Replication Data for: Raising Grievances to the State: The Political Economic Effects of Anti-Corruption Crackdowns on Labor Activism in China (ICPSR 308415)

Released/updated on: 2026-07-18
Geographic coverage: China
Time period: 2011-01-01--2020-12-31

This replication package accompanies "Raising Grievances to the State: The Political Economic Effects of Anti-Corruption Crackdowns on Labor Activism in China" (Journal of Development Economics, Vol. 181, April 2026). The paper studies how government actions shape workers' expected returns to striking by exploiting China's 2012 anti-corruption campaign as a natural experiment. Using a city-level dataset linking Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) corruption inspections to labor strikes from 2011 to 2020, the analysis shows that strike incidents rise sharply after a city's first high-profile inspection, driven largely by wage-arrears disputes at private firms and concentrated in the construction and manufacturing sectors. Strikes also spread through network channels, with later-treated and neighboring cities responding to inspections elsewhere. The evidence indicates that inspections weakened firm-government ties and shifted government attention, raising workers' expected returns to striking and revealing pre-existing grievances.

The package contains the Stata (.do) and R (.R) scripts, cleaned prefecture-city-month and prefecture-city-quarter panel datasets, and documentation needed to reproduce every table and figure in the paper and its appendix, along with a README describing the data-cleaning sequence, computational requirements, and dataset provenance. Several restricted-access source files (a corruption-investigation microdataset, a national tax survey extract, and a prefecture panel from a related study) are not redistributed per their original data-use agreements; the README documents how to obtain them and which results depend on them.

ECIN Replication Package for "Favoritism under multiple sources of social pressure" (ICPSR 195463)

Released/updated on: 2024-06-09
Geographic coverage: Europe
Time period: 2011-01-01--2021-12-31
This deposit contains the replication package for "Favoritism under Multiple Sources of Social Pressure".Abstract:When social pressure leads to favoritism, policies might aim to reduce the bias by affecting its source. This paper shows that multiple sources may be present and telling them apart is important. We build a novel and granular dataset on European football games and revisit the view that supporting crowds make referees help the host team. We find this bias to remain unchanged even in stadiums closed due to Covid-19. Instead, influential host organizations emerge as the source of social pressure. This has an adverse effect on maintaining the ranking of influential teams and hindering the progress of smaller teams.

ANES 2020 Time Series Study (ICPSR 38034)

Released/updated on: 2021-07-13
Geographic coverage: United States
Time period: 2020-08-18--2020-11-03, 2020-11-03--2021-01-04

This study is part of the American National Election Study (ANES), a time-series collection of national surveys fielded continuously since 1948. The American National Election Studies are designed to present data on Americans' social backgrounds, enduring political predispositions, social and political values, perceptions and evaluations of groups and candidates, opinions on questions of public policy, and participation in political life. As with all Time Series studies conducted during years of presidential elections, respondents were interviewed during the two months preceding the November election (Pre-election interview), and then re-interviewed during the two months following the election (Post-election interview). Like its predecessors, the 2020 ANES was divided between questions necessary for tracking long-term trends and questions necessary to understand the particular political moment of 2020. The study maintains and extends the ANES time-series 'core' by collecting data on Americans' basic political beliefs, allegiances, and behaviors, which are so critical to a general understanding of politics that they are monitored at every election, no matter the nature of the specific campaign or the broader setting. This 2020 ANES study features a fresh cross-sectional sample, with respondents randomly assigned to one of three sequential mode groups: web only, mixed web (i.e., web and phone), and mixed video (i.e., video, web, and phone). The new content for the 2020 pre-election survey includes coronavirus pandemic, election integrity, corruption, impeachment, immigration and democratic norms. The pre-election survey also includes protests and unrest over policing and racism. The new content for the 2020 post-election survey includes voting experiences, anti-elitism, faith in experts or science, climate change, gun control, opioids, rural-urban identity, international trade, transgender military service, social media usage, misinformation, perceptions of foreign countries and group empathy. Phone and video interviews were conducted by trained interviewers using computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) software on computers. Unlike in earlier years, the 2020 ANES did not use computer-assisted self interviewing (CASI) during any part of the interviewer-administered modes (video and phone). Rather, in interviewer-administered modes, all questions were read out loud to respondents, and respondents also provided their answers orally. Demographic variables include respondent age, education level, political affiliation, race/ethnicity, marital status, and family composition.

Preventing and Controlling Corporate Crime: The Dual Role of Corporate Boards and Legal Sanctions, United States, 1996-2013 (ICPSR 37463)

Released/updated on: 2021-04-29
Geographic coverage: United States
Time period: 1996-01-01--2013-12-31

This project consists of secondary analysis material (syntax only, no data). The original study that the material pertains to examines two distinct but related types of corporate crime prevention and control mechanisms--one that rests on firm governance (specifically, the Board of Directors) and the other on formal legal interventions. Specifically, the study examines whether (ceteris paribus) firms with more gender diversity on their boards are less involved in offending than firms whose boards are less diverse and whether changes in board diversity over time affect firm offending patterns. Of additional interest is how firms respond to legal discovery and punishment.

