Attention Fragmentation in Digital Learning Environments: Micro-Procrastination, Cognitive Load, and Deep Work Across Educational Levels (ICPSR 251454)

AbstractMaintaining sustained attention has become increasingly challenging in digitally saturated learning environments, where frequent notifications and habitual task switching are normalized. Although digital distraction has been widely examined, limited research has focused on digital micro-procrastination—brief, repetitive digital interruptions—and its cognitive consequences across educational levels. This study examined the relationships among Digital Micro-Procrastination (DMP), Perceived Cognitive Load (PCL), and Deep Work (DW) among junior high school, senior high school, and college students. Using a quantitative descriptive-comparative design, survey data were collected from 45 students equally distributed across three academic levels. All measures demonstrated acceptable internal consistency following reliability refinement. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Spearman’s rank-order correlation, and Kruskal–Wallis tests. Results revealed a significant positive association between digital micro-procrastination and perceived cognitive load, indicating that frequent short digital interruptions are linked to heightened mental strain and attention fragmentation. Significant cross-level differences were observed, with college students reporting the highest levels of digital micro-procrastination and cognitive load. Findings related to deep work suggest a more nuanced relationship, wherein sustained focus may coexist with elevated cognitive effort rather than reduced task demands. Overall, the study underscores the cognitive implications of everyday digital practices and highlights the need for instructional and self-regulatory strategies that mitigate attention fragmentation in contemporary educational contexts.

ECIN Replication Package for Institution or Major? Understanding Student Preferences in College Admissions (ICPSR 247362)

In many countries outside the United States, students must choose an institution–major pair simultaneously, creating a trade-off between institutional prestige and field of study. Using data from Taiwan's centralized admissions system, we study how applicants navigate this choice. We find that students strongly prioritize institutional ranking, with little heterogeneity across demographic groups and only a weak link between program choice and expected earnings. Counterfactual analysis shows that students forgo about 15% of their annual income by favoring institutions over earnings-maximizing alternatives, suggesting that nonpecuniary factors—especially institutional reputation—play a central role in shaping college decisions.

This study provides data about the experiences of students at community colleges that participated in the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) Freshman Survey between 1995 and 2007. Since 1966, the CIRP Freshman Survey has provided data on incoming college students' background characteristics, high school experiences, attitudes, behaviors, and expectations for college. The survey resides at the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) at the University of California-Los Angeles. Information about the history and administration of the Freshman Survey can be found on the HERI website.

Community colleges in this study were identified using Carnegie Classifications. The data include responses from 95,646 students at 106 institutions. Additional Freshman Survey data are available as studies in the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) Series.

This is required since that is only place the application system exists.The Higher Education Randomized Controlled Trial (THE-RCT) study aims to capitalize on existing data from postsecondary education RCTs to foster substantive and methodological scholarship and encourage teaching and learning opportunities. The cornerstone of THE-RCT is a restricted access file (RAF). This version contains individual-participant data from more than 30 of MDRC's higher education RCTs covering over 50 institutions and over 50,000 students. The data were originally collected as part of different randomized controlled trial evaluations of a variety of higher education interventions. The data were collected for different student samples, at different times, and in different locations for each study.The data were collected from four data sources:
  1. Baseline: Baseline student demographic data (e.g., gender, race/ethnicity, age, etc.) were gathered, either via a survey administered to students upon joining the study (but prior to random assignment) or from study colleges' administrative records;
  2. College Transcript: Student transcript data (e.g., enrollment, credits attempted, credits earned, GPA) were provided by the study colleges or state higher education agencies;
  3. College Credential Attainment: Student credential attainment data were provided by the study colleges or state higher education agencies;
  4. National Student Clearinghouse: Student enrollment and credential attainment data were provided by the National Student Clearinghouse via their StudentTracker database. This includes enrollment and credential attainment data at colleges beyond the colleges where the study took place.
The RAF contains student-level data, including baseline demographics (e.g., gender, race/ethnicity), outcomes (e.g., enrollment, credits earned, credentials), an indicator of experimental group (e.g., program or control group), and study variables (e.g., a variable that allows users to link to the RCT-level database).

Population and Subgroup Differences in the Prevalence and Predictors of Campus Sexual Assault, United States, 2016-2021 (ICPSR 39127)

This secondary data analysis included analyzing pre and post-test intervention data from the Sexual Assault Prevention for Undergraduates (SAPU) online sexual assault prevention education program.

The SAPU data included a large, demographically diverse national sample of college students, allowing for a more in-depth investigation of the prevalence and predictors of sexual assault victimization and perpetration across different types of college campuses. Furthermore, the dataset included contemporaneous measures of unwanted sexual contact victimization and perpetration, dating abuse victimization, and harassment victimization.

