American Housing Survey (AHS) - Table Creator (ICPSR 36753)

The American Housing Survey (AHS), the most comprehensive housing survey in the U.S., provides up-to-date information on the size and composition of the housing stock in our country. This survey delivers information about the types of homes in which people are now living and the characteristics of these homes, as well as the costs of running and maintaining them. National data are collected every other year and metropolitan area data are collected on a rotating basis. The AHS is sponsored by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The AHS Table Creator gives data users the ability to create customized tables from the AHS data without having to use the Public Use File (microdata).

Like the microdata, the AHS Table Creator provides current information on a wide range of housing subjects, including size and composition of the nation's housing inventory, vacancies, fuel usage, physical condition of housing units, characteristics of occupants, equipment breakdowns, home improvements, mortgages and other housing costs, people eligible for and beneficiaries of subsidized housing, home values, and characteristics of recent movers.

For the first time since 1985, the survey selected new national and metropolitan area longitudinal samples. In addition to the "core" data, the AHS collected "topical" data using a series of topical modules. The 2015 AHS includes topical supplements on 1) the presence of arts and cultural opportunities in the community, 2) health and safety hazards in the home, 3) food insecurity, and 4) the use of housing counseling services. Data users can also explore the new national and metropolitan area longitudinal samples as well as the topical supplements using the AHS Table Creator.

Policy analysts, program managers, budget analysts, and Congressional staff use the AHS data and table creator to monitor supply and demand, as well as changes in housing conditions and costs, in order to assess housing needs. Analyses based on the AHS are used to advise the executive and legislative branches in the development of housing policies. HUD uses the AHS to improve efficiency and effectiveness and design housing programs appropriate for different target groups, such as first-time home buyers and the elderly. Academic researchers and private organizations also use AHS data in efforts of specific interest and concern to their respective communities.

The AHS is conducted every two years from May and September in odd-numbered years. HUD sometimes adjusts this schedule and/or sample depending on budget constraints. Public use microdata and reports are released approximately 12 months after data collection.

The major focuses of this Euro-Barometer survey are the environment and personal health. Opinions were sought on environmental issues such as nuclear accidents and radioactivity, pollution, and conservation of natural resources, as well as on the activities surrounding the European Year of the Environment. Health-related issues focused on cancer: smoking, knowledge and views regarding the causes of cancer, the extent of its occurrence in society, and medical recommendations for its early detection and prevention. Respondents were also asked if they had undergone medical examinations to screen for cancer. Women were questioned about specific kinds of cancer detection examinations as well. Other health-related items concerned dietary regimens and sports activities. In addition, respondents were asked about political party preferences, life satisfaction, views on national goals and national achievements, and attitudes toward the Economic Community and its policies, especially the Economic Community's Common Agricultural Policy, the European Parliament, the creation of the single common market in 1992, and use of daylight savings time. The data include demographic, socioeconomic, and geographic information on respondents.

American Housing Survey, 2009: New Orleans Data (ICPSR 30943)

This data collection is part of the American Housing Metropolitan Survey (AHS-MS, or "metro") which is conducted in odd-numbered years. It cycles through a set of 21 metropolitan areas, surveying each one about once every six years. The metro survey, like the national survey, is longitudinal. This particular survey provides information on the characteristics of a New Orleans metropolitan sample of housing units, including apartments, single-family homes, mobile homes, and vacant housing units in 2009. The data are presented in eight separate parts: Part 1, Home Improvement Record, Part 2, Journey to Work Record, Part 3, Mortgages Recorded, Part 4, Housing Unit Record (Main Record), Recodes (One Record per Housing Unit), and Weights, Part 5, Manager and Owner of Rental Units Record, Part 6, Person Record, Part 7, High Burden Unit Record, and Part 8, Recent Mover Groups Record.

Part 1 data include questions about upgrades and remodeling, cost of alterations and repairs, as well as the household member who performed the alteration/repair. Part 2 data include journey to work or commuting information, such as method of transportation to work, length of trip, and miles traveled to work. Additional information collected covers number of hours worked at home, number of days worked at home, average time respondent leaves for work in the morning or evening, whether respondent drives to work alone or with others, and a few other questions pertaining to self-employment and work schedule. Part 3 data include mortgage information, such as type of mortgage obtained by respondent, amount and term of mortgages, as well as years needed to pay them off. Other items asked include monthly payment amount, reason mortgage was taken out, and who provided the mortgage. Part 4 data include household-level information, including demographic information, such as age, sex, race, marital status, income, and relationship to householder. The following topics are also included: data recodes, unit characteristics, and weighting information.

