The Arab Barometer is a multicountry social survey designed to assess citizen attitudes about public affairs, governance, and social policy in the Arab world, and to identify factors that shape these attitudes and values. In this third wave of the Arab Barometer, respondents in the countries of Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Sudan, Tunisia, and Yemen were queried regarding (1) general questions, (2) evaluation of political institutions and political attitudes, (3) elections and parliament, (4) the media, (5) democracy, (6) social, religious and cultural topics, (7) the Arab world and international relations, and (8) views of the Arab uprisings. In regards to general questions, respondents were asked to give their opinion on the current overall and future economic condition of their countries, the current economic situation of their families, the safety of their locality, and levels of interpersonal trust. On the topic of evaluation of political institutions, political participation, and political attitudes, respondents gave their opinions on how much trust they had in political institutions such as political parties, police, parliament, the courts, and the prime minister. Further, participants were asked about the ease of obtaining services from the government, the present political situation, the performance of their country's current government, problems facing their country, citizen freedoms, corruption and the use of "wasta" (personal influence or connections). Concerning elections and parliament, questions focused on electoral participation, the fairness of elections, and important qualities in a candidate for office. On the subject of the media, questions included the respondent's main source of political information, media bias, media censorship, and use of the Internet. Concerning democracy, respondents were asked questions about their opinions on political competition and reform, participation in political dissent, their opinions on the characteristics of democracy, their opinions about various political system, the degree to which, on a given list of countries, each is a democracy, and how suitable democracy is for the respondents' respective countries. Regarding social, religious and cultural topics, respondents gave their views on the lottery, choosing a spouse, the interpretation of Islam in present-day issues, and the behavior and situation of women in Muslim society. Additional queries included the degree to which religion should influence voting in elections, government decisions, and legislation. Regarding the Arab world and international affairs, questions were asked about views toward globalization and trade, security relationships with other countries, and the Arab-Israeli conflict. Finally, respondents were asked about their participation in and views of the events associated with the Arab uprisings. Demographic variables include age, gender, education, income, employment status, occupation, marital status, and religious preference and practices.

In regards to economic questions, respondents were asked to give their opinion on the current overall and future economic condition of their countries, and the current economic situation of their families. On the topic of evaluation of political institutions, political participation, and political attitudes, respondents gave their opinions on how much trust they had in political institutions such as political parties, police, parliament, the courts, and the prime minister, their involvement in organizations, whether people can be trusted, city safety, election participation, and the fairness of elections. Further, participants were asked about the ease of obtaining services from the government, the present political situation, their political interest and main source of political information, and their support of the government. Other questions asked their opinions on political competition and reform, participation in political dissent, their opinions on the characteristics of democracy, the degree to which, on a given list of countries, each is a democracy, and how suitable democracy is for the respondents' respective countries. The remaining questions asked respondents for their opinions of various political systems, the performance of their country's current government, problems facing their country, citizen freedoms, corruption, and qualifications for national leadership. Concerning identity and nationalism, respondents were asked how they view themselves, what affiliations were most important, which groups they wished to have as neighbors, what they thought of emigration, and pride in their country. On the subject of politics and religion, queries included the degree to which religion should influence voting in elections, government decisions, and legislation. Regarding religiosity, respondents gave their views on the lottery, choosing a spouse, the interpretation of Islam in present-day issues, the behavior and situation of women in Muslim society, and a person's qualifications for a government job. The final topic, the Arab world and international affairs, questions were asked about the Arab world lagging behind other regions, the effectiveness of the Arab League, whether certain events were part of terrorist operations, the United States' role in the Middle East, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Changing Climates of Conflict: A Social Network Experiment in 56 Schools, New Jersey, 2012-2013 (ICPSR 37070)

The data in this collection are social network data drawn from a large-scale field experiment. Theories of human behavior suggest that individuals attend to the behavior of certain people in their community to understand what is socially normative and adjust their own behavior in response. This experiment tested these theories by randomizing an anti-conflict intervention across 56 New Jersey public middle schools, with 24,191 students. After having comprehensively measured every school's social network, randomly selected seed groups of 20-32 students from randomly selected schools were assigned to an intervention that encouraged public stances against conflict at school. The data allowed for comparisons between treatment and control groups, and also provided variables to analyze social networks to examine the impact of social referents.