The aims for the study included the following:

  • Aim 1: Examine variation in school-level prevalence of sexual assault victimization and perpetration by school type, size, and region from academic years (AY) 2016-2017 to 2019-2020.
  • Aim 2: Assess subgroup differences (by gender identity, sexual orientation, race) in school-level prevalence of sexual assault victimization and perpetration, accounting for school type, size, region.
  • Aim 3: Investigate the relationship between attitudes and perceptions of campus norms and self-reports of sexual assault victimization and perpetration, accounting for precampus sexual assault and individual demographics and school characteristics (type, size, region).
  • Aim 4: Examine variation in the relationship between attitudes and perceptions of campus norms and self-reports of sexual assault victimization and perpetration by subgroups (gender identity, sexual orientation, race), accounting for precampus sexual assault and individual and school characteristics (type, size, region).
  • Aim 5: Examine variation in bystander intentions, efficacy, and behaviors and self-reports of sexual assault victimization and perpetration by subgroups (gender identity, sexual orientation, race), accounting for attitudes, perceptions of campus norms, and precampus sexual assault, as well as individual and school characteristics (type, size, region).

Enhance Diversity Study Faculty Survey, Los Angeles, California, 2017-2022 (ICPSR 39443)

The Enhance Diversity Study (EDS) was part of the longitudinal evaluation of the training and mentoring interventions implemented by institutions receiving grants through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) initiative, BUilding Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD). Interventions, launched in 2015, were designed to understand effective approaches to mentoring, faculty development, student engagement, research capacity building, and infrastructure development at undergraduate institutions.

Study participants were faculty at one of the institutions with a BUILD program, with focus on those in departments broadly related to biomedical research. The cohort was initially created from those who completed the survey in academic year 2016-2017. As faculty participated in BUILD programs, they were added to the study if they had not been in the initial cohort. The sample was refreshed in 2020-2021 to include recently hired faculty. Once participants were enrolled in the study, they were surveyed annually each Spring through 2022.

Surveys focused on elements of academic career trajectories that are relevant to the BUILD interventions. Related to Hallmarks of Success, these reflected psychosocial predictors such as mentor competency and science identity; short and medium-term outcomes included mentoring, research engagement, publications, and pedagogy presentations; and longer-term outcomes such as participation in professional organizations and grant submissions/awards. In 2017 and 2020, EDS used the Faculty Survey administered by the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). For other time points, surveys were developed specifically for the study to include measures important for the evaluation.

In addition to surveys, the data available in this study include information about BUILD program participation by academic term. The BUILD programs were wide-reaching, including professional skill development (mentoring, pedagogy, and research), mentoring opportunities, and pilot and lab grant funding. These data can be used to determine whether survey respondents participated in any BUILD programs and the type and date of such participation.

Finally, summary demographics are provided. Using demographic information across surveys and from institution records, researchers created standardized indicators based on NIH classification of under-represented groups for faculty racial and ethnic, gender, and sexual minority identities.

The Cumulative Financial Costs of Victimization Among College Students at Minority Serving Institutions, 2021-2022 (ICPSR 38929)

The Challenges of Safety and Transitions Study (COSTs) was funded by the National Institutes of Justice (NIJ) to study the costs of victimization amongst a cohort of first-semester college students at minority-serving institutions (MSIs). COSTs consisted of three methodological components: 1) a three-wave prospective, longitudinal survey; 2) official campus enrollment and graduation data; and 3) focus group interviews. Advancing topical knowledge regarding the consequences and costs of victimization was achieved by querying participants about 12 unique types of victimization and a variety of tangible and intangible consequences and costs associated with specific victimization incidents up to one year after victimization.

COSTs participants completed three semi-annual online surveys from the Fall 2021 semester through Fall 2022 (approximately three academic semesters). Incident-based victimization data were collected, and participants were queried about ongoing behavioral, emotional, and financial costs associated with reported victimization incidents for the duration of data collection. Survey data were supplemented in each academic semester by official enrollment and graduation data from the university in which the participant was enrolled at the start of COSTs in order to further assess academic outcomes.

Adaptation and Evaluation of a Video Game to Reduce Sexual Violence on Campus, New Hampshire, 2016 (ICPSR 37101)

Sexual assault is the most common violent crime committed on college campuses today. One in five women have experienced a completed or attempted sexual assault as an undergraduate. In one study, 28% of first-year college women experienced unwanted sexual contact and 7% experienced sexual assault or attempted sexual assault in the first semester of their first year of college, while 7% of college men reported an attempted or completed assault during their college experience. Growing evidence suggests the effectiveness of using online tools and video games for public health intervention and education.

Because of the positive impact of these digital strategies, researchers saw a need to bring this research to sexual violence prevention, where there has been limited use of digital applications. The goal of this project was to design and evaluate the pedagogical effectiveness and cost effectiveness of a video game to reduce sexual and relationship violence. It was hypothesized that the video game could enhance the self-confidence of male and female late adolescents (ages 18-24) to practice safe, appropriate, and effective approaches for intervening in situations where sexual and/or relationship violence (including stalking) is occurring, has the potential to occur, or recently occurred.