Part 5 data include information pertaining to owners of rental properties and whether the owner/resident manager lives on-site. Part 6 data include individual person level information, in which respondents were queried on basic demographic information (i.e. age, sex, race, marital status, income, and relationship to householder), as well as if they worked at all last week, month and year moved into residence, and their ability to perform everyday tasks and whether they have difficulty hearing, seeing, and concentrating or remembering things. Part 7 data include verification of income to cost when the ratio of income to cost is outside of certain tolerances. Respondents were asked whether they receive help or assistance with grocery bills, clothing and transportation expenses, child care payments, medical and utility bills, as well as with rent payments. Part 8 data include recent mover information, such as how many people were living in last unit before move, whether last residence was a condo or a co-op, as well as whether this residence was outside of the United States.

The Eurobarometer series is a unique cross-national and cross-temporal survey program conducted on behalf of the European Commission. These surveys regularly monitor public opinion in the European Union (EU) member countries and consist of standard modules and special topic modules. The standard modules address attitudes towards European unification, institutions and policies, measurements for general socio-political orientations, as well as respondent and household demographics. The special topic modules address such topics as agriculture, education, natural environment and resources, public health, public safety and crime, and science and technology.

This round of Eurobarometer surveys covers the following special topics: (1) energy in the EU, (2) citizens' rights, (3) e-communications, (4) the internal market, and (5) carbon dioxide capture and storage. Information was collected on potential policies and ways to reduce energy consumption, the performance of EU administration, opinions about citizens' most important rights, and report access, use, and providers of various technology and media, including the Internet. Additional information includes respondents' views on employment across EU countries, counterfeiting and piracy, the handling of carbon dioxide, and effects on climate change.

Demographic and other background information collected includes age, gender, nationality, marital status and parental relations, left-right political self-placement, occupation, age when stopped full-time education, household composition, ownership of a fixed or a mobile telephone and other durable goods, difficulties in paying bills, level in society, and Internet use. In addition, country-specific data includes type and size of locality, region of residence, and language of interview (select countries).