Surveys were conducted at the start and end of the 2012-2013 school year, the year in which the experiment was conducted. The survey data contains social network variables based on the peers with whom the respondent chooses to spend time. Survey data also include respondents' perceived descriptive and prescriptive norms of conflict at the schools surveyed, as well as administrative data on the schools and demographics of respondents.

The collection includes one dataset, with 482 variables for 24,471 cases. Demographic variables in the collection include gender, grade, age, height, weight, race/ethnicity, language, household characteristics, and demographic variables obtained from school administrative records.

Conflict Management by International Organizations, 1945-1970 (ICPSR 5303)

This study contains data on 146 disputes in different geographical regions of the world that were managed by international or regional organizations in the period 1945-1970. Part of the project on Studies in International Integration of the Institute of International Studies at the University of California (Berkeley), this study was aimed at addressing how much difference international organizations have made in the management of international conflicts. Data are provided for conflicts brought before at least one of the following organizations whose primary concern was conflict management among members: United Nations, Organization of American States, Organization of African Unity, Arab League, and the Council of Europe. For each dispute, data are provided for the name of the conflict, issues at stake, power status of the parties involved, responses of the international organizations involved in managing the dispute, interstate nature of the dispute, duration of hostilities, civil and military fatalities, likelihood of the dispute abating, disappearing, or escalating if the disputing parties were left to themselves by the international organizations, and the likelihood that the United States and the Soviet Union would engage in a major war over the dispute, involving the use of nuclear weapons or massive conventional weapons on several fronts. A summary scale was developed by the investigators to measure the intensity levels of each dispute, and to score the successes of organizational management of the dispute.

The Militarized Interstate Dispute (MID) (v3.10) data, compiled by the Correlates of War Project, provides information about conflicts in which one or more states threaten, display, or use force against one or more other states between 1816 and 2001. Five datasets are included with this collection. The first dataset comprises essential attributes of each militarized interstate dispute from January 1, 1816, through December 31, 2001, while the second dataset includes participants in each of these disputes. The third dataset comprises essential elements of each militarized interstate incident from January 1, 1993, through December 31, 2001, including incidents that belong to disputes that began in 1992 and continued into 1993, while the fourth dataset includes participants in each of these incidents. The fifth dataset contains dyadic militarized interstate disputes, of which each dyadic MID has exactly two states involved, on opposite sides of the MID. Generated from the incident-level data, these data are from the years 1993 through 2001, and additionally are provided for MIDs that were ongoing as of December 31, 1992.

Children exposed to domestic violence are at increased risk of experiencing and perpetrating violence against their partners when they become adolescents and adults. Despite this increased risk and the fact that approximately 15 million children are exposed to domestic violence yearly, there have been no evaluated dating abuse prevention programs conducted specifically with this population.

The collection contains 2 SAS data files: baseline_final.sas (n=51; 465 variables) and followup_final.sas (n=32; 463 variables).

Detroit Area Study, 1967: Citizens in Search of Justice (ICPSR 7406)

This study of 780 adults in the Detroit metropolitan area provides information on their experiences with conflict situations and the ways in which they resolved them. Respondents' reactions to some actual events were probed, including problems involving neighbors, landlords, and government agencies, as well as situations of discrimination, and failure to receive entitlements due from insurance companies and government agencies. For each problematic area, respondents were asked to indicate how the conflict was resolved. Also explored were respondents' perceptions of and interactions with lawyers and their views on what could be done if an unfair law or decision were passed. Additional items probed respondents' views of Detroit, their neighborhood, the legal system, and the police. Demographic variables specify age, race, gender, education, marital status, place of birth, nationality, occupation, number of children, religion, home ownership, family income, and length of residence in the Detroit area.

