Americans and the Arts [1973 - 1992] (ICPSR 35575)

The Americans and the Arts study is a series of studies measuring participation in and attitudes about the arts and arts in education. In 1973 care was taken to avoid any bias in the wording or emphasis of the questions so that respondents would not feel pressure to provide "right" answers. A total of 3,005 personal interviews averaging one hour and thirty four minutes in length were conducted in January 1973. The 1975 Americans and the Arts collected data from 1,555 respondents in interviews conducted in June 1975. The Americans and the Arts 1980 collected data from 1,501 respondents between July 17 to July 28, 1980. The 1984 Americans and the Arts was administered to 1,504 respondents from March 5 to March 25, 1984. In 1987, in order to determine which adult member of the household will be interviewed, the interviewer asked for one of the following household members, in order of priority: youngest adult male at home, next youngest adult male at home, youngest adult female at home, or next youngest adult female at home. This survey was administered to 1,501 respondents selected from March 13 to April 6, 1987. For the 1992 study, "Frankel-Goldstein grids" were attached to the backs of cards for interviewers to use to select an adult if there is more than one in the household. An M or F designation was put on the front of the cards at a 66/33 ratio to help the completed interviews fall out 48 percent male and 52 percent female. Interviewers used this designation to determine which respondent to select if there is an eligible respondent of each sex residing in the household. This survey was administered to 1,500 adults from February 6 to February 25, 1992. The 1973 and 1975 surveys look at topics including childhood arts exposure, current arts participation, leisure activities, and attitudes regarding arts and arts funding. The 1980, 1984, 1987, and 1992 Americans the Arts measured topics including attendance, participation, art, and education, funding, individual artists, TV and the arts, children and the arts, and support for the arts. Survey sampling differences preclude comparisons with measures of arts participation between the 1973 and 1975 Americans and the Arts studies which used face-to-face interviewing and the 1980, 1984, 1987, and 1992 studies which used computer-assisted telephone interviewing.

This data collection provides selected economic, social, demographic, and political information for 48 states of the United States during the 1950s and 1960s. Variables describe population characteristics, such as the number of adults aged 65 and over, the number of dentists and physicians, the number of patients in mental hospitals, the death rates of white and non-white infants under one year of age per 1,000 live births, respectively, the number of recipients of public assistance such as Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC), elementary and secondary school enrollment, enrollment in vocational programs, the total number of students in higher education, the number of those conferred with M.A. and Ph.D. degrees, and the number of workers in research experiment stations. Other variables provide economic information, such as personal income per capita, average monthly payment per recipient of some public assistance programs, average salary per month for full-time state and local employees, state and local government revenues and expenditures, and various intergovernmental revenues from the federal government for certain services. Additional variables record crime statistics, such as the number of robbery, burglary, larceny, auto theft, assault, rape, and murder offenses per 100,000 of the population. There are also variables that give information on each state's topography, such as the acreage of state parks, total farm acreage, municipal road mileage, and total unsurfaced road mileage.

This data collection contains annual figures on several macroeconomic and military indicators for 78 countries independent since 1948. For each year from 1948 through 1983 data were obtained for each country on these key characteristics: total exports, total imports, government revenues, government expenditures, capital formation, defense expenditures, gross national product, population, and total military personnel. These variables permit an analysis of the relations among European nations as well as relations between European nations and other nations of the world. The United States Consumer Price Index (in 1975 U.S. dollars) and the exchange rate (value of one U.S. dollar in the national currency at current prices) are supplied as well.

This study is a 40-year time series of social, economic, and political indicators at the national level for the United States in the period 1929-1968. The variables include data on expenditures from the federal budget by various departments, agencies, and commissions, the number of employees in the various United States departments, measures of the political characteristics of the United States Congress, such as the number of Repuplicans, Democrats, and "other" party members in the United States Senate and in the House of Representatives, business and consumer expenditures, and attributes of the population. Data are also provided on the number per 1,000 of immigrants to the United States, membership of all the religious bodies in the United States, labor union membership, total households in the United States, total civilian labor force, and the number of the unemployed. Demographic variables provide information on education, births, and death rates. The unit of analysis is the year. Variables 2-281 cover the period from 1929-1968 and Variables 282-408 cover only the period from 1947-1968.