The International Social Survey Program (ISSP) is an ongoing program of crossnational collaboration. Formed in 1983, the group develops topical modules dealing with important areas of social science as supplements to regular national surveys. This collection contains data from Bulgaria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Germany (East and West), Great Britain, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Norway, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, and the United States. Respondents were asked to comment on various topics regarding nature and the environment, including the role of science and scientific solutions to environmental problems, protection of the environment through higher prices of goods or higher taxes, and health issues like exposure to radiation and pollution. In addition, respondents were asked to estimate the effects of nuclear power stations, industrial air pollution, and pesticides used in farming on themselves, their families, and the environment. Additional information was elicited regarding measures respondents were taking to protect the environment, such as whether they drove, recycled, ate meat, lowered the heat when out (during the winter), and turned off lights when leaving a room. Participating countries in the 2000 survey included Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Latvia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Norway, Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. Respondents were queried on topics regarding nature and the environment, the role of science and scientific solutions to environmental problems, the effects of population and economic growth on the environment, protection of the environment through higher prices of goods or higher taxes, and the role of government, businesses, industries, and citizens in protecting the environment. This round of Eurobarometer surveys queried respondents on standard Eurobarometer measures, such as how satisfied they were with their present life, whether they attempted to persuade others close to them to share their views on subjects they held strong opinions about, whether they discussed political matters, and how they viewed the need for societal change. Additional questions focused on the respondents' knowledge of and opinions on the European Union (EU) including how well-informed they felt about it, what sources of information about the EU they used, whether their country had benefited from being an EU member (or would benefit from being a future member), and the extent of their personal interest in EU matters. Another major focus of the surveys was to ask respondents to express their opinion in regard to the European Constitution, including its adoption and ratification. Respondents also were asked about EU enlargement including whom they would favor to join the EU, the political, social, and economic effects of enlargement, and initiatives for the success of further EU enlargement. In addition, respondents were asked questions about exports versus imports and migration among the EU's old and new member states, the accession of Western Balkan countries and Turkey, and financial assistance available to EU member and candidate countries. Special topics included quality of life, avian influenza, and energy issues. For the first special topic, quality of life, the survey asked respondents to evaluate the economic, social, and environmental situation among several domains, in addition to their personal financial status and quality of life, and to identify priorities for the improvement of the EU economy. This round of Eurobarometer surveys queried respondents on standard Eurobarometer measures, such as how satisfied they were with their present life, whether they attempted to persuade others close to them to share their views on subjects they held strong opinions about, whether they discussed political matters, what their country's goals should be for the next 10 or 15 years, and how they viewed the need for societal change. Additional questions focused on the respondents' knowledge of and opinions on the European Union (EU), including how well-informed they felt about the EU, what sources of information about the EU they used, whether their country had benefited from being an EU member (or would benefit from being a future member), and the extent of their personal interest in EU matters. Another major focus of the surveys was to ask respondents to express their opinion regarding EU enlargement including whom they would favor to join the EU, and in particular, the possible accession of Turkey. Respondents residing in EU countries were asked to identify fears they may have regarding EU enlargement. All respondents were asked their opinion about the effects of and the EU's role in globalization. This round of Eurobarometer surveys diverged from the standard Eurobarometer measures and queried respondents on (1) the European Union (EU) and its neighbors, (2) services of general interest, (3) employment and social policy, (4) energy technologies, and (5) family planning. For the first topic, the European Union and its neighbors, respondents were asked to identify the number of current EU member countries and those countries that were to join the EU in the near future. In addition, the survey gathered respondents' opinions on their interactions with individuals from other countries, and the relationship between the EU and certain neighboring countries, i.e., the European Neighborhood Policy. Secondly, respondents were asked to identify services of general interest (telephone, the Internet, electric, water, postal, public transit, and banking system) that were most important and used, and about access to particular services, the affordability of services received, provider comparison and contracts, and consumer complaints. In regard to the third topic, employment and social policy, respondents were asked whether they had heard of specific government funds or programs such as the European Social Fund. In addition, respondents answered questions about past, current, and future employment, job training, unemployment insurance, and measures to hire and retain employees. For the topic of energy technologies, respondents were asked to identify issues of concern pertaining to energy and their nation, and about sources of energy, methods of energy production, energy consumption, EU dependence on energy, and energy policy and research. Finally, the survey collected information on respondents' views in regard to family planning. Questions were asked about family size, the timing of giving birth to and raising children, decision-making in having another child, and the future of respondents' household situations. This round of Eurobarometer surveys diverged from standard trend questions, instead focusing on agriculture, energy, and discrimination issues. Respondents gave their views on the role of the agricultural policy of the European Union (EU), whether the policy was playing its role well or badly, in what situations the EU should use an agricultural policy, and whether the EU should subsidize agricultural products or grant more funds to the overall rural economy and to direct support for farmers. Another subject of the surveys was energy problems. Respondents indicated to what extent different sources of energy were used in their countries, whether energy use was increasing, which energy sources contributed significantly to global warming and climate change, and which factors could make a significant impact on the amount of energy used in the EU. Those polled provided their opinions on how to solve the problem of EU dependency on other countries in terms of energy supply, what governments' priorities with respect to energy should be, and the main reason for lack of interest among young people in energy-related matters. They were also asked what they were doing to save energy, what energy-saving measures they would support, whether they would pay more for energy produced from renewable sources, whether they paid attention to energy use when buying products, whether they knew how much they paid for electricity last year, and whether they were aware of EU activities in energy-related research. Respondents named what sources they used to obtain information about energy issues, gave their opinions about producing nuclear energy using nuclear fusion, named energy-related areas that they would like to know more about, indicated which energy sources would be least expensive, most efficient, and environmentally friendly in 2050, and commented on whether in 20 years all energy needs would be satisfied by one or by a mix of different energy sources, and if so, which ones. The poll also elicited respondents' views on discrimination issues. Those polled were asked whether in the last two years they themselves were discriminated against or harassed or witnessed someone being discriminated against or harassed at work, when looking for a job, in public places, when getting housing, or when they were at school, and if so, what the reason was. Respondents were also asked whether they and people in general thought that it was right/wrong to refuse to give anyone a job, training, or promotion, or to deal differently with customers based on their ethnicity, religion, physical disability, mental illness, age, or sexual orientation. In addition, respondents were asked whether they knew their rights in case they felt discriminated against and whether they were willing to complain or go to court if something like that happened. Respondents gave their opinions on whether Condit should resign from office, how much his moral values mattered to respondents in evaluating his job performance, whether Condit had hurt the investigation into Levy's disappearance, whether he had told the police everything, and whether respondents minded that Condit had misled the public about his relationship with Levy. The major focus of this Euro-Barometer is the respondent's knowledge of and attitudes toward the nations of the Third World. Topics covered include the culture and customs of these nations, the existence of poverty and hunger, and the respondent's opinions on how best to provide assistance to Third World countries. Individuals answered questions on social and political conditions as well as on the level of economic development in these countries. Additionally, respondents were asked to assess the state of relations between the respondent's country and various Third World nations. Another focus of this data collection concerns energy problems and resources in the countries of the European Economic Community. Respondents were asked to choose which regions of the world are considered to be reliable suppliers of fossil fuel for the future and to evaluate the risks that various industrial installations such as chemical and nuclear power plants pose to people living nearby. Respondents were also asked about solutions to the need for additional energy supplies in the future. Possible solutions included the development or continued development of nuclear power, the encouragement of research into producing renewable energy sources such as solar energy, and the conservation of energy. As in previous surveys in this series, respondents' attitudes toward the Community, life satisfaction, and social goals continued to be monitored. The survey also asked each individual to assess the advantages and disadvantages of the creation of a single common European market and whether they approved or disapproved of current efforts to unify western Europe. In addition, the respondent's political orientation, outlook for the future, and socioeconomic and demographic characteristics were probed.