Dyadic Disputes, 1920-1968 (ICPSR 5401)

This study is an exploration of 121 dyadic disputes that occurred among 71 nations in the period 1920-1968 and were considered in at least one of four major international institutions: the Permanent Court of International Justice (PCIJ), the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the League of Nations, and the United Nations (UN). The data were collected to provide systematic and comparative analyses of these four international institutions in the international bargaining process. The two basic units of analysis used in this study are participants (nations) and cases. The participants data are further divided into national attributes of participants and patterns of institutional usage by participants. The case-unit data are divided into case attributes and attributes of the dyadic relationship between the two participants in each case. The Attributes of Participants File (Part 1) contains information on the date of each nation's independence, date when the case was introduced to the institution and how the case was introduced, date when the nation's current regime came to power, type of political systems, stage of nation's economic development, socio-cultural regions, geographical regions, and the degree of the nation's institutional usage. The Participant Usage File (Part 2) includes data on the total number of cases in which the nation participated, jointly submitted the dispute, or was the applicant, and each nation's total weighted index of participation in the four major international institutions. The Dyadic Relationships File (Part 3) includes data on the types of issues involved in each case, hostilities associated with the case, institutions credited with stopping hostilities, collective mediation and conciliation, truce enforcement, relative power capabilities of the disputants, and military and geographical distance between disputants, as well as comparisons of economic stages of development, socio-cultural and geographical regions, and institutional usages between the disputants.

Early Years of Marriage (EYM) Project, Years 1-4, 1986-1989 (ICPSR 4557)

The purpose of the Early Years of Marriage (EYM) Project was to determine ways in which the early development of marriage for Black couples and White couples affect the mental and physical health of spouses, marital stability, long-term marital outcomes, patterns of family life and, for those who divorce, individual adjustment to family disruption. The EYM Project began in 1986 with 373 newlywed couples--174 White couples and 199 Black couples. The marriages were all intra-racial and it was the first marriage for both spouses.

Year 1 interviews, which queried the couples on various aspects of married life, began after four to nine months into the marriage. Very few respondents who originally participated in Year 1 of the study refused to participate in subsequent phases of the study. In 1986 (Year 1) and 1988 (Year 3) spouses were interviewed in their homes separately and together, with the interviews conducted by interviewers of the same race. In 1987 (Year 2) and 1989 (Year 4) shorter individual telephone interviews were conducted.

In all four years, respondents were queried on a wide variety of topics such as feelings and perceptions of their own family, spouse, in-laws, and their spouse's friends, family planning, how many children they should have, how the children should be reared, childcare, and household roles and responsibilities. A series of questions was asked about reasons for getting married, how satisfying married life was, what, if any, were the special pleasures and good feelings that came from being married, how often arguments and disagreements occurred, main reasons for arguments, and how they were eventually resolved. A series of questions were also asked regarding the mental and physical health of the spouse, job satisfaction, job security, and how the job affected the family. In Year 2 and Year 4 interviews (Parts 2-4), a series of questions regarding separation and divorce were also asked.

Demographic variables include race, gender, age, level of education, occupation, income, and religious preference.

