Effects of Instructional Strategies on Pupils' Comfort and Confidence in Using Science Kits in Rural Primary Schools in Asunafo South District, Ghana (ICPSR 246944)

Science education in Ghana faces persistent challenges in translating curriculum objectives into hands-on practice, particularly in rural schools. The rollout of curriculum-based science kits presents an opportunity to address this gap; however, limited evidence exists on how instructional strategies influence pupils' comfort and confidence in using these tools. This study examined the effects of instructional sequencing on Basic 6 students' comfort and confidence in using science kits in rural Ghanaian primary schools. Guided by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), a convergent parallel mixed-methods quasi-experimental design compared two instructional sequences: kit use before formal instruction (n = 17) and kit use after instruction (n = 24). Quantitative data were collected via a Perceived Ease of Use questionnaire, while qualitative data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with 10 students. Students generally perceived the kit as easy to use. A statistically significant difference was found between groups (U = 52.0, p < .001, r = 0.745). Students using the kit after instruction (M = 3.87) reported significantly higher confidence than those using it before instruction (M = 3.18). Qualitative findings highlighted the role of teacher explanation and structured guidance in improving perceived usability. Instructional sequencing significantly influences pupils' comfort and confidence. The reinforcement model enhances perceived ease of use. Recommendations include reinforcement-oriented instructional approaches and targeted professional development.

Linking Student Absenteeism on Different Days of the Week to Student Achievement (ICPSR 239460)

Extensive research has found that when students miss more school days, they have lower test scores. However, little is known about the ways in which students miss these days – namely how missing different days of the week might link differently to test scores. Having this insight, however, holds important knowledge for building interventions and supporting instruction. In that vein, this research explored whether accruing absences on particular days of the week linked differently to student performance on standardized exams. Relying on school district data for students in elementary school, there were two key findings. First, missing any amount of school is negatively associated with lower achievement. That said, our second finding suggests that missing more Mondays stood out as particularly negative for test score performance. The results were only present with excused absences, highlighting that this issue is about missing school, not disengagement necessarily. The results differed for different student groups, and implications are thus discussed.

The Economic Power of Elites, Human Capital, and Industrial Change in Late Imperial Russia (ICPSR 231104)

This project studies the economic impacts of land ownership concentration among the aristocratic elite in the Russian Empire. I document that areas with a higher concentration of noble land ownership were associated with lower levels of primary education during 1880-1911. Exploring the mechanisms, I show that by controlling local governments the landed elites decreased public spending on education, shifting the financial burden to peasant households in the 1880s-1890s. I also demonstrate that the extension of school provision through a government program of schooling subsidies after 1905 led to a relatively large increase in enrollment rates in regions with high noble landownership concentration, suggesting initial underinvestment in education in these areas. Finally, the paper identifies a significant negative influence of landed elites on industrial growth and firm productivity, with up to 56\% of this effect attributable to the human capital channel.

Abstract:Multilingual learners (MLs) represent an increasing proportion of public school students. While much attention has been given to their academic performance in English language arts and math, less research has addressed their academic performance in science, particularly in elementary school. This study leveraged nationally representative data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study of 2010-11 to document the science test score trajectories of MLs from kindergarten through fifth grade. Using descriptive statistics and regression analyses, our findings document wide variation in elementary science test performance among subgroups of MLs while also documenting the rapid gains this group makes in science performance across the elementary years as compared to non-MLs. Our study is among the first to use nationally representative data to examine science learning trajectories of MLs and provides a foundation for policy, practice, and future research aimed at understanding how the linguistic assets of MLs promote science learning.