Examining the Effect of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Enrollment on Food Insecurity in College Students (ICPSR 219182)

Objectives. This purpose of this research was to determine the prevalence of food insecurity and SNAP enrollment, and the effect of SNAP enrollment on food security students at Middle Tennessee State University. Methods. 402 participants were screened for SNAP eligibility, receipt of SNAP benefits, and level of food security based on the USDA 6-item short form. One-proportion z-scores, binary logistic regression, and univariate ANCOVA were utilized to determine prevalence of food insecurity and SNAP enrollment and the effect of SNAP participation on food security levels. Results. It was estimated that 54.0% of students at MTSU are food insecure. Students surveyed were 71.65% less likely to be receiving SNAP benefits than other eligible Tennessee residents. Students enrolled in SNAP were 45.9% less likely to experience very low food security compared to students that did not receive SNAP benefits, OR = 0.541, 95% CI [0.169, 1.736], p = 0.302. Results also indicated that students enrolled in SNAP had Rasch food security scores that were approximately 11.9% lower than food insecure students that were not enrolled in SNAP, F (1, 190) = 3.391, p = .067. Conclusions. Compared to Tennessee adults, MTSU students were 4.6 times, or 360%, more likely to experience food insecurity, and significantly less likely to be enrolled in the SNAP program. For those that were enrolled, this research has shown that receiving SNAP benefits in college may improve food security.

Student Perceptions of COVID-19 Challenges Affecting Student Motivation, Well-Being, and Success in Undergraduate Education (ICPSR 211905)

Our objectives in this study were to understand the impact of COVID-19 disruptions on the academic and personal experiences of undergraduate students at a state land-grant institution in the Western United States, and to use those insights to identify actionable ways to improve student success.  We used a mixed method survey to assess strategies used by undergraduates to adapt to COVID-19 disruptions.  Results revealed that despite challenges, the majority of students continued toward their academic goals.  Face-to-face classes yielded the greatest student satisfaction, and students reported great dissatisfaction with separation from peers and instructors.  These insights will be especially helpful to educators and administrators in responding to future challenges and planning future approaches.  This overview of students’ attitudes associated with moving from in-person to online coursework may also be useful for advising students considering which of these instructional paradigms to pursue.

Utility Value Intervention Study in Postsecondary Gateway Science Courses, United States, 2017-2021 (ICPSR 39086)

The Utility Value Intervention (UVI) Study in Postsecondary Gateway Science Courses, funded by Institute of Education Sciences (IES) as a large-scale intervention study, aimed to assess the effectiveness of the utility value intervention in enhancing students' academic progress (reflected in course grades) and persistence (continued enrollment in science courses and sustained interest). Specifically, the study sought to determine whether the intervention had the greatest positive impact on first-generation college students (FG), underrepresented minority students (URM), first-generation underrepresented minority students (FG-URM), and students with multiple high-risk identities.

This research was conducted within physics and chemistry courses and implemented as a multi-cohort double-blind randomized controlled trial, involving a total of 7,863 undergraduate participants across six different student cohorts and two science departments. Upon entry into the study, all students were randomly assigned to either the UVI treatment group or a control group. Randomization was stratified based on underrepresented ethnic minority status, first-generation college status, and gender to ensure balanced representation of these subgroups in both treatment and control conditions.

Students remained in their assigned condition throughout the study, even if they enrolled in both physics and chemistry courses. The number of cohorts was determined to ensure an adequate sample size for assessing the intervention's effectiveness across various student subgroups with diverse socio-demographic characteristics. Given the study's implementation within the quarter system, Cohorts 1, 3, and 5 commenced in the fall quarter, while Cohorts 0, 2, and 4 began in the winter quarter.

Admissions, Organization, Culture, and Policy: Understanding the Postsecondary Structures that Shape Women’s Entry into Computing Bachelor’s Programs (ICPSR 208623)

Despite the growing popularity of computing bachelor’s programs, women remain vastly underrepresented in these fields. Using Social Cognitive Career Theory and intersectionality as guiding theories, this qualitative study explores how postsecondary institutions shape women’s experiences choosing and entering computing bachelor’s programs. Twenty-eight of 40 participants entered their institutions with plans to study computing, while 12 developed a new (or renewed) interest in computing as undergraduates. Findings outline four postsecondary structures that shaped participant entry into computing majors, including university-level admissions and participant perceptions of financial and cultural accessibility; academic college-level organization and admissions processes; institutional computing cultures, namely introductory course experiences and social environments; and major declaration policies. Findings also show how these structures differentially shaped participant experiences based on intersecting minoritized social identities, such as race/ethnicity and social class. Overall, findings illustrate the precarious relationship between computing interest development, major intent, and major enrollment for undergraduate women in computing.