This round of Eurobarometer surveys diverged from the standard Eurobarometer measures and queried respondents on the following major areas of focus: (1) discrimination, (2) radioactive waste, and (3) purchasing in the European Union (EU). For the first major focus, discrimination, respondents were queried about how widespread various types of discrimination were, how common they were compared with five years ago, if in the past year they had personally felt discriminated against or witnessed discrimination, and the existence of multiple discrimination. Additional queries included how comfortable respondents would be with having a person from a different minority group as a neighbor, what criteria would put an employment candidate at a disadvantage, their feelings about having people from different minority groups holding the highest elected political position in their country, opinions about specific measures for equal opportunity in employment, whether enough effort was made to fight discrimination, and if they would know their rights if a victim of discrimination. For the second major focus, radioactive waste, respondents were asked how informed they felt about radioactive waste, their opinions about nuclear energy, its management and the advantages of its use, and their opinions about radioactive waste and its disposal. Further queries asked respondents whom they trusted to give them information about radioactive waste management, their reactions to a radioactive waste site being built near their home, and their opinions about the management and monitoring practices of radioactive waste between EU member states and the EU. For the third major focus, purchasing in the European Union, respondents were queried about whether they had purchased or tried to purchase goods/services in the last 12 months, in their own and in another EU country, the total value of purchases, and whether they had offers from sellers in other EU countries. Queries also asked if respondents experienced unsolicited, deceptive, or fraudulent offers, coercion, unfair contract terms, shopping at a distance, the cooling-off period, making complaints, and their interest and confidence in cross-border shopping in comparison to shopping in their own country. Finally, on the same topic, respondents were asked about their use of price comparison Web sites, the protection of consumers and the process for resolving disputes, financial services, holiday packages, and nonfood purchases. Demographic and other background information includes age, gender, nationality, origin of birth (personal and parental), marital status, left-right political self-placement, occupation, age when stopped full-time education, household composition, religious affiliation, ownership of a fixed or a mobile telephone and other durable goods, social contacts, minority group affiliation, quality of life pertaining to health, type and size of locality, region of residence, and language of interview (in select countries).

Evaluation of Violence Prevention Programs in Four New York City Middle Schools, 1993-1994 (ICPSR 2704)

This research project sought to evaluate the impact of broad-based multifaceted violence prevention programs versus programs that have a more limited focus. Two specific programs were evaluated in four New York City middle schools. The more limited program used Project S.T.O.P.(Students Teaching Options for Peace), a conflict resolution and peer mediation training program. The full multi-faceted program combined Project S.T.O.P. with Safe Harbor, a program that provided victimization counseling and taught violence prevention. The effects of this combined program, offered in three of the middle schools, were compared to those of just the Project S.T.O.P. program alone in one middle school. To study the program models, researchers used a quasi-experimental pre-post design, with nonequivalent comparison groups. Questionnaires were given to students to assess the impact of the two programs. Students were asked about their knowledge and use of prevention programs in their schools. Data were also collected on students' history of victimization, such as whether they were ever attacked at school, stolen from, mugged, or threatened with a weapon. Students were also asked about their attitudes toward verbal abuse, victims of violence, and conditions when revenge is acceptable, and their exposure to violence, including whether they knew anyone who was sexually abused, beaten, or attacked because of race, gender, or sexual orientation. Additional questions covered students' use of aggressive behaviors, such as whether they had threatened someone with a weapon or had beaten, slapped, hit, or kicked someone. Data were also gathered on the accessibility of alcohol, various drugs, weapons, and stolen property. Demographic variables include students' school grade, class, sex, number of brothers and sisters, and household composition.

Global Views 2008: American Public Opinion and Foreign Policy (ICPSR 26301)