Multilingual learners’ exposure to science and language inputs in elementary school: ¿Qué sabemos? (ICPSR 209664)

As linguistic diversity continues to increase in the United States public school system, schools are expected to meet the needs of their ever-changing student body. While much attention within education research has understandably focused on multilingual learners’ (MLs) English language acquisition, an emergent body of work points to science as an important subject for attention among elementary MLs. We suggest that understanding what science and language inputs are afforded to MLs in schools can contribute to understanding the needs and opportunities for enhancing MLs’ science learning. This study leveraged nationally representative data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study of 2010–2011 to explore the science and language inputs available to MLs in elementary school. Using descriptive statistics, our analysis of science and language inputs provides evidence on what MLs have, or do not have, access to inside of their schools. Science inputs appear to be relatively evenly distributed across classrooms serving non-MLs, MLs, and subgroups therein. In comparison, language inputs are differentially distributed across ML subgroups, but they are distributed in ways that may align with student needs. However, while the science inputs do not necessarily vary across subgroups, the language inputs do, and this may affect how students can engage with science inputs. In understanding what science and language inputs MLs are afforded, this study provides a foundation for how to improve formal learning environments for them, especially regarding science learning.

Effectiveness of a SEL Program for Both Teachers and Students (ICPSR 208044)

This study investigated the effects of the Leader in Me (LiM), a social-emotional learning program implemented in thousands of schools. A mixed-method design included (1) a collective case study in four diverse, high-implementing elementary schools and (2) a post hoc quasi-experiment using propensity score 1:3 matching of 117 LiM and 348 non-LiM schools to compare achievement and discipline incident rates. The case study indicated that participants perceived TLIM as improving social-emotional competencies for both teachers and students. Teachers reported being more prosocial, feeling more camaraderie, using more effective discipline, developing better teacher-student relationships, and enjoying teaching more. Students were more prosocial, confident and motivated, and had fewer problem behaviors. School climate improved. Results replicated across four diverse schools. The quasi-experiment supported results of the collective case study. Schools implementing TLIM had higher mathematics and ELA, but not science, scores on state proficiency exams and fewer discipline incidents.

Reclassification and Multilingual Learners' Science Achievement. TESOL Quarterly.https://doi.org/10.1002/tesq.3270Abstract:This study contributes to a growing body of scholarship at the intersection of bilingual education and education policy and examines reclassification, or the transition out of formal English language services in schools, as one potential lever in accelerating or decelerating multilingual learners’ science learning. More specifically, it traces multilingual learners’ science academic achievement vis-à-vis science test scores over a six-year period using the nationally-representative Early Childhood Longitudinal Study of 2010–11 (ECLS-K:2011) data set. We use regression analyses with panel data to explore the relationship of reclassification with MLs’ science achievement at a national scale, and then, how variation in contextual factors (including family, school, and individual characteristics) shapes this relationship. Results show that, after controlling for covariates and prior test scores, reclassification is not significantly associated with differential science test scores when compared to students that retain their EL status. Results further show that reclassification is associated with higher science achievement for MLs who were previously in a dual-language program but lower scores for those with higher prior achievement. We conclude with implications for the reclassification process, as well as directions for future research on reclassification, multilingual learners, and academic achievement.Funding:This research was made possible by a National Science Foundation DRK-12 grant. This study is an impact evaluation of the "Tutoring with the Lightning Squad" (TWLS) program. Research was funded by a grant awarded to the Success for All Foundation by the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences to study the implementation and effectiveness of the TWLS program. The TWLS research study employed a cluster randomized controlled trial design to assess the impact of the program on participating students, as well as on specific subgroups of students, including those who participated in at least half of possible tutoring sessions. A secondary study compared the effects of small-group tutoring to a one-to-one version of tutoring with the lowest-achieving students in the sample, and an associated implementation study gathered data on the fidelity of implementation. The study also included a cost analysis to provide information on program costs.

This study involved random assignment of 80 school-based teams of educators to one of four conditions: (1) lesson study supported by a fractions resource kit; (2) lesson study without the fractions resource kit; (3) fractions resource kit without lesson study; or (4) practice-as-usual (no fractions resource kit, asked to refrain from lesson study). Teams were mailed the materials for their condition and used them locally. Each educator team included at least one grade 3 or 4 teacher who agreed to video record three fractions lessons, and their students comprise the student sample. Outcome measures focus on instruction, student fractions knowledge, teachers' fractions knowledge, beliefs about teaching-learning, and professional learning perceptions.

