The University of Michigan National Firearm Attitudes and Behaviors Study (NFABS, 2023) survey examines the prevalence, contextual factors, beliefs and perceptions surrounding firearm behaviors (e.g., ownership by gun type, safe storage, training) among a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults. In addition, the survey identifies perceptions and attitudes about both firearm behaviors and healthcare-based firearm safety.

Gallup conducted the FACTS (Firearm Safety Among Children and Teens) survey with the University of Michigan to learn more about the health behaviors and attitudes of U.S. families and teens, including substance use, driving, fighting, guns, as well as parent-teen communication about these issues. The survey was administered by Gallup from June 24, 2020 to July 22, 2020 to a national sample of adults/guardians of adolescents 14-18 years of age and older. The first part of the survey was answered by the parent or guardian. After parents/guardians completed the survey, they were asked to provide parental consent for their child to take the second part survey. If they opted to provide permission, their child was asked to answer the rest of the questions in the survey.

In 2015, the Bureau of Justice Assistance's (BJA) selected the team of National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and APCO Worldwide to distribute firearm locks and conduct safety education activities under its Firearm Locks Distribution and Safe Storage Program (FLD/SSP). The National Institute of Justice funded the RAND Corporation to conduct an process and implementation evaluation of the FLD/SSP. NSSF titled their effort Project ChildSafe (PCS) Communities, a community-focused effort that was developed using the framework of their national Project ChildSafe initiative. The main research objectives were to monitor and document the PCS Communities program's design; assess areas of success and strengths in the implementation process, including the effectiveness of partnerships; identify challenges to implementation of the program with fidelity to the planned design.