This study is part of a quadrennial series designed to investigate the opinions and attitudes of the general public on matters related to foreign policy, and to define the parameters of public opinion within which decision-makers must operate. This public opinion study of the United States focused on respondents' opinions of the United States leadership role in the world and the challenges the country faces internationally and is comprised of two parts, the July 2008 and the September 2008 surveys. In particular, the July 2008 survey covers United States foreign policy, globalization, trade and immigration, the rise of China, and the United States-Japan relationship. Regarding United States foreign policy, respondents were asked to give their views on whether the United States should take an active part in world affairs, threats to vital interests in the next ten years, foreign policy goals, treaties and agreements, the United Nations and the United Nations Security Council, conflict between Christians and Muslims, and combating terrorism. Additional questions included whether respondents favored the United States having military bases in other countries, their opinions about justifications for the use of United States troops abroad, the Iraq War, nuclear weapons and nuclear fuel, and participants' views on several countries and world organizations. Regarding globalization, trade, and immigration, respondents gave their opinions on whether globalization is good or bad for the United States, lowering trade barriers, the trade practices of various countries, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), economic competitiveness of the United States economy, and the future of United States power and the next generation of Americans. In addition, on the topic of globalization and immigration, queries included the importance of Asia and Europe, the pace of globalization, fairness of income distribution, foreign investments in American companies, the level of legal immigration into the United States and whether or not immigration is good. Concerning the rise of China, respondents were asked to compare the size and potential of the United States and China economies and their implications, loans between the countries, how to deal with China's increase in power, and whether China or Japan is more important to the United States. On the subject of the United States-Japan relationship, participants gave their opinions regarding the amending of Japan's constitution to allow for a wider range of military activities, Japan's development of nuclear weapons, and what factors contribute to Japan's global influence. Part 2, the September 2008 survey, commissioned to gauge whether any substantial changes in attitudes occurred due to the financial crisis, repeated a subset of questions from the July 2008 survey and focused on respondents' attitudes toward trade and globalization. Demographic and other background information includes age, race, gender, marital status, religious affiliation, political party affiliation, employment status, education, household composition, type of housing, state of residence, and access to the Internet.

Domestic issues included economic prospects for American children when they become adults, funding for government programs, the fairness of the current distribution of income in the United States, the role of government, whether the government can be trusted to do what is right, climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, United States' dependence on foreign energy sources, drilling for oil and natural gas off the coast of the United States, and relations with Mexico including such issues as the ongoing drug war, as well as immigration and immigration reform. Demographic and other background information included age, gender, race/ethnicity, marital status, left-right political self-placement, political affiliation, employment status, highest level of education, and religious preference. The dynamics of international conflict events are outlined in this collection, with a focus on sequences of events and the roles played by conflict management agents. Each conflict episode is divided into a number of phases--each designating a level of conflict--with a separate record for each phase of each case. The possible levels of conflict range from a quarrel or disagreement claimed by one party to be of international significance (phase 1: dispute) to military action (phase 3: hostilities) to a resolution of the conflict (phase 6: settlement). Also emphasized are referrals by conflict actors, i.e., initiatives to bring a case to the attention of a potential conflict manager. The collection is divided into five datasets: (1) a case overview, providing for each case such data as the number of phases and referrals, the presence of management agents, and probable outcome had there been no manager, (2) phase-specific information, including for each phase data on dates, interests at stake, actions taken, alliances, and extent of damages, (3) referral data, including agents involved and support for or opposition to each initiative, (4) data on conflict management agents, detailing the identity, degree of bias, and primary role of each agent, and (5) management agent actions, listing the types of action taken by each agent.

This dataset contains four data files on 3,329 international terrorist attacks from 1968 through 1977. Part 1, Common File, includes information on the type of attack, the location of the beginning and end of the incident, the name of the terrorist group involved, and the numbers of deaths and injuries. Parts 2 and 3, Hostage and Fate Files, provide more detailed information on the characteristics and fates of both the hostages and the terrorists. This study was designed to determine the nature, incidence, and coincidence of forms of interpersonal conflict and resulting conflict management styles, including physical violence, in an existing nationally-representative cohort of 18 to 32 year old adults between the years 2016 to 2018. Respondent reports of conflicts involving aggressive and violent behavior were distinguished for three relationship categories: intimate partner relationships, friends/acquaintances, and relatively unknown persons/strangers.

The research design covered questions about the nature and frequency of conflicts experienced irrespective of whether the incidents ended violently; conflict management style/tendencies (remedial actions, apologies, accounts); and differences between conflicts that turn violent and those that do not. Additional questions covered include the frequency of violence during the course of disputes, including experiences with physical victimization and the perpetration of violent acts was assessed.

Also elements that facilitate conflict escalation that are deemed important theoretical constructs in research on aggression, such as adverse childhood events, low self-control, negative affect, street code attitudes, routine activities/lifestyles, agreeableness, and alcohol and drug use, in addition to demographic and other person-level variables were investigated.