The Fast Response Survey System (FRSS) was established in 1975 by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), United States Department of Education. FRSS is designed to collect issue-oriented data within a relatively short time frame. FRSS collects data from state education agencies, local education agencies, public and private elementary and secondary schools, public school teachers, and public libraries. To ensure minimal burden on respondents, the surveys are generally limited to three pages of questions, with a response burden of about 30 minutes per respondent. Sample sizes are relatively small (usually about 1,000 to 1,500 respondents per survey) so that data collection can be completed quickly. Data are weighted to produce national estimates of the sampled education sector. The sample size is large enough to permit limited breakouts by classification variables. However, as the number of categories within the classification variables increases, the sample size within categories decreases, which results in larger sampling errors for the breakouts by classification variables.

The Elementary School Arts Education Survey, Fall 2009 data provide national estimates on student access to arts education and resources available for such instruction in public elementary schools during fall 2009. This is one of a set of seven surveys that collected data on arts education during the 2009-10 school year. In addition to this survey, the set includes a survey of secondary school principals, three elementary teacher-level surveys, and two secondary teacher-level surveys. A stratified sample design was used to select principals for this survey. Data collection was conducted September 2009 through June 2010, and 988 eligible principals completed the survey by web, mail, fax, or telephone.

The elementary school survey collected data on the availability and characteristics of music, visual arts, dance, and drama/theatre instruction; the type of space used for arts instruction; the availability of curriculum guides for arts teachers to follow; the availability of curriculum-based arts education activities outside of regular school hours; and whether those teaching the subject are arts specialists. Principals also reported on school or district provision of teacher professional development in the arts; arts education programs, activities, and events; and school-community partnerships. Principals were also asked to provide administrative information such as school instructional level, school enrollment size, community type, and percent of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.

The Arts Education Surveys of Elementary School Teachers provide national estimates on arts education and arts instructors in public elementary schools during the 2009-10 school year. This data collection contains three surveys that provide information about music specialists, visual arts specialists, and self-contained classroom teachers. These three surveys are part of a set of seven surveys that collected data on arts education during the 2009-10 school year. In addition to these elementary teacher surveys, the set includes a survey of elementary school principals, a survey of secondary school principals, and two secondary teacher-level surveys. A stratified sample design was used to select teachers and arts specialists (music and visual arts) for the Arts Education Surveys of Elementary School Teachers. Data collection was conducted September 2009 through August 2010. Altogether, 1,148 eligible music specialists, 918 eligible visual arts specialists, and 734 eligible self-contained classroom teachers completed the surveys by web, mail, fax, or telephone.

The elementary teacher surveys collected data on the availability of curriculum-based arts education activities outside of regular school hours, teaching load of music and visual arts specialists in elementary schools, teacher participation in various professional development activities, the ways in which self-contained classroom teachers teach arts education as part of their instructional program, and teachers' use of formal methods of assessment of students' achievement in the arts. Furthermore, teachers were also asked to provide administrative information such as school level, school enrollment size, school community type, and percent of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.

National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) (ICPSR 36032)

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students in elementary and secondary schools in the United States know and can do in various subject areas. Assessments are conducted periodically in mathematics, reading, science, writing, the arts, civics, economics, geography, United States history, and beginning in 2014, in Technology and Engineering Literacy (TEL). Since NAEP assessments are administered uniformly using the same sets of test booklets across the United States, NAEP results serve as a common metric for all states and selected urban districts. The assessment stays essentially the same from year to year, with only carefully documented changes. This permits NAEP to provide a clear picture of student academic progress over time and for teachers, principals, parents, policymakers, and researchers to use NAEP results to assess progress and develop ways to improve education in the United States. There are two types of assessments: main NAEP and long-term trend NAEP. Main NAEP is administered to fourth-, eighth-, and twelfth-graders across the United States in a variety of subjects. The Main NAEP is conducted between the last week of January and the first week in March every year. National results are available for all assessments and subjects. Results for states and select urban districts are available in some subjects for grades 4 and 8. The Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA) is a special project developed to determine the feasibility of reporting district-level NAEP results for large urban districts. In 2009 a trial state assessment was administered at grade 12. Long-term trend NAEP is administered nationally every four years. During the same academic year, 13-year-olds are assessed in the fall, 9-year-olds in the winter, and 17-year-olds in the spring. Long-term trend assessments measure student performance in mathematics and reading, and allow the performance of students from recent time periods to be compared with students since the early 1970s.