How Low Income Expectations Affect Student Loan Repayment Plan Choice: Survey Evidence from College Seniors (ICPSR 186081)

This helps to reduce student loan defaults. Despite universal availability, only a minority of student loan borrowers in the U.S. are in an income-driven repayment plan. I test whether a student’s choice of repayment plan is related to their expectations of earning a low income by fielding a web survey where students are randomly shown one of two types of information about post-college incomes. I use which treatment a student sees as an instrument for their low-income expectations. While the estimates for the full sample are insignificant, I find that increasing low-income expectation decreases the probability a student prefers an income-driven repayment plan. The more tailored income information significantly increases students’ low-income expectations but causes insignificant declines in choosing the income-driven repayment plan. I conclude that increasing students’ low-income expectations is unlikely to increase take up of income-driven repayment plans.

Project investigates campus civic engagement and education efforts and association with student registration and voting on a small, comprehensive liberal arts based university in the Midwest. Quantitative data includes undergraduate surveys disseminated in 2016 and 2020 in the context of presidential elections. Participants in 2016 only included members of student sororities and fraternities, while 2020 surveys were sent to all undergraduates. Qualitative data included follow up, semi-structured interviews with a randomly chosen subsample of survey participants.

Exploring Gender Differences in Leadership Aspirations: A Four-Year Longitudinal Study of College Students from Adverse Backgrounds (ICPSR 192043)

The gender disparity in leadership positions is substantial and critical, yet persists despite decades of focused study. Critical developmental periods, such as emerging adulthood, may be particularly relevant to attend to if we hope to find effective interventions to tackle this problem. The present study draws on longitudinal data covering four years of college among a socio-demographically and nationally diverse sample of college students with adverse backgrounds (N=404) who enrolled at one of 182 four-year colleges or universities across the US. Results indicate that female students enter college with significantly lower levels of leadership aspirations than their male counterparts. Once in college, despite greater likelihoods of participating in activities conceptualized as “leadership learning experiences,” female disadvantages persist. Overall, development experiences over four years of college had no discernable effect on gender disparities in leadership aspirations. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Broadening Participation in STEM College Majors (ICPSR 185641)

The data and analyses described in this paper are part of a larger controlled longitudinal study of the impacts of attending an inclusive STEM high school (ISHS). We define an ISHS as a school or school within a school accepting students primarily on the basis of interest rather than aptitude or prior achievement and giving them more intensive mathematics and science preparation than their state requires for graduation in order to prepare them for STEM college majors and careers. The project is testing the effects of attending an ISHS using student surveys, academic records, and interviews in Texas, North Carolina, and Ohio—three states with significant numbers of ISHSs and strong administrative data systems. Across the three states, the study has examined high school experiences and outcomes for students first surveyed in the 9th or 12th grade in 50 ISHSs plus students in the same grades in same-state comparison schools identified through propensity score matching. Matched students in ISHSs and comparison schools were surveyed a second time after 3 years (for those originally surveyed as 9th-graders) or were followed up in state higher education records two years after high school graduation (for those surveyed originally as 12th graders). After controlling for differences in the characteristics of students entering STEM and non-STEM high schools, the team has compared students on high school outcomes related to college readiness and the pursuit of postsecondary work in STEM. These include STEM interest and expectations as well as course-taking, graduation, and achievement. This project also has examined alternative types of ISHSs and explored relationships between STEM school design and implementation features and student outcomes. Policymaker interviews and survey data from school leaders provided  information on school context, design, and implementation features and as well as state policy influences. Subgroup analyses have investigated whether different kinds of students benefit differently from the ISHS experience.

Examining an Integrated Bystander and Alcohol Program for Sexual Assault Perpetration: A Preliminary Randomized Controlled Trial, Midwestern U.S., 2017-2019 (ICPSR 37490)

In this study, the research team conducted a randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing sexual assault perpetration and related outcomes (i.e., bystander behavior, rape myth acceptance) for men who received a alcohol-only group intervention to men who received an integrated alcohol and sexual assault group intervention. Specifically, the alcohol-only intervention consisted of the Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS), an empirically-supported intervention for college student drinking. The integrated alcohol and sexual assault intervention, termed the Alcohol and Relationships Group, was modeled after BASICS and empirically-supported Bystander and Social Norms interventions for sexual assault. The research aims for this study were:

  1. To examine whether reductions in alcohol use predict reductions in sexual assault perpetration over the course of a 6-month follow-up period
  2. To examine whether men randomized to the integrated intervention have superior sexual assault outcomes (reduced sexual assault perpetration, increased active bystander behaviors, reduced endorsement of unhealthy sexual social norms, and reduced rape myth acceptance) relative to men randomized to BASICS only

The current study recruited 93 college men who were sanctioned by their university to receive an alcohol intervention for violating a campus alcohol policy: by definition, an indicated and at-risk population for sexual assault perpetration. Men were followed for 6 months to determine the effects of the intervention on sexual assault perpetration and other primary outcomes (e.g., bystander behavior). Measures were taken at baseline, at 3 months, and at 6 months.