This data collection contains information about 310 cases of interstate conflict that had a political-security focus and occurred between 1945 and 1974. Each case represents a conflict management problem associated with particular conflicts. Cases are characterized in terms of the goals of the parties and management agents as perceived by the international community at the time of the conflict. Thus, a case may not correspond directly to a conflict. (One case may represent several different conflicts and a conflict may result in several cases.) For each conflict management problem, data exists that identifies the core case and describes conflict characteristics (e.g., type of issue, number of fatalities, duration, and likelihood of abatement if no management agents became involved), management influence (e.g., specific agents -- including a range of 45 specific organizations and governments, agent's bias, and agent's previous involvement), and management action (e.g., at what phase of conflict the agent became involved, phase of strongest action, and technique of management action).

In 1997, Louisiana enacted a covenant marriage law which gave couples an alternative to a conventional marriage license. By requiring premarital counseling and proof of fault for a subsequent divorce, along with other features, covenant marriages were intended to be more difficult both to enter and to exit. The Marriage Matters panel survey was designed to examine the effects of covenant marriage on rates of marital dissolution, relationship quality, and other outcomes. The data were collected in three waves. Wave 1 was collected approximately 3 to 6 months after marriage. Respondents were asked questions about their recent marriage, the time leading up to their recent marriage, premarital counseling, convenant marriage, previous marriages, biological and adopted children, feelings about children, their views on marriage and divorce in general, their religious views, satisfaction in marriage, household responsibilities, their background, health and happiness, their social and political views, and about the questionnaire itself. Wave 2 was administered approximately 18 months after the first wave. The second wave queried respondents on their marriage today, their views on marriage and divorce in general, their religious views, household responsibilities, satisfaction in marriage, convenant marriage, biological and adopted children, feelings about children, problems in their marriage, advice and counseling, their health and happiness, employment, housing, and income, household composition, and their social and political views. Wave 3 was administered 12 to 24 months after the second wave. Respondents answered questions on their marriage today, views about marriage and divorce in general, their religious views, household responsibilities, satisfaction in marriage, the celebration of holidays, convenant marriage, biological and adopted children, feelings about children, problems in their marriage, advice and counseling, their health and happiness, employment, housing, and income, household composition, and their social and political views. In the divorce questionnaire, the following topics were addressed: how things stand at the moment, feelings about their marriage, arguments during their marriage, social life since the separation or divorce, their health and well-being, moving to a divorce agreement, advice and counseling, the divorce process and convenant marriage, and household income the year before and after the separation. Demographic information collected across all three waves includes: age, gender, religious participation, employment status, education level, number of children birthed or adopted, household composition, and household income. Demographic information collected in Wave 1 only includes: race, religious affiliation, number of previous marriages, and political affiliation. Demographic information collected through the divorce questionnaire includes: gender, marital status, and personal and partner income.

Nonbinding Suggestions and Dispute Rates: Uncertainty, Focal Points, and their Effects on Bargaining Outcomes (ICPSR 25323)

This paper focuses on the effects of nonbinding recommendations on bargaining outcomes. Recommendations are theorized to have two effects: they can create a focal point for final bargaining positions, and they can decrease outcome uncertainty should dispute persist. While the focal point effect may help lower dispute rates, the uncertainty reduction effect is predicted to do the opposite for risk-averse bargainers. Which of these effects dominates is of critical importance in the optimal design of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) procedures, which are becoming increasingly utilized to help resolve disputes in a variety of settings. We theoretically examine the effects of recommendations on the bargaining contract zone. Our theoretical framework, which allows bargainers' final positions to influence a binding outcome should negotiations fail, provides for a more stringent test of focal points than previously considered. We also present data from controlled laboratory bargaining experiments that are consistent with our model of recommendation effects. Recommendations are empirically shown to influence final bargaining positions and negotiated settlement values. Furthermore, dispute rates are significantly lower when one includes recommendations, even where the recommendation is completely ignored in final-stage arbitration. This highlights a potentially significant role for the use of nonbinding procedures, such as mediation, as a preliminary stage in developing more efficient ADR procedures.