Respondents were asked whether they would approve of building more plants powered by coal to generate electricity, whether using coal, natural gas, nuclear power, and/or renewable sources to generate electricity was a good idea, and whether global warming needs to be a priority for government leaders. They were also asked about the causes of global warming and ways to reduce global warming. This study is part of a continuing series of monthly polls that solicit public opinion on the presidency and on a range of other political and social issues. Each data file in the collection represents a distinct nationwide survey that was conducted during 1979. Approximately 1,000-1,500 randomly selected adults were interviewed by telephone in each poll. Respondents were asked to give their opinions of President Jimmy Carter and his handling of the presidency, foreign affairs, and the economy, as well as their views on a range of current social and economic issues. In addition the March 1979 Poll on Peace in the Middle East (Part 3) focused specifically on the peace treaty signed by Egypt and Israel. Respondents were asked if they believed this agreement would lead to long-term peace between the two nations, whether peace between Israel and other Arab countries was likely, and whether President Carter's participation and the United States' role in facilitating negotiations were necessary to achieve the peace agreement. Nuclear power and energy shortages were explored in Part 4, April 1979 Poll on Nuclear Power. Respondents were asked if they agreed that there was a need for more nuclear power plants, how they felt about having a nuclear power plant in their own community, and, given the choice, if they would rather build more power plants, cut back on personal use of energy, or pay higher prices for foreign oil. Other questions concerned how increasing gasoline prices might affect driving habits, the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant accident, and whether or not solar energy could solve the energy crisis. The June 1979 Poll-Pre-1980 Election (Part 5) focused on qualities voters looked for in presidential candidates and how ongoing domestic and international issues might affect their pre-election voting preferences. Specific topics included inflation, the energy crisis, and the arms race. Respondents were asked how rising gasoline prices, lines at gas stations, and the prospect of gasoline rationing had impacted their lives and driving habits, what they thought about the arms limitation talks between the United States and the Soviet Union, and whether the SALT treaty, if approved, would reduce the chance of war with the Soviet Union. The primary focus of Part 6, July 1979 Poll on the Oil Shortage, were gasoline and oil shortages, gasoline rationing, increasing energy prices, proposals for reducing energy consumption, and the United States' dependence on foreign oil. Respondents' views on presidential candidates, the influx of Asian refugees ('boat people'), and the possible legalization of marijuana were also elicited. The Mid-July 1979 Poll after President Carter's Speech (Part 7) explored respondents' reactions to the crisis in national confidence that President Carter had referred to in his televised speech. Respondents were asked whether they believed there was a crisis in confidence in the country, and if listening to the speech had changed their own sense of confidence in the United States. In Part 8, November 1979 Poll on Issues of 1979 (with Pre-1980 Election Focus), respondents were asked to rate how they felt things were going in the United States and in their personal life, how this compared to five years before and whether they anticipated the following five years to be better or worse. Additional questions concerned leadership qualities of presidential candidates, abortion rights, the ordination of women, whether the United States should negotiate with the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), and whether the SALT treaty should or should not be approved by the Senate. Background information on respondents includes voter participation history, political party affiliation, political orientation, age, race, religion, education, household income, armed forces service, and participation in labor unions.

