the only area besides Nevada where this kind of gambling had been legalized. New Jersey residents were queried on another type of gambling, "Pickit", the only legal numbers game that existed in the United States at the time the study was conducted. Demographic data include age, sex, race, marital status, level of education, religious preference and church attendance, number of children, employment status, occupation, and income.

This data collection contains current population estimates and per capita money income for counties and minor civil divisions in each state. These estimates were developed to provide updates of the data elements in Federal Revenue Sharing allocations under the state and local Fiscal Assistance Act of 1972. Population estimates recorded in the dataset are for July 1, 1976, while per capita income estimates are for 1975. The units recorded in the data collection include counties, incorporated places, certain towns in New England, New York, and Wisconsin, and townships in other states. Certain Midwestern states may have active minor civil divisions in some counties, but not in others. In additional to these estimates, April 1, 1970, population and 1969 and 1975 per capita money income are included for each area. POPULATION AND INCOME ESTIMATES FOR THE UNITED STATES, 1969-1973 (ICPSR 0078) and POPULATION AND PER CAPITA INCOME ESTIMATES, 1969-1975 (ICPSR 7577) contain similar data for earlier years.

This data collection contains current population estimates and per capita money income for counties and minor civil divisions in each state. These estimates were developed to provide updates of the data elements in Federal Revenue Sharing allocations under the state and local Fiscal Assistance Act of 1972. Population estimates recorded in the dataset are for July 1, 1978, while per capita income estimates are for 1969 and 1977. The units recorded in the data collection include counties, incorporated places, certain towns in New England, New York, and Wisconsin, and townships in other states. Certain Midwestern states may have active minor civil divisions in some counties, but not in others. In addition to these estimates, April 1, 1970, population and 1969 and 1975 per capita money income are included for each area. POPULATION AND INCOME ESTIMATES FOR THE UNITED STATES, 1969-1973 (ICPSR 0078) and POPULATION AND PER CAPITA INCOME ESTIMATES, 1969-1975 (ICPSR 7577) contain similar data for earlier years.

This study includes data collected to investigate the dynamics of conflict and warfare and the role played by national growth and expansion in these processes. Annual aggregate data were compiled for the period 1870-1914 on Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, and Austria-Hungary in eight categories: national size, colonial size, economic and productivity profile, commercial activity, government budget, alliances, violence, and conflicts of interest. Data in the first six categories were gathered from yearbooks and other historical sources. One of the alliance measures, adversary relationship, is a dummy variable indicating if a state was aligned or not. Variables in the last two categories are derived by subjective scaling procedures. The data are structured around individual years as units of analysis.

For this study of political systems performance, time-series data were compiled for France, Sweden, and the United Kingdom on a quinquennial basis for the period 1850-1965. Information is provided for each country on population characteristics, such as the number of total population, the number of total population aged 0 to 4, 0 to 14, and 65 and older, births per 1,000 population, life expectancy, deaths per 1,000 population, infant deaths per 1,000 live births, the number of pupils enrolled in elementary and secondary schools, the number of students enrolled in colleges and universities, the number of teachers in secondary schools, and the number of civil servants, doctors, midwives, and hospital beds. Economic variables provide information on the Gross National Product (GNP), price index, number of patents issued, energy consumption, maximum income tax rate, government revenue from income tax, amount of public debt in millions, total public expenditures on defense, education, pension, welfare, health, veterans' benefits, and labor, labor union membership, the number of total work force employed in agriculture, the amount of agricultural production, the percentage of working-age population unemployed, the number of people on welfare, and the number of people receiving public pensions. Additional variables provide information on the voting population, the population voting for left-wing parties, population residing in cities over 20,000 in size, and population residing in the three largest cities. Three political indexes, the Cutright Index of Political Development, the Flanigan-Fogelman Index of Democratization, and an index indicating the ideology of the regime for each year, are also provided for the purpose of crossnational comparisons.