One of these measures was the Family Environment Scale (FES). The FES was designed to assess the interpersonal relationships and the overall social environment within the family. The FES captures the perception of the family's functioning from one of its own members. In the case of the PHDCN Longitudinal Cohort Study, the respondents who completed the FES were the primary caregivers for cohorts 0-15 and the subjects composing cohort 18. The FES specifically sought to quantify three dimensions of the family environment: interpersonal relationships, directions of personal growth, and basic organization and structure. In addition to acting as a self-report measuring the family environment, the FES was also used as an instrument to observe the effect of the family environment on the individual subjects. Three scales (Conflict, Control, and Moral-Religious Emphasis) from the Family Environment Scale were used in this questionnaire to further evaluate the functioning of the family.

The SHERFACS data collection measures political conflict from 1937 through 1985 and identifies some 700 international disputes and 1,000 domestic quarrels. SHERFACS is the culmination of a long line of quantitative studies of international conflict management (the name SHERFACS derives from the name of the principal investigator, Sherman, and the initials of the collaborators on a predecessor dataset: Farris, Alker, Carley, and Sherman). Beginning with the work of Ernst Haas, efforts have been made to expand the focus of conflict management studies to a larger set of management agents and issues. SHERFACS has expanded the study of conflict management in highly significant ways: it models the internal conflict dynamics of escalation and de-escalation (Part 1, Case Overview Data, and Part 2, Phase Structure Data), identifies specific categories of actor behavior (Part 3, Party Actions Within Phases Data), relates the referral or agenda processes of conflict management agents (Part 4, Referrals to Management Agents Data), and specifies the actions taken by the management agents (Part 5, Management Agent Actions Data). An important addition is the inclusion of conflicts that have been considered to be essentially domestic in origin. SHERFACS provides an attempt to enfold the micro-measurement of traditional events datasets within a framework that is contextually sensitive to narrative presentation. The SHERFACS project updates and expands an earlier data collection effort, INTERNATIONAL CONFLICT EPISODES, 1945-1979 (ICPSR 8303).

The South Korean General Election Panel Study 2008 examined vote determinants of Korean voters and the causes and dynamics of changes in voter preferences. The survey was conducted from March to April 2008 in two waves with a large-scale panel of 3,503 representing the nation's gender, age, region, and education proportions. The study analyzed factors that influence the formation and change of voter preferences through three broad theoretical frameworks: (1) The sociological model that explains voter preference as a reflection of major social fragmentation (education, gender, income, religion, region, etc.); (2) The psychological model of the Michigan School that explains voter preference formation and change as activation of party identification in United States or Western elections, and regional identification in Korea as a proxy; (3) The rational voter model that posits that individuals, after calculating their own interests, support candidates or parties that possess the policies and ideology to maximize those interests. The South Korean Election Panel studies utilize "tracking core questions": questions that repeatedly track the change in vote determinants. These questions focus on attitudes of candidate factors, political party factors, election campaigns, issues, and policies. In this study, respondents were asked about: their voting behavior, party preferences, exposure to different media sources, the economy, various politicians, opinions about the election, opinions about President Lee Myung-bak and his administration, and the general election. Demographic information includes age, gender, religion, education level, occupation, hometown, homeownership type, and family income.