The purpose of College and Beyond II (CBII) is to better understand how students' undergraduate experiences in and out of the classroom relate to their long-run development. The CBII Alumni Survey provides data collected from graduates ten years after earning their bachelor's degrees. It serves as the main source of information on students' long-run development for the study series. Domains covered by the CBII Alumni Survey include arts appreciation and engagement; health and well-being; labor market participation and wealth; civic engagement; beliefs about diversity and pluralism; and democratic participation. The survey also asks about respondents' recollections of their college experiences, as well as their current family structure, social identities, educational attainment, experiences with discrimination, and political and religious identification. The survey contains scales that are widely used in various disciplines such as education, economics, political science, and psychology.

The CBII Alumni Survey data can be linked to other studies in the CBII series using the ID_PERSON anonymized student identifier. These CBII studies provide information about respondents' academic backgrounds, undergraduate course transcripts, descriptions of courses taken, and postsecondary enrollment and degree attainment. Contextual data about respondents' neighborhoods can be linked to the National Neighborhood Data Archive using current zip codes, and contextual data about the colleges respondents applied to can be linked to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System using U.S. Department of Education UNITID identifiers.

The College and Beyond II Administrative Data contains administrative student records obtained for nearly all bachelors-seeking undergraduate students at 19 postsecondary institutions representing 7 postsecondary system in the United States from approximately 2000 to 2021. Partner colleges provided information on demographics (race, gender), family background, entry term, degree term, college major, admissions test scores, term-by-term information on majors, credits, and grades, and information on all courses taken.

Students' administrative data can be linked to other data in the CBII series. Students are linked across studies in the series by a unique anonymized person identifier. Colleges are linked across studies in the series by a unique anonymized college identifier. Files are organized by the postsecondary system they are a part of and can be linked by a unique anonymized system identifier.

Content warning: Users should be aware that some responses cover sensitive topics such as experiences of discrimination, sexual assault, suicidal ideation, and substance misuse. Respondents' experiences of discrimination include incidents of hate speech and the use of racial slurs. The College and Beyond II (CBII) Student Experience Analytics Study contains contextual analytics of students' undergraduate experience based solely on information extracted from the Administrative Data. The study consists of two sets of derived measures, the Transcript of the Future measures and the Course Diversity measures. They are provided as examples of the types of aggregate measures that can be distilled from transcript data. Users are encouraged to explore their potential for measuring the student experience. Researchers who use undergraduate participants may be concerned about variation in data quality at different times of the semester. For instance, students who are more self-controlled may get their course credit earlier in the semester while those who procrastinate may wait until the end. Therefore, a potential time-of-semester effect may influence research data. This study sought to examine the relation between time of semester and delay discounting (DD) -- a process that refers to an individual’s sensitivity to delayed rewards. Undergraduate participants completed money (n = 149) and food (n = 150) DD measures. DD was compared across the semester. The number of systematic responders (i.e., those that follow a hyperbolic discounting curve) was also examined to determine the extent to which inattentive or random responding was evident. Regression analyses showed money and food DD was consistent and stable across the semester for all participants. Results for both money and food discounting remained insignificant when only systematic responders were used. Therefore, for college students, monetary and food DD is unrelated to time of semester.

Perceived stress among university students is a prevalent health issue directly correlated with poor academic performance, compromised physical and mental health, high risk of substance abuse, and suicidal ideation. The rate of college students diagnosed with depression has increased, and there is high prevalence of anxiety among them. College and university students' stress, depression and anxiety are a neglected global public health issue which has significantly negative impact on students’ quality of life. High tension and stress make university students at risk for feelings of hopelessness and poor sleep quality, which can lead to illicit drug use. Non-medical use of prescription stimulants such as Adderall, Ritalin and Vyvanse are widespread and common in university students to enhance their academic performance. With the rise in mental health concerns associated with distress among college and university students, and the increase in demand for counseling services, it is necessary to implement stress reduction programs on campuses. Spirituality and positive emotions have profound, positive impacts on health and reduce perceived stress. A national survey of college students indicated that over 80% have interest in spiritual development. Tamarkoz® is the art of self-knowledge through concentration and meditation that is unique to M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi®, School of Islamic Sufism®. It is required to be approved by the Sufi Master of M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi® to teach the Tamarkoz® method of meditation. It is a method of concentration that can be applied to any task. Tamarkoz incorporates physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of an individual. The method is said to discipline the mind, body, and emotions to avoid unintended distractions. Therefore, it can be used in daily life activities, such as studying, eating, driving, de-stressing or in Sufism, seeking self-knowledge. This study was an 18-week quasi-experimental design with pre-intervention, post-intervention and follow-up assessments in the experimental group, a wait-list control, and a third group that utilized the campus health center’s stress management resources. Participants, university students, had no prior exposure to Tamarkoz, and there were no statistically significant differences among groups on baseline measurements. Using a generalized linear mixed model, significant increases in positive emotion and daily spiritual experiences, and significant reductions in perceived stress and heart rate were found in the experimental group compared to the other two groups. Tamarkoz seems to show some advantages over the usual stress management resources offered by a student health center.