This multipurpose survey measures a wide range of variables of interest in sociology, political science, and labor economics. It is similar to national social surveys conducted regularly in the United States, Britain, and West Germany, and much of the data are directly comparable. The questionnaire covers attitudes toward a broad range of topics, including government expenditures, taxation, inflation, crime, poverty, women and careers, migrants, political figures, and confidence in institutions such as banks and police. Economic variables provide information on government revenues, government expenditures, gross domestic capital formation, public investment as a percentage of the gross domestic product (GDP), gross national product (GNP), defense budgets, energy, investment, labor, number of wage earners as a percentage of active population, industrial production, electricity production, per capita energy consumption, educational expenditures, economic welfare, consumer price index, international economic aid, total international trade, imports and exports, agriculture, and membership in major African multilateral economic organizations. This poll, the first of two fielded December 2012, is part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that solicits public opinion on a range of political and social issues. Respondents were asked how well Barack Obama was handling the presidency on issues such as foreign policy, the economy, terrorism, taxes, and the budget deficit. Opinions were collected on the progress of the economy, the job market, the performance of Congress, feelings toward Washington, and whether the country was heading in the right direction. The respondents were also asked for their opinions of the Republican and Democratic parties, Barack Obama, John Boehner, Hillary Clinton, and the difficulty in reaching agreements and passing legislation in Congress. Data were collected on tax increases and spending cuts, expectations of the negotiations between the two parties, the preferred plan for reducing the budget deficit, and whether the respondents approved of Congress raising the federal debt ceiling. Respondents were also asked their views about illegal immigrants, ongoing violence in Syria, gun control laws, the recent shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School and safety of schools, holiday shopping, and New Year's Eve plans. Additional topics included the worst date movie, the least interesting movie, the most difficult job in Hollywood, expected changes to the Oscars broadcast, quintessential actor and actress, and preference of a great movie over a powerful documentary. Demographic information includes sex, age, race, marital status, education level, household income, religious preference, type of residential area (e.g., urban or rural), political party affiliation, political philosophy, voting behavior, whether respondents were registered to vote, and whether respondents thought of themselves as born-again Christians.

The substantive common denominator in the surveys is a continuing evaluation of the Reagan presidency. Each survey also contains questions of topical relevance or questions about broader social issues. Respondents were queried about their attitudes towards the arms race and "Star Wars", Ronald Reagan and his domestic and foreign policies, tax reform, the federal deficit, the Vietnam War, Reagan's visit to the military cemetery in Bitburg, Central America, trade policies, the United Nations, AIDS, the Soviet Union, and religion and the Catholic church. One survey contains questions concerning race relations and public figures in New York City. Only New York City residents were interviewed for this particular survey. All surveys contain demographic information on respondents.

As part of an ongoing data collection effort, a series of interviews was conducted throughout 1986 by CBS News and The New York Times. Although varying in subject matter, the surveys provide a continuing evaluation of the Reagan presidency. Part 1 contains questions on a variety of domestic and foreign policy issues including arms control, the deficit, and the homeless. Part 2 is concerned with the Challenger accident. Items include support for space programs and the effect the accident had on children. Part 3 focuses on the problems facing farmers. Part 4 is a survey of New York City residents about the state of their city government. Part 5 is primarily concerned with issues of ethics in business. Additional items include opinions on the bombing of Libya, nuclear power, and the accident at Chernobyl. Part 6 queries respondents about their opinions on the United States bombing of Libya. Part 7 concerns United States immigration policies and opinions of immigrants. Part 8 focuses on the problem of drugs. Respondents were asked about the extent of the drug problem in the United States and in a variety of settings (school and the workplace) and how the government should respond to the drug problem. Part 9 contains items concerning the 1984 and 1986 elections, the state of the United States economy, changes in tax laws and the Nicholas Daniloff affair. Part 10 surveys respondents about AIDS, their knowledge of AIDS, what they do to protect themselves, and opinions of what the governmental reponse should be to the AIDS problem. Part 11 centers on the l986 election. Respondents were asked about the likelihood of their voting, vote choices for a variety of offices, the impact of issues on their vote choice and past voting behavior. An additional series of items was asked about women in politics and trust in government. Part 12 contains questions concerning the Soviet summit in Iceland. Questions concern repondents' opinions on arms control issues and SDI or "Star Wars". Parts 13 and 14 focus on the Iran-Contra affair. These surveys include items concerning trust in government and evaluation of Reagan. Part 15 is the football survey containing items about favorite teams, officiating, and television coverage of the sport.

The Census of Governments is conducted at five-year intervals by the Census Bureau and covers the following major subject areas: governmental organization, taxable property values, government employment, and government finances. The statistics in this data collection were gathered from a subset of units analyzed in the 1977 Census of Governments. Contained in that subset were all state and local governments that had one or more collective bargaining units, and data are provided for each bargaining unit. Information is included on the type of employees represented, whether the unit represented supervisory personnel, and the number of employees represented. Up to l3 bargaining units may be contained in one record, and governmental units with more than 13 units will have more than one record. There are 36 state governments and 12,110 local governments with bargaining units represented in this data collection.

Parts 1-5 provide data for each individual state and local government. Part 6 includes data for county areas (local governmental units within each county). Part 7 contains a United States summary and state summaries for the following types of governments: state and local government total, state government, local government total, local governments in standard metropolitan statistical areas (SMSAs), counties, municipalities, townships, school districts, and special districts.

The Employment Summary Statistics dataset is part of the Census of Governments, a complete enumeration of United States governmental units undertaken every five years. This data collection contains the October, 1982 employment and payroll figures for the governments. Data for full- and part-time employment and payrolls are shown for such functions as administration, education, corrections, police, fire protection, utilities, health, public welfare, parks, libraries, sanitation, highways, and transit. Data are also provided for labor-management relations, employee organizations, employee benefits, and unemployment, health, and life insurance. There are four files in this collection. File A provides detailed statistics for each state and local government, File B has the data for local governmental units aggregated by county, and File C has national and state summaries for the following types of governments: (1) State and Local Government Total, (2) State Government, (3) Local Government, (4) Local Governments in SMSA's, (5) Counties, (6) Municipalities, (7) Townships, (8) School Districts, and (9) Special Districts. In addition, the Name and Address File contains name, address, and corresponding government identification code for all of the local governmental units.