For example, the 1997 and 2008 NAEP arts assessments were part of the Main NAEP Assessments. The NAEP 1997 Arts Assessment was conducted nationally at grade 8. For music and visual arts, representative samples of public and nonpublic school students were assessed. A special "targeted" sample of students took the theatre assessment. Schools offering at least 44 classroom hours of a theatre course per semester, and offering courses including more than the history or literature of theatre, were identified. Students attending those schools who had accumulated 30 hours of theatre classes by the end of the 1996-97 school year were selected to take the theatre assessment. The NAEP 2008 Arts Assessment was administered to a nationally representative sample of 7,900 eighth-grade public and private school students. Approximately one-half of these students were assessed in music, and the other half were assessed in visual arts. The music portion of the assessment measured students' ability to respond to music in various ways. Students were asked to analyze and describe aspects of music they heard, critique instrumental and vocal performances, and demonstrate their knowledge of standard musical notation and music's role in society. The visual arts portion of the assessment included questions that measured students' ability to respond to art as well as questions that measured their ability to create art. Responding questions asked students to analyze and describe works of art and design. For example, students were asked to describe specific differences in how certain parts of an artist's self-portrait were drawn. Creating questions required students to create works of art and design of their own. For example, students were asked to create a self-portrait that was scored for identifying detail, compositional elements, and use of materials.

Most recently, in 2016, a total of 8,800 eighth-graders in the nation's public and private schools responded to and critiqued existing works of music and visual art and created their own original artwork. NCES collected and analyzed the data and released the 2016 report highlighting key findings. Average music and visual arts responding scores are reported separately on a scale of 0 to 300 points. Average creating scores for visual arts are reported on a scale of 0 to 100 percent. Results are also reported by student groups, school type, and region, as well as in comparison to the 2008 assessment.

Chicago Longitudinal Study, 1986-1989 (ICPSR 25921)

The Chicago Longitudinal Study investigates the educational and social development of a same-age cohort of 1,539 low-income, minority children (93 percent African American) who grew up in high-poverty neighborhoods in central-city Chicago and attended government-funded kindergarten programs in the Chicago Public Schools in 1985-1986. Children were at risk of poor outcomes because they face social-environmental disadvantages including neighborhood poverty, family low-income status, and other economic and educational hardships.

Study Goals

The CLS is guided by four major goals:

  1. To document patterns of school performance and social competence throughout the school-age years, including their school achievement and attitudes, academic progress, and psychosocial development.
  2. To evaluate the effects of the Child-Parent Center and Expansion Program on child and youth development. Children and families had the opportunity to participate in this unique Head Start type early childhood intervention from ages three to nine (preschool to third grade).
  3. To identify and better understand the educational and psychosocial pathways through which the effects of early childhood experiences are manifested, and more generally, through which scholastic and behavioral development proceeds.
  4. To investigate the contributions to children's educational and social development of a variety of personal, family, school, and community factors, especially those that can be altered by program or policy interventions to prevent learning difficulties and promote positive outcomes.

Studies addressing the first two goals have been reported extensively. Participation in the Child-Parent Center Program for different lengths of time, for example, has been found to be significantly associated with higher levels of school achievement into adolescence, with higher levels of consumer skills, with enhanced parent involvement in children's education, and with lower rates of grade retention and special education, lower rates of early school dropout, and with lower rates of delinquent behavior (Reynolds, 1994, 1995, 2000; Reynolds and Temple, 1995, 1998; Temple, Reynolds, and Miedel, in press). Children's patterns of school and social adjustment over time (Reynolds and Bezruczko, 1993; Reynolds and Gill, 1994; Reynolds, 2000) as well as several methodological contributions (Reynolds and Temple, 1995; Reynolds, 1998a, 1998b) also have been reported elsewhere. Examples of studies addressing goals three and four are reported in a special issue of the Journal of School Psychology (Reynolds, 1999).