The study analyzed factors that influence the formation and change of voter preferences through three broad theoretical frameworks: (1) The sociological model that explains voter preference as a reflection of major social fragmentation (education, gender, income, religion, region, etc.); (2) The psychological model of the Michigan School that explains voter preference formation and change as activation of party identification in United States or Western elections, and regional identification in Korea as a proxy; (3) The rational voter model that posits that individuals, after calculating their own interests, support candidates or parties that possess the policies and ideology to maximize those interests. The South Korean Election Panel studies utilize "tracking core questions": questions that repeatedly track the change in vote determinants. These questions focus on attitudes of candidate factors, political party factors, election campaigns, issues, and policies. In this study, respondents were asked about the local election, their voting behavior, attitudes about political parties, which candidate they voted for in the 2006, 2007, and 2008 elections, exposure to media, major issues in the country, and the Lee Myung-bak administration. Economic questions asked about the living conditions of the respondent's residing city, how this compared to other cities, the respondent's household condition, and the economic situation of the country. Questions were also asked about the performance of President Lee Myung-bak and the respondent's local Governor/Mayor. Demographic variables include gender, age, occupation, religion, level of education, perceived social class, home ownership, and income.

The South Korean Local Election Panel Study of 2010 examined vote determinants of Korean voters and the causes and dynamics of changes in voter preferences. This study presents the results of five regions in South Korea: Chungnam, Gyeonggi, Gyeongnam, Jeonbuk, and Seoul. The survey was conducted in three waves from May to June 2010 with a large-scale panel of 600 respondents who represented the five regions' gender, age, and education proportions. Survey of Households in Five Judicial Districts of the United States: A Civil Litigation Project, 1977-1979 (ICPSR 9743)

This data collection is based on the household screening survey conducted by the Civil Litigation Research Project (CLRP) in 1980. The survey was conducted in five federal judicial districts in the United States: Eastern Wisconsin, Eastern Pennsylvania, South Carolina, New Mexico, and Central California. The primary objective of the study was to identify individuals involved in disputes that might have become lawsuits. The major area of investigation was claiming behavior. The dataset also includes 54 households from the "screened experiment," whereby households known to have been involved in lawsuits were contacted. Demographic variables include the age, sex, education, occupation, and union status of the chief wage earner. Also included are the respondent's sex, race, and family income. Questions were asked about consumer problems, problems with persons who owed the respondent money, discrimination problems, debt problems, property-related problems, mortgage-related problems, landlord-tenant problems, problems with government benefits, and post-divorce problems. The unit of analysis is the household.

Survey of Judges on the Role of Courts in American Society, 1979 (ICPSR 7824)

This survey was conducted in order to obtain from judges their views and experiences regarding the role of courts in American society, specifically on issues of caseload management. From a sample representing five regions of the country, 104 federal and state judges were interviewed about their general work practices and performance in court over the year previous to August 1979. Variables describe the amount of time judges spent on routine judicial activities, characteristics of cases requiring excessive time, the mechanisms employed in the resolution of civil disputes, techniques for reducing or more expeditiously handling heavy caseloads, and suggestions for extra-judicial dispute settlement processes that could serve as alternatives to courts. Data are also available on each judge's legal education, legal experience, and personal background.

This study is a content analysis of 1,243 speeches on the Middle East situation in the United Nations General Assembly among 87 member nations of the United Nations in the period 1953-1965. The speeches are coded for overall tone, attitudes toward the West, Arabs, and Israel, charges of aggression against the United States, Israel, Arab nations, Britain, and France, Israeli and Arab military preparedness, charges of recurrent attacks by one party in the Middle East disputes on the other, faith in the United Nations' effectiveness to solve the problems, value of United Nations debates, violation of international agreements by either the Israelis or the Arabs, causes of conflict in the Middle East, failure to submit conflict to international agencies, Zionism, religious differences, Soviet intentions in the Middle East, statements on the recognition of Israeli statehood, use of preventive war or force, rationality of positions, Israeli expansionist plans, Israeli denial of freedom and independence to the Arabs, and interference with rights of sovereign states. Additional variables are coded for the Egyptian seizure of the Suez Canal, right of free passage, conspiracy, Israeli and Arab refusals to comply with international obligations, reactions to domestic and world public opinion, economic motives behind aggressions, violation of law by use of force, intra-Arab disputes, problem of Palestinian refugees, use of international force, possibility of world war, safety of holy places, Israeli and Arab refusals to comply with United Nations resolutions, and Israeli and Arab attitudes toward international law.