Second language (L2) teachers may shy away from self-assessments because of warnings that students are not accurate self-assessors. This information stems from meta-analyses (Ross, 1998, Li & Zhang, 2021) in which self-assessment scores on average did not correlate highly with proficiency test results. However, researchers mostly used Pearson correlations, when polyserial could be used. Furthermore, self-assessments today can be computer-adaptive. With them, nonlinear statistics are needed to investigate their relationship with other measurements. We wondered, if we explored the relationship between self-assessment and proficiency test scores using more robust measurements (polyserial correlation, continuation ration modeling), would we find different results? We had 807 L2-Spanish learners take a computer-adaptive, L2-speaking self-assessment and the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview – computer (OPIc). The scores correlated at .61 (polyserial). Using continuation ratio modeling, we found each unit of increase on the OPIc scale was associated with a 130% increase in the odds of passing the self-assessment thresholds. In other words, a student was more likely to move on to higher self-assessment subsections if they had a higher OPIc rating. We found computer-adaptive self-assessments appropriate for low-stakes L2-proficiency measurements, especially because they are cost effective, make intuitive sense to learners, and promote learner agency.

Gamification refers to the use of game mechanics in non-recreational environments, such as the school environment, in order to enhance motivation, concentration, effort, commitment and other positive values ​​common to all games. Gamification allows us to establish clear objectives that are presented to be overcome. It also offers constant feedback, shows the progression of students, recognizes their effort and it guides them over the course of the teaching and learning process. The aim is to measure the knowledge of future teachers about gamification as a didactic resource. The sample is composed of 164 students of the Degree in Primary Education in Galicia (Spain). The scale obtains a reliability of 0.94 α. The index of Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) provides a value of 0.932 and Bartlett's test of sphericity (c2 = 2739,793; gl = 351, p<.000), ensuring that the factor analysis is right, and the model achieves a good fit. The students of the Degree in Primary Education have not heard of the term gamification, but still consider feasible its implementation in the school environment. The students feel that they don’t know enough about this teaching resource, and they are afraid of not achieving the curricular objectives using it as they have no control over the content to be taught.

The extent and consequences of various forms of interpersonal violence (IV) among college-aged persons has been well-documented. This study sought to examine how IV might differ between young adults who go to college compared to those that do not go to college.

To better understand the risks for, experiences with, and consequences of IV among young adults, in fiscal year 2016, the National Institute for Justice (NIJ) made an award to Westat to fund the planning phase of a longitudinal study to research the victimization and violence experienced by college-aged individuals. The planning phase was designed to produce a comprehensive plan to conduct a generalizable, longitudinal study examining long-term trajectories of risk for, experiences with, and recovery after experiencing violence and victimization among college-aged individuals. This pilot study was the result of this planning phase.

The major variables in this study contained information regarding sexual assault and rape, dating violence, stalking, violence committed by peers, and violence committed by strangers, as well as demographic variables such as participant age, gender, and race.

The Prostate Cancer Risk in Young Black Men Study (PCRBM) is a qualitative study using interviews and focus groups with Black males at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to understand prostate cancer risk and knowledge among this group. Inclusion criteria for participants in the study were: (a) currently enrolled in the university being studied, (b) self-identify as African American or Black, and (c) male. Because the male population at this HBCU was a smaller group, they were recruited using their campus email. The study was conducted from October 2015 through February 2016. Focus group and interview questions were developed based on the Health Belief Model. Questions covered masculinity, healthy and unhealthy behaviors, barriers to health, and prostate cancer.

Campus Climate Survey on Sexual Assault and Sexual Misconduct, 2014-2019 (ICPSR 37662)

In 2018, the Association of American Universities (AAU) assembled 33 schools to participate in the spring of 2019 as a follow-up to the 2015 survey. For those who participated in the 2015 AAU survey and others who had implemented the AAU survey on their own, the 2019 survey provided a means to track trends for key types of victimization and climate outcomes.

The AAU sought to examine the prevalence of and assess the campus climate regarding sexual assault and misconduct at colleges and universities. The goal of these surveys was to gather as much information about the issue as possible to help inform member schools as they create policies and strategies to combat sexual assault and misconduct on their campuses.

The study reported on the following research questions:

  • How extensive is nonconsensual sexual contact?
  • How extensive are sexual harassment, stalking, and intimate partner violence (IPV)?
  • What are students' experiences with campus programs and resources?
  • What are students' perceptions and experiences related to sexual assault and other sexual misconduct?
  • Have the prevalence, knowledge, and perceptions of risk for sexual assault or misconduct changed since 2015?

A total of 181,752 students out of a total student sample size of 830,936 completed the survey. Within this sample, there were 108,221 undergraduate respondents and 73,531 graduate and professional respondents; 95,975 respondents from private institutions and 85,777 respondents from public institutions. Demographic variables include age, year in school/program, year enrolled, race, citizenship, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, and disability status.