The Chicago Longitudinal Study is particularly appropriate for addressing these and other goals for two reasons. First, the CLS is one of the most extensive and comprehensive studies undertaken of a low-income, urban sample. Data were collected beginning during children's preschool years and have continued on a yearly basis throughout the school-age years. Multiple sources of data have been utilized in this on-going study, including teacher surveys, child surveys and interviews, parent surveys and interviews, school administrative records, standardized tests, and classroom observations. Thus, the impact of a variety of individual, family, and school-related factors can be investigated.

A second unique feature of the CLS is that although the project concerns child development, an emphasis is given to factors and experiences that are alterable by program or policy intervention both within and outside of schools. Besides information on early childhood intervention, information has been collected on classroom adjustment, parent involvement and parenting practices, grade retention and special education placement, school mobility, educational expectations of children, teachers, and parents, and on the school learning environment.

The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study Kindergarten Class of 1998-1999, Kindergarten-Eighth Grade Full Sample includes the kindergarten, first, third, fifth, and eighth grade data collections for the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-1999 (ECLS-K). Unlike the public-use longitudinal files released in previous rounds, this file contains all data for all ECLS-K sample cases that have been publicly released in any of the rounds. Thus, it can be used for within-year (cross-sectional) analyses of any round of data collection and cross-year (longitudinal) analyses of combinations of rounds. It focuses on children's early school experiences beginning with kindergarten through eighth grade. It is a nationally representative sample that collects information from children, their families, their teachers, and their schools. ECLS-K provides data about the effects of a wide range of family, school, community, and individual variables on children's cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development, their early learning and early performance in school, as well as their home environment, home educational practices, school environment, classroom environment, classroom curriculum, and teacher qualifications. The list below summarizes each wave of this study.

  • 1998-1999 (the Kindergarten year-Rounds 1 and 2): The ECLS-K child assessments, parent interviews, and teacher questionnaires were conducted in the fall. Children, parents, and teachers participated again in the spring, along with school administrators.

  • 1999-2000 (the First grade year-Rounds 3 and 4): The ECLS-K conducted child assessments and parent interviews for a 30 percent sub-sample in the fall. The full sample of children, parents, teachers, and school administrators participated in the spring.

  • 2002 (the Third grade year-Round 5): The ECLS-K conducted child assessments and parent interviews in the spring. Teachers and school administrators completed questionnaires.

  • 2004 (the Fifth grade year-Round 6): The ECLS-K conducted child assessments and parent interviews in the spring. Teachers and school administrators completed questionnaires.

  • 2007 (the Eighth grade year-Round 7): The ECLS-K followed the children into middle school. Information was collected from the children, their parents, teachers, and school administrators.

The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-1999 (ECLS-K) focuses on children's early school experiences beginning with kindergarten through fifth grade. It is a nationally representative sample that collects information from children, their families, their teachers, and their schools. ECLS-K provides data about the effects of a wide range of family, school, community, and individual variables on children's development, early learning, and early performance in school. This data collection contains the wave of data collected in the spring of third grade (2002). The third-grade data collection includes information about the diversity of the study children, the schools they attended, and their academic progress in the years following kindergarten. Other variables include child gender, child race, family background, childcare, childcare arrangements, food security, hours per week in child care, socioeconomic status, household income, highest level of education for parents and students, parents' employment status, teachers' evaluation practice, and usefulness of different activities in the classroom.

The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-1999 (ECLS-K) focuses on children's early school experiences beginning with kindergarten through fifth grade. It is a nationally representative sample that collects information from children, their families, their teachers, and their schools. ECLS-K provides data about the effects of a wide range of family, school, community, and individual variables on children's cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development, their early learning and early performance in school, as well as their home environment, home educational practices, school environment, classroom environment, classroom curriculum, and teacher qualifications.

With a few exceptions, the fifth grade data file contains all data collected from parents, children, teachers, or schools in the base year (fall and spring), first grade (fall and spring), third grade (spring), and fifth grade (spring) data collections. To streamline the file, however, the data from the household rosters that listed all household members, their relationship to the sampled child, and selected other characteristics are not included in the file. The composite variables describing critical household roster-based information, such as the children's family structure and selected characteristics of the family members, have been retained on the file.