Do they change their governance structures (i.e., become more diverse) due to formal legal discovery?

Are firms generally deterred from reoffending (recidivism) when discovered or does deterrence depend on the government's response to offenders?

In particular, are certain regimes (criminal, civil, or regulatory) more successful at crime control than others?

Relevant data are collected from a variety of secondary sources, including corporate financial, statistical, and governance information. These data are then linked to cases of corporate offending (accounting fraud, bribery, environmental and anti-competitive) for 3,327 US based companies between 1996 and 2013.

Analyses-NIJ-5.21.2019--2-.do: Syntax (Stata) used to create type of offense count; domain of processing (civil, criminal, regulatory); offense distribution (by corporate year), female board membership (count and percent); Reoffending (by enforcement type and governance characteristics).

The Latin American Public Opinion Project (LAPOP) is an academic institution hosted by Vanderbilt University that began with the study of democratic values in Costa Rica, but today carries out surveys in much of Latin America, Canada, the United States, and the Caribbean. In 2004, LAPOP established the AmericasBarometer as multi-country, regularly conducted survey of democratic values and behaviors in the Americas, and the first round included voting-age respondents from 11 countries. The 2014 round, which marks the latest round of surveys of the AmericasBarometer, includes surveys conducted in 28 countries across the Americas and more than 50,000 interviews.

LAPOP collected opinions on major problems facing the country and community, threats to security, attitudes towards the country's political system, and trust in government institutions. Also measured were respondents' participation in community organizations, attitudes towards government critics, voting behavior, confidence in local government, and the prevalence of crime. Values, Institutional Quality, and Development in Portugal, 2012-2013 (ICPSR 36289)

Released/updated on: 2016-03-28
Geographic coverage: Portugal, Global
Time period: 2012-01-01--2013-12-31
The purpose of this study was to arrive at an authoritative and nuanced assessment of the functioning and quality of Portuguese institutions through an intensive analysis of organizations and agencies deemed emblematic of the nation's institutional framework. The study selected a sample of organizations of national scope, public and private, that are both intrinsically important and capable of casting light on the character on the broader national institutional universe. Investigators were asked not only to provide historical background and detailed analysis of the internal structure and modes of operation of each organization, but to rank them in a series of strategic dimensions of institutional quality drawn from previous theoretical literature in Economics and Sociology. These topics included meritocracy, proactivity, immunity to corruption, technological flexibility, and fairness. The organizations included in this study are: the Energy Corporation (Energias de Portugal - EDP), the Food and Economic Security Authority (Autoridade de Segurança Alimentar e Económica - ASAE), the Postal System (Correios de Portugal - CTT), the Public Health System (Serviço Nacional de Saúde - SNS; Hospital de Santa Maria), and the Stock Exchange (New York Stock Exchange - Euronext Lisbon - LSE), and the Tax Authority (Autoridade Tributária - AT). Surveys were conducted with personnel of the selected organizations to gauge their general value orientations as well as their attitudes toward the organization itself. Questionnaires were answered anonymously and with full guarantees of confidentiality. Surveys were completed with personnel of five of the six institutions selected for the project; the Tax Authority did not participate. Demographic variables include age, sex, gender, education, occupation, and length of employment.

Mexico Panel Study, 2012 (ICPSR 35024)

Released/updated on: 2016-03-11
Geographic coverage: Mexico
Time period: 2012-03-01--2012-07-31
The Mexico 2012 Panel Study is a two-wave, major survey research project on Mexico's 2012 general election campaign with a focus on vote buying and the impact of crime and violence on vote choices. It is roughly comparable in scope to the American National Election Studies and the British Elections Studies. Similar to the Mexico 2000 and Mexico 2006 Panel Studies, it is intended to be a resource for scholars working on campaigns, public opinion, voting behavior, and political communication, whether they focus on Mexico or not. The 2012 Panel Study examines democratic consolidation in Mexico through the lens of electoral politics and documents how the mass public, the candidates, the political parties, and the media interact to shape the subjects of electoral contests - taking into account the possibility that political elites may anticipate the preferences of ordinary citizens and of other elites. The goal of the study was to understand why electoral campaigns highlight or downplay certain issues, and to assess the implications of these dynamics for democratic governance. Some of the questions in this study include "Who sets the agenda in Mexican elections?", "To what extent does this agenda respond to, engage, or ignore ordinary citizens?", and "What do the dynamics of 'issue emergence' mean for democratic representation?". Demographic variables include, age, sex, civil/marital status, education, income, occupation, social class, and religion.