This study includes 3 data files. The first two files are respondent-level and incident-level data, respectively. The respondent-level file (DS1) contains all the survey data; this includes the survey items, derived variables, weight variables, and ID variables. The incident-level file (DS2) contains only a subset of the survey items; these include the Detail Incident Form (DIF) items (variables that start with 'GA'), the COMPLETE indicator, derived variables related to the DIF, ID, and weight variables. A third SAS data file (DS3) is provided that has the replicate weight factors for use with survey procedures that utilize replicate weights for variance estimation.

Awardees can receive the scholarship for up to 5 years as an undergraduate and 4 years as a graduate student. The scholarship is renewable through graduate school in math, science, engineering, library science, and education.

In order to see how GMS has impacted students and to know how to better prepare minority students for college, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has commissioned a survey of recipients. Cohorts were composed of both recipients and non-recipients. Non-recipients were defined as individuals who were asked to go on to the scholar confirmation/verification phase, but did not become a scholar for one or more reasons.

Baseline survey data has been collected from both recipients and non-recipients of Cohort 9.

The Community College Civic Outcomes Survey, Spring 2016 study examines the individual and institutional factors associated with greater civic agency, capacity, behavior, and knowledge among college students. In Spring 2016, two surveys were digitally administered at 13 community colleges, or community college systems. These colleges were purposively selected for diversity in terms of geography, campus setting, size, and the racial and ethnic composition of their student bodies. This data includes a sample of 1,693 surveys from those collected.

The Civic Outcomes Survey (COS) was administered to students, and included questions related to voting, political and community engagement, civic knowledge, and leadership development. The Institutional Questionnaire (IQ), was admitted to each college's liaisons to The Democracy Commitment (TDC), and included questions related to college-level factors known to influence student engagement. These questions assessed for institutional intentionality towards civic engagement through college missions and strategic planning, as well as academic and faculty focus on civic involvement. Both instruments were previously tested in a small regional pilot and were subsequently refined to allow for greater response variability. Demographic variables include race, income, gender, and enrollment status.

The Community College Civic Outcomes Survey, Spring 2015 study examines the individual and institutional factors associated with greater civic agency, capacity, behavior, and knowledge among college students. In Spring 2015, two surveys were digitally administered at nine community colleges. These nine colleges were purposively selected for diversity in terms of geography, campus setting, size, and the racial and ethnic composition of their student bodies. From a total of 98,838 recipients, 4,788 usable surveys were returned, for an aggregate five percent response rate (response rates varied from two to 13% among the nine colleges). This data includes a sample of 3,897 from those surveys collected.

The Association of American Universities (AAU) Campus Climate Survey on Sexual Assault and Sexual Misconduct developed and implemented a scientific survey to better understand the attitudes and experiences of students with respect to sexual assault and sexual misconduct. The survey's primary goal was to provide participating institutions of higher education (IHEs) with information to inform their policies to prevent and respond to sexual assault and misconduct. Specifically, the survey assessed the incidence, prevalence, and characteristics of incidents of sexual assault and misconduct. It also assessed the overall campus climate with respect to perceptions of risk, knowledge of resources available to victims, and perceived reactions to an incident of sexual assault or misconduct. The goal of the study was to provide policymakers with information that could be used to develop programs to prevent sexual violence in the future.

Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (ICPSR 36540)

For over a decade, the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP) has gathered, analyzed, and reported on survey data from arts and design graduates of degree-granting, postsecondary institutions to understand the professional experiences, educational satisfaction, and personal fulfillment of these alumni.

These data have informed scholarly insights about many topics including needs for expanded curricula; the value of paid internships and other co-curricular pursuits; inequalities in arts training and careers; and entrepreneurial traits of artists. In addition, data gathered through SNAAP assists government entities, funding organizations, and arts leaders in making investment decisions in education, training, and resource allocation.

The SNAAP website offers publicly available reports and presentations on the SNAAP survey and insights its data offer. The first national SNAAP survey administration occurred in fall 2011 and was repeated in 2012 and 2013, creating a database of nearly 100,000 respondents. SNAAP's second three-year cycle took place in 2015, 2016, and 2017. The latest SNAAP survey was administered in 2022 and incorporated notable updates to its sampling and questionnaire. Over 61,000 alumni responded to SNAAP's 2022 survey administration, resulting in nearly 300,000 alumni responding since SNAAP's inception. Technical documentation for the 2022 survey administration is slated for public release in late 2023.