Specific subjects covered by the variables in this data file include parent/child gender, parent/child race, family background, socioeconomic status, household income, parents' education level, and parents' employment and marital status. Other variables include type of childcare and childcare arrangements, the child's math, science, and reading scores, the child's learning problems and autism, as well as the child's diet issues, food security, and school food service. Variables about teachers include age, race, background, qualifications, job satisfaction, their level of impact on curriculum and policy, and time spent on classroom activities and specific subjects. Other variables include diversity of classroom students, parent-teacher discussions, family participation in school events and fundraising, whether the child's school has bars on the windows and doors, fire alarms, sprinklers, and fire extinguishers, the presence of school graffiti, as well as bus/transportation issues.

To meet the growing need for high-quality research on whole-school approaches to instructional improvement, researchers at the University of Michigan School of Education, in cooperation with the Consortium for Policy Research in Education (CPRE), conducted a large-scale, mixed method, longitudinal Study of Instructional Improvement to investigate the design, implementation, and effects on student achievement of three of the most widely-adopted whole-school school reform programs in the United States: the Accelerated Schools (ASP), America's Choice (AC), and Success for All (SFA). Each of these school reform programs sought to make "comprehensive" changes in the instructional capacity of schools, and each was being implemented in schools in diverse social environments. Each program, however, also pursued a different design for instructional improvement, and each developed particular strategies for assisting schools in the change process. In order to better understand the process of whole-school reform, Study of Instructional Improvement (SII) developed a program of research to examine how these interventions operated and to investigate their impact on schools' instructional practice and student achievement in reading and mathematics. The research program had 3 components: a longitudinal survey of 115 schools (roughly 30 schools in each of the 3 interventions under study, plus 26 matched control schools), case studies of the 3 interventions under study, and detailed case studies of 9 schools implementing the interventions under study (plus 3 matched control schools). Across all components of the SII study, the research examined alternative designs for instructional improvement, alternative strategies for putting these designs into practice in local schools, and the extent to which alternative designs and support strategies promote substantial changes in instructional capacity and student achievement in reading and mathematics. The most comprehensive component of SII was a large-scale, longitudinal, multisurvey study of schools. The use of survey research methods was intended to track the course of schools' engagement in comprehensive approaches to instructional improvement and to investigate the conditions under which this led to substantive changes in instructional practices and student achievement in reading and mathematics. The study design called for each school to participate in the study for a period of three years, although some schools voluntarily provided a fourth year of teacher, leader, and school-level information (no additional student-level data). In addition, survey researchers conducted interviews, primarily a telephone protocol with a parent or guardian of each cohort student in order to gather information on students' family background and on students' home and community environments. Researchers also gathered data from school leaders and others about the policy environments in which the schools are located. Another component of the research program involved the development of detailed case studies of a small number schools participating in the study. The case studies gathered observational, interview, and documentary evidence to better understand how instructional change processes unfolded in different school settings. Case studies were conducted in 12 schools operating in differently configured state and district policy environments. In each environment, researchers selected schools participating in one of the interventions under study as well as a "matched" control school. Finally, case study data was used to chart key similarities and differences in the design and operations of the interventions under study, to analyze how different design features affect operating strategies, and to better understand the general problem of how intervention programs can work to devise and "bring to scale" a feasible scheme for improving instruction in local schools.