One in a series of studies on customer response to utility regulatory pricing in early 1975, the Wisconsin demonstration project was carried out by the Federal Energy Administration (FEA) and the Wisconsin Public Service Commission (PSC) from 1976 to 1980. The study was originally called the Wisconsin Electricity Consumer Survey and was an experiment to generate and analyze data on the effects of peak-load pricing on residential electric consumption. The experimental design featured nine distinct peak load pricing treatments, a time of day demand treatment, a seasonal flat-rate treatment, and a control group. Six sets of data resulted from the demonstration: questionnaire surveys of the customers (both control and experimental), summary demographic information, utility load reports, weather data, and customer usage records. All six sets (representing the five main parts of the Demonstration Project series) are available in this data collection. Part 1 contains the customer survey response data from 400 control participants, and Part 2 contains the customer survey response data from 399 experimental participants. Data for both parts were gathered in the second only of three survey waves, which was administered in March 1979. Parts 4-6 each contain 28 days of data, with Parts 4 and 6 including hourly data. Parts 4-6 also contain identifying information that links their data to the pertinent customer/participant's demographic data in Part 3.

The study was originally titled the Connecticut Off-Peak Pricing Opportunity Study and the Electricity Usage Study and was an experiment to generate and analyze data on the effects of peak-load pricing on residential electric consumption. Household electric consumption data were collected for one year, and the experimental design featured a seasonally differentiated time of day rate. Five sets of data resulted from the demonstration: questionnaire survey of the customers, summary demographic information, utility load reports, weather data, and customer usage records. The experimental design featured a seasonally differentiated time of day rate. A strike by the Dayton Power and Light employees from January to April of 1977 had a negative impact on the data collection. Five sets of data resulted from the demonstration: questionnaire survey of the customers, summary demographic information, utility load reports, weather data, and customer usage records. One in a series of studies on customer response to utility regulatory pricing in early 1975, the North Carolina demonstration project was carried out by the North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC) under a cooperative agreement with the Department of Energy. The participating utilities were Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation (BREM or BR) and Carolina Power and Light Company (CP&L). Research Triangle Institute (RTI) provided the research and analysis support to the project, and ICF, Inc. consulted on the time-of-use rate design. The experiment lasted from 1977 to 1979 and involved residential customers of the two participating utilities. Four sets of data resulted from the demonstration: questionnaire survey data from the customers, summary demographic information, utility load reports, and customer usage records. (No weather data were collected.) Three of the sets are available in this data collection. Parts 2 and 3 contain 28 days of data, including hourly data. Variables pertaining to general housing characteristics cover number of rooms, type of heating and air-conditioning equipment, and whether the housing units had complete kitchens and plumbing facilities. Information on costs incurred for mortgage payments, rent, real estate taxes, property insurance, utilities, parking, and garbage collection permits comparisons of housing costs from one year to another between geographic areas. Limited data are provided on costs of additions, alterations, replacements, and repairs made to the property.

This data collection provides information on characteristics of housing units in 11 selected Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) of the United States. Although the unit of analysis is the housing unit rather than its occupants, the survey also is a comprehensive source of information on the demographic characteristics of household residents. Data collected include general housing characteristics such as the year the structure was built, type and number of living quarters, occupancy status, presence of commercial or medical establishments on the property, and property value. Data are also provided on kitchen and plumbing facilities, type of heating fuel used, source of water, sewage disposal, and heating and air-conditioning equipment. Questions about housing quality include condition of walls and floors, adequacy of heat in winter, information on heating equipment breakdowns, availability of electrical outlets in rooms, concealed wiring, basement and roof water leakage, and exterminator service for mice and rats. Data related to housing expenses include mortgage or rent payments, utility costs, fuel costs, property insurance costs, real estate taxes, and garbage collection fees. Questions are also asked about neighborhood conditions such as quality of roads, and presence of crime, trash, litter, street noise, abandoned structures, commercial activity, and odors or smoke. Other items cover the adequacy of services such as public transportation, schools, shopping facilities, police protection, recreation facilities, and hospitals or clinics. In addition to housing characteristics, data on age, sex, race, marital status, income, and relationship to householder are provided for each household member. Additional data are supplied for the householder, including years of school completed, Spanish origin, and length of residence.