The Project Information Literacy (PIL) lifelong learning survey dataset was produced as part of a two-year federally funded study on relatively recent US college graduates and their information-seeking behavior for continued learning. The goal of the survey was to collect quantitative data about the information-seeking behavior of a sample of recent graduates—the strategies, techniques, information support systems, and best practices—used to support lifelong learning in post-college life. The dataset contains responses from 1,651 respondents to a 21-item questionnaire administered between October 9, 2014 and December 15, 2014. The voluntary sample of respondents consisted of relatively recent graduates, who had completed their degrees between 2007 and 2012, from one of 10 US colleges and universities in the institutional sample. Quantitative data are included in the dataset about the learning needs of relatively recent graduates as well as the information sources they used in three arenas of their post-college lives (i.e., personal life, workplace, and the communities in which they resided). Demographic information—including age, gender, major, GPA, employment status, graduate school attendance, and geographic proximity of current residence to their alma mater—is also included in the dataset for the respondents. Longitudinal Study of Violence Against Women: Victimization and Perpetration Among College Students in a State-Supported University in the United States, 1990-1995 (ICPSR 3212)

The purpose of this study was to investigate longitudinally the developmental antecedents of physical and sexual violence against young women, using a theoretically based multicausal model that included characteristics related to the victim, the perpetrator, and the environment. The researchers used a classic longitudinal design, replicated over two cohorts (those born in 1972 and 1973), each assessed first when 18 years old, and again when 19, 20, 21, and 22 years old. The first survey (Part 1, Female Data) collected information on the respondent's experiences of sexual assault from age 14 to the present (age 18). Other questions focused on the kind of person the respondent thought she was, how much of an influence religion had on the way she chose to spend each day, her dating behavior during high school, the number of times the respondent had used behavior such as discussing issues relatively calmly, arguing, sulking, stomping out of the room, or threatening to hit, with a romantic partner during high school, and how frequently romantic partners used these types of behavior with the respondent. Other items elicited information on the number of women the respondent knew who had been sexually victimized, whether men forced them to engage in sexual activities, the nature of the respondent's sexual experience from the time she was 14 to the present, the respondent's age when each experience occurred, if the respondent or the other person was using drugs or alcohol when it happened, if the respondent was injured, and whom the respondent told about the experience. Information was collected on sexual abuse prior to the age of 14 as well. The respondent was also asked to describe how often her parents or stepparents had administered physical blows (i.e., hitting, kicking, throwing someone down), whether someone had fondled her in a sexual way, whether a male had attempted intercourse with the respondent, the relationship between the respondent and the perpetrator, the respondent's age when the experience occurred, who the other person was, who initiated the date or paid for the food, drinks, or tickets, whether the respondent or the other person was using drugs or alcohol, the respondent's opinions about men and women in America (i.e., if the respondent agreed or disagreed that chivalrous gestures toward women on the part of men should be encouraged), whether the respondent had engaged in sexual intercourse when she did not want to because a male threatened or used some degree of physical force (twisting her arm, holding her down, etc.), and the respondent's drug and alcohol use. The subsequent surveys contained measures of sexual assault during each year of college (i.e., since the previous survey). Questions asked in subsequent surveys were similar to those in the first survey, and the responses are all included in Part 1. Questions posed to males (Part 2, Male Data) included the number of women the respondent had sexual intercourse with, how often the respondent heard talk that speculated how a particular woman would be in bed, reasons the respondent engaged in sexual activity, number of times the respondent engaged in sexual intercourse when a woman didn't want to, and questions similar to those in Part 1 with the respondent as the perpetrator. Demographic information in Part 1 and Part 2 describes the female or the male respondent's education, race, religious preference, sexual orientation, and marital or relationship status.

Smarr student sleep timing logs (ICPSR 100068)

Stability of sleep and circadian rhythms are important for healthy learning and memory. While experimental manipulation of lifestyle and learning outcomes present major obstacles, the ongoing increase in data sources allows retrospective data mining of people’s sleep timing variation. Here I use digital sleep-log data generated by 1109 students in a biology lab course at the University of Washington to test the hypothesis that higher variance in time asleep and later sleep onset times negatively correlate with class performance, used here as a real-world proxy for learning and memory. I find that sleep duration variance and mean sleep onset times both significantly correlate with class performance. These correlations are strong on weeknights, but disappear on Friday and Saturday nights (“free nights”). These correlations also show large sex differences, with women showing substantially stronger (both larger and more powerful) negative correlations than men. Finally, though these data come with no demographic information beyond sex, the constructed demographic groups of “larks” and “owls” within the sexes reveal a significant decrease in performance of owls relative to larks in male students, whereas for the correlation of performance with sleep-onset time for all male students was only a near-significant trend. This provides a proof of concept that deeper demographic mining of digital logs in the future may identify subgroups for which certain sleep phenotypes have greater predictive value for performance outcomes. The data analyzed are validated by showing known patterns, including sleep-timing delays from weeknights to free-nights, and sleep-timing delays in men relative to women. These findings support the hypothesis that modern schedule impositions on sleep and circadian timing have consequences for real-world learning and memory. This study also highlights the low-cost, large-scale benefits of personal, daily, digital records as an augmentation of sleep and circadian studies.This work was unfunded.