Prepared by ICPSR under a project to automate major portions of the Statistique Generale de la France, this is a collection of demographic, social, education, economic, population, and vital statistics data for France, 1833-1925. This conversion project is a continuation of one conducted in 1972, for which a similar data collection was created, SOCIAL, DEMOGRAPHIC, AND EDUCATIONAL DATA FOR FRANCE, 1801-1897 (ICPSR 0048). The project to collect and prepare these data was sponsored by two French and two American groups: ICPSR and the Center for Western European Studies at the University of Michigan, and the Fourth and Sixth Sections of the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes and Conseil National de la Recherches Scientifique in France. Both collections include data recorded at the departement, arrondissement, chef-lieu, and ville level. In this collection, materials from the vital statistics series were prepared for selected years rather than for each year in the period from 1900-1925. The years that were chosen clustered around the quinquennial censuses and also included (because of the violent demographic dislocations produced by World War I) each year in the 1914-1919 period. In addition, some vital statistics for the nineteenth century (1836-1850, 1880, and 1892) obtained from fugitive published volumes that could not be located during the course of the 1972 project were prepared. The 136 datasets in this collection contain: (1) French population, economic, and social data obtained from the quenquennial censuses of 1901, 1906, 1911, and 1921, that detail the composition of the population by categories of age, sex, nativity, marital status, religion, place of residence, and occupation, (2) industrial census data for the years 1861-1896, (3) data on primary education in France for 1833, 1901, and 1906, as well as data on secondary and higher education in France for the years 1836-1850, 1880, and 1892, and (4) data from a separate series of annual vital statistics (Mouvement de la Population) that cover the years 1836-1850, 1892, and 1900-1925, citing births, deaths, and marriages in the nation.

This poll, fielded May 30-June 2, 1990, is part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that solicit public opinion on the presidency and on a range of other political and social issues. The focus of this data collection was the educational system in the United States. Respondents were asked to list the most important problems facing the country, and were then asked whether President George H.W. Bush had made any progress in improving education and whether they trusted him to make the right decisions regarding this issue. A series of questions addressed the federal government's spending on education and its involvement in local schools, which country the respondent thought did the best job of educating its children, and what single change would bring about the greatest improvement in the American education system. Respondents rated the public schools in their community and commented on the most important problems the schools were facing, the quality of local teachers, whether teachers were respected and paid well enough, and whether the respondent would be willing to pay more taxes to support local schools. Additional topics addressed the basic responsibilities of elementary and high schools, the best ways to evaluate children's progress in school, and whether proposed changes would help or hurt the education of students. Other questions asked respondents about their own educational experiences, and what career they would choose for their child. Respondents who had children currently attending elementary or high school were asked about the type of school their children attended, the frequency and type of interaction they had with their children's teachers, the amount of time spent helping their child with homework, their familiarity with their children's textbooks, and whether they would be willing to run for local school board. Demographic information includes age, race, sex, education level, household income, and political party affiliation.

The National Household Education Survey (NHES) series reports information on the condition of education in the United States by collecting data at the household level rather than using a traditional school-based data collection system. The surveys attempt to address many current issues in education, such as preprimary education, school safety and discipline, adult education, and activities related to citizenship. This survey included two topical survey components: Parent/Family Involvement in Education (PFI) and Adult and Youth Civic Involvement (CI). The PFI component, which elicited information from parents and children aged 3 years through grade 12, focused on four areas: types and frequency of family involvement in children's schools, communication with teachers or other school personnel, children's homework and behavior, and learning activities with children outside of school. Other information collected for this component pertained to student experiences at school, children's personal and demographic characteristics, household characteristics, and children's health and disability status. The PFI information is provided in Part 1, Parent and Family Involvement in Education and Civic Involvement -- Parent Data. The CI component of the survey gathered information on civic participation, sources of information about government issues, and knowledge and attitudes about government. Items were administered to youths in grades 6 through 12 (Part 2, Youth Civic Involvement Data) and their parents, as well as to a representative sample of United States adults (Part 3, Adult Civic Involvement Data). The CI component also addressed opportunities for youth to develop personal responsibility and skills that would facilitate their taking an active role in civic life. CI questions were also asked of the parents surveyed in the PFI component, and these data also can be found in Part 1. In addition to the two major topical components, a screener component of the survey collected demographic and educational information on all members in every household contacted, regardless of whether anyone in the household was selected for an extended interview. (The term "extended interview" refers to the interviews completed in the topical components of the study, i.e., the Parent PFI/CI, the Youth CI, or the Adult CI interviews.) Items on the use of public libraries by the household were also administered in the screener portion for households without Parent PFI/CI extended interviews and in the first Parent PFI/CI interview in households in which one or more children were sampled. The National Household Education Survey (NHES) series reports information on the condition of education in the United States by collecting data at the household level rather than using a traditional, school-based data collection system. The surveys attempt to address many current issues in education, such as preprimary education, school safety and discipline, adult education, and activities related to citizenship. This data collection has two major components. The School Safety and Discipline (SS&D) component (Part 1) gathered general perceptions of the school learning environment from students in grades 6 through 12 and parents/guardians of students in grades 3 through 12. Respondents were asked about academic challenge, classroom and school discipline, and student norms for hard work and good behavior. They also evaluated the safety of their schools regardless of whether they or their children had been personally victimized. This component incorporated a broad concept of victimization, including measures of "secondary victimization," such as knowledge of and witness to occurrences. These measures were included because these experiences can adversely affect the learning environment, even if the student has not been victimized directly. Parent and youth perceptions of school discipline policy were assessed. Exposure to alcohol and other drugs at school was gauged, as was parent and youth knowledge of alcohol/drug education programs. Perceptions of both parents and youths regarding peer norms for substance use, the availability of alcohol and other drugs at school, and the presence of students under the influence of alcohol or other drugs at school were also collected. Additional items covered parental expectations for academic achievement and for tobacco and alcohol use, parental efforts to educate and protect children regarding safety and substance use, parental involvement in the child's school, and the safety of the school relative to the child's neighborhood. The School Readiness (SR) component (Part 2) covers experiences in early childhood programs, the child's accomplishments and difficulties in several developmental domains, school adjustment and related problems, delayed kindergarten entry, early primary school experiences including repeating grades, the child's general health and nutritional status, home activities, and family characteristics such as stability and economic risk factors. This component of the survey, which encompasses a variety of characteristics important to school readiness, emphasizes the "whole child" approach. Altogether, 10,888 parents/guardians of children aged 3 through 7 or in second grade or below were interviewed. Interviews were conducted with 4,423 parents of preschool children, 2,126 parents of kindergartners, 4,277 parents of primary school children, and 62 parents of home-schooled children.

This study includes data collected between 1970-1974 by 21 national centers of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), from a total of approximately 250,000 students, 50,000 teachers, and 10,000 schools in 19 different countries. Students were tested on their achievement in six subject areas: science, reading comprehension, literature, civic education, and French and English as foreign languages. Between eight and 19 countries participated in each survey by testing students at one or more of the following levels: 10-year-olds (Population I), 14-year-olds (Population II), and students in the last year of pre-university schooling or programs of equivalent length (Population IV). The countries included were Australia, Belgium, Chile, Finland, France, West Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, India, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Romania, Sweden, Thailand, and the United States. In addition to student achievement data, each survey solicited information on the students' home and socioeconomic backgrounds, interests, and attitudes. Information was also gathered on characteristics of the teachers and participating schools. In terms of timing, the survey was broken down in the following stages: (1) Stage 1 (1966-1970), construction and pretesting of instruments. (2) Stage 2 (1970-1973), fieldwork and analysis for science, reading comprehension, and literature. (3) Stage 3 (1971-1974), fieldwork and analysis for civic education, English as a foreign language, and French as a foreign language. Also included is information on the military and security systems, Africanization of the army officer corps, international relations, membership in nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), communication and transportation, and social welfare. Other variables provide information on population estimates and characteristics, population density, settlement patterns, cultural pluralism, language, religion, primary and secondary school enrollment, family organization, patrilineal kin groups, class stratification, and the number of physicians per population.

This study surveyed primary and secondary school teachers in Belgium, Great Britain, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden, using the same questionnaire across all countries. France has 350 respondents, Norway 400, Germany 365, Sweden 443, the Netherlands 400, Belgium 400, and England 400. Questions in the first section of the interviews were directly related to the respondents' roles as teachers: their job satisfaction, estimates of the prestige of their jobs, comparisons of secondary and grammar school teachers and public and private school teachers, suggested educational reforms, teaching experience, and the influence of teachers as professionals on political and international affairs. In addition, respondents were asked open-ended questions probing their tolerance of political differences, their attitudes toward war, national defense efforts, and world government, their optimism or pessimism regarding international events, perceptions of other nationalities and their government's relationship with other countries, their identification of interest groups with influence in the government, and their political identification. Demographic variables include sex, age, marital status, number of children, other professional experience, and war experience.
